  • (upbeat music)
  • 00:00:03.210 --> 00:00:06.070
  • Hi, I'm Father Cedric Pisegna,
  • 00:00:30.290 --> 00:00:32.070
  • the host of Live with Passion.
  • 00:00:32.070 --> 00:00:33.130
  • I'm so glad that you tuned into the program.
  • 00:00:33.130 --> 00:00:35.080
  • I want to share from the gospel of Mark.
  • 00:00:35.080 --> 00:00:37.160
  • It comes from chapter 10.
  • 00:00:37.160 --> 00:00:38.240
  • It goes like this.
  • 00:00:38.240 --> 00:00:40.080
  • Jesus was setting out on his journey
  • 00:00:40.080 --> 00:00:42.220
  • and a man ran up to him
  • 00:00:42.220 --> 00:00:44.090
  • and knelt before him and asked him, a question.
  • 00:00:44.090 --> 00:00:46.130
  • "'Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
  • 00:00:46.130 --> 00:00:51.090
  • "And Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good?
  • 00:00:51.090 --> 00:00:54.250
  • "'There's no one good but God alone.
  • 00:00:54.250 --> 00:00:56.180
  • "'You know the commandments: Do not kill;
  • 00:00:57.270 --> 00:01:00.180
  • "'do not commit adultery;
  • 00:01:00.180 --> 00:01:01.260
  • "'do steal; do not bear false witness;
  • 00:01:01.260 --> 00:01:04.040
  • "'do not defraud; honor your father and mother.'
  • 00:01:04.040 --> 00:01:07.220
  • "And he said, 'Teacher, all these I have observed
  • 00:01:07.220 --> 00:01:10.010
  • "'from my youth.'
  • 00:01:10.010 --> 00:01:11.190
  • "And Jesus, looking at him, loved him
  • 00:01:11.190 --> 00:01:15.000
  • "and he said to him, 'You lack one thing.
  • 00:01:15.000 --> 00:01:17.180
  • "'Go, sell what you have,
  • 00:01:17.180 --> 00:01:19.020
  • "'give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven;
  • 00:01:19.020 --> 00:01:22.000
  • "'then come, follow me.'
  • 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:24.010
  • "At that saying his countenance fell,
  • 00:01:24.010 --> 00:01:26.120
  • "and he went away sorrowful;
  • 00:01:27.090 --> 00:01:28.240
  • "for he had great possessions."
  • 00:01:28.240 --> 00:01:31.010
  • In the gospel story, this young man was on a search.
  • 00:01:31.010 --> 00:01:34.220
  • And it's interesting because he had it all.
  • 00:01:34.220 --> 00:01:37.140
  • He had youth, he had money,
  • 00:01:37.140 --> 00:01:39.200
  • he had fame.
  • 00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:41.050
  • One of the gospels says that he was a ruler,
  • 00:01:41.050 --> 00:01:43.140
  • he was young, and he had money.
  • 00:01:43.140 --> 00:01:45.220
  • So, he had everything that the world says
  • 00:01:45.220 --> 00:01:47.130
  • that you've gotta have to be happy
  • 00:01:47.130 --> 00:01:48.250
  • yet he wasn't happy.
  • 00:01:48.250 --> 00:01:50.110
  • Do you know that inside of all of us
  • 00:01:50.110 --> 00:01:52.110
  • we have what I call a happiness meter?
  • 00:01:52.110 --> 00:01:55.070
  • It's kind of like a speedometer or a thermometer.
  • 00:01:55.070 --> 00:01:58.130
  • It has a little needle on it.
  • 00:01:58.130 --> 00:02:00.220
  • And deep within, if you really look
  • 00:02:00.220 --> 00:02:02.110
  • and you examine your heart,
  • 00:02:02.110 --> 00:02:04.050
  • you can tell whether or not you're happy.
  • 00:02:04.050 --> 00:02:06.260
  • You've gotta be honest with yourself.
  • 00:02:06.260 --> 00:02:08.190
  • 'Cause I remember when I was a young person,
  • 00:02:08.190 --> 00:02:10.070
  • I would wake up in the morning
  • 00:02:10.070 --> 00:02:11.200
  • and I'd start to stretch,
  • 00:02:11.200 --> 00:02:14.110
  • and all of a sudden, I said, "I'm not happy."
  • 00:02:14.110 --> 00:02:17.170
  • And that began my search for God.
  • 00:02:17.170 --> 00:02:20.100
  • So, within us, we have what I call,
  • 00:02:20.100 --> 00:02:23.230
  • it's kind of like a homing device,
  • 00:02:23.230 --> 00:02:25.240
  • this happiness meter.
  • 00:02:25.240 --> 00:02:27.130
  • So, listen to your heart
  • 00:02:27.130 --> 00:02:29.200
  • and let that happiness meter drive you.
  • 00:02:29.200 --> 00:02:32.010
  • I wasn't happy so I came to God.
  • 00:02:32.010 --> 00:02:34.210
  • This young man wasn't happy,
  • 00:02:34.210 --> 00:02:36.000
  • he came to Jesus.
  • 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:37.000
  • But the sad thing is
  • 00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:38.270
  • he went away sad, unfortunately.
  • 00:02:38.270 --> 00:02:41.240
  • When Jesus told him, "Give everything that you have
  • 00:02:41.240 --> 00:02:44.270
  • "and follow me," his face fell
  • 00:02:44.270 --> 00:02:48.040
  • and he went away sad.
  • 00:02:48.040 --> 00:02:49.080
  • That is such a tragic story.
  • 00:02:49.080 --> 00:02:51.210
  • Unfortunately, statisticians tell us
  • 00:02:51.210 --> 00:02:54.020
  • that 80% of our young people,
  • 00:02:54.020 --> 00:02:56.230
  • by age 25, have fallen away from the church.
  • 00:02:56.230 --> 00:02:59.210
  • 80%; that is so sad!
  • 00:02:59.210 --> 00:03:03.000
  • One time I was preaching, it was in Orlando, Florida,
  • 00:03:04.140 --> 00:03:08.130
  • I'll never forget this,
  • 00:03:08.130 --> 00:03:09.210
  • big, rich church, Saint Stephens,
  • 00:03:09.210 --> 00:03:13.090
  • state-of-the-art sound system, marble sanctuary,
  • 00:03:13.090 --> 00:03:16.010
  • very wealthy community,
  • 00:03:16.010 --> 00:03:17.160
  • and I preached the gospel there the best I could,
  • 00:03:17.160 --> 00:03:19.060
  • and as I'm leaving, this young man,
  • 00:03:19.060 --> 00:03:21.220
  • he had a gold chain around his neck,
  • 00:03:21.220 --> 00:03:23.190
  • as I was walkin' out, he grabs me by the arm.
  • 00:03:23.190 --> 00:03:27.000
  • And it reminded me of the story of the rich young man.
  • 00:03:27.000 --> 00:03:29.190
  • And he pulled me aside.
  • 00:03:29.190 --> 00:03:31.040
  • He said, "Father Cedric, I need to talk with you."
  • 00:03:31.040 --> 00:03:33.000
  • So, right away, I went and I talked with him.
  • 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:35.020
  • This is what he said.
  • 00:03:35.020 --> 00:03:36.180
  • He was probably 16, 17 years old, again, wealthy, young,
  • 00:03:36.180 --> 00:03:39.160
  • good looking, and this is what he said.
  • 00:03:39.160 --> 00:03:42.000
  • He said, "I want you to look around this church,"
  • 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:43.170
  • and I did.
  • 00:03:43.170 --> 00:03:44.210
  • He said, "It's beautiful, isn't it?"
  • 00:03:44.210 --> 00:03:45.290
  • I said, "Yeah, state-of-the-art sound system,
  • 00:03:45.290 --> 00:03:48.220
  • "marble sanctuary, the whole thing."
  • 00:03:48.220 --> 00:03:50.130
  • He said, "My parents have poured thousands of dollars
  • 00:03:50.130 --> 00:03:53.120
  • "into this building.
  • 00:03:53.120 --> 00:03:54.230
  • "They talk about it at supper."
  • 00:03:54.230 --> 00:03:57.020
  • And he said, "Week after week, Sunday after Sunday,
  • 00:03:57.020 --> 00:03:59.230
  • "they drag me to mass," and he said,
  • 00:03:59.230 --> 00:04:02.230
  • "I don't get anything out of it."
  • 00:04:02.230 --> 00:04:05.060
  • He said, "I don't know the God the
  • 00:04:05.060 --> 00:04:06.110
  • "to whom this building has been built.
  • 00:04:06.110 --> 00:04:07.140
  • "the only reason I go to mass,
  • 00:04:07.140 --> 00:04:08.220
  • "the only reason I go to church,
  • 00:04:08.220 --> 00:04:10.040
  • "is 'cause Mom and Dad make me come," he said.
  • 00:04:10.040 --> 00:04:11.260
  • "But when you were up there preaching," he said,
  • 00:04:11.260 --> 00:04:14.140
  • "I sensed something.
  • 00:04:14.140 --> 00:04:17.030
  • "I sensed that I needed to talk with you about this."
  • 00:04:17.030 --> 00:04:20.110
  • And to me, that's exactly what was happening
  • 00:04:20.110 --> 00:04:22.210
  • with the rich young man.
  • 00:04:22.210 --> 00:04:23.290
  • Apparently, he had heard Jesus preach
  • 00:04:23.290 --> 00:04:26.000
  • and it sparked something within him.
  • 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:28.050
  • You see, I believe that our young people are open
  • 00:04:28.050 --> 00:04:31.190
  • to being touched by God.
  • 00:04:31.190 --> 00:04:33.280
  • They all know, they all have this homing device
  • 00:04:33.280 --> 00:04:36.060
  • within them that God is true,
  • 00:04:36.060 --> 00:04:38.160
  • and they want to know.
  • 00:04:38.160 --> 00:04:40.070
  • The one thing I like about this young man in the story,
  • 00:04:40.070 --> 00:04:43.090
  • is that he asked questions.
  • 00:04:43.090 --> 00:04:46.070
  • That's the beginning of wisdom.
  • 00:04:46.070 --> 00:04:47.230
  • The book of wisdom says the beginning of wisdom
  • 00:04:47.230 --> 00:04:50.230
  • is the desire to learn, ask questions.
  • 00:04:50.230 --> 00:04:54.180
  • So, if you're a young person watching this program,
  • 00:04:54.180 --> 00:04:56.230
  • right now, ask questions.
  • 00:04:56.230 --> 00:05:00.060
  • Let your questions lead you on a quest, on a journey.
  • 00:05:00.060 --> 00:05:04.250
  • So, what I told that young man
  • 00:05:04.250 --> 00:05:06.020
  • that came up to me in Orlando was,
  • 00:05:06.020 --> 00:05:07.120
  • I said, "Keep asking the questions.
  • 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:09.150
  • "Jesus said, 'Seek and you will find,
  • 00:05:09.150 --> 00:05:11.220
  • "'knock and the door will be opened,
  • 00:05:11.220 --> 00:05:13.170
  • "'ask and you shall receive.'"
  • 00:05:13.170 --> 00:05:16.250
  • And that's exactly what happened in my life.
  • 00:05:16.250 --> 00:05:19.100
  • When I was hungry, when I was thirsty,
  • 00:05:19.100 --> 00:05:21.040
  • when I wasn't happy, when I was asking all those questions,
  • 00:05:21.040 --> 00:05:24.280
  • I came to the Bible, I came to the scriptures,
  • 00:05:24.280 --> 00:05:27.130
  • I came to prayer, I came to Jesus,
  • 00:05:27.130 --> 00:05:29.270
  • and I asked questions
  • 00:05:29.270 --> 00:05:31.240
  • because I really wanted to know.
  • 00:05:31.240 --> 00:05:33.230
  • And God is so faithful.
  • 00:05:33.230 --> 00:05:36.110
  • When you ask the questions, with a sincere heart,
  • 00:05:36.110 --> 00:05:40.220
  • and you're willing to make a sacrifice
  • 00:05:40.220 --> 00:05:42.160
  • and turn your life over to God,
  • 00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:44.170
  • God will answer those questions for you.
  • 00:05:44.170 --> 00:05:47.100
  • And he answered the questions for me,
  • 00:05:47.100 --> 00:05:49.010
  • touched me in a real powerful way.
  • 00:05:49.010 --> 00:05:50.260
  • This story has actually changed lives of people,
  • 00:05:50.260 --> 00:05:55.040
  • the story about the rich young man in the Bible.
  • 00:05:55.040 --> 00:05:57.250
  • Anthony of the desert, this is a man
  • 00:05:57.250 --> 00:05:59.240
  • that lived in the 200s, about 250 or so,
  • 00:05:59.240 --> 00:06:02.240
  • was a rich young man, 20 years old.
  • 00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:06.200
  • He heard this story about the rich young man in the Bible
  • 00:06:06.200 --> 00:06:10.060
  • and he felt that God was talking directly to him.
  • 00:06:10.060 --> 00:06:13.140
  • He went out into the desert,
  • 00:06:13.140 --> 00:06:14.280
  • lived to be about 100 years old,
  • 00:06:14.280 --> 00:06:16.130
  • maybe even more,
  • 00:06:16.130 --> 00:06:17.260
  • and he lived a life of prayer, dedication to Jesus.
  • 00:06:17.260 --> 00:06:21.200
  • And so, he will live forever.
  • 00:06:21.200 --> 00:06:24.120
  • But unfortunately, this young man that fell away,
  • 00:06:24.120 --> 00:06:27.230
  • we never hear from him again.
  • 00:06:27.230 --> 00:06:30.030
  • So, we're all faced with a choice.
  • 00:06:30.030 --> 00:06:31.290
  • Ask the questions.
  • 00:06:31.290 --> 00:06:33.170
  • Look within.
  • 00:06:33.170 --> 00:06:34.250
  • Are you happy?
  • 00:06:34.250 --> 00:06:36.110
  • And especially if you're a young person, right now.
  • 00:06:36.110 --> 00:06:38.140
  • I believe that Jesus wants to touch you.
  • 00:06:38.140 --> 00:06:42.200
  • "I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord."
  • 00:06:42.200 --> 00:06:45.170
  • That comes right from Jeremiah.
  • 00:06:45.170 --> 00:06:47.050
  • Jeremiah was a young prophet.
  • 00:06:47.050 --> 00:06:48.200
  • In fact, when God called him to be a prophet,
  • 00:06:48.200 --> 00:06:50.130
  • he said, "I'm too young."
  • 00:06:50.130 --> 00:06:51.260
  • And God said, "Don't say you're too young."
  • 00:06:51.260 --> 00:06:54.170
  • It says in the scriptures,
  • 00:06:54.170 --> 00:06:56.220
  • the prophet, Joel, "Your young people will have visions
  • 00:06:56.220 --> 00:07:01.130
  • "and your old people will dream dreams."
  • 00:07:01.130 --> 00:07:04.080
  • So, in other words, what God is saying is
  • 00:07:04.080 --> 00:07:06.200
  • that you're never too young to have a vision
  • 00:07:06.200 --> 00:07:08.220
  • and you're never too old to dream a dream.
  • 00:07:08.220 --> 00:07:11.120
  • And I'm believing that young people will be touched.
  • 00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:15.150
  • And hopefully, those of you who are watching my program,
  • 00:07:15.150 --> 00:07:18.150
  • as you hear this, you will look within
  • 00:07:18.150 --> 00:07:21.180
  • and say, "Am I happy?"
  • 00:07:21.180 --> 00:07:23.230
  • And ask God questions.
  • 00:07:23.230 --> 00:07:25.120
  • Be sincere, be honest.
  • 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:28.050
  • In your prayer life, just don't spit out words,
  • 00:07:28.050 --> 00:07:31.070
  • ask God the questions that are in your heart,
  • 00:07:31.070 --> 00:07:34.130
  • with sincerity, with honesty,
  • 00:07:34.130 --> 00:07:36.270
  • and be willing to give your heart to God
  • 00:07:36.270 --> 00:07:39.130
  • and watch what happens.
  • 00:07:39.130 --> 00:07:41.030
  • So, I remember, also, another young man,
  • 00:07:41.030 --> 00:07:43.140
  • his name was Francesco, lived in Italy,
  • 00:07:43.140 --> 00:07:46.100
  • and he was a partier.
  • 00:07:46.100 --> 00:07:48.030
  • He loved the high life.
  • 00:07:48.030 --> 00:07:49.120
  • In fact, he had a nickname, The Dancer,
  • 00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:52.050
  • and he went through a tragedy of suffering.
  • 00:07:52.050 --> 00:07:56.140
  • He got captured.
  • 00:07:56.140 --> 00:07:57.270
  • They were in a city-state war, there in Italy.
  • 00:07:57.270 --> 00:08:00.120
  • He got captured, held in prison for a year.
  • 00:08:00.120 --> 00:08:03.040
  • And when he went through some suffering,
  • 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:04.190
  • and by the way, oftentimes, and this happened in my life,
  • 00:08:04.190 --> 00:08:09.070
  • oftentimes, suffering is a way
  • 00:08:09.070 --> 00:08:11.210
  • that God will reach into your heart and touch you.
  • 00:08:11.210 --> 00:08:15.220
  • And if you're going through a suffering of some sort,
  • 00:08:15.220 --> 00:08:18.130
  • could be a breakup, could be a physical suffering,
  • 00:08:18.130 --> 00:08:21.180
  • maybe you lost a parent, whatever it is,
  • 00:08:21.180 --> 00:08:23.290
  • God will use that.
  • 00:08:23.290 --> 00:08:25.160
  • Just because you're going through suffering,
  • 00:08:25.160 --> 00:08:26.280
  • don't think that God's punishing you.
  • 00:08:26.280 --> 00:08:28.210
  • God is about to promote you, to bless you,
  • 00:08:28.210 --> 00:08:31.280
  • and to use that situation to actually bring you
  • 00:08:31.280 --> 00:08:35.010
  • to a deeper life in him.
  • 00:08:35.010 --> 00:08:37.040
  • So, Francesco went through this suffering.
  • 00:08:37.040 --> 00:08:39.010
  • He was held in prison for about a year.
  • 00:08:39.010 --> 00:08:40.160
  • He gets out of prison and the city-state war is over with
  • 00:08:40.160 --> 00:08:44.100
  • and all his friends come to him,
  • 00:08:44.100 --> 00:08:45.250
  • "Let's go party, you're The Dancer, let's have fun, again.
  • 00:08:45.250 --> 00:08:47.270
  • "Let's get the girls."
  • 00:08:47.270 --> 00:08:49.050
  • And he said, "No, during that year, I've changed.
  • 00:08:49.050 --> 00:08:52.210
  • "During that year, I sought God.
  • 00:08:53.250 --> 00:08:56.150
  • "And God didn't abandon me when I was suffering
  • 00:08:56.150 --> 00:08:58.240
  • "and I'm not gonna abandon God now."
  • 00:08:58.240 --> 00:09:01.160
  • In fact, he was wealthy, also.
  • 00:09:01.160 --> 00:09:03.100
  • His mom and dad were wealthy clothing merchants
  • 00:09:03.100 --> 00:09:07.270
  • and he gave up his inheritance
  • 00:09:07.270 --> 00:09:11.000
  • like Jesus had asked this rich young man to do.
  • 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:14.210
  • And he gave himself to Christ,
  • 00:09:14.210 --> 00:09:16.210
  • stripped himself naked, right before the bishop
  • 00:09:16.210 --> 00:09:18.250
  • and all his friends and parents and said,
  • 00:09:18.250 --> 00:09:21.100
  • "I have no father but my heavenly Father."
  • 00:09:21.100 --> 00:09:23.130
  • Of course, I'm talking about Francesco of Assisi.
  • 00:09:23.130 --> 00:09:26.180
  • Francis of Assisi became, arguably,
  • 00:09:26.180 --> 00:09:28.230
  • the greatest saint that ever lived
  • 00:09:28.230 --> 00:09:30.090
  • because he was touched as a young person.
  • 00:09:30.090 --> 00:09:32.290
  • And as I said, young people have such potential
  • 00:09:32.290 --> 00:09:36.000
  • to be touched.
  • 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:37.220
  • Did you notice how Jesus looked at this young man?
  • 00:09:37.220 --> 00:09:42.030
  • The young man was struggling.
  • 00:09:43.100 --> 00:09:44.170
  • He wasn't happy.
  • 00:09:44.170 --> 00:09:46.140
  • He wanted to know.
  • 00:09:46.140 --> 00:09:47.240
  • And Jesus didn't look at him condemning, saying,
  • 00:09:49.010 --> 00:09:51.080
  • no you've sinned and you've done all these things wrong.
  • 00:09:51.080 --> 00:09:53.130
  • It says in the scripture that Jesus looked
  • 00:09:53.130 --> 00:09:55.280
  • at him with love.
  • 00:09:55.280 --> 00:09:57.150
  • And that's the name of this program, "The Look of Love."
  • 00:09:57.150 --> 00:10:00.050
  • It's the same look that Jesus gave Peter.
  • 00:10:00.050 --> 00:10:03.050
  • If you remember, when Peter denied him three times,
  • 00:10:03.050 --> 00:10:05.150
  • as Jesus was taken to be judged,
  • 00:10:05.150 --> 00:10:09.180
  • Jesus gave him a look.
  • 00:10:09.180 --> 00:10:11.000
  • And it wasn't a look of condemnation or why did you deny me.
  • 00:10:12.190 --> 00:10:14.200
  • It as a look of love.
  • 00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:16.190
  • And Peter wept bitterly.
  • 00:10:16.190 --> 00:10:18.150
  • Because that's the way Jesus is.
  • 00:10:19.140 --> 00:10:20.280
  • He loves; he doesn't condemn.
  • 00:10:20.280 --> 00:10:23.180
  • "God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world,
  • 00:10:23.180 --> 00:10:27.050
  • "but to love the world."
  • 00:10:27.050 --> 00:10:29.010
  • I remember when I was a young man,
  • 00:10:29.010 --> 00:10:31.110
  • I was in high school, eight-grade English class.
  • 00:10:31.110 --> 00:10:34.050
  • I was sitting there with all the other students,
  • 00:10:34.050 --> 00:10:38.010
  • and as I'm sitting there, the teacher made his way
  • 00:10:38.010 --> 00:10:40.160
  • over to me with a book.
  • 00:10:40.160 --> 00:10:41.260
  • And he gave me this book.
  • 00:10:41.260 --> 00:10:43.110
  • And with the book, he gave me a look.
  • 00:10:43.110 --> 00:10:45.090
  • And it was a look of encouragement.
  • 00:10:46.160 --> 00:10:49.000
  • And I noticed that he wasn't giving a book
  • 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:51.110
  • to anybody else; he was just giving it to me.
  • 00:10:51.110 --> 00:10:53.240
  • And I looked at the book
  • 00:10:53.240 --> 00:10:55.090
  • and the book was Dickens' "Great Expectations."
  • 00:10:55.090 --> 00:10:59.010
  • And I knew what he was doing;
  • 00:10:59.010 --> 00:11:00.100
  • he was saying, through that book,
  • 00:11:00.100 --> 00:11:02.160
  • "Cedric, I see something in you."
  • 00:11:02.160 --> 00:11:05.270
  • And that look was a look of encouragement,
  • 00:11:05.270 --> 00:11:07.250
  • a look of love.
  • 00:11:07.250 --> 00:11:09.040
  • And I'll never forget that
  • 00:11:09.040 --> 00:11:10.110
  • because he said, he was showing me
  • 00:11:10.110 --> 00:11:13.030
  • that he was telling me through that
  • 00:11:13.030 --> 00:11:15.100
  • that I had potential.
  • 00:11:15.100 --> 00:11:16.200
  • And that's exactly what Jesus does for young people
  • 00:11:18.020 --> 00:11:20.010
  • when he looks at young people.
  • 00:11:20.010 --> 00:11:21.180
  • He sees your potential.
  • 00:11:22.190 --> 00:11:24.220
  • He sees your possibilities.
  • 00:11:24.220 --> 00:11:27.010
  • And he knows that you can become,
  • 00:11:27.010 --> 00:11:29.290
  • first of all, you can live forever,
  • 00:11:29.290 --> 00:11:31.190
  • become somebody eternally,
  • 00:11:31.190 --> 00:11:33.190
  • but you can realize your potential now.
  • 00:11:33.190 --> 00:11:35.100
  • So, I want you to visualize, right now,
  • 00:11:35.100 --> 00:11:38.190
  • Jesus looking at you,
  • 00:11:38.190 --> 00:11:39.250
  • not with condemnation, but with love,
  • 00:11:39.250 --> 00:11:42.190
  • so that you will realize your potential.
  • 00:11:42.190 --> 00:11:44.270
  • As I said, from Jeremiah 29:11,
  • 00:11:44.270 --> 00:11:47.090
  • "I know the plans is have for you, says the Lord,
  • 00:11:47.090 --> 00:11:50.030
  • "plans not for your defeat or woe,
  • 00:11:50.030 --> 00:11:53.040
  • "but plans for your welfare, plans for a future,
  • 00:11:53.040 --> 00:11:56.230
  • "plans that will prosper you."
  • 00:11:56.230 --> 00:11:59.040
  • I remember, I went to a World Youth Day.
  • 00:11:59.040 --> 00:12:02.110
  • We just had the World Youth Day in Panama City, Panama.
  • 00:12:02.110 --> 00:12:05.280
  • That was back in a few months ago,
  • 00:12:05.280 --> 00:12:09.230
  • and I remember I went to a World Youth Day
  • 00:12:09.230 --> 00:12:12.090
  • in Denver, Colorado; that was back in 1993.
  • 00:12:12.090 --> 00:12:15.070
  • I've never seen so many people gathered
  • 00:12:15.070 --> 00:12:16.280
  • in one place.
  • 00:12:16.280 --> 00:12:17.280
  • It was like half a million people
  • 00:12:17.280 --> 00:12:19.110
  • in Cherry Creek State Park, maybe up to a million,
  • 00:12:19.110 --> 00:12:22.030
  • not even quite sure.
  • 00:12:22.030 --> 00:12:23.220
  • Many of them teenagers, people in their 20s,
  • 00:12:23.220 --> 00:12:26.150
  • all gathered with Pope John Paul II,
  • 00:12:26.150 --> 00:12:29.210
  • all gathered to celebrate Jesus, to celebrate God.
  • 00:12:29.210 --> 00:12:33.080
  • Now, I remember, during the homily, during the sermon
  • 00:12:33.080 --> 00:12:35.140
  • that John Paul II preached, he tried to encourage people.
  • 00:12:35.140 --> 00:12:40.010
  • He tried to encourage the young people
  • 00:12:40.010 --> 00:12:42.130
  • to own their faith and not to be afraid,
  • 00:12:42.130 --> 00:12:46.240
  • to share their faith,
  • 00:12:46.240 --> 00:12:48.070
  • to become all that they can be.
  • 00:12:48.070 --> 00:12:49.240
  • So, our church is highly invested in our young people.
  • 00:12:49.240 --> 00:12:54.240
  • We want you to become all that you can be
  • 00:12:55.290 --> 00:12:57.130
  • and to become all that you can be,
  • 00:12:57.130 --> 00:12:59.060
  • we're inviting you to come to faith,
  • 00:12:59.060 --> 00:13:01.250
  • to receive the Holy Spirit,
  • 00:13:01.250 --> 00:13:04.060
  • to be filled with the grace of God.
  • 00:13:04.060 --> 00:13:06.230
  • Our church needs you
  • 00:13:06.230 --> 00:13:10.030
  • and we call out to you.
  • 00:13:10.030 --> 00:13:11.180
  • Don't leave; be a part of the community
  • 00:13:11.180 --> 00:13:14.170
  • and make a difference; you can do it.
  • 00:13:14.170 --> 00:13:17.030
  • So, I remember, years ago,
  • 00:13:17.030 --> 00:13:19.010
  • I was actually a youth minister,
  • 00:13:19.010 --> 00:13:21.140
  • and this is how I started off in ministry,
  • 00:13:21.140 --> 00:13:24.100
  • as a youth minister.
  • 00:13:24.100 --> 00:13:26.130
  • I gathered young people.
  • 00:13:26.130 --> 00:13:27.270
  • This was in St. Louis, Missouri.
  • 00:13:27.270 --> 00:13:29.290
  • I gathered a group of young people
  • 00:13:29.290 --> 00:13:31.180
  • and each and every one of them,
  • 00:13:31.180 --> 00:13:33.000
  • they were all different,
  • 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:34.120
  • but they all had such a gift,
  • 00:13:34.120 --> 00:13:38.070
  • such purity, such enthusiasm,
  • 00:13:38.070 --> 00:13:42.250
  • such potential.
  • 00:13:42.250 --> 00:13:44.290
  • And I remember, we used to do things
  • 00:13:44.290 --> 00:13:46.110
  • like athletic events, and social-type things,
  • 00:13:46.110 --> 00:13:49.100
  • and also, we would do outreach, helping people.
  • 00:13:49.100 --> 00:13:52.250
  • And I couldn't help but love these teenagers
  • 00:13:52.250 --> 00:13:55.180
  • because they were so good
  • 00:13:55.180 --> 00:13:57.140
  • and you could see the potential in them all.
  • 00:13:57.140 --> 00:13:59.130
  • And that's exactly what the church is saying
  • 00:13:59.130 --> 00:14:01.000
  • to all young people: You have potential,
  • 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:03.250
  • you have goodness, you have purity;
  • 00:14:03.250 --> 00:14:06.160
  • become all that you can be.
  • 00:14:06.160 --> 00:14:08.080
  • See, the church is giving you, right now,
  • 00:14:08.080 --> 00:14:10.200
  • not a look of condemnation,
  • 00:14:10.200 --> 00:14:12.110
  • not a look of you're not good enough,
  • 00:14:12.110 --> 00:14:13.200
  • or not a look of where have you been,
  • 00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:15.090
  • but a look of love.
  • 00:14:15.090 --> 00:14:17.010
  • And that's exactly how Jesus is looking at you, right now.
  • 00:14:18.140 --> 00:14:21.220
  • I've had so many good experiences with young people.
  • 00:14:21.220 --> 00:14:25.110
  • I remember, I was preaching a mission one time
  • 00:14:25.110 --> 00:14:28.010
  • in Louisiana, and most of the time,
  • 00:14:28.010 --> 00:14:31.210
  • the missions, it's like a Catholic version of a revival.
  • 00:14:31.210 --> 00:14:35.040
  • Most of the time the mission is just attended
  • 00:14:35.040 --> 00:14:37.070
  • by the older people, adults.
  • 00:14:37.070 --> 00:14:39.070
  • Well, I remember, at this mission it was in the morning.
  • 00:14:39.070 --> 00:14:42.100
  • We had mass at like nine o'clock in the morning.
  • 00:14:42.100 --> 00:14:44.230
  • Every morning, from the school,
  • 00:14:44.230 --> 00:14:47.070
  • six eighth-grade girls came, sat right in the front pew,
  • 00:14:47.070 --> 00:14:51.100
  • and they weren't just tryin' to get out of school,
  • 00:14:51.100 --> 00:14:53.130
  • they had asked their teacher,
  • 00:14:53.130 --> 00:14:55.010
  • that they wanted to be a part of that mission.
  • 00:14:55.010 --> 00:14:56.190
  • They were sitting there, right in front of me,
  • 00:14:56.190 --> 00:14:58.030
  • and every one of them had this smile
  • 00:14:58.030 --> 00:15:00.240
  • on their face and you could see the hunger,
  • 00:15:00.240 --> 00:15:03.110
  • you could see the thirst that they had
  • 00:15:03.110 --> 00:15:05.000
  • and how glad they were that they were there.
  • 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:07.030
  • Well, I wrote a book for young people called,
  • 00:15:07.030 --> 00:15:08.180
  • "God's Not Boring."
  • 00:15:08.180 --> 00:15:10.010
  • I signed it and I gave every one of them that book
  • 00:15:10.010 --> 00:15:11.270
  • because they encouraged me.
  • 00:15:11.270 --> 00:15:14.010
  • It helps me to see and to know
  • 00:15:14.010 --> 00:15:16.250
  • that young people are hungry for the truth,
  • 00:15:16.250 --> 00:15:19.290
  • thirsty for the truth.
  • 00:15:19.290 --> 00:15:21.060
  • And that's exactly what's going on
  • 00:15:21.060 --> 00:15:22.090
  • in this story, right here.
  • 00:15:22.090 --> 00:15:24.130
  • This rich young man was hungry, he was thirsty.
  • 00:15:24.130 --> 00:15:29.130
  • I always tell people, "Let your hunger guide you.
  • 00:15:30.250 --> 00:15:33.190
  • "Let your thirst direct you.
  • 00:15:33.190 --> 00:15:36.000
  • "Let your unhappiness, even, lead and guide you
  • 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:39.290
  • "to the fullness of truth."
  • 00:15:39.290 --> 00:15:41.200
  • So, these young girls made a real deep impression on me.
  • 00:15:41.200 --> 00:15:45.030
  • And speaking of that,
  • 00:15:45.030 --> 00:15:46.140
  • I remember, I was preaching another time,
  • 00:15:46.140 --> 00:15:48.000
  • and this time in Slidell, Louisiana,
  • 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:50.130
  • and I was there preaching about the Holy Spirit
  • 00:15:50.130 --> 00:15:53.070
  • and unbeknownst to me, there were two teenage girls,
  • 00:15:53.070 --> 00:15:56.070
  • two high school girls there.
  • 00:15:56.070 --> 00:15:58.140
  • And after I preached, they came up to me.
  • 00:15:58.140 --> 00:16:01.000
  • They said, "Father Cedric, thank you,"
  • 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:02.080
  • and they shook my hand and, "thank you
  • 00:16:02.080 --> 00:16:03.230
  • "for teaching about the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:16:03.230 --> 00:16:05.090
  • "We really appreciate that."
  • 00:16:05.090 --> 00:16:06.210
  • And they said, "We belong to a high school
  • 00:16:06.210 --> 00:16:09.090
  • "and we're gonna have a rally for God,
  • 00:16:09.090 --> 00:16:12.220
  • "and we want you to be our keynote speaker."
  • 00:16:12.220 --> 00:16:15.190
  • And I said, "What high school do you belong to?"
  • 00:16:15.190 --> 00:16:17.080
  • and they said, "Well, St. Scholastica,
  • 00:16:17.080 --> 00:16:18.240
  • "in Covington, Louisiana."
  • 00:16:18.240 --> 00:16:21.020
  • And I said, "Well, how many people go to this school?"
  • 00:16:21.020 --> 00:16:24.220
  • They said, "Well, about 800 young people."
  • 00:16:24.220 --> 00:16:26.240
  • And I said, "Well, thank you for the offer and everything,
  • 00:16:26.240 --> 00:16:30.120
  • "but I think I could probably be your grandfather
  • 00:16:30.120 --> 00:16:32.270
  • "and why don't you find somebody younger?"
  • 00:16:32.270 --> 00:16:34.140
  • "No, no, Father Cedric, you'd be great;
  • 00:16:34.140 --> 00:16:36.040
  • "please, please come."
  • 00:16:36.040 --> 00:16:37.190
  • And I saw their enthusiasm and it melted my heart.
  • 00:16:37.190 --> 00:16:40.110
  • There is nothing more beautiful
  • 00:16:41.080 --> 00:16:44.180
  • than a teenager that loves God,
  • 00:16:44.180 --> 00:16:47.100
  • that is willing to give their whole life to God.
  • 00:16:47.100 --> 00:16:49.230
  • And that's what I saw in these two young girls.
  • 00:16:49.230 --> 00:16:51.190
  • And so, I went to their high school
  • 00:16:51.190 --> 00:16:55.040
  • and I gave a talk to the young people.
  • 00:16:55.040 --> 00:16:57.070
  • And I remember, when I got there,
  • 00:16:57.070 --> 00:16:58.200
  • there were 800 girls sitting in the bleachers.
  • 00:16:58.200 --> 00:17:00.260
  • And I talked to them about Jesus,
  • 00:17:00.260 --> 00:17:02.280
  • personal relationship with Jesus,
  • 00:17:02.280 --> 00:17:04.180
  • not being afraid, realizing your potential,
  • 00:17:04.180 --> 00:17:07.200
  • that Jesus loves you just the way you are.
  • 00:17:07.200 --> 00:17:10.020
  • And I remember those young girls stood up
  • 00:17:10.020 --> 00:17:12.250
  • and they gave a witness, in front of those girls,
  • 00:17:12.250 --> 00:17:14.250
  • in front of everybody, and it so touched my heart
  • 00:17:14.250 --> 00:17:17.130
  • because when I was in high school,
  • 00:17:17.130 --> 00:17:19.090
  • I went to a public high school,
  • 00:17:19.090 --> 00:17:20.290
  • when I was in high school,
  • 00:17:20.290 --> 00:17:23.060
  • I would've never gotten up in front of my peers
  • 00:17:23.060 --> 00:17:25.110
  • and talked about Jesus because I didn't know who Jesus was.
  • 00:17:25.110 --> 00:17:29.030
  • I had fallen away.
  • 00:17:29.030 --> 00:17:31.110
  • I was far from him.
  • 00:17:31.110 --> 00:17:33.160
  • But these young girls who were,
  • 00:17:33.160 --> 00:17:34.260
  • they were precious, they were beautiful.
  • 00:17:34.260 --> 00:17:37.270
  • And I want you to know
  • 00:17:37.270 --> 00:17:40.090
  • that you can be filled with the same Holy Spirit
  • 00:17:40.090 --> 00:17:42.290
  • that touched those young girls.
  • 00:17:42.290 --> 00:17:44.270
  • And God will bring you to the fullness of your destiny
  • 00:17:44.270 --> 00:17:49.270
  • and help you to realize your potential.
  • 00:17:50.290 --> 00:17:53.130
  • One time, I was hearing confessions at a youth conference
  • 00:17:53.130 --> 00:17:56.250
  • and it was in Houston,
  • 00:17:56.250 --> 00:17:58.050
  • and there was a lot of young people gathered,
  • 00:17:58.050 --> 00:18:00.210
  • probably about a thousand young people.
  • 00:18:01.240 --> 00:18:03.170
  • And they had speakers, and different things,
  • 00:18:03.170 --> 00:18:05.080
  • and they'd asked a bunch of us priests
  • 00:18:05.080 --> 00:18:07.260
  • to come and hear confessions.
  • 00:18:07.260 --> 00:18:09.100
  • So, I remember I was in a room
  • 00:18:09.100 --> 00:18:11.070
  • with about 30 different priests,
  • 00:18:11.070 --> 00:18:13.110
  • and as I was there, all of a sudden,
  • 00:18:13.110 --> 00:18:15.020
  • they opened the door and they let the young people
  • 00:18:15.020 --> 00:18:17.170
  • that wanted to go to confession come in.
  • 00:18:17.170 --> 00:18:19.130
  • I had never seen this before in all of my life,
  • 00:18:19.130 --> 00:18:21.240
  • and I've been a priest now for almost 30 years.
  • 00:18:21.240 --> 00:18:24.270
  • I saw the young people, when they opened those doors,
  • 00:18:24.270 --> 00:18:28.060
  • run to the different priests
  • 00:18:28.060 --> 00:18:31.040
  • to go to confession.
  • 00:18:31.040 --> 00:18:32.200
  • They didn't just walk in there.
  • 00:18:32.200 --> 00:18:34.110
  • They ran to confession.
  • 00:18:34.110 --> 00:18:36.230
  • And I thought to myself, "I've never seen this, ever.
  • 00:18:36.230 --> 00:18:39.250
  • "Look at the devotion.
  • 00:18:39.250 --> 00:18:42.210
  • "Look at the love that these young people have.
  • 00:18:42.210 --> 00:18:45.200
  • "Look how they want to be reconciled to God."
  • 00:18:45.200 --> 00:18:47.250
  • I remember one young man came up to me.
  • 00:18:47.250 --> 00:18:50.040
  • He was just about to go away to college
  • 00:18:50.040 --> 00:18:52.200
  • and he confessed his sins and everything,
  • 00:18:52.200 --> 00:18:54.210
  • but what he said was this.
  • 00:18:54.210 --> 00:18:56.020
  • He said, "I'm just starting college
  • 00:18:56.020 --> 00:18:58.040
  • "and I want to make sure I'm right with God
  • 00:18:58.040 --> 00:18:59.290
  • "'cause I want God to bless my future."
  • 00:18:59.290 --> 00:19:02.160
  • Oh, I thought that was so good.
  • 00:19:02.160 --> 00:19:05.260
  • So, I have a great devotion to our youth
  • 00:19:05.260 --> 00:19:09.290
  • because I see such potential in them.
  • 00:19:09.290 --> 00:19:12.220
  • There's giftedness.
  • 00:19:12.220 --> 00:19:15.150
  • There's innocence.
  • 00:19:15.150 --> 00:19:16.220
  • There's potential.
  • 00:19:16.220 --> 00:19:18.110
  • And I'm believing that any of you who are a young person,
  • 00:19:18.110 --> 00:19:22.020
  • maybe you're not going to church,
  • 00:19:22.020 --> 00:19:23.130
  • or you've fallen away from your faith,
  • 00:19:23.130 --> 00:19:25.260
  • I'm gonna invite you to,
  • 00:19:25.260 --> 00:19:27.080
  • like this young person in the gospel,
  • 00:19:27.080 --> 00:19:31.000
  • ask questions.
  • 00:19:32.110 --> 00:19:33.210
  • Come to Jesus in your own private life,
  • 00:19:34.270 --> 00:19:37.050
  • your own prayer life,
  • 00:19:37.050 --> 00:19:38.290
  • and simply ask him, "Lord, are you real?
  • 00:19:38.290 --> 00:19:43.080
  • "Reveal yourself to me.
  • 00:19:44.270 --> 00:19:46.120
  • "Help me."
  • 00:19:47.090 --> 00:19:48.250
  • If you're going through a suffering in your life,
  • 00:19:48.250 --> 00:19:49.260
  • especially, I want you to know
  • 00:19:49.260 --> 00:19:51.240
  • that it's probably in God's providence.
  • 00:19:51.240 --> 00:19:55.040
  • He didn't give it to you,
  • 00:19:55.040 --> 00:19:56.250
  • but it's probably in his providence
  • 00:19:56.250 --> 00:19:58.130
  • to work through that suffering
  • 00:19:58.130 --> 00:20:00.160
  • to bring you back to God.
  • 00:20:00.160 --> 00:20:03.050
  • Because if you're like me, I had fallen away
  • 00:20:03.050 --> 00:20:06.190
  • until I suffered.
  • 00:20:06.190 --> 00:20:07.260
  • If you're like Francis of Assisi,
  • 00:20:07.260 --> 00:20:09.280
  • he was livin' a party life until he suffered.
  • 00:20:09.280 --> 00:20:13.170
  • If you're like the rich young man,
  • 00:20:13.170 --> 00:20:15.090
  • he probably didn't care until he suffered.
  • 00:20:15.090 --> 00:20:17.200
  • He was having a happiness problem.
  • 00:20:17.200 --> 00:20:19.110
  • Look within your heart and say, "Am I happy?"
  • 00:20:19.110 --> 00:20:22.280
  • And give God a chance
  • 00:20:22.280 --> 00:20:26.100
  • and watch what happens.
  • 00:20:26.100 --> 00:20:28.010
  • I was up at the Woodlands,
  • 00:20:28.010 --> 00:20:29.210
  • that's up in the north of Houston, one time,
  • 00:20:29.210 --> 00:20:31.290
  • and I was preaching.
  • 00:20:31.290 --> 00:20:33.070
  • After I finished preaching, I went to the book table
  • 00:20:34.190 --> 00:20:37.100
  • and I had written about seven books at the time
  • 00:20:37.100 --> 00:20:40.130
  • and wasn't quite sure what I was gonna write
  • 00:20:40.130 --> 00:20:42.090
  • for my next book.
  • 00:20:42.090 --> 00:20:44.040
  • And I remember, these two women come up to me,
  • 00:20:44.040 --> 00:20:46.080
  • and I will never forget it,
  • 00:20:46.080 --> 00:20:47.280
  • they came up with a big smile on their face,
  • 00:20:47.280 --> 00:20:50.180
  • and they came up to me and they said,
  • 00:20:50.180 --> 00:20:52.080
  • "We know what God wants you to write,
  • 00:20:52.080 --> 00:20:54.120
  • "the next book that God wants you to write."
  • 00:20:54.120 --> 00:20:56.030
  • And I kinda looked at them, I said,
  • 00:20:56.030 --> 00:20:57.160
  • "Well, what book does God want me to write?"
  • 00:20:57.160 --> 00:21:00.210
  • And they said, "A book for young people."
  • 00:21:00.210 --> 00:21:04.020
  • And it hit me like a ton of bricks.
  • 00:21:04.020 --> 00:21:06.200
  • A book for young people, of course.
  • 00:21:06.200 --> 00:21:09.080
  • I was a youth minister, worked with teenagers,
  • 00:21:09.080 --> 00:21:12.220
  • worked with young people, love 'em,
  • 00:21:12.220 --> 00:21:14.250
  • and I'd never written a book for young people.
  • 00:21:14.250 --> 00:21:16.150
  • So, I got to work and I tried to get my best stories,
  • 00:21:16.150 --> 00:21:20.190
  • things that are relevant because one of the things
  • 00:21:20.190 --> 00:21:23.140
  • that young people say is that our preaching isn't relevant,
  • 00:21:23.140 --> 00:21:27.120
  • it's not touching their lives.
  • 00:21:27.120 --> 00:21:28.280
  • So, the best I could, I got all these different stories
  • 00:21:28.280 --> 00:21:32.250
  • that are relevant and engaging,
  • 00:21:32.250 --> 00:21:35.020
  • and inspirational, and encouraging,
  • 00:21:35.020 --> 00:21:37.130
  • and I put them together in this book
  • 00:21:37.130 --> 00:21:39.040
  • and I call it, "God's Not Boring."
  • 00:21:39.040 --> 00:21:42.120
  • That's the name of my book for young people,
  • 00:21:42.120 --> 00:21:44.030
  • "God's Not Boring."
  • 00:21:44.030 --> 00:21:45.280
  • Because when I was a young person,
  • 00:21:45.280 --> 00:21:48.220
  • I was bored by mass and I thought to myself,
  • 00:21:48.220 --> 00:21:52.090
  • "If mass is like this, then maybe God's like that.
  • 00:21:52.090 --> 00:21:55.070
  • "So, maybe God's boring."
  • 00:21:55.070 --> 00:21:57.190
  • So, I fell away.
  • 00:21:57.190 --> 00:21:58.240
  • And that's, remember what I said,
  • 00:21:58.240 --> 00:22:00.090
  • 80% of our young people, before age 25, are falling away
  • 00:22:00.090 --> 00:22:03.060
  • because they're finding the religious services boring.
  • 00:22:03.060 --> 00:22:06.100
  • And they think that God's that way,
  • 00:22:06.100 --> 00:22:07.220
  • but God's not that way at all.
  • 00:22:07.220 --> 00:22:09.080
  • In fact, in my book, it's interesting,
  • 00:22:09.080 --> 00:22:11.000
  • on the cover of my book I put a person bungee jumping,
  • 00:22:11.000 --> 00:22:14.120
  • and people on a wave cutter,
  • 00:22:14.120 --> 00:22:18.010
  • and the whole theme of it is
  • 00:22:18.010 --> 00:22:19.120
  • that everything you like in life,
  • 00:22:19.120 --> 00:22:22.090
  • everything you like to do,
  • 00:22:22.090 --> 00:22:23.250
  • is a gift from God.
  • 00:22:23.250 --> 00:22:24.240
  • For example, God's not boring.
  • 00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:26.290
  • He gave you life in the first place.
  • 00:22:26.290 --> 00:22:29.170
  • And then, what are some of the things
  • 00:22:29.170 --> 00:22:31.230
  • that young people like?
  • 00:22:31.230 --> 00:22:33.020
  • For example, if you like music,
  • 00:22:33.020 --> 00:22:34.280
  • think about your favorite music.
  • 00:22:34.280 --> 00:22:36.250
  • God created that.
  • 00:22:36.250 --> 00:22:37.220
  • God's not boring.
  • 00:22:37.220 --> 00:22:39.100
  • And then, astronomy, or art, or poetry,
  • 00:22:39.100 --> 00:22:43.290
  • or swimming, or surfing,
  • 00:22:43.290 --> 00:22:46.250
  • computers, cars, iPhones, nature, mountains,
  • 00:22:46.250 --> 00:22:51.100
  • oceans, flowers, travel,
  • 00:22:51.100 --> 00:22:53.220
  • water skiing, whatever it is you like in life,
  • 00:22:53.220 --> 00:22:58.010
  • was created by God, comes from God in the first place.
  • 00:22:58.010 --> 00:23:01.150
  • So, what you have to do is
  • 00:23:01.150 --> 00:23:03.220
  • you have to realize that God is the author
  • 00:23:03.220 --> 00:23:07.060
  • of everything that is good.
  • 00:23:07.060 --> 00:23:09.010
  • Now, this is a series called,
  • 00:23:09.010 --> 00:23:10.250
  • "God is Good All the Time,
  • 00:23:10.250 --> 00:23:13.070
  • "All the Time God is Good."
  • 00:23:13.070 --> 00:23:15.190
  • So, everything in life, the goodness of life,
  • 00:23:15.190 --> 00:23:19.010
  • the blessings of life,
  • 00:23:19.010 --> 00:23:20.200
  • are all from God.
  • 00:23:20.200 --> 00:23:21.280
  • And I believe that as you go to church,
  • 00:23:21.280 --> 00:23:25.250
  • whatever denomination you're in,
  • 00:23:25.250 --> 00:23:28.100
  • if you give it another try,
  • 00:23:28.100 --> 00:23:30.110
  • you will sense the goodness of God reaching out to you.
  • 00:23:30.110 --> 00:23:34.050
  • Ask God questions, as I said.
  • 00:23:34.050 --> 00:23:37.140
  • Seek God if you're not happy,
  • 00:23:37.140 --> 00:23:39.290
  • and even if you are happy, he'll give you more happiness.
  • 00:23:39.290 --> 00:23:42.270
  • And then, being willing to surrender your life to God.
  • 00:23:42.270 --> 00:23:47.030
  • That's exactly what I did when I was 18 years old.
  • 00:23:47.030 --> 00:23:49.270
  • I couldn't give myself to him fully
  • 00:23:49.270 --> 00:23:52.020
  • because I didn't know what that meant yet,
  • 00:23:52.020 --> 00:23:53.170
  • but more and more, as my life has gone on,
  • 00:23:53.170 --> 00:23:56.010
  • and as you give yourself to God,
  • 00:23:56.010 --> 00:23:57.260
  • he gives himself to you
  • 00:23:57.260 --> 00:23:59.290
  • and brings eternal joy,
  • 00:23:59.290 --> 00:24:03.180
  • brings a deep, intimate relationship with him,
  • 00:24:03.180 --> 00:24:07.090
  • and brings you a joy that you've never known before.
  • 00:24:07.090 --> 00:24:09.230
  • So, this young man comes up to Jesus
  • 00:24:09.230 --> 00:24:12.170
  • and he asked him, "What do I gotta do to have life?"
  • 00:24:12.170 --> 00:24:15.100
  • And unfortunately, when Jesus said, "Give yourself to me,"
  • 00:24:15.100 --> 00:24:19.190
  • he went away sad.
  • 00:24:19.190 --> 00:24:21.210
  • And that's a tragic story in the gospel,
  • 00:24:21.210 --> 00:24:23.150
  • but so many others have come to Jesus
  • 00:24:23.150 --> 00:24:27.050
  • and given their lives to him.
  • 00:24:27.050 --> 00:24:28.290
  • Francesco of Assisi,
  • 00:24:28.290 --> 00:24:32.060
  • Anthony of the desert,
  • 00:24:32.060 --> 00:24:34.040
  • myself, so many others,
  • 00:24:34.040 --> 00:24:36.150
  • and have experienced the power and the grace
  • 00:24:36.150 --> 00:24:39.200
  • and the goodness of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:24:39.200 --> 00:24:42.080
  • Jesus looks at you, right now,
  • 00:24:42.080 --> 00:24:45.020
  • not with condemnation,
  • 00:24:45.020 --> 00:24:46.180
  • but with love.
  • 00:24:47.170 --> 00:24:48.140
  • He invites you to something real, something personal.
  • 00:24:49.270 --> 00:24:53.190
  • Come to him.
  • 00:24:53.190 --> 00:24:55.070
  • Ask him questions.
  • 00:24:55.070 --> 00:24:57.070
  • Give him your heart
  • 00:24:57.070 --> 00:24:59.000
  • and you will have eternal joy.
  • 00:24:59.000 --> 00:25:00.220
  • (gentle music) Don't just live,
  • 00:25:00.220 --> 00:25:01.210
  • Live with Passion.
  • 00:25:01.210 --> 00:25:03.110
  • (gentle music)
  • 00:25:03.110 --> 00:25:05.290
  • I got a letter from a woman in Connecticut
  • 00:25:07.040 --> 00:25:08.280
  • and she said, "Thank you, Father Cedric,
  • 00:25:08.280 --> 00:25:10.190
  • "for saving my life."
  • 00:25:10.190 --> 00:25:13.010
  • That makes it all worth it.
  • 00:25:13.010 --> 00:25:15.060
  • "I wish I could donate more to your magnificent cause."
  • 00:25:15.060 --> 00:25:18.010
  • It's a magnificent cause because what I'm doing is
  • 00:25:18.010 --> 00:25:20.010
  • I'm reaching out to young people, as you've just heard,
  • 00:25:20.010 --> 00:25:22.280
  • and older people, and people in prison,
  • 00:25:22.280 --> 00:25:26.110
  • and people who just happen to be flipping through.
  • 00:25:26.110 --> 00:25:29.040
  • So, I've written many books
  • 00:25:29.040 --> 00:25:31.090
  • to reach out even more deeply.
  • 00:25:31.090 --> 00:25:33.040
  • And one of the books, as you know,
  • 00:25:33.040 --> 00:25:34.090
  • is called, "God's Not Boring."
  • 00:25:34.090 --> 00:25:37.150
  • Specifically for younger people, but really,
  • 00:25:37.150 --> 00:25:40.010
  • all people can read it and get something out of this.
  • 00:25:40.010 --> 00:25:42.060
  • It makes a great gift for your grandson, granddaughter,
  • 00:25:42.060 --> 00:25:45.100
  • your children, and it will help them
  • 00:25:45.100 --> 00:25:47.260
  • to come to know God in a personal way.
  • 00:25:47.260 --> 00:25:50.150
  • "God's Not Boring."
  • 00:25:50.150 --> 00:25:51.290
  • It's only $15.00, shipping and handling, $20.00.
  • 00:25:51.290 --> 00:25:55.230
  • And go to my website,
  • 00:25:55.230 --> 00:25:58.110
  • call that toll-free number,

  • to reach out on TV.
  • 00:26:06.130 --> 00:26:07.280
  • Thank you so much, in advance.
