  • [Theme music]
  • 00:00:10.040 --> 00:00:17.020
  • -John Bradshaw: This is It Is Written.
  • 00:00:19.220 --> 00:00:21.010
  • I'm John Bradshaw. Thanks for joining me.
  • 00:00:21.020 --> 00:00:24.000
  • No, December the 25th is not the actual birthday of Jesus.
  • 00:00:24.010 --> 00:00:28.080
  • More than likely, there were not three Wise Men who came
  • 00:00:28.090 --> 00:00:31.260
  • to visit Jesus and His family.
  • 00:00:31.270 --> 00:00:34.010
  • We say three Wise Men because gold, frankincense,
  • 00:00:34.020 --> 00:00:38.060
  • and myrrh--that's three.
  • 00:00:38.070 --> 00:00:39.220
  • But the Bible doesn't say three Wise Men.
  • 00:00:39.230 --> 00:00:42.210
  • It simply says Wise Men.
  • 00:00:42.220 --> 00:00:45.010
  • Yes, at Christmas time there are many people who eat too much,
  • 00:00:45.020 --> 00:00:48.190
  • drink too much, spend too much.
  • 00:00:48.200 --> 00:00:52.140
  • But for all of that, it's the one time of the year
  • 00:00:52.150 --> 00:00:56.000
  • that touches hearts and impacts families like no other.
  • 00:00:56.010 --> 00:01:00.050
  • Christmas is still that time of the year where we say,
  • 00:01:00.060 --> 00:01:02.230
  • "Peace on earth and goodwill towards men."
  • 00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:05.270
  • And by and large, we mean it.
  • 00:01:05.280 --> 00:01:08.200
  • Christmas, even though there is no biblical command
  • 00:01:08.210 --> 00:01:11.290
  • to remember the birth of Jesus,
  • 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:14.030
  • gives us the opportunity to remember
  • 00:01:14.040 --> 00:01:16.190
  • and to tell and to celebrate
  • 00:01:16.200 --> 00:01:19.090
  • and to share the greatest story ever told.
  • 00:01:19.100 --> 00:01:24.060
  • So what does Christmas mean to you?
  • 00:01:24.070 --> 00:01:26.220
  • The Christmas story is the most remarkable story
  • 00:01:26.230 --> 00:01:29.100
  • about how God came near--
  • 00:01:29.110 --> 00:01:31.150
  • in fact, how Jesus visited this sinful earth.
  • 00:01:31.160 --> 00:01:35.270
  • And He came to this earth to bring to you and me
  • 00:01:35.280 --> 00:01:38.010
  • the gift of salvation.
  • 00:01:38.020 --> 00:01:40.010
  • So what does Christmas mean to you?
  • 00:01:40.020 --> 00:01:43.020
  • I spoke to some friends and asked them
  • 00:01:43.030 --> 00:01:44.160
  • what is special to them about Christmas,
  • 00:01:44.170 --> 00:01:48.230
  • and the responses I received reveal to me that
  • 00:01:48.240 --> 00:01:52.290
  • there's a power in Christmas.
  • 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:54.160
  • Not a magic. Something far greater.
  • 00:01:54.170 --> 00:01:57.190
  • There's something special about Christmas day
  • 00:01:57.200 --> 00:01:59.290
  • that manages to touch hearts and impact lives.
  • 00:02:00.020 --> 00:02:03.080
  • There's something special about the Christmas season
  • 00:02:03.090 --> 00:02:06.020
  • that reminds us of a greater purpose,
  • 00:02:06.030 --> 00:02:08.260
  • of a great God who loved this world so very much that He gave.
  • 00:02:08.270 --> 00:02:13.220
  • -Woman 1: Christmas when I was a child was very fun.
  • 00:02:14.070 --> 00:02:17.010
  • I grew up in Puerto Rico,
  • 00:02:17.020 --> 00:02:18.210
  • so it was, you know, tropical scenery.
  • 00:02:18.220 --> 00:02:21.100
  • It was just, it was always surrounded,
  • 00:02:21.110 --> 00:02:24.160
  • um, by a lot of lively music, a lot of just fun with family,
  • 00:02:24.170 --> 00:02:29.210
  • a lot of stories from the olden days.
  • 00:02:29.220 --> 00:02:32.110
  • -Man 1: Well, we were pretty traditional when we were,
  • 00:02:32.120 --> 00:02:34.180
  • when we were kids.
  • 00:02:34.190 --> 00:02:35.220
  • Um, you know, we kinda did the whole Santa thing
  • 00:02:35.230 --> 00:02:39.090
  • at that point in time.
  • 00:02:39.100 --> 00:02:41.100
  • And so, you know, family was always the cornerstone.
  • 00:02:41.110 --> 00:02:46.120
  • -Man 2: Well, when I was a child,
  • 00:02:46.130 --> 00:02:48.190
  • of course we always looked forward to Christmas.
  • 00:02:48.200 --> 00:02:51.010
  • We weren't a real close family, but, um, yeah, Christmas time--
  • 00:02:51.020 --> 00:02:54.270
  • my dad worked for Sears and Roebuck,
  • 00:02:54.280 --> 00:02:56.120
  • so there were a lot of toys available.
  • 00:02:56.130 --> 00:02:58.100
  • My favorite, of course, was the train.
  • 00:02:58.110 --> 00:03:01.000
  • The train around the Christmas tree--that was always fun.
  • 00:03:01.010 --> 00:03:04.160
  • -Man 3: For me, Christmas was a lot of getting together
  • 00:03:04.170 --> 00:03:08.180
  • with family and just spending time together.
  • 00:03:08.190 --> 00:03:12.070
  • We did get toys when we were growing up,
  • 00:03:12.080 --> 00:03:14.280
  • and I would say that probably the one toy
  • 00:03:14.290 --> 00:03:16.210
  • that I remember the most was a Lego train set.
  • 00:03:16.220 --> 00:03:21.020
  • I really, really wanted this Lego train set,
  • 00:03:21.030 --> 00:03:23.220
  • and I, for some reason, remember how expensive it was.
  • 00:03:23.230 --> 00:03:25.280
  • It was $199, and that was a lot of money--
  • 00:03:25.290 --> 00:03:29.070
  • a lot of money that my parents did not have
  • 00:03:29.080 --> 00:03:31.090
  • when I was growing up.
  • 00:03:31.100 --> 00:03:33.020
  • But I begged and I begged and I begged,
  • 00:03:33.030 --> 00:03:35.050
  • and somehow they came up with the money.
  • 00:03:35.060 --> 00:03:37.130
  • Only later did I find out my grandma had bought it for me.
  • 00:03:37.140 --> 00:03:41.070
  • -Man 4: I'm Filipino, and so-- and I'm also a pastor's kid--
  • 00:03:41.080 --> 00:03:44.190
  • and so Christmas for me has never really been,
  • 00:03:44.200 --> 00:03:47.220
  • uh, just a family thing.
  • 00:03:47.230 --> 00:03:49.010
  • It's more so been church and friends and all of that.
  • 00:03:49.020 --> 00:03:53.080
  • Whenever Christmas time comes around,
  • 00:03:53.090 --> 00:03:54.250
  • there's always been a party where all of my friends
  • 00:03:54.260 --> 00:03:57.160
  • and all of my church family could just, like, come together
  • 00:03:57.170 --> 00:04:00.070
  • and just be in each other's company.
  • 00:04:00.080 --> 00:04:03.150
  • -Woman 2: Well, as an islander,
  • 00:04:03.160 --> 00:04:04.210
  • a lot of things that we like to do is eat,
  • 00:04:04.220 --> 00:04:07.010
  • [laughs] as you can see.
  • 00:04:07.020 --> 00:04:08.190
  • It's always been a big thing with, like, meals, meal prep,
  • 00:04:08.200 --> 00:04:12.120
  • um, sometimes we spend all night cooking things
  • 00:04:12.130 --> 00:04:16.100
  • 'cause family come from far and near.
  • 00:04:16.110 --> 00:04:19.240
  • So food has always been a big thing for Christmas for us.
  • 00:04:19.250 --> 00:04:23.130
  • It was more, more food than the gifts. [laughs]
  • 00:04:23.140 --> 00:04:26.010
  • -Boy: You, you get to eat good suppers,
  • 00:04:26.020 --> 00:04:29.010
  • and you get to spend time with your families.
  • 00:04:29.020 --> 00:04:32.050
  • -Man 5: Yeah, Christmas growing up as a child, um,
  • 00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:35.000
  • a lot of food, a lot of music, family members,
  • 00:04:35.010 --> 00:04:38.000
  • um, just a big community of people coming together.
  • 00:04:38.010 --> 00:04:42.050
  • And, um, the highlight is, uh, growing up in a neighborhood
  • 00:04:42.060 --> 00:04:46.120
  • where kids were just, like,
  • 00:04:46.130 --> 00:04:48.050
  • entering into each other's homes,
  • 00:04:48.060 --> 00:04:49.260
  • and, uh, there was food everywhere.
  • 00:04:49.270 --> 00:04:52.080
  • You know, you'd walk into this home Christmas Eve,
  • 00:04:52.090 --> 00:04:54.210
  • and there's, there's food on the table.
  • 00:04:54.220 --> 00:04:56.030
  • You'd eat it and talk with your friends and play.
  • 00:04:56.040 --> 00:04:58.170
  • So Christmas was just a whole big community event.
  • 00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:02.010
  • -John: What's your favorite Christmas memory?
  • 00:05:02.020 --> 00:05:05.030
  • -Woman 1: I'd probably have to say the Christmas
  • 00:05:05.040 --> 00:05:06.250
  • that my grandma was able to come from Ecuador
  • 00:05:06.260 --> 00:05:09.130
  • to visit us for the first time.
  • 00:05:09.140 --> 00:05:11.040
  • Like, I got to meet her.
  • 00:05:11.050 --> 00:05:12.290
  • I was kinda nervous, actually, 'cause I,
  • 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:14.160
  • I didn't know what to expect.
  • 00:05:14.170 --> 00:05:15.280
  • But it was fun; it turned out really fun.
  • 00:05:15.290 --> 00:05:18.120
  • She had a lot of stories and, like, new traditions for us,
  • 00:05:18.130 --> 00:05:21.070
  • so that was a really good Christmas.
  • 00:05:21.080 --> 00:05:23.270
  • -Woman 3: One of the ones that stands out a lot to me
  • 00:05:23.280 --> 00:05:26.040
  • is one Christmas when, uh, one of my sisters had gone through
  • 00:05:26.050 --> 00:05:29.130
  • a huge, like, a health crisis, and she'd nearly died,
  • 00:05:29.140 --> 00:05:33.080
  • and our money was, like, really low.
  • 00:05:33.090 --> 00:05:35.020
  • We didn't have money for presents;
  • 00:05:35.030 --> 00:05:37.130
  • uh, we didn't have money for a Christmas tree,
  • 00:05:37.140 --> 00:05:38.290
  • which we always try to get every year,
  • 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:41.000
  • and we were feeling pretty down in the dumps and sad.
  • 00:05:41.010 --> 00:05:44.060
  • And, uh, we heard on the radio one day
  • 00:05:44.070 --> 00:05:46.250
  • that there's this place that had Christmas trees
  • 00:05:46.260 --> 00:05:49.090
  • that they're just gonna give away for free.
  • 00:05:49.100 --> 00:05:51.150
  • So two days before Christmas, we go down at night
  • 00:05:51.160 --> 00:05:55.010
  • to see what they had, and they had about, I don't know,
  • 00:05:55.020 --> 00:05:57.190
  • a dozen or so Christmas trees, and we picked one out.
  • 00:05:57.200 --> 00:05:59.290
  • It was big, tall, beautiful, maybe like 9 or 10 feet or so,
  • 00:06:00.020 --> 00:06:03.270
  • and brought it back and decorated it.
  • 00:06:03.280 --> 00:06:05.130
  • And I can't remember if anybody scrounged up presents or not,
  • 00:06:05.140 --> 00:06:08.120
  • but we loved the tree and just looking at it,
  • 00:06:08.130 --> 00:06:10.260
  • looking at the lights.
  • 00:06:10.270 --> 00:06:11.250
  • And it just, it cheered us up.
  • 00:06:11.260 --> 00:06:14.050
  • And that's one of my favorite memories.
  • 00:06:14.060 --> 00:06:16.090
  • -Woman 4: We had invited this couple that had
  • 00:06:16.100 --> 00:06:19.050
  • three little children under school age,
  • 00:06:19.060 --> 00:06:22.060
  • and, uh, he was a student, a theology student.
  • 00:06:22.070 --> 00:06:25.290
  • And we invited them for Christmas.
  • 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:28.020
  • And, um, I bought, or had in mind at least,
  • 00:06:28.030 --> 00:06:31.070
  • presents for them all.
  • 00:06:31.080 --> 00:06:32.210
  • But, you know, men are hard to buy for, so I asked the lady.
  • 00:06:32.220 --> 00:06:35.010
  • [laughs] And she said there was a kind of Bible that he wanted.
  • 00:06:35.020 --> 00:06:39.070
  • Um, I don't remember the name, and I had to order it.
  • 00:06:39.080 --> 00:06:43.020
  • Anyway, when he opened up his, uh, present,
  • 00:06:43.030 --> 00:06:48.020
  • the look on his face-- the surprise and the pleasure--
  • 00:06:48.030 --> 00:06:51.260
  • was worth all the effort. [laughs]
  • 00:06:51.270 --> 00:06:54.250
  • I remember that more than the children opening their gifts.
  • 00:06:54.260 --> 00:06:58.190
  • I got to thinking, you know, one day God's--
  • 00:06:58.200 --> 00:07:01.260
  • Jesus is going to introduce us to His Father,
  • 00:07:01.270 --> 00:07:05.010
  • and I know the Father won't be surprised
  • 00:07:05.020 --> 00:07:08.170
  • because He knows everything,
  • 00:07:08.180 --> 00:07:10.060
  • but I thought He'll certainly have a pleased expression
  • 00:07:10.070 --> 00:07:13.220
  • on His face, and I hope to be there to see that.
  • 00:07:13.230 --> 00:07:17.140
  • -Man 2: My favorite Christmas memory had to be...
  • 00:07:17.150 --> 00:07:21.040
  • the day I asked Phoebe to marry me.
  • 00:07:21.050 --> 00:07:24.120
  • That really was exciting.
  • 00:07:24.130 --> 00:07:26.180
  • Well, I was going to, on an errand,
  • 00:07:26.190 --> 00:07:28.260
  • waiting for her to get done at the school of nursing.
  • 00:07:28.270 --> 00:07:31.270
  • And I went down this hill without realizing
  • 00:07:31.280 --> 00:07:33.210
  • that I sped up.
  • 00:07:33.220 --> 00:07:35.110
  • I put the brake on, but it was too late.
  • 00:07:35.120 --> 00:07:38.150
  • I told the policeman I'd just driven clear across the country
  • 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:41.110
  • to get here, but he wasn't even helpful.
  • 00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:45.000
  • I had to go to court.
  • 00:07:45.010 --> 00:07:46.140
  • My turn came, and,
  • 00:07:46.150 --> 00:07:48.110
  • and he said, "Well, how do you plead?"
  • 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:49.210
  • And I said, "Guilty, sir."
  • 00:07:49.220 --> 00:07:52.250
  • And he leaned forward like, "Well?" [laughs]
  • 00:07:52.260 --> 00:07:56.010
  • What else could I do but tell him my story? [laughs]
  • 00:07:56.020 --> 00:07:58.250
  • And I said, "Well, maybe it just goes to show that men
  • 00:07:58.260 --> 00:08:02.270
  • about to get engaged to be married shouldn't be driving."
  • 00:08:02.280 --> 00:08:05.250
  • And the whole courtroom started laughing. [laughs]
  • 00:08:05.260 --> 00:08:08.230
  • And he laughed--first time.
  • 00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:11.170
  • And he said, "What did she say?"
  • 00:08:11.180 --> 00:08:13.250
  • And I said, "She said yes."
  • 00:08:13.260 --> 00:08:16.040
  • And then he said, "Mr. Cleveland,
  • 00:08:16.050 --> 00:08:18.000
  • you can go out the free door today. Merry Christmas."
  • 00:08:18.010 --> 00:08:21.070
  • -John: I'll be back with more in just a moment.
  • 00:08:21.080 --> 00:08:24.010
  • [Music]
  • 00:08:24.020 --> 00:08:31.020
  • -Announcer: The gift of the Holy Spirit.

  • -John Bradshaw: Thanks for joining me today
  • 00:09:04.160 --> 00:09:05.210
  • on It Is Written.
  • 00:09:05.220 --> 00:09:06.210
  • I'm John Bradshaw.
  • 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:08.070
  • So what does Christmas mean to you?
  • 00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:09.270
  • What should Christmas mean to you?
  • 00:09:09.280 --> 00:09:13.040
  • I asked some people what Christmas meant to them.
  • 00:09:13.050 --> 00:09:16.200
  • Here's what they told me.
  • 00:09:16.210 --> 00:09:18.060
  • -Woman 5: Well, first of all, it means the birth of Christ.
  • 00:09:18.070 --> 00:09:21.260
  • He came into this world for our sins, died for our sins,
  • 00:09:21.270 --> 00:09:26.290
  • and He has made a...
  • 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:29.210
  • an extreme impression on me throughout my whole lifetime.
  • 00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:33.120
  • And I think about Him every day, and what He went through for me.
  • 00:09:33.130 --> 00:09:37.280
  • -Woman 2: The first thing that comes to mind
  • 00:09:37.290 --> 00:09:39.210
  • when you say "Christmas" is family.
  • 00:09:39.220 --> 00:09:42.110
  • -Man 6: And also Christmas, of course, means food.
  • 00:09:42.120 --> 00:09:45.160
  • You got to have a lot of good food for Christmas.
  • 00:09:45.170 --> 00:09:48.120
  • -Man 7: Christmas means my grandma.
  • 00:09:48.130 --> 00:09:51.280
  • Super easy for her to get in the spotlight 'cause
  • 00:09:51.290 --> 00:09:54.010
  • she's always telling jokes and always doing that stuff.
  • 00:09:54.020 --> 00:09:56.090
  • So, I'd say it's her.
  • 00:09:56.100 --> 00:09:59.220
  • -Woman 6: It means a lot more, um, now that I have my own kids.
  • 00:09:59.230 --> 00:10:03.130
  • Um, I, I went through a couple years where I was kind of
  • 00:10:03.140 --> 00:10:06.150
  • the Grinch and didn't really wanna, you know,
  • 00:10:06.160 --> 00:10:09.030
  • deal with Christmas 'cause it just seemed like a hassle
  • 00:10:09.040 --> 00:10:11.050
  • before I had kids.
  • 00:10:11.060 --> 00:10:12.290
  • Um, and now it's just a whole lot more fun
  • 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:15.100
  • 'cause you can kinda relive it through them again.
  • 00:10:15.110 --> 00:10:18.100
  • -Man 2: It's such a blessing to get together with your children,
  • 00:10:18.110 --> 00:10:21.110
  • your grandchildren,
  • 00:10:21.120 --> 00:10:23.030
  • and just be able to really have time together.
  • 00:10:23.040 --> 00:10:26.010
  • You know, the world is in so much turmoil,
  • 00:10:26.020 --> 00:10:29.080
  • and we hear it every day.
  • 00:10:29.090 --> 00:10:31.170
  • But when that family is together,
  • 00:10:31.180 --> 00:10:33.010
  • when you're up in that mountain cabin,
  • 00:10:33.020 --> 00:10:35.010
  • and the snow is all around, and, and you're telling stories,
  • 00:10:35.020 --> 00:10:38.100
  • and, and you're making Norwegian prune cookies,
  • 00:10:38.110 --> 00:10:41.040
  • and, and, uh, just enjoying each other,
  • 00:10:41.050 --> 00:10:43.290
  • it just, it just transports you to another place.
  • 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:48.010
  • And those are the kind of moments I wished
  • 00:10:48.020 --> 00:10:50.190
  • everybody could enjoy because it's just so rewarding.
  • 00:10:50.200 --> 00:10:54.120
  • -John: What's the most special Christmas gift
  • 00:10:54.130 --> 00:10:56.110
  • that you've ever received?
  • 00:10:56.120 --> 00:10:57.290
  • -Man 6: [Laughs] The best Christmas gift I ever received.
  • 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:01.120
  • Uh, it's kinda funny for--
  • 00:11:01.130 --> 00:11:03.040
  • uh, I grew up with, uh, three sisters, no brothers,
  • 00:11:03.050 --> 00:11:06.050
  • and so every year I was always like,
  • 00:11:06.060 --> 00:11:08.070
  • "Mom, can I get a brother for Christmas?"
  • 00:11:08.080 --> 00:11:10.160
  • And she always was like, "No."
  • 00:11:10.170 --> 00:11:12.060
  • And as an adult, I understand the absurdity of that question,
  • 00:11:12.070 --> 00:11:15.040
  • but as my sisters have all gotten older,
  • 00:11:15.050 --> 00:11:17.080
  • they've all married guys, so I now have three brothers-in-law.
  • 00:11:17.090 --> 00:11:21.060
  • And all of their anniversaries are within a week of Christmas.
  • 00:11:21.070 --> 00:11:24.190
  • So it's kind of a reminder that, you know,
  • 00:11:24.200 --> 00:11:26.250
  • I got my childhood wish of having a brother.
  • 00:11:26.260 --> 00:11:29.080
  • -Woman 7: I think the best gift I ever received
  • 00:11:29.090 --> 00:11:31.070
  • was probably a music box from my great-grandpa.
  • 00:11:31.080 --> 00:11:35.020
  • Um, just the fact that it was from him was a big factor
  • 00:11:35.030 --> 00:11:38.030
  • 'cause he hasn't been around for a while.
  • 00:11:38.040 --> 00:11:40.040
  • But, um, I mean, I had been wanting one for a long time
  • 00:11:40.050 --> 00:11:45.060
  • and just to finally have it, and it was great,
  • 00:11:45.070 --> 00:11:49.030
  • and it was so pretty, and I just loved it.
  • 00:11:49.040 --> 00:11:51.230
  • -Man 7: I do remember the present that my grandma gave
  • 00:11:51.240 --> 00:11:54.230
  • to me, even though it was not the most expensive one.
  • 00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:58.220
  • It was just because we saw, like, how much time
  • 00:11:58.230 --> 00:12:01.160
  • she put on it, and, um, I think just her face, like,
  • 00:12:01.170 --> 00:12:06.280
  • when she gives the presents to us, and she sees that, like,
  • 00:12:06.290 --> 00:12:09.090
  • this was meant for you, you know.
  • 00:12:09.100 --> 00:12:11.230
  • So that made it extra special.
  • 00:12:11.240 --> 00:12:14.080
  • -Woman 1: I was already almost a teenager, maybe,
  • 00:12:14.090 --> 00:12:17.030
  • and we had moved away from Puerto Rico.
  • 00:12:17.040 --> 00:12:18.270
  • It was kind of a poor Christmas, I guess you would say.
  • 00:12:18.280 --> 00:12:21.100
  • And, um, my parents didn't have much,
  • 00:12:21.110 --> 00:12:24.050
  • and they decided to-- what little we had,
  • 00:12:24.060 --> 00:12:26.230
  • we just decided to give it away to, like,
  • 00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:29.110
  • just some charity or something.
  • 00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:30.220
  • And it was just that lesson that Christmas was still fun,
  • 00:12:30.230 --> 00:12:33.280
  • even though we didn't have to have some fancy gadget.
  • 00:12:33.290 --> 00:12:36.200
  • That lesson has just kinda stayed with me;
  • 00:12:36.210 --> 00:12:38.160
  • it was a different kind of gift.
  • 00:12:38.170 --> 00:12:41.210
  • -Woman 5: Roller skates I got one year.
  • 00:12:41.220 --> 00:12:43.160
  • We, I grew up during the Depression,
  • 00:12:43.170 --> 00:12:45.110
  • and we were-- everybody was poor.
  • 00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:47.010
  • We didn't know we were poor, but everybody was poor.
  • 00:12:47.020 --> 00:12:50.040
  • And I think the year I got roller skates
  • 00:12:50.050 --> 00:12:52.000
  • I felt like I had gotten a million-dollar gift. [laughs]
  • 00:12:52.010 --> 00:12:56.280
  • That was one of them.
  • 00:12:56.290 --> 00:12:58.120
  • Later on, in 1955, I got my husband on Christmas day.
  • 00:12:58.130 --> 00:13:03.220
  • That's our anniversary,
  • 00:13:03.230 --> 00:13:05.190
  • and that was probably my biggest Christmas.
  • 00:13:05.200 --> 00:13:08.260
  • -John: If there was a gift that you could give somebody
  • 00:13:08.270 --> 00:13:12.060
  • at Christmas time, what would it be?
  • 00:13:12.070 --> 00:13:16.160
  • -Man 5: Uh, an opportunity for them to get better,
  • 00:13:16.170 --> 00:13:19.170
  • whatever that opportunity is,
  • 00:13:19.180 --> 00:13:21.110
  • and if it was within my power to give them that opportunity,
  • 00:13:21.120 --> 00:13:24.230
  • you know, I would give it to them as a gift--
  • 00:13:24.240 --> 00:13:26.050
  • be it a financial opportunity, be it a job break, you know,
  • 00:13:26.060 --> 00:13:29.180
  • but an opportunity--
  • 00:13:29.190 --> 00:13:31.130
  • just an opportunity for them to be better.
  • 00:13:31.140 --> 00:13:33.140
  • -Man 6: Uh, if there was any gift I could give anyone
  • 00:13:33.150 --> 00:13:37.150
  • in the world, um, I would have a hard time
  • 00:13:37.160 --> 00:13:41.260
  • not giving something super special to my parents,
  • 00:13:41.270 --> 00:13:45.090
  • just because, you know, they raised me,
  • 00:13:45.100 --> 00:13:47.010
  • and they've given me a whole lot over the years.
  • 00:13:47.020 --> 00:13:49.170
  • Um, and, uh, I'm now finally at a, at a place in my life
  • 00:13:49.180 --> 00:13:54.280
  • where I can give good gifts to my parents, so...
  • 00:13:54.290 --> 00:13:58.170
  • -Man 1: My parents have sacrificed a lot for us,
  • 00:13:58.180 --> 00:14:01.060
  • and, um, I'd like to give something back to my mother.
  • 00:14:01.070 --> 00:14:04.130
  • Uh, so, you know, pay off her mortgage
  • 00:14:04.140 --> 00:14:08.050
  • or something along that line-- just a way to say thank you.
  • 00:14:08.060 --> 00:14:12.240
  • -Woman 1: I'd probably try to reunite a family.
  • 00:14:12.250 --> 00:14:17.170
  • I've heard stories of people that just go through so much,
  • 00:14:17.180 --> 00:14:22.030
  • and they're away from family,
  • 00:14:22.040 --> 00:14:23.190
  • and it just means the world to them to be reunited.
  • 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:26.000
  • So if I could do that, that would probably be
  • 00:14:26.010 --> 00:14:27.190
  • the best gift I could give.
  • 00:14:27.200 --> 00:14:29.190
  • -Man 2: You know, as I get older,
  • 00:14:29.200 --> 00:14:31.090
  • um, I think it gets more real.
  • 00:14:31.100 --> 00:14:34.110
  • Somehow a gift of service-- maybe a mission trip together?
  • 00:14:34.120 --> 00:14:39.210
  • Um, something that you're just so glad you did it
  • 00:14:39.220 --> 00:14:45.160
  • would be the kind of gift I would want to give.
  • 00:14:45.170 --> 00:14:48.020
  • -Man 3: The best gift that I think I could probably give
  • 00:14:48.030 --> 00:14:50.100
  • to anybody, even if it's somebody that I didn't know,
  • 00:14:50.110 --> 00:14:52.280
  • would probably be to adopt a child.
  • 00:14:52.290 --> 00:14:56.140
  • I would think that would be a good gift for somebody,
  • 00:14:56.150 --> 00:14:59.090
  • to give them a home, a family that would love them.
  • 00:14:59.100 --> 00:15:02.210
  • -John: And what do you want for Christmas?
  • 00:15:02.220 --> 00:15:05.160
  • -Girl: Presents!
  • 00:15:05.170 --> 00:15:06.280
  • -Woman 1: A car would be really nice. [laughs]
  • 00:15:06.290 --> 00:15:09.110
  • As a college student, to have a car--
  • 00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:11.150
  • that would be really nice.
  • 00:15:11.160 --> 00:15:12.220
  • -Woman 2: I think a laptop, [laughs] a laptop for school.
  • 00:15:12.230 --> 00:15:16.040
  • -Woman 7: More scholarships.
  • 00:15:16.050 --> 00:15:19.010
  • -Man 1: Nothing. [laughs]
  • 00:15:19.020 --> 00:15:21.020
  • What makes a dad happy for Christmas is his children
  • 00:15:21.030 --> 00:15:24.090
  • to be healthy and content,
  • 00:15:24.100 --> 00:15:25.260
  • and so their smiling faces is, is all that I need.
  • 00:15:25.270 --> 00:15:31.170
  • -Woman 4: You know, I'm to the stage of life
  • 00:15:31.180 --> 00:15:33.050
  • where I'm getting rid of some stuff--
  • 00:15:33.060 --> 00:15:35.170
  • I won't need that anymore. [laughs]
  • 00:15:35.180 --> 00:15:37.210
  • Uh, just the fact that my family is there;
  • 00:15:37.220 --> 00:15:42.040
  • they all love the Lord, and,
  • 00:15:42.050 --> 00:15:44.050
  • and that's special, and that's what I want for Christmas.
  • 00:15:44.060 --> 00:15:48.180
  • -Man 4: I just wanna be at home, like, to be honest.
  • 00:15:48.190 --> 00:15:51.200
  • I'm the baby of the family, and so, uh,
  • 00:15:51.210 --> 00:15:54.280
  • being away from home for so long--
  • 00:15:54.290 --> 00:15:58.200
  • uh, it just makes me wanna be back with my family--
  • 00:15:58.210 --> 00:16:03.070
  • my parents, my sister.
  • 00:16:03.080 --> 00:16:05.010
  • -Man 2: Uh, more of my wife-- time together.
  • 00:16:05.020 --> 00:16:09.190
  • -Man 6: As a Christian, I think what I would most want
  • 00:16:09.200 --> 00:16:12.160
  • for Christmas is for Jesus to come again.
  • 00:16:12.170 --> 00:16:14.210
  • Um, I think any Christian should want that for Christmas.
  • 00:16:14.220 --> 00:16:19.030
  • But you know, barring that,
  • 00:16:19.040 --> 00:16:22.130
  • I would not mind having student loans paid off.
  • 00:16:22.140 --> 00:16:25.190
  • -Man 5: Just to spend time with family,
  • 00:16:25.200 --> 00:16:26.290
  • especially the aging old in my family,
  • 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:29.190
  • not knowing how long they've got left to go in life,
  • 00:16:29.200 --> 00:16:32.180
  • but just to be with them.
  • 00:16:32.190 --> 00:16:33.250
  • -Woman 5: There's nothing like your family getting together
  • 00:16:33.260 --> 00:16:35.240
  • for Christmas, and I would love to have them there,
  • 00:16:35.250 --> 00:16:38.170
  • and our grandchildren--all of them, just the whole family.
  • 00:16:38.180 --> 00:16:42.160
  • -Woman 6: Time with family-- uh, the more family the better.
  • 00:16:42.170 --> 00:16:45.220
  • And, um, I think just taking in all parts of the holiday,
  • 00:16:45.230 --> 00:16:51.060
  • um, everything that you can and, and making it
  • 00:16:51.070 --> 00:16:54.020
  • just a really special time-- more than just a day--
  • 00:16:54.030 --> 00:16:56.210
  • uh, the whole season,
  • 00:16:56.220 --> 00:16:57.290
  • and talking about what's really important, um, with your family.
  • 00:16:58.000 --> 00:17:03.010
  • I, I think that's the most important thing.

  • -Man 3: I don't think gifts would make my Christmas better.
  • 00:17:05.040 --> 00:17:08.260
  • I'm past that stage now.
  • 00:17:08.270 --> 00:17:11.010
  • I think the only thing that would make it better is
  • 00:17:11.020 --> 00:17:14.030
  • if I could be surrounded by friends and family,
  • 00:17:14.040 --> 00:17:17.000
  • and really celebrate Christ and the gifts that He's given to us.
  • 00:17:17.010 --> 00:17:21.090

  • -John Bradshaw: So what do you want for Christmas?
  • 00:18:05.140 --> 00:18:08.090
  • You know, Christmas is one of life's great seasons
  • 00:18:08.100 --> 00:18:10.290
  • of perspective.
  • 00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:12.250
  • You get an opportunity to ask yourself,
  • 00:18:12.260 --> 00:18:15.190
  • "What's really important?"
  • 00:18:15.200 --> 00:18:16.290
  • Because, of course, as we look around society,
  • 00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:19.080
  • the emphasis is on--what?
  • 00:18:19.090 --> 00:18:21.050
  • Gifts and getting and having and consuming.
  • 00:18:21.060 --> 00:18:24.260
  • And you and I both know that at the end of the day,
  • 00:18:24.270 --> 00:18:27.000
  • even though there are things that we want,
  • 00:18:27.010 --> 00:18:29.280
  • and there are things we want to eat,
  • 00:18:29.290 --> 00:18:31.080
  • and there are things we want to consume;
  • 00:18:31.090 --> 00:18:32.190
  • there are things we want to have;
  • 00:18:32.200 --> 00:18:34.210
  • the having and getting and consuming
  • 00:18:34.220 --> 00:18:36.030
  • and eating and drinking and all of that--
  • 00:18:36.040 --> 00:18:38.110
  • it's not what Christmas is really all about.
  • 00:18:38.120 --> 00:18:41.060
  • As I spoke with multiple people about Christmas,
  • 00:18:41.070 --> 00:18:43.110
  • you know what came through?
  • 00:18:43.120 --> 00:18:44.210
  • They said, "What's important to me? Grandma."
  • 00:18:44.220 --> 00:18:47.050
  • So if you're a grandma, thank you.
  • 00:18:47.060 --> 00:18:50.050
  • It seems like you make Christmas really special.
  • 00:18:50.060 --> 00:18:53.260
  • Keep doing what you're doing.
  • 00:18:53.270 --> 00:18:55.160
  • Family!
  • 00:18:55.170 --> 00:18:56.210
  • There's nothing like getting together with family.
  • 00:18:56.220 --> 00:18:59.160
  • I live thousands of miles from my--
  • 00:18:59.170 --> 00:19:02.280
  • not my immediate family-- but my extended family,
  • 00:19:02.290 --> 00:19:06.000
  • and I see them very infrequently.
  • 00:19:06.010 --> 00:19:09.000
  • So when people talk about the joy of getting together
  • 00:19:09.010 --> 00:19:11.020
  • with family at Christmas, I say,
  • 00:19:11.030 --> 00:19:12.230
  • "Aw, yeah, I'd love to be with my family."
  • 00:19:12.240 --> 00:19:16.130
  • People say, "The kids. It's the kids that's important."
  • 00:19:16.140 --> 00:19:20.110
  • Now, you ask a kid; the kid will say,
  • 00:19:20.120 --> 00:19:21.210
  • "Presents! I want Legos! I wanna eat."
  • 00:19:21.220 --> 00:19:24.260
  • That child will get old enough one day to say
  • 00:19:24.270 --> 00:19:26.210
  • what's most important isn't the Legos and the gifts
  • 00:19:26.220 --> 00:19:30.110
  • and the food, but it's, it's the kids--it's family.
  • 00:19:30.120 --> 00:19:35.240
  • You want enough time-- family time, togetherness.
  • 00:19:35.250 --> 00:19:40.030
  • What do you want for Christmas?
  • 00:19:40.040 --> 00:19:43.220
  • Now, it may be that what I've done is I've painted
  • 00:19:43.230 --> 00:19:46.280
  • a Hallmark card.
  • 00:19:46.290 --> 00:19:49.080
  • Maybe we've-- we're guilty sometimes
  • 00:19:49.090 --> 00:19:51.140
  • of painting an idyllic Christmas scene
  • 00:19:51.150 --> 00:19:53.160
  • because what we know is that for many people,
  • 00:19:53.170 --> 00:19:56.280
  • this won't be a happy Christmas.
  • 00:19:56.290 --> 00:19:59.220
  • Maybe there's no work, no job, no money.
  • 00:19:59.230 --> 00:20:01.190
  • Maybe you're just broke.
  • 00:20:01.200 --> 00:20:04.080
  • Happy Christmas.
  • 00:20:04.090 --> 00:20:05.240
  • Maybe you're facing Christmas alone.
  • 00:20:05.250 --> 00:20:08.080
  • There's no one to turn to, no one to hug,
  • 00:20:08.090 --> 00:20:10.040
  • no one to love, no one to lean on,
  • 00:20:10.050 --> 00:20:12.030
  • no one to celebrate with, maybe.
  • 00:20:12.040 --> 00:20:14.110
  • There are many people in that very situation right now.
  • 00:20:14.120 --> 00:20:18.010
  • Maybe bills are piling up.
  • 00:20:18.020 --> 00:20:20.190
  • Maybe you've suffered terrible losses.
  • 00:20:20.200 --> 00:20:23.090
  • If not you, then certainly somebody that you know.
  • 00:20:23.100 --> 00:20:28.110
  • If you lost your home in a fire,
  • 00:20:28.120 --> 00:20:31.280
  • then this Christmas is gonna be very different
  • 00:20:31.290 --> 00:20:34.050
  • from any Christmas that you've ever experienced before.
  • 00:20:34.060 --> 00:20:39.070
  • If someone has just told you they want a divorce,
  • 00:20:39.080 --> 00:20:43.030
  • if your kids aren't going to be home for Christmas,
  • 00:20:43.040 --> 00:20:47.070
  • Christmas can be a really challenging time.
  • 00:20:47.080 --> 00:20:53.030
  • So what do we really want for Christmas?
  • 00:20:53.040 --> 00:20:55.190
  • Well, we want grandma and cookies and gifts,
  • 00:20:55.200 --> 00:20:57.230
  • and we want a tree and a fireplace,
  • 00:20:57.240 --> 00:20:59.110
  • and we want the family to come together.
  • 00:20:59.120 --> 00:21:02.280
  • Which leads me to wonder something.
  • 00:21:02.290 --> 00:21:04.090
  • Can I share with you something that I'm wondering?
  • 00:21:04.100 --> 00:21:07.250
  • I wonder if what we really want is that which we don't yet have,
  • 00:21:07.260 --> 00:21:13.110
  • and that what we cannot yet have.
  • 00:21:13.120 --> 00:21:16.270
  • Maybe what we really want for Christmas,
  • 00:21:16.280 --> 00:21:21.040
  • maybe what we really want for Christmas...is heaven.
  • 00:21:21.050 --> 00:21:26.030
  • Because it's only then that family won't be separated.
  • 00:21:26.040 --> 00:21:30.190
  • It's only then that there won't be any hardship.
  • 00:21:30.200 --> 00:21:35.070
  • It's only when we get to heaven that there won't be
  • 00:21:35.080 --> 00:21:38.050
  • any mourning.
  • 00:21:38.060 --> 00:21:39.200
  • It's only when we get to heaven
  • 00:21:39.210 --> 00:21:41.150
  • there won't be any grief and death,
  • 00:21:41.160 --> 00:21:44.080
  • won't be any lack of anything at all.
  • 00:21:44.090 --> 00:21:48.000
  • Jesus came into this world,
  • 00:21:48.010 --> 00:21:49.190
  • born as a baby 2.000 years ago in the little town of Bethlehem.
  • 00:21:49.200 --> 00:21:55.210
  • And why did He come into this world?
  • 00:21:55.220 --> 00:21:58.060
  • Now, this is what you don't see in manger scenes;
  • 00:21:58.070 --> 00:22:01.010
  • it's what you'll never see written in slogans on signs
  • 00:22:01.020 --> 00:22:04.170
  • along Main Street.
  • 00:22:04.180 --> 00:22:06.220
  • According to the Bible, Matthew 1:21 says
  • 00:22:06.230 --> 00:22:10.020
  • that Jesus came to this world to save His people from their sins.
  • 00:22:10.030 --> 00:22:16.170
  • Jesus was a child who was born to die.
  • 00:22:16.180 --> 00:22:20.270
  • He was born owing to the sins of the world.
  • 00:22:20.280 --> 00:22:24.280
  • Someone had to save the wandering human family--
  • 00:22:24.290 --> 00:22:28.090
  • and have we ever wandered!
  • 00:22:28.100 --> 00:22:30.020
  • While you enjoy--I'm hoping-- the happy side of Christmas,
  • 00:22:30.030 --> 00:22:32.220
  • police or other first responders will see all too graphically
  • 00:22:32.230 --> 00:22:36.110
  • that we are still in the midst of a troubled world
  • 00:22:36.120 --> 00:22:39.120
  • mired in sin.
  • 00:22:39.130 --> 00:22:41.130
  • There are still wars being fought.
  • 00:22:41.140 --> 00:22:43.160
  • We salute our troops and thank them for their commitment
  • 00:22:43.170 --> 00:22:47.110
  • to this Christmas time.
  • 00:22:47.120 --> 00:22:49.010
  • There's still hate, and there's still injustice.
  • 00:22:49.020 --> 00:22:51.030
  • There is still racism. There is still death.
  • 00:22:51.040 --> 00:22:55.240
  • I think perhaps what we want for Christmas
  • 00:22:55.250 --> 00:22:57.140
  • is to be out of this world and into the world to come.
  • 00:22:57.150 --> 00:23:02.060
  • I think that as we remember the very first advent of Jesus,
  • 00:23:02.070 --> 00:23:05.020
  • what we really want, and what we really need, is His return.
  • 00:23:05.030 --> 00:23:12.010
  • Revelation 21:4--
  • 00:23:12.020 --> 00:23:14.020
  • "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes;
  • 00:23:14.030 --> 00:23:17.280
  • and there shall be no more death,
  • 00:23:17.290 --> 00:23:20.080
  • neither sorrow, nor crying,
  • 00:23:20.090 --> 00:23:23.110
  • neither shall there be any more pain:
  • 00:23:23.120 --> 00:23:26.090
  • for the former things are passed away."
  • 00:23:26.100 --> 00:23:29.120
  • The shepherds who watched their flocks by night
  • 00:23:30.170 --> 00:23:32.170
  • heard angels sing.
  • 00:23:32.180 --> 00:23:34.090
  • Luke 2:20 says,
  • 00:23:34.100 --> 00:23:36.010
  • "And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God
  • 00:23:36.020 --> 00:23:39.040
  • for all the things that they had heard and seen."
  • 00:23:39.050 --> 00:23:42.140
  • But they hadn't seen the best that there was to see.
  • 00:23:42.150 --> 00:23:46.110
  • Matthew 2:11 says,
  • 00:23:46.120 --> 00:23:48.220
  • "And when they had come into the house,
  • 00:23:48.230 --> 00:23:51.100
  • they saw the young Child with Mary His mother,
  • 00:23:51.110 --> 00:23:54.170
  • and fell down and worshiped Him.
  • 00:23:54.180 --> 00:23:56.260
  • And when they had opened their treasures,
  • 00:23:56.270 --> 00:23:58.100
  • they presented unto Him gifts:
  • 00:23:58.110 --> 00:24:01.040
  • gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."
  • 00:24:01.050 --> 00:24:05.010
  • Imagine!
  • 00:24:05.020 --> 00:24:06.200
  • But they hadn't seen the best there was to see.
  • 00:24:06.210 --> 00:24:10.140
  • In the temple, Simeon took Jesus up into his arms,
  • 00:24:10.150 --> 00:24:13.150
  • and he blessed God.
  • 00:24:13.160 --> 00:24:15.130
  • But even Simeon hadn't seen the best that there was to see.
  • 00:24:15.140 --> 00:24:19.080
  • First Thessalonians 4:16-17 say,
  • 00:24:19.090 --> 00:24:23.140
  • "For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven
  • 00:24:23.150 --> 00:24:26.200
  • with a shout, with the voice of the archangel,
  • 00:24:26.210 --> 00:24:30.030
  • and with the trump of God:
  • 00:24:30.040 --> 00:24:32.000
  • and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
  • 00:24:32.010 --> 00:24:35.040
  • then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up
  • 00:24:35.050 --> 00:24:37.170
  • together with them in the clouds,
  • 00:24:37.180 --> 00:24:38.270
  • to meet the Lord in the air:
  • 00:24:38.280 --> 00:24:40.280
  • and so shall we ever be with the Lord."
  • 00:24:40.290 --> 00:24:45.010
  • That's the best there is to see:
  • 00:24:45.020 --> 00:24:47.210
  • the return of Jesus, the end of sin,
  • 00:24:47.220 --> 00:24:50.280
  • an eternity of peace.
  • 00:24:50.290 --> 00:24:52.210
  • And we get to see it.
  • 00:24:52.220 --> 00:24:54.230
  • By asking Jesus into your heart,
  • 00:24:54.240 --> 00:24:56.160
  • you have the assurance of eternal life.
  • 00:24:56.170 --> 00:24:59.050
  • Surrendering to God, Jesus becomes your Lord,
  • 00:24:59.060 --> 00:25:04.070
  • your Savior, and your eternal hope.
  • 00:25:04.080 --> 00:25:08.210
  • What do you want for Christmas?
  • 00:25:08.220 --> 00:25:11.150
  • I know what I want.
  • 00:25:11.160 --> 00:25:13.090
  • As John, who wrote Revelation, said,
  • 00:25:13.100 --> 00:25:16.020
  • "Even so, come, Lord Jesus."

  • 00:25:51.170 --> 00:25:53.120
  • Our Father in heaven, the true essence of the Christmas story
  • 00:25:53.130 --> 00:25:57.060
  • reveals to us that there is a God with a great heart of love,
  • 00:25:57.070 --> 00:26:02.070
  • who wants more than anything that we, His children,
  • 00:26:02.080 --> 00:26:04.170
  • be saved and be with Him forever.
  • 00:26:04.180 --> 00:26:06.290
  • Friends, as I pray,
  • 00:26:07.000 --> 00:26:08.000
  • I'm wondering if God is speaking to your heart.
  • 00:26:08.010 --> 00:26:10.040
  • If He is, and I think He is,
  • 00:26:10.050 --> 00:26:12.150
  • would you surrender your heart to Him now?
  • 00:26:12.160 --> 00:26:15.040
  • "Lord, I'm tired of going my way," you might say.
  • 00:26:15.050 --> 00:26:18.010
  • "I'm tired of doing my thing.
  • 00:26:18.020 --> 00:26:20.010
  • I do want a new heart and a new life."
  • 00:26:20.020 --> 00:26:23.100
  • And so we pray, Father, take our hearts;
  • 00:26:23.110 --> 00:26:26.010
  • make them Yours.
  • 00:26:26.020 --> 00:26:27.120
  • And as You do, we believe that in Jesus,
  • 00:26:27.130 --> 00:26:30.120
  • whom You gave 2.000 years ago,
  • 00:26:30.130 --> 00:26:32.280
  • we have the gift of eternal life.
  • 00:26:32.290 --> 00:26:35.250
  • We thank You, and we pray in Jesus' name.
  • 00:26:35.260 --> 00:26:40.080
  • Amen.
  • 00:26:40.090 --> 00:26:41.260
  • Thank you so much for joining me.
  • 00:26:41.270 --> 00:26:43.260
  • I'm looking forward to seeing you again next time.
  • 00:26:43.270 --> 00:26:46.060
  • Until then, remember:
  • 00:26:46.070 --> 00:26:48.020
  • "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone,
  • 00:26:48.030 --> 00:26:52.290
  • but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"
  • 00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:57.150
  • [Theme music]
  • 00:26:57.160 --> 00:27:07.190
  • [Theme music]
  • 00:27:07.190 --> 00:27:17.190
