  • 00:00:10.100 --> 00:00:20.100
  • Allen Jackson: Now, this weekend, I want to focus on one
  • 00:00:24.100 --> 00:00:26.070
  • particular idea that the Scripture unveils to us
  • 00:00:26.080 --> 00:00:30.000
  • because it is essential to this notion.
  • 00:00:30.010 --> 00:00:33.060
  • It's very simple.
  • 00:00:33.070 --> 00:00:34.290
  • It's this, that God is the creator and the designer
  • 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:38.110
  • of all things.
  • 00:00:38.120 --> 00:00:40.060
  • In Genesis chapter 1 and verse 1, that's very
  • 00:00:40.070 --> 00:00:42.230
  • near the beginning of the Bible, all right?
  • 00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:46.200
  • If you're not a biblical scholar, and you don't know
  • 00:00:46.210 --> 00:00:48.170
  • where to find that, go to the table of contents,
  • 00:00:48.180 --> 00:00:51.050
  • and it's the next page, okay?
  • 00:00:51.060 --> 00:00:54.140
  • In fact, it's probably the most well-known verse in all
  • 00:00:54.150 --> 00:00:56.170
  • of the Bible.
  • 00:00:56.180 --> 00:00:57.280
  • I suspect you know it.
  • 00:00:57.290 --> 00:00:59.080
  • It says in the beginning...
  • 00:00:59.090 --> 00:01:02.140
  • See, you're so smart.
  • 00:01:02.150 --> 00:01:03.250
  • God created the heavens and the earth, and there's
  • 00:01:03.260 --> 00:01:06.010
  • a couple of ways to look at that, and you can think,
  • 00:01:06.020 --> 00:01:07.200
  • "Boy, that was a big bucket."
  • 00:01:07.210 --> 00:01:09.030
  • It was gonna be a bestseller and we needed a really punchy
  • 00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:11.140
  • first line and that seemed to have a scope and breadth
  • 00:01:11.150 --> 00:01:16.020
  • and enough influence that we could start with this.
  • 00:01:16.030 --> 00:01:20.030
  • Or you could imagine that it's an essential idea for the rest
  • 00:01:20.040 --> 00:01:23.090
  • of the entire story that in the beginning God created
  • 00:01:23.100 --> 00:01:26.290
  • the heavens and the Earth.
  • 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:28.100
  • I would vote for the latter of those two options.
  • 00:01:28.110 --> 00:01:31.110
  • That it changes everything now if that was the only place it
  • 00:01:31.120 --> 00:01:34.010
  • was stated in the Bible you can dismiss it.
  • 00:01:34.020 --> 00:01:35.240
  • You can shrug your shoulders and say hey, it's a good
  • 00:01:35.250 --> 00:01:37.130
  • intro line.
  • 00:01:37.140 --> 00:01:38.230
  • We've all searched for an intro line for something we were
  • 00:01:38.240 --> 00:01:40.140
  • putting together.
  • 00:01:40.150 --> 00:01:42.020
  • But it's far more than that.
  • 00:01:42.030 --> 00:01:43.130
  • The notion of God as creator is a part of the fabric
  • 00:01:43.140 --> 00:01:45.270
  • of Scripture.
  • 00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:47.110
  • It's asserted in all the books.
  • 00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:48.260
  • It's asserted in all the historical time periods.
  • 00:01:48.270 --> 00:01:51.210
  • All the characters you know so well from reading the Bible
  • 00:01:51.220 --> 00:01:55.120
  • affirm it throughout the pages of Scripture.
  • 00:01:55.130 --> 00:01:57.030
  • I brought you just a set of representative samples.
  • 00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:59.110
  • It's by no means an inclusive list, but I wanted you to see
  • 00:01:59.120 --> 00:02:03.000
  • the breadth of this idea in Scripture, because I'm going
  • 00:02:03.010 --> 00:02:06.180
  • to ask you to make a choice today before you leave this
  • 00:02:06.190 --> 00:02:08.230
  • place with regard to this idea and this principle.
  • 00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:11.230
  • Look at Exodus 31 that would be the second book of the Bible
  • 00:02:11.240 --> 00:02:14.170
  • in case you don't know.
  • 00:02:14.180 --> 00:02:16.110
  • It says, "It's a sign between me and the sons of Israel forever.
  • 00:02:16.120 --> 00:02:19.090
  • For in six days, the Lord made heaven and earth,
  • 00:02:19.100 --> 00:02:22.040
  • but on the seventh day he ceased from labor and was refreshed."
  • 00:02:22.050 --> 00:02:26.020
  • Every Sabbath is a reminder that on the previous six days God is
  • 00:02:26.030 --> 00:02:29.260
  • the creator.
  • 00:02:29.270 --> 00:02:31.190
  • When we have a day of rest, when we have a weekend, when we take
  • 00:02:31.200 --> 00:02:34.190
  • a break from our labor a part of that is to reflect
  • 00:02:34.200 --> 00:02:38.100
  • upon Almighty God, the creator of heaven and Earth
  • 00:02:38.110 --> 00:02:41.160
  • and everything that is in it.
  • 00:02:41.170 --> 00:02:44.090
  • In the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 4 it says: "Indeed ask
  • 00:02:44.100 --> 00:02:48.010
  • now concerning the former days, which were before you
  • 00:02:48.020 --> 00:02:50.150
  • since the day that God created man on the Earth and enquire
  • 00:02:50.160 --> 00:02:54.210
  • from one end of the heavens to the other, has anything been
  • 00:02:54.220 --> 00:02:57.050
  • done like this great thing or has anything been heard
  • 00:02:57.060 --> 00:02:59.190
  • like it?"
  • 00:02:59.200 --> 00:03:01.010
  • Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy; the books
  • 00:03:01.020 --> 00:03:03.270
  • of Moses, the heart of the Hebrew Bible,
  • 00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:06.210
  • the beginning books of the Bible affirm God as creator.
  • 00:03:06.220 --> 00:03:11.120
  • We move into the historical narrative the books
  • 00:03:11.130 --> 00:03:13.110
  • about the judges and the monarchies and the kings
  • 00:03:13.120 --> 00:03:15.170
  • of Israel and the prophets.
  • 00:03:15.180 --> 00:03:17.020
  • The theme is carried forward there.
  • 00:03:17.030 --> 00:03:19.210
  • In 1 Chronicles 16: "All the gods of the peoples are
  • 00:03:19.220 --> 00:03:22.110
  • idols, but the Lord made the heavens."
  • 00:03:22.120 --> 00:03:25.210
  • We've been learning principles of interpreting our Bible
  • 00:03:25.220 --> 00:03:27.290
  • reading, our Bible and and here's one idea that is
  • 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:31.180
  • helpful: if you find an idea that is asserted, repeated
  • 00:03:31.190 --> 00:03:34.250
  • throughout the course of Scripture in all sorts
  • 00:03:34.260 --> 00:03:37.020
  • of historical context and social context.
  • 00:03:37.030 --> 00:03:40.140
  • It isn't just because it's a good idea, it's because it's
  • 00:03:40.150 --> 00:03:43.110
  • an idea that's difficult to hold or an idea that is consistently
  • 00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:47.240
  • challenged.
  • 00:03:47.250 --> 00:03:50.040
  • See, I think we could imagine that the 21st century is
  • 00:03:50.050 --> 00:03:52.200
  • the first group of people to ever have the idea that we
  • 00:03:52.210 --> 00:03:55.190
  • were too smart to believe that God created the heavens
  • 00:03:55.200 --> 00:03:57.250
  • and the Earth.
  • 00:03:57.260 --> 00:04:00.050
  • It's easy to believe kinda have that historical arrogance
  • 00:04:00.060 --> 00:04:03.210
  • and think, "Well, our generation is so enlightened that we face
  • 00:04:03.220 --> 00:04:06.060
  • a unique challenge.
  • 00:04:06.070 --> 00:04:07.170
  • You know, back in the day it was easy to believe that."
  • 00:04:07.180 --> 00:04:10.170
  • But that's not what the Scripture suggests.
  • 00:04:10.180 --> 00:04:13.090
  • If we go all the way back to ancient Israel
  • 00:04:13.100 --> 00:04:16.020
  • and the monarchies and the prophets are necessary
  • 00:04:16.030 --> 00:04:18.040
  • to remind the people that there's all sorts of gods
  • 00:04:18.050 --> 00:04:20.230
  • to choose from, all kinds of idols, and all those idols
  • 00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:23.160
  • had economic benefits that were promised and social status that
  • 00:04:23.170 --> 00:04:26.160
  • was promised.
  • 00:04:26.170 --> 00:04:27.270
  • The Canaanite fertility god, you'd get better crops
  • 00:04:27.280 --> 00:04:30.000
  • and better income and more security if you'd worshiped
  • 00:04:30.010 --> 00:04:32.270
  • the Baals or the Asherah, or the Egyptian gods that you've
  • 00:04:32.280 --> 00:04:35.250
  • seen from-- with Hollywood's help with the heads of animals
  • 00:04:35.260 --> 00:04:38.210
  • and the bodies of human beings.
  • 00:04:38.220 --> 00:04:41.140
  • And the prophets remind us that they're all idols, they're all
  • 00:04:41.150 --> 00:04:44.000
  • pretenders, they have no innate power, but there is one true
  • 00:04:44.010 --> 00:04:47.140
  • God, the Almighty God that is the creator of heaven and Earth.
  • 00:04:47.150 --> 00:04:52.150
  • It's an idea you gotta sort out, you gotta wrestle with it
  • 00:04:52.160 --> 00:04:55.150
  • and the fact that you wrestle with it does not make you
  • 00:04:55.160 --> 00:04:57.210
  • a faithless person or a person with a hard heart, it makes
  • 00:04:57.220 --> 00:05:01.250
  • you human.
  • 00:05:01.260 --> 00:05:03.170
  • And the fact that it is challenged in our generation
  • 00:05:03.180 --> 00:05:06.050
  • doesn't mean we are smarter than the previous generation, it
  • 00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:09.150
  • means in every generation, there's a spirit that challenges
  • 00:05:09.160 --> 00:05:13.060
  • God and that hasn't diminished in the 21st century in case you
  • 00:05:13.070 --> 00:05:17.270
  • haven't noticed.
  • 00:05:17.280 --> 00:05:20.040
  • 2 Kings 19: "Hezekiah prayed to the Lord and said, 'Lord
  • 00:05:20.050 --> 00:05:23.040
  • the God of Israel, you are enthroned above the cherubim.
  • 00:05:23.050 --> 00:05:26.170
  • You are the God, you alone are all the kingdoms of the Earth,
  • 00:05:26.180 --> 00:05:29.160
  • you who have made heaven and Earth.'" In Nehemiah chapter
  • 00:05:29.170 --> 00:05:34.000
  • 9 it says, "You alone are the Lord, you made the heavens,
  • 00:05:34.010 --> 00:05:37.120
  • the heaven of heavens with all their host."
  • 00:05:37.130 --> 00:05:43.130
  • First we'll turn the page.
  • 00:05:45.020 --> 00:05:48.070
  • I know I skipped a verse, it's okay.
  • 00:05:48.080 --> 00:05:53.000
  • "You made the heavens, the heaven of heavens with all
  • 00:05:53.010 --> 00:05:55.190
  • their hosts, the Earth and all that's on it the seas and all
  • 00:05:55.200 --> 00:05:59.010
  • that's in them.
  • 00:05:59.020 --> 00:06:00.130
  • You give life to all of them in the heavenly host bows
  • 00:06:00.140 --> 00:06:02.160
  • down before you."
  • 00:06:02.170 --> 00:06:04.090
  • Some of you will remember Nehemiah is the cup bearer
  • 00:06:04.100 --> 00:06:06.170
  • to the Persian king.
  • 00:06:06.180 --> 00:06:08.090
  • He's a foreigner living in a foreign land.
  • 00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:10.180
  • In this period of Israelite history, we call it The Exile:
  • 00:06:10.190 --> 00:06:13.180
  • Jerusalem has been destroyed, the temple has been destroyed.
  • 00:06:13.190 --> 00:06:18.170
  • A proportion of the population had been deported.
  • 00:06:18.180 --> 00:06:20.280
  • They've lived in Babylon and now Persia.
  • 00:06:20.290 --> 00:06:22.160
  • There's an empire change.
  • 00:06:22.170 --> 00:06:23.270
  • Nehemiah is this place of prominence and he is
  • 00:06:23.280 --> 00:06:26.100
  • asserting again the notion that God is the creator
  • 00:06:26.110 --> 00:06:29.090
  • of the heavens and the Earth and everything that is in them.
  • 00:06:29.100 --> 00:06:32.110
  • It's a season when it would be very important to be reminded
  • 00:06:32.120 --> 00:06:35.060
  • of that not only are the Israelites living
  • 00:06:35.070 --> 00:06:37.240
  • in a foreign land in the midst of a group of people who don't
  • 00:06:37.250 --> 00:06:40.110
  • worship the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the midst
  • 00:06:40.120 --> 00:06:42.240
  • of a pagan culture with pagan temples and pagan rituals
  • 00:06:42.250 --> 00:06:46.120
  • and they no longer have the privilege of offering daily
  • 00:06:46.130 --> 00:06:48.270
  • sacrifices and their holidays aren't celebrated as broadly as
  • 00:06:48.280 --> 00:06:52.210
  • they were when they were in their homeland.
  • 00:06:52.220 --> 00:06:54.170
  • They also have the historical remembrance and the personal
  • 00:06:54.180 --> 00:06:57.110
  • stories-- they've seen Jerusalem destroyed by a foreign army.
  • 00:06:57.120 --> 00:07:02.010
  • They saw the temple of Almighty God torn down.
  • 00:07:02.020 --> 00:07:05.280
  • They're no longer celebrating Passover in Jerusalem in the way
  • 00:07:05.290 --> 00:07:09.260
  • that they had for hundreds and hundreds of years.
  • 00:07:09.270 --> 00:07:13.290
  • I don't have the imagination nor the language to try
  • 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.150
  • to convey to you the emotional hit that would be.
  • 00:07:17.160 --> 00:07:25.160
  • I have to thinking it would be roughly analogous to to seeing
  • 00:07:25.170 --> 00:07:28.170
  • Washington D.C. leveled with all the buildings that you know so
  • 00:07:28.180 --> 00:07:31.260
  • well and the monuments that are a part of our history and you
  • 00:07:31.270 --> 00:07:34.200
  • see them obliterated by an adversary.
  • 00:07:34.210 --> 00:07:38.150
  • It would shake your confidence it would cause you to reevaluate
  • 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:43.040
  • your faith and what you trusted in and what your source was
  • 00:07:43.050 --> 00:07:46.150
  • a Nehemiah is saying to the people of God, you alone,
  • 00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:50.070
  • Lord, made the heavens.
  • 00:07:50.080 --> 00:07:51.280
  • The Earth and all that's on it, you made it; the seas and all
  • 00:07:51.290 --> 00:07:54.100
  • that's in them.
  • 00:07:54.110 --> 00:07:55.200
  • He's asserting the majesty and the power and the strength
  • 00:07:55.210 --> 00:07:58.290
  • of Almighty God.
  • 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:02.110
  • We can't afford to lose that thought.
  • 00:08:02.120 --> 00:08:05.180
  • In Job 38, you know the story of Job.
  • 00:08:05.190 --> 00:08:09.140
  • Some scholars think it's one of the oldest, if not
  • 00:08:09.150 --> 00:08:11.210
  • the oldest, book in the Bible.
  • 00:08:11.220 --> 00:08:13.180
  • Job was a man of great success, great affluence, a godly man.
  • 00:08:13.190 --> 00:08:16.220
  • In fact, God brags about Job when Satan presents himself.
  • 00:08:16.230 --> 00:08:20.100
  • He says there's nobody in all the Earth like Job.
  • 00:08:20.110 --> 00:08:23.240
  • And Satan says it's only because you blessed him so much.
  • 00:08:23.250 --> 00:08:26.060
  • Do you know that God wants to bless you?
  • 00:08:26.070 --> 00:08:29.100
  • I smile, sometimes as Christians, we get so--
  • 00:08:29.110 --> 00:08:32.000
  • we debate some odd things.
  • 00:08:32.010 --> 00:08:35.110
  • God wants good things for you.
  • 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:37.240
  • "Well, well, I don't serve God for good things."
  • 00:08:37.250 --> 00:08:41.260
  • Okay, but he still wants good things for you.
  • 00:08:41.270 --> 00:08:47.140
  • Well, I understand you can't evaluate your spiritual
  • 00:08:47.150 --> 00:08:51.290
  • wellbeing or your spiritual health by the label in your
  • 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:54.010
  • clothing or the balance in your accounts, that's nonsense.
  • 00:08:54.020 --> 00:08:59.210
  • But can we settle the idea that God wants good things for you?
  • 00:08:59.220 --> 00:09:04.290
  • The Bible says that abundance is a blessing and poverty
  • 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:08.030
  • is a curse.
  • 00:09:08.040 --> 00:09:10.100
  • Now I know godly people that struggle with a little, doesn't
  • 00:09:10.110 --> 00:09:13.120
  • mean that there's something-- that the fact that you're
  • 00:09:13.130 --> 00:09:15.250
  • in a difficult season doesn't mean, you're diminished.
  • 00:09:15.260 --> 00:09:18.000
  • In fact, Job goes through is one of those seasons.
  • 00:09:18.010 --> 00:09:20.070
  • He loses everything he has: he loses his wealth, he loses his
  • 00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:24.100
  • family, he loses almost all of his friends, he loses any
  • 00:09:24.110 --> 00:09:27.180
  • status, he has-- he eventually even loses his health.
  • 00:09:27.190 --> 00:09:31.060
  • It's an awkward book because God gives some sense of permission
  • 00:09:31.070 --> 00:09:35.060
  • for that to happen to Job.
  • 00:09:35.070 --> 00:09:37.260
  • Can you think of any place else in the Bible where God gives
  • 00:09:37.270 --> 00:09:39.270
  • permission for someone to be sifted?
  • 00:09:39.280 --> 00:09:44.170
  • Remember, what Jesus said to Peter?
  • 00:09:44.180 --> 00:09:45.280
  • "Peter, I've prayed for you.
  • 00:09:45.290 --> 00:09:47.250
  • The devil has asked permission to sift you."
  • 00:09:47.260 --> 00:09:52.210
  • And Jesus says, "But it's okay, I've prayed that your faith
  • 00:09:52.220 --> 00:09:55.020
  • won't fail."
  • 00:09:55.030 --> 00:09:57.050
  • I've always thought that was an odd prayer.
  • 00:09:57.060 --> 00:10:00.060
  • If I had been Peter I'd say, "No, Lord, pray it won't happen.
  • 00:10:00.070 --> 00:10:06.150
  • Tell the devil to leave me alone.
  • 00:10:06.160 --> 00:10:09.290
  • I mean, I know, you pray it."
  • 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:14.040
  • See, life is more challenging than we'd like.
  • 00:10:14.050 --> 00:10:16.050
  • It's why you can't let possessions be the barometer
  • 00:10:16.060 --> 00:10:19.120
  • of where you are with the Lord but don't let it get in your
  • 00:10:19.130 --> 00:10:22.120
  • heart that God doesn't want good things for you.
  • 00:10:22.130 --> 00:10:27.160
  • But finally after Job's lost everything and
  • 00:10:27.170 --> 00:10:29.060
  • his friends role in.
  • 00:10:29.070 --> 00:10:30.160
  • What friends Job had.
  • 00:10:30.170 --> 00:10:32.260
  • They start pointing out all the reasons why they think Job
  • 00:10:32.270 --> 00:10:35.060
  • has been beset with these calamities and none of them is
  • 00:10:35.070 --> 00:10:37.210
  • giving a true God perspective, and when God's had enough he
  • 00:10:37.220 --> 00:10:41.050
  • steps into the conversation.
  • 00:10:41.060 --> 00:10:42.150
  • That's what you have, it's Job 38 and 2.
  • 00:10:42.160 --> 00:10:44.210
  • It says, "Who is this that darkens counsel by words
  • 00:10:44.220 --> 00:10:47.010
  • without knowledge?"
  • 00:10:47.020 --> 00:10:49.200
  • In The Living Bible God said if you're so smart, who is it
  • 00:10:49.210 --> 00:10:52.060
  • that's chattering in this room?
  • 00:10:52.070 --> 00:10:55.240
  • I love this passage: "Now gird up your loins like a man, and
  • 00:10:55.250 --> 00:10:59.090
  • I will ask you, and you instruct me."
  • 00:10:59.100 --> 00:11:03.160
  • But a hitch up your britches, I'm about to ask you
  • 00:11:03.170 --> 00:11:05.260
  • some questions.
  • 00:11:05.270 --> 00:11:08.150
  • "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the Earth?
  • 00:11:08.160 --> 00:11:11.020
  • Tell me if you have understanding."
  • 00:11:11.030 --> 00:11:12.260
  • If you're so smart, tell me how I made this place?
  • 00:11:12.270 --> 00:11:17.030
  • God never steps away from that, it's the ultimate assertion
  • 00:11:17.040 --> 00:11:20.000
  • of his authority, his power.
  • 00:11:20.010 --> 00:11:24.090
  • Some of you prefer the New Testament in Mark chapter 10.
  • 00:11:24.100 --> 00:11:26.200
  • Jesus is speaking, he says, "But from the beginning of creation
  • 00:11:26.210 --> 00:11:30.080
  • God made them male and female."
  • 00:11:30.090 --> 00:11:32.110
  • I think it's worth noting that Jesus believed God was
  • 00:11:32.120 --> 00:11:34.190
  • the creator.
  • 00:11:34.200 --> 00:11:36.080
  • If you're a believer in Jesus, I don't believe Jesus was playing
  • 00:11:36.090 --> 00:11:40.120
  • dumb because he lived in the 1st century.
  • 00:11:40.130 --> 00:11:43.190
  • Jesus said he was the truth, the way, the truth, and the life
  • 00:11:43.200 --> 00:11:48.170
  • and if he understood God to be creator I think it's probably
  • 00:11:48.180 --> 00:11:51.060
  • in your best interest, and mine, to accept what Jesus taught us.
  • 00:11:51.070 --> 00:11:54.220
  • That's probably also worth noting, at least in passing,
  • 00:11:54.230 --> 00:11:57.120
  • that Jesus said God made them male and female.
  • 00:11:57.130 --> 00:12:00.280
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:12:00.290 --> 00:12:02.290
  • I'm an advocate for choice and freedom and opportunity
  • 00:12:06.050 --> 00:12:09.010
  • and options, but we have drunk so deeply of that notion that we
  • 00:12:09.020 --> 00:12:12.000
  • can choose our futures that we imagine some choices God hasn't
  • 00:12:12.010 --> 00:12:15.260
  • given to us.
  • 00:12:15.270 --> 00:12:17.070
  • Mark 13, Jesus is speaking again, he said, "For those days
  • 00:12:17.080 --> 00:12:20.100
  • will be a time of tribulation such has not occurred
  • 00:12:20.110 --> 00:12:22.280
  • since the beginning of creation, which God created, until now."
  • 00:12:22.290 --> 00:12:27.150
  • Again, he's acknowledging God as creator.
  • 00:12:27.160 --> 00:12:30.210
  • In Romans chapter 1 it says, "Since the creation of the world
  • 00:12:30.220 --> 00:12:33.110
  • his invisible attributes, his eternal power, and divine nature
  • 00:12:33.120 --> 00:12:37.090
  • have been clearly seen being understood through what has been
  • 00:12:37.100 --> 00:12:41.020
  • made so that they are without excuse."
  • 00:12:41.030 --> 00:12:44.210
  • Paul makes a brilliant presentation in Romans chapter 1
  • 00:12:44.220 --> 00:12:47.250
  • and at the heart of it is this notion: that in creation there
  • 00:12:47.260 --> 00:12:50.280
  • is a revelation of God.
  • 00:12:50.290 --> 00:12:53.040
  • His eternal power and divine attributes are made plain in his
  • 00:12:53.050 --> 00:12:56.260
  • creation so that every human being is without an excuse.
  • 00:12:56.270 --> 00:13:00.250
  • It's a clear acknowledgement as God as creator, but Paul goes
  • 00:13:00.260 --> 00:13:04.100
  • on to say that we refuse to acknowledge the creator
  • 00:13:04.110 --> 00:13:08.180
  • and instead, we choose to worship created things.
  • 00:13:08.190 --> 00:13:13.010
  • Now, that isn't just about idols: images made
  • 00:13:13.020 --> 00:13:16.070
  • in the form of animals or people or something else.
  • 00:13:16.080 --> 00:13:19.250
  • When you worship creation--our generation I think is filled
  • 00:13:19.260 --> 00:13:24.240
  • with this notion as any generation, perhaps, it's far
  • 00:13:24.250 --> 00:13:27.260
  • more fashionable you get far more momentum in the public
  • 00:13:27.270 --> 00:13:30.120
  • arena of discussion if you're interested in saving the whales
  • 00:13:30.130 --> 00:13:33.240
  • or the Spotted owls or the Tennessee Walking Horses,
  • 00:13:33.250 --> 00:13:38.040
  • then if you initiated discussion on acknowledging God has
  • 00:13:38.050 --> 00:13:40.240
  • the creator.
  • 00:13:40.250 --> 00:13:42.220
  • What have we done?
  • 00:13:42.230 --> 00:13:44.020
  • We're more willing to worship creation than we are the one who
  • 00:13:44.030 --> 00:13:46.250
  • created it.
  • 00:13:46.260 --> 00:13:48.110
  • Now, I believe we have a responsibility of stewards
  • 00:13:48.120 --> 00:13:50.240
  • of the Earth and everything that's in it, to the care
  • 00:13:50.250 --> 00:13:52.100
  • for the planet in which we live, but I don't want to worship
  • 00:13:52.110 --> 00:13:55.020
  • the rainforest, I want to worship the one who
  • 00:13:55.030 --> 00:13:57.070
  • created them.
  • 00:13:57.080 --> 00:13:59.150
  • And there is some cultural pressure on that point--
  • 00:13:59.160 --> 00:14:01.250
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:14:01.260 --> 00:14:07.050
  • But it's helpful to understand it's not a new idea.
  • 00:14:07.060 --> 00:14:11.020
  • This challenge is not something that has emerged in the 21st
  • 00:14:11.030 --> 00:14:14.040
  • century, and those voices that suggest you're intellectually
  • 00:14:14.050 --> 00:14:17.280
  • a little off for a little uninformed or a little
  • 00:14:17.290 --> 00:14:20.270
  • simplistic or little antiquated because you believe in a God who
  • 00:14:20.280 --> 00:14:24.220
  • created the heavens and the Earth are not new voices.
  • 00:14:24.230 --> 00:14:29.030
  • In fact, they're the voices that go all the way back to Genesis 1
  • 00:14:29.040 --> 00:14:33.060
  • when the voice said in the garden, "Did God really say?"
  • 00:14:33.070 --> 00:14:38.270
  • There has been a spirit in the Earth challenging
  • 00:14:38.280 --> 00:14:41.260
  • the authority of Almighty God from our introduction
  • 00:14:41.270 --> 00:14:44.260
  • to the story.
  • 00:14:44.270 --> 00:14:47.020
  • So, don't apologize because you choose to believe in God.
  • 00:14:47.030 --> 00:14:51.110
  • Don't feel somehow inadequate or ill prepared or antiquated,
  • 00:14:51.120 --> 00:14:55.120
  • you're not.
  • 00:14:55.130 --> 00:14:56.240
  • In the days ahead of you when you will be most grateful
  • 00:14:56.250 --> 00:14:59.240
  • because you chose to believe in him.
  • 00:14:59.250 --> 00:15:01.270
  • Allen: God's creation is an amazing display of
  • 00:15:03.100 --> 00:15:06.080
  • his abundance.
  • 00:15:06.090 --> 00:15:07.180
  • It's amazing in its diversity, in its quantity,
  • 00:15:07.190 --> 00:15:10.260
  • in the creativity of it.
  • 00:15:10.270 --> 00:15:12.180
  • If he didn't withhold anything and creation, do you really
  • 00:15:12.190 --> 00:15:16.020
  • imagine he doesn't want something good for you?
  • 00:15:16.030 --> 00:15:18.050
  • male announcer: God's intent for us is that we should live
  • 00:15:18.060 --> 00:15:19.290
  • an abundant life, even in the midst of challenges,
  • 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:22.210
  • but how?
  • 00:15:22.220 --> 00:15:24.010
  • Pastor Allen explores all of this and more in "The Most

  • Together, we can make a difference.
  • 00:15:44.280 --> 00:15:46.230
  • Allen: Any number of the most brilliant scientists in our
  • 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:51.270
  • world today embrace an idea of intelligent design.
  • 00:15:51.280 --> 00:15:56.060
  • They look at our world, our creation, and then they say that
  • 00:15:56.070 --> 00:15:59.290
  • the order, the specificity, the exactness of our world
  • 00:16:00.020 --> 00:16:03.120
  • demands an explanation beyond just random occurrence.
  • 00:16:03.130 --> 00:16:09.150
  • That to look at the world and say it just happened is
  • 00:16:09.160 --> 00:16:17.270
  • perhaps not the highest and best use of our intellect.
  • 00:16:17.280 --> 00:16:23.140
  • Now, I know we've sat in all sorts of settings with highly
  • 00:16:23.150 --> 00:16:26.100
  • qualified people that use enormous words and then they've
  • 00:16:26.110 --> 00:16:30.070
  • helped you with that but I wanna-- I just wanna walk you
  • 00:16:30.080 --> 00:16:32.240
  • through that general notion.
  • 00:16:32.250 --> 00:16:34.050
  • This is a book and it's a Bible but let's just call it a book.
  • 00:16:34.060 --> 00:16:38.070
  • You know, publishing and books have had an enormous impact
  • 00:16:38.080 --> 00:16:41.120
  • on the world, but just imagine that you get a book.
  • 00:16:41.130 --> 00:16:45.110
  • Well, I know the paper comes from trees so let's just imagine
  • 00:16:45.120 --> 00:16:47.200
  • that sometime back in the primordial whatever,
  • 00:16:47.210 --> 00:16:50.170
  • a tree fell in the woods and it began to deteriorate as happens
  • 00:16:50.180 --> 00:16:58.280
  • and as it did remarkably that wood deteriorated into paper
  • 00:16:58.290 --> 00:17:08.160
  • in page form and they all piled up very neatly.
  • 00:17:08.170 --> 00:17:14.140
  • Now, in the wood where the tree fell there were snails
  • 00:17:14.150 --> 00:17:20.020
  • and an undisproportionate population of snails migrated
  • 00:17:20.030 --> 00:17:24.010
  • to where this paper had piled up.
  • 00:17:24.020 --> 00:17:28.070
  • And when the snails died lo and behold, they contained
  • 00:17:28.080 --> 00:17:31.280
  • a dye, ink-like.
  • 00:17:31.290 --> 00:17:38.200
  • And when the snails died that dye stained the paper
  • 00:17:38.210 --> 00:17:43.100
  • from the tree in such a precise pattern that one day you would
  • 00:17:43.110 --> 00:17:50.280
  • recognize it as language.
  • 00:17:50.290 --> 00:17:55.050
  • And one day, where this tree had fallen and these snails had
  • 00:17:55.060 --> 00:17:58.060
  • died, a cow walked up.
  • 00:17:58.070 --> 00:18:04.060
  • And that cow died right there where the tree died
  • 00:18:04.070 --> 00:18:07.110
  • and the snails died and some of the hide from that cow
  • 00:18:07.120 --> 00:18:12.240
  • managed to wrap itself around.
  • 00:18:12.250 --> 00:18:19.200
  • And then one dark night, there was a storm and lightning struck
  • 00:18:19.210 --> 00:18:23.050
  • the cow hide and the paper and a ribbon occurred.
  • 00:18:23.060 --> 00:18:32.130
  • Now, you will laugh at my little story and mock me in public
  • 00:18:32.140 --> 00:18:38.110
  • 'cause that seems improbable to you but you're willing
  • 00:18:38.120 --> 00:18:42.070
  • to believe that I just happened.
  • 00:18:42.080 --> 00:18:47.080
  • Poof.
  • 00:18:47.090 --> 00:18:52.060
  • The number of things that would have to happen precisely
  • 00:18:52.070 --> 00:18:57.200
  • in exactness, in order for this to happen, make believing that
  • 00:18:57.210 --> 00:19:05.200
  • this just happened, child's play.
  • 00:19:05.210 --> 00:19:11.070
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:19:11.080 --> 00:19:13.080
  • Now, why do we care?
  • 00:19:19.230 --> 00:19:21.120
  • I don't want to have a debate with the scientific community.
  • 00:19:21.130 --> 00:19:24.010
  • I'm not tryin' to pick a fight with the academics.
  • 00:19:24.020 --> 00:19:26.020
  • I enjoy learning and study, but if you imagine that God is
  • 00:19:26.030 --> 00:19:30.140
  • the creator, it changes everything about your
  • 00:19:30.150 --> 00:19:33.070
  • relationship with him.
  • 00:19:33.080 --> 00:19:35.170
  • Almighty God becomes your ally. It's the stuff of Scripture.
  • 00:19:35.180 --> 00:19:40.240
  • Look with me in Romans chapter 8 it says, "What then shall we say
  • 00:19:40.250 --> 00:19:44.110
  • in response to this?
  • 00:19:44.120 --> 00:19:45.250
  • If God is for us, who can be against us?"
  • 00:19:45.260 --> 00:19:50.180
  • If God is on your side do you really care who's
  • 00:19:50.190 --> 00:19:52.280
  • on the other side?
  • 00:19:52.290 --> 00:19:55.120
  • It's not bothering me much.
  • 00:19:55.130 --> 00:19:58.120
  • And what is the limit of God's concern for you?
  • 00:19:58.130 --> 00:20:01.150
  • It's expressed in the very next verse: "He who did not spare his
  • 00:20:01.160 --> 00:20:05.090
  • own son, but gave him up for us all.
  • 00:20:05.100 --> 00:20:07.260
  • How will he not also, along with him, graciously give
  • 00:20:07.270 --> 00:20:10.270
  • us all things?"
  • 00:20:10.280 --> 00:20:12.070
  • What has God given?
  • 00:20:12.080 --> 00:20:13.170
  • What has he done on your behalf?
  • 00:20:13.180 --> 00:20:14.280
  • He offered his son.
  • 00:20:14.290 --> 00:20:17.090
  • We had a problem we couldn't resolve on our own.
  • 00:20:17.100 --> 00:20:19.150
  • We were powerless to overcome the deficit we faced and God
  • 00:20:19.160 --> 00:20:24.000
  • provided his son.
  • 00:20:24.010 --> 00:20:27.080
  • "Who will bring any charge against those whom God
  • 00:20:27.090 --> 00:20:29.180
  • has chosen?
  • 00:20:29.190 --> 00:20:30.290
  • It is God who justifies."
  • 00:20:31.000 --> 00:20:32.170
  • Who is the one who justifies you and me?
  • 00:20:32.180 --> 00:20:34.190
  • The creator.
  • 00:20:34.200 --> 00:20:37.190
  • "Who is he that condemns?
  • 00:20:37.200 --> 00:20:39.270
  • Christ Jesus, who died, more than that who was raised to life
  • 00:20:39.280 --> 00:20:42.250
  • is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us."
  • 00:20:42.260 --> 00:20:47.070
  • You know Jesus is for you not because you're perfect.
  • 00:20:47.080 --> 00:20:51.030
  • The whole Jesus story acknowledges we're not perfect.
  • 00:20:51.040 --> 00:20:54.230
  • The reason the cross is necessary, the reason the grave
  • 00:20:54.240 --> 00:20:58.000
  • was filled is our failures and the reason the tomb was
  • 00:20:58.010 --> 00:21:02.260
  • empty was for our justification.
  • 00:21:02.270 --> 00:21:05.220
  • The Bible gives us permission to come boldly before the throne
  • 00:21:05.230 --> 00:21:08.270
  • of grace in our time of need not in our time of perfection.
  • 00:21:08.280 --> 00:21:14.170
  • If you're in a place today where you have stumbled and fallen
  • 00:21:14.180 --> 00:21:17.170
  • and drop the ball or taken the wrong path whatever metaphor
  • 00:21:17.180 --> 00:21:20.210
  • you use for being ungodly, don't walk away from God, walk
  • 00:21:20.220 --> 00:21:25.260
  • towards him.
  • 00:21:25.270 --> 00:21:27.070
  • God has made provision for you and me.
  • 00:21:27.080 --> 00:21:29.170
  • We don't have to pretend as Christ followers, we can come
  • 00:21:29.180 --> 00:21:31.250
  • to the Lord and say, "Oh, Lord, help me.
  • 00:21:31.260 --> 00:21:35.130
  • Help me, I'm wrong."
  • 00:21:35.140 --> 00:21:38.170
  • And Jesus will intercede for you.
  • 00:21:38.180 --> 00:21:41.010
  • That is an abundant life.
  • 00:21:41.020 --> 00:21:45.190
  • Who shall separate us from the love of Christ: trouble
  • 00:21:45.200 --> 00:21:48.050
  • or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness
  • 00:21:48.060 --> 00:21:50.260
  • or danger or sword?
  • 00:21:50.270 --> 00:21:52.060
  • It isn't that we believe in an abundant life just because
  • 00:21:52.070 --> 00:21:54.140
  • of ease and comfort, that's not the point at all.
  • 00:21:54.150 --> 00:21:58.170
  • In fact, there are times life is not easy and it isn't
  • 00:21:58.180 --> 00:22:00.240
  • comfortable for everybody.
  • 00:22:00.250 --> 00:22:05.100
  • But our hope in time and in eternity is linked
  • 00:22:05.110 --> 00:22:08.120
  • to Almighty God.
  • 00:22:08.130 --> 00:22:09.270
  • Now way back at the beginning of the year when we started this
  • 00:22:09.280 --> 00:22:12.050
  • study, I invited you towards a breakthrough this year.
  • 00:22:12.060 --> 00:22:16.230
  • It's beyond your power or your resources or your immune system
  • 00:22:16.240 --> 00:22:19.270
  • or your connections; it's something God does on
  • 00:22:19.280 --> 00:22:22.030
  • your behalf.
  • 00:22:22.040 --> 00:22:23.210
  • God is in that business and I didn't want the year to come
  • 00:22:23.220 --> 00:22:27.030
  • to a conclusion without revisiting that invitation.
  • 00:22:27.040 --> 00:22:30.070
  • Hundreds of you have shared with me breakthrough stories,
  • 00:22:30.080 --> 00:22:32.250
  • but we're not done yet.
  • 00:22:32.260 --> 00:22:35.020
  • We're not-- God's timing is one of the most inscrutable parts
  • 00:22:35.030 --> 00:22:38.000
  • of my relationship with him.
  • 00:22:38.010 --> 00:22:39.230
  • I don't understand that. I'll be candid with you.
  • 00:22:39.240 --> 00:22:42.040
  • When I read my Bible I don't understand it.
  • 00:22:42.050 --> 00:22:44.170
  • I know Daniel and the lion's den is a wonderful story and I'm
  • 00:22:44.180 --> 00:22:47.070
  • grateful to Daniel walked out of the den, but if you were
  • 00:22:47.080 --> 00:22:49.220
  • Daniel wouldn't it have been better if God had intervened
  • 00:22:49.230 --> 00:22:52.090
  • before you met the cats?
  • 00:22:52.100 --> 00:22:56.230
  • Would you've been willing to give that testimony that your
  • 00:22:56.240 --> 00:22:58.270
  • enemies were a rock from heaven fell on them and you never had
  • 00:22:58.280 --> 00:23:03.180
  • to go to the lions' den.
  • 00:23:03.190 --> 00:23:04.280
  • I like the story of the three guys that went in the furnace
  • 00:23:04.290 --> 00:23:07.070
  • and came out and didn't even smell smoky, but it'd be all
  • 00:23:07.080 --> 00:23:09.250
  • right with me if I didn't have to go in the furnace.
  • 00:23:09.260 --> 00:23:13.100
  • I'm grateful God delivered Peter from a prison, that he sent
  • 00:23:13.110 --> 00:23:16.010
  • an angel to wake him up, and the chains fell away,
  • 00:23:16.020 --> 00:23:18.060
  • and the door swung open but if it's all the same with you
  • 00:23:18.070 --> 00:23:20.260
  • I'd just skip the week prison, huh?
  • 00:23:20.270 --> 00:23:25.190
  • So, God's timing I can't always--I don't know,
  • 00:23:25.200 --> 00:23:28.280
  • but I believe in God.
  • 00:23:28.290 --> 00:23:30.080
  • Look at Ephesians 6 in verse 10: "Finally, be strong in the Lord
  • 00:23:30.090 --> 00:23:33.260
  • and in his mighty power."
  • 00:23:33.270 --> 00:23:36.130
  • That's a wonderful sentence.
  • 00:23:36.140 --> 00:23:38.050
  • What's the strength of our lives?
  • 00:23:38.060 --> 00:23:40.150
  • The power of God.
  • 00:23:40.160 --> 00:23:42.270
  • What enables us to stand?
  • 00:23:42.280 --> 00:23:44.160
  • The power of God.
  • 00:23:44.170 --> 00:23:46.120
  • The next sentence is a bit more awkward: "Put on the full armor
  • 00:23:46.130 --> 00:23:49.260
  • of God so that you can take your stand against
  • 00:23:49.270 --> 00:23:52.000
  • the devil's schemes."
  • 00:23:52.010 --> 00:23:53.110
  • I'd rather not.
  • 00:23:53.120 --> 00:23:57.010
  • I'd just would be happy if God would do that but apparently
  • 00:23:57.020 --> 00:24:01.090
  • it's a part of the assignment that comes with creation.
  • 00:24:01.100 --> 00:24:03.180
  • God created us to take a stand.
  • 00:24:03.190 --> 00:24:07.170
  • And he says put on your armor and take your stand.
  • 00:24:07.180 --> 00:24:10.190
  • This is not something which you can forfeit.
  • 00:24:10.200 --> 00:24:13.100
  • You can't be conscientious objector.
  • 00:24:13.110 --> 00:24:16.120
  • You're either being an overcomer or you're being overcome.
  • 00:24:16.130 --> 00:24:21.240
  • It explains a great deal.
  • 00:24:21.250 --> 00:24:23.170
  • Sitting in church does not make you a Christ follower.
  • 00:24:23.180 --> 00:24:26.020
  • You have to decide to put on the armor and to take
  • 00:24:26.030 --> 00:24:28.060
  • a stand.
  • 00:24:28.070 --> 00:24:29.230
  • Many of you would like different outcomes in the world, different
  • 00:24:29.240 --> 00:24:32.100
  • outcomes for your children and your grandchildren,
  • 00:24:32.110 --> 00:24:34.190
  • but you're busy and your life's too crowded and you don't really
  • 00:24:34.200 --> 00:24:36.250
  • think about it, you just wish somebody else would do that.
  • 00:24:36.260 --> 00:24:40.130
  • And God has touched us and said you're the somebody else;
  • 00:24:40.140 --> 00:24:44.050
  • I called you to go into all the world and make disciples
  • 00:24:44.060 --> 00:24:46.120
  • of all nations.
  • 00:24:46.130 --> 00:24:47.230
  • "No, that's what we have our pastor for."
  • 00:24:47.240 --> 00:24:50.250
  • It's a great idea, it just doesn't happen to be biblical.
  • 00:24:50.260 --> 00:24:55.080
  • God's called each and every one of us.
  • 00:24:55.090 --> 00:24:58.170
  • Look at Psalm 100 in verse 2, it says,
  • 00:24:59.040 --> 00:25:01.270
  • "Serve the Lord with gladness.
  • 00:25:01.280 --> 00:25:03.090
  • Come before him with joyful singing.
  • 00:25:03.100 --> 00:25:05.180
  • Know that the Lord himself, it is God.
  • 00:25:05.190 --> 00:25:07.100
  • It is he who has made us and not we ourselves."
  • 00:25:07.110 --> 00:25:10.000
  • There's a theme emerging here.
  • 00:25:10.010 --> 00:25:13.170
  • The one who made us has invited us to serve the Lord
  • 00:25:13.180 --> 00:25:16.200
  • with gladness to come before him with joyful singing.
  • 00:25:16.210 --> 00:25:20.230
  • It's in that that we begin to know that there is a God.
  • 00:25:20.240 --> 00:25:25.060
  • Serving the Lord is not something for hyper Christians,
  • 00:25:25.070 --> 00:25:28.280
  • for super Christians, for exceptional Christians.
  • 00:25:28.290 --> 00:25:31.200
  • We are all called to be disciple makers.
  • 00:25:31.210 --> 00:25:36.160
  • Allen: God's creation is an amazing display of
  • 00:25:38.000 --> 00:25:40.280
  • his abundance.
  • 00:25:40.290 --> 00:25:42.080
  • It's amazing in its diversity, in its quantity,
  • 00:25:42.090 --> 00:25:45.160
  • in the creativity of it.
  • 00:25:45.170 --> 00:25:47.280
  • If he didn't withhold anything and creation, do you really
  • 00:25:47.290 --> 00:25:50.220
  • imagine he doesn't want something good for you?
  • 00:25:50.230 --> 00:25:53.150
  • male announcer: God's intent for us is that we should live
  • 00:25:53.160 --> 00:25:54.290

  • 00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:58.010
  • but how?
  • 00:25:58.020 --> 00:25:59.110
