  • To produce this dramatic change in their brain chemistry
  • 00:03:45.948 --> 00:03:49.419
  • And their change in their thought pattern,
  • 00:03:49.419 --> 00:03:51.754
  • But it's well worth the effort.
  • 00:03:51.754 --> 00:03:53.356
  • >>john: the reason i think it's important we speak about this
  • 00:03:53.356 --> 00:03:55.525
  • From a, a faith-based point of view is that the bible speaks
  • 00:03:55.525 --> 00:04:00.496
  • Again and again and again about health,
  • 00:04:00.496 --> 00:04:02.298
  • And mental health is supremely important.
  • 00:04:02.298 --> 00:04:05.568
  • Look, just to digress for a brief moment,
  • 00:04:05.568 --> 00:04:07.537
  • I think it's important we talk about this
  • 00:04:07.537 --> 00:04:08.971
  • Because...too few people speak about mental health.
  • 00:04:08.971 --> 00:04:12.642
  • Like it or not, there's still a stigma about mental health
  • 00:04:12.642 --> 00:04:15.011

  • Is happy to tell his friend he had surgery,
  • 00:04:17.380 --> 00:04:19.182
  • But somebody with a mental health issue will keep it
  • 00:04:19.182 --> 00:04:21.784
  • To himself or herself,
  • 00:04:21.784 --> 00:04:23.619
  • Maybe to their detriment or even their demise.
  • 00:04:23.619 --> 00:04:26.889
  • >>dr. nedley: exactly.
  • 00:04:26.889 --> 00:04:28.091
  • >>john: and, and another reason we want to talk about this
  • 00:04:28.091 --> 00:04:30.326
  • Is because looking at it from a biblical point of view,
  • 00:04:30.326 --> 00:04:32.962
  • We see that ultimately, ultimately this thing
  • 00:04:32.962 --> 00:04:36.666
  • Between good and evil is a battle for the mind.
  • 00:04:36.666 --> 00:04:39.268
  • >>dr. nedley: mm-hmm.
  • 00:04:39.268 --> 00:04:40.136
  • >>john: so, in one place the bible says,
  • 00:04:40.136 --> 00:04:41.404
  • "we have the mind of christ." we want that as far as possible.
  • 00:04:41.404 --> 00:04:44.006
  • >>dr. nedley: mm-hmm. >>john: okay.
  • 00:04:44.006 --> 00:04:45.341
  • Let's define some things here. what's depression?
  • 00:04:45.341 --> 00:04:48.111
  • I know you talk about that ad infinitum,
  • 00:04:48.111 --> 00:04:49.712
  • But briefly, what's depression?
  • 00:04:49.712 --> 00:04:51.280
  • And help me understand the difference between severe
  • 00:04:51.280 --> 00:04:56.252
  • And, and, and extreme and these various forms.
  • 00:04:56.252 --> 00:04:59.922
  • >>dr. nedley: yes. so, a major depression is actually
  • 00:04:59.922 --> 00:05:02.859
  • A constellation of symptoms. and i use the psychiatric bible;
  • 00:05:02.859 --> 00:05:07.363
  • The diagnostic statistical manual gives us
  • 00:05:07.363 --> 00:05:10.333
  • Nine hallmark symptoms of depression.
  • 00:05:10.333 --> 00:05:12.468
  • You don't have to have all nine of them,
  • 00:05:12.468 --> 00:05:14.737
  • But you have to have five of those nine.
  • 00:05:14.737 --> 00:05:17.573
  • But two of the classic are deep sadness--
  • 00:05:17.573 --> 00:05:20.510
  • Which you may not even have and still have depression--
  • 00:05:20.510 --> 00:05:23.079
  • And apathy. this is where you wake up in the morning
  • 00:05:23.079 --> 00:05:26.115
  • And you're not excited about the day.
  • 00:05:26.115 --> 00:05:28.317
  • You get up out of duty
  • 00:05:28.317 --> 00:05:30.353
  • But not because you're interested in the day.
  • 00:05:30.353 --> 00:05:33.356
  • And that will happen not just once in a while,
  • 00:05:33.356 --> 00:05:35.691
  • But for a depressed person it'll be there for, you know,
  • 00:05:35.691 --> 00:05:38.327
  • At least two weeks.
  • 00:05:38.327 --> 00:05:40.029
  • In addition to that, there'll be energy issues.
  • 00:05:40.029 --> 00:05:42.698
  • There'll be sleep issues, either wanting to sleep
  • 00:05:42.698 --> 00:05:45.067
  • All the time or not being able to sleep,
  • 00:05:45.067 --> 00:05:47.703
  • And waking up too early and not being able to go back to sleep.
  • 00:05:47.703 --> 00:05:51.407
  • Then there's more irritability than there used to be.
  • 00:05:51.407 --> 00:05:54.510
  • And then focus and concentration issues
  • 00:05:54.510 --> 00:05:57.613
  • Can also be a major problem, where you're reading something
  • 00:05:57.613 --> 00:06:00.883
  • That's interesting to you, you get to the bottom of the page,
  • 00:06:00.883 --> 00:06:03.820
  • And you forget what was at the top of the page.
  • 00:06:03.820 --> 00:06:06.088
  • And you have to go back and read it again,
  • 00:06:06.088 --> 00:06:07.757
  • And it might even happen again.
  • 00:06:07.757 --> 00:06:09.358
  • And that can be a sign of both anxiety and depression.

  • >>john: and society has known for decades

  • 00:06:41.491 --> 00:06:43.493
  • What's happened in the last 10 years
  • 00:06:43.493 --> 00:06:45.194
  • In terms of depression and anxiety?
  • 00:06:45.194 --> 00:06:47.730
  • >>dr. nedley: the rates have gone up astronomically
  • 00:06:47.730 --> 00:06:50.333
  • In the last 10 years.
  • 00:06:50.333 --> 00:06:51.834
  • And, you know, what has also shifted is depression used to be
  • 00:06:51.834 --> 00:06:56.239
  • The older you get, the more likely you're going to get it.
  • 00:06:56.239 --> 00:06:59.575
  • And now we're seeing this big peak among young people,
  • 00:06:59.575 --> 00:07:03.246
  • Adolescents, uh, teenagers, even pre-teenagers,
  • 00:07:03.246 --> 00:07:07.183
  • And particularly those in their 20s--
  • 00:07:07.183 --> 00:07:10.586
  • Off the charts in regards to depression and anxiety levels.
  • 00:07:10.586 --> 00:07:14.690
  • And that's changed over the last 10 years.
  • 00:07:14.690 --> 00:07:16.592
  • >>john: and why is that?
  • 00:07:16.592 --> 00:07:17.994
  • >>dr. nedley: the reason is actually the smartphone usage.
  • 00:07:17.994 --> 00:07:22.798
  • Uh, it wasn't till about 10 or 11 years ago
  • 00:07:22.798 --> 00:07:26.969
  • That about half of americans owned a smartphone.
  • 00:07:26.969 --> 00:07:30.106
  • And now that smartphone is actually able to distract them
  • 00:07:30.106 --> 00:07:35.211
  • Very easily. and when we are driven to distraction,
  • 00:07:35.211 --> 00:07:40.449
  • It actually decreases an area of our frontal lobe
  • 00:07:40.449 --> 00:07:43.553
  • That is precisely the area that's needed
  • 00:07:43.553 --> 00:07:46.155
  • For managing distressing emotions.
  • 00:07:46.155 --> 00:07:49.292
  • And so, it's not the smartphone itself, per se,
  • 00:07:49.292 --> 00:07:53.129
  • But the normal use of the smartphone
  • 00:07:53.129 --> 00:07:55.765
  • Where we're allowing ourself to get distracted by snapchats,
  • 00:07:55.765 --> 00:07:59.669
  • Texts, push notifications, and even when we get on there
  • 00:07:59.669 --> 00:08:04.674
  • To do something, we forget why we got on there to do something,
  • 00:08:04.674 --> 00:08:08.911
  • And we immediately see a text or an email or things like that,
  • 00:08:08.911 --> 00:08:13.015
  • And that division of attention actually causes
  • 00:08:13.015 --> 00:08:16.285
  • Biochemical, uh, consequences in the brain,
  • 00:08:16.285 --> 00:08:20.623
  • And those biochemical consequences increase
  • 00:08:20.623 --> 00:08:24.360
  • The rates of depression and anxiety.
  • 00:08:24.360 --> 00:08:26.028
