  • That jesus christ died for our sins, just as he said.
  • 00:06:57.395 --> 00:07:02.601
  • He died for our sins, just as he said.
  • 00:07:03.435 --> 00:07:05.570
  • In matthew 16:21, matthew says,
  • 00:07:05.570 --> 00:07:07.806
  • "from that time on, jesus began to show his disciples
  • 00:07:07.806 --> 00:07:11.243

  • That's the whole reason i have come, to die."
  • 00:07:26.424 --> 00:07:29.160

  • And give his life as a ransom for you and me?
  • 00:07:47.012 --> 00:07:51.349

  • Our sins have become a dividing wall between god and us.
  • 00:08:34.259 --> 00:08:39.030
  • But the bible says there is nothing we can do to remove
  • 00:08:39.030 --> 00:08:42.867

  • 00:08:42.867 --> 00:08:45.770
  • You know the old testament jews,
  • 00:08:45.770 --> 00:08:48.039

  • Every time they went into the temple.
  • 00:08:59.050 --> 00:09:01.653
  • Remember, in the temple structure,
  • 00:09:01.653 --> 00:09:03.622
  • It was crafted in such a way to remind people
  • 00:09:03.622 --> 00:09:07.659
  • Of their separation from god.
  • 00:09:07.659 --> 00:09:09.694
  • But between the holy place
  • 00:09:09.694 --> 00:09:11.529
  • And the most holy place, the holy of holies,
  • 00:09:11.529 --> 00:09:14.232
  • There was a huge veil that separated the holy of holies
  • 00:09:14.232 --> 00:09:18.336
  • From the rest of the temple.
  • 00:09:18.336 --> 00:09:19.971
  • But once a year, one priest, the high priest,
  • 00:09:19.971 --> 00:09:24.275
  • Was allowed to go into the holy of holies.
  • 00:09:24.275 --> 00:09:27.312
  • After he had made a sacrifice for his own sins,
  • 00:09:27.312 --> 00:09:30.215
  • He would take the blood of an innocent animal
  • 00:09:30.215 --> 00:09:32.584
  • And he would sprinkle it on that lid of the ark,
  • 00:09:32.584 --> 00:09:35.286
  • The mercy seat.
  • 00:09:35.286 --> 00:09:36.788
  • And the picture was, when god looked down,
  • 00:09:36.788 --> 00:09:39.090
  • He no longer saw the law that had been broken by his people,
  • 00:09:39.090 --> 00:09:42.494
  • But the blood of that innocent lamb
  • 00:09:42.494 --> 00:09:44.729
  • Covered the sins of the people.
  • 00:09:44.729 --> 00:09:47.499
  • Now, only one person could make that sacrifice,
  • 00:09:47.499 --> 00:09:50.602
  • The high priest.
  • 00:09:50.602 --> 00:09:52.203
  • But to do so, he had to first of all atone for his own sins.
  • 00:09:52.203 --> 00:09:55.707
  • And not only that, he had to go in
  • 00:09:55.707 --> 00:09:58.643
  • Year after year after year with the blood of animals.
  • 00:09:58.643 --> 00:10:03.014
  • But all of that was a picture
  • 00:10:03.014 --> 00:10:04.883
  • Of what our high priest, jesus christ,
  • 00:10:04.883 --> 00:10:07.385
  • Would do on the cross for us.
  • 00:10:07.385 --> 00:10:09.220
  • Hebrews 9, verses 11 and 12 tells us this,
  • 00:10:09.220 --> 00:10:12.424
  • "but when christ appeared as a high priest
  • 00:10:12.424 --> 00:10:15.393
  • Of the good things to come,
  • 00:10:15.393 --> 00:10:17.128
  • He entered through a greater and more perfect tabernacle,
  • 00:10:17.128 --> 00:10:21.032
  • Not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation,
  • 00:10:21.032 --> 00:10:24.469
  • And not through the blood of goats and calves,
  • 00:10:24.469 --> 00:10:26.938
  • But through his own blood
  • 00:10:26.938 --> 00:10:28.940
  • He entered the holy place once for all,
  • 00:10:28.940 --> 00:10:31.543
  • Having obtained eternal redemption."
  • 00:10:31.543 --> 00:10:35.580
  • Jesus christ never had to atone for his own sins.
  • 00:10:35.580 --> 00:10:38.216
  • He had no sins.
  • 00:10:38.216 --> 00:10:39.484
  • He went into not a manmade temple,
  • 00:10:39.484 --> 00:10:41.820
  • But into the true presence of god.
  • 00:10:41.820 --> 00:10:43.888
  • And he came not with the blood of animals,
  • 00:10:43.888 --> 00:10:45.790
  • But with his own blood.
  • 00:10:45.790 --> 00:10:47.058
  • And he made the sacrifice once, forever,
  • 00:10:47.058 --> 00:10:50.128
  • Having obtained eternal forgiveness for you and me.
  • 00:10:50.128 --> 00:10:52.897
  • Isn't that great?
  • 00:10:52.897 --> 00:10:54.199
  • That is what our savior has done for us.
  • 00:10:54.199 --> 00:10:57.135
  • (congregation applauding)
  • 00:10:57.135 --> 00:10:58.303
  • Now, get this,
  • 00:10:58.303 --> 00:10:59.904
  • What happened the moment christ died on the cross.
  • 00:10:59.904 --> 00:11:02.774
  • We find this word in matthew 27:51.
  • 00:11:02.774 --> 00:11:06.077
  • "and behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two
  • 00:11:06.077 --> 00:11:11.349
  • From top to bottom,
  • 00:11:11.816 --> 00:11:13.451
  • And the earth shook and the rocks were split."
  • 00:11:13.451 --> 00:11:16.721
  • There was no more sacrifice to be made.
  • 00:11:16.721 --> 00:11:19.691
  • Everyone had the opportunity
  • 00:11:19.691 --> 00:11:21.593
  • To come before the presence of god.
  • 00:11:21.593 --> 00:11:24.829
  • That's what that torn in two curtain represents.
  • 00:11:24.829 --> 00:11:28.833
  • But now get this.
  • 00:11:28.833 --> 00:11:30.001
  • This is so important to understand.
  • 00:11:30.001 --> 00:11:31.970
  • Just because that curtain, that wall of separation
  • 00:11:31.970 --> 00:11:34.639
  • Has been removed
  • 00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:36.007
  • Doesn't mean anybody can come into god's presence.
  • 00:11:36.007 --> 00:11:39.611
  • God hasn't changed.
  • 00:11:39.611 --> 00:11:41.546
  • God is still holy.
  • 00:11:41.546 --> 00:11:43.114
  • The bible says his eyes are too pure to look upon evil.
  • 00:11:43.114 --> 00:11:45.917
  • None of us is qualified to come into god's presence.
  • 00:11:45.917 --> 00:11:49.487
  • We need somebody's authority
  • 00:11:49.487 --> 00:11:51.656
  • To come into the presence of god.
  • 00:11:51.656 --> 00:11:53.792
  • We don't need a human priest, we don't need a human pastor,
  • 00:11:53.792 --> 00:11:57.362
  • We need jesus christ.
  • 00:11:57.362 --> 00:11:58.997
  • He is our perfect priest.
  • 00:11:58.997 --> 00:12:00.665
  • And on his authority, on the basis of the sacrifice
  • 00:12:00.665 --> 00:12:03.768
  • He made for us,
  • 00:12:03.768 --> 00:12:05.804
  • We can have access to the king, god the father.
  • 00:12:05.804 --> 00:12:09.307
  • Ephesians 2:18 says it this way, "for through jesus,
  • 00:12:09.307 --> 00:12:13.011
  • We both have our access in one spirit to the father."
  • 00:12:13.011 --> 00:12:17.081
  • That word access is a word that refers to in greek
  • 00:12:17.081 --> 00:12:20.652
  • A court official who introduces people to the king.
  • 00:12:21.686 --> 00:12:26.858
  • No subject could come to the king's presence on his own.
  • 00:12:27.992 --> 00:12:29.594
  • He needed a court official who had the authority
  • 00:12:29.594 --> 00:12:32.697
  • To usher him into the presence of the king.
  • 00:12:32.697 --> 00:12:36.301
  • Not one of us is qualified to go to god on our own.
  • 00:12:36.301 --> 00:12:40.104
  • We have to know somebody, and that somebody is jesus christ.
  • 00:12:40.104 --> 00:12:44.375
  • Through him, we have access to the father
  • 00:12:44.375 --> 00:12:48.079
  • Because of the sacrifice he made for us.
  • 00:12:48.079 --> 00:12:51.049
  • When he said, "it is finished,"
  • 00:12:51.049 --> 00:12:52.550
  • All of our debt has been canceled,
  • 00:12:52.550 --> 00:12:54.652
  • We are welcomed into his presence.
  • 00:12:54.652 --> 00:12:56.654
  • You say, "well, how do you know god accepted
  • 00:12:56.654 --> 00:12:58.389
  • His payment for my sin?"
  • 00:12:58.389 --> 00:12:59.824
  • That's what the resurrection proves.
  • 00:12:59.824 --> 00:13:01.459
  • Romans 1:4 said that jesus,
  • 00:13:01.459 --> 00:13:03.294
  • "was declared to be the son of god
  • 00:13:03.294 --> 00:13:05.330
  • With power by his resurrection from the dead."
  • 00:13:05.330 --> 00:13:08.700
  • If jesus had remained in that tomb,
  • 00:13:08.700 --> 00:13:10.602
  • You know what it would've meant?
  • 00:13:10.602 --> 00:13:12.103
  • He didn't die for our sins, he died for his own sins.
  • 00:13:12.103 --> 00:13:15.206
  • But the fact that god raised him up proved
  • 00:13:15.206 --> 00:13:18.176
  • That his gift was acceptable in the presence of god.
  • 00:13:18.176 --> 00:13:21.813
  • The empty tomb, first of all,
  • 00:13:21.813 --> 00:13:23.281
  • Proves that jesus died for our sins.
  • 00:13:23.281 --> 00:13:25.783
  • Secondly, the empty tomb proves
  • 00:13:25.783 --> 00:13:28.419
  • That christ has conquered death.
  • 00:13:28.419 --> 00:13:31.122
  • The empty tomb proves that christ has conquered death.
  • 00:13:31.122 --> 00:13:34.392
  • Remember what he said in john 2?
  • 00:13:35.026 --> 00:13:36.461
  • "the jews therefore answered and said to him,
  • 00:13:36.461 --> 00:13:38.897
  • 'what sign do you show us,
  • 00:13:38.897 --> 00:13:40.665
  • Seeing that you do these things?'
  • 00:13:40.665 --> 00:13:42.300
  • And jesus answered and said to them, 'destroy this temple
  • 00:13:42.300 --> 00:13:45.937
  • And in three days, i will raise it up.'
  • 00:13:45.937 --> 00:13:49.040
  • The jews therefore said, 'it took 46 years
  • 00:13:49.040 --> 00:13:51.743
  • To build this temple
  • 00:13:51.743 --> 00:13:53.144
  • And you're going to raise it up in three days?'
  • 00:13:53.144 --> 00:13:55.647
  • But jesus was speaking of the temple of his body.
  • 00:13:55.647 --> 00:13:59.050
  • When therefore he was raised from the dead,
  • 00:13:59.050 --> 00:14:01.386
  • His disciples remembered that he said this
  • 00:14:01.386 --> 00:14:04.822
  • And they believed the scripture and the word
  • 00:14:04.822 --> 00:14:06.991
  • Which jesus had spoken."
  • 00:14:06.991 --> 00:14:09.527
  • You know, it's interesting to me that jesus' followers
  • 00:14:09.527 --> 00:14:12.997
  • Had forgotten his prophecy of the resurrection,
  • 00:14:12.997 --> 00:14:15.833
  • Or they dismissed it.
  • 00:14:15.833 --> 00:14:17.235
  • But even though they had forgotten what jesus prophesied,
  • 00:14:17.235 --> 00:14:20.305
  • His enemies remembered very well
  • 00:14:20.305 --> 00:14:22.707
  • What he predicted about himself.
  • 00:14:22.707 --> 00:14:25.109
  • Remember what happened on saturday
  • 00:14:25.109 --> 00:14:26.744
  • After the crucifixion and burial on friday?
  • 00:14:26.744 --> 00:14:29.314
  • Matthew 27, verses 62 to 66, look at this.
  • 00:14:29.314 --> 00:14:33.084
  • "now on the next day,"
  • 00:14:33.084 --> 00:14:34.385
  • That is on saturday after the crucifixion,
  • 00:14:34.385 --> 00:14:36.888
  • "which is the one after the preparation,
  • 00:14:36.888 --> 00:14:38.856
  • The chief priest and the pharisees gathered together
  • 00:14:38.856 --> 00:14:41.626
  • With pilate.
  • 00:14:41.626 --> 00:14:42.660
  • And they said, 'sir, we remember
  • 00:14:42.660 --> 00:14:44.696
  • That when he was still alive, this deceiver said,
  • 00:14:44.696 --> 00:14:47.966
  • 'after three days, i'm going to rise again.'
  • 00:14:47.966 --> 00:14:51.336
  • Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure
  • 00:14:51.336 --> 00:14:54.472
  • Until the third day,
  • 00:14:54.472 --> 00:14:55.707
  • Lest the disciples come and steal him away
  • 00:14:55.707 --> 00:14:58.376
  • And say to the people, 'he has risen from the dead,'
  • 00:14:58.376 --> 00:15:02.046
  • And that the last deception will be worse than the first.'
  • 00:15:02.046 --> 00:15:05.783
  • So pilate said to them, 'you have a guard.
  • 00:15:05.783 --> 00:15:08.252
  • Go and make the grave as secure as you can.'
  • 00:15:08.252 --> 00:15:11.456
  • And they went and they made the grave secure,
  • 00:15:11.456 --> 00:15:14.392
  • And along with the guard, they set a seal on the stone."
  • 00:15:14.392 --> 00:15:19.731
  • You see, these jewish leaders were scared to death
  • 00:15:20.765 --> 00:15:22.066
  • That the disciples would steal the body of jesus
  • 00:15:22.066 --> 00:15:25.303
  • And claim he had risen from the dead.
  • 00:15:25.303 --> 00:15:28.006
  • They knew that would validate that he was the messiah.
  • 00:15:28.006 --> 00:15:30.808
  • So they wanted the authority
  • 00:15:30.808 --> 00:15:32.276
  • From pilate, the roman government,
  • 00:15:32.276 --> 00:15:34.445
  • To make that grave secure.
  • 00:15:34.445 --> 00:15:36.547
  • Now, what did pilate give them to secure the grave?
  • 00:15:36.547 --> 00:15:39.450
  • Two things.
  • 00:15:39.450 --> 00:15:40.618
  • First of all, the roman guard.
  • 00:15:40.618 --> 00:15:43.421
  • Now when we see this play enacted at easter pageants,
  • 00:15:43.421 --> 00:15:47.392
  • You know, the roman guard,
  • 00:15:47.392 --> 00:15:49.260
  • That guy dressed in a miniskirt holding a wooden spear,
  • 00:15:49.260 --> 00:15:52.764
  • Kind of sleepy-eyed?
  • 00:15:52.764 --> 00:15:53.931
  • You know, the roman guard?
  • 00:15:53.931 --> 00:15:55.933
  • No, it wasn't a singular guard, it was a roman guard unit.
  • 00:15:55.933 --> 00:16:01.172
  • How do i know that?
  • 00:16:01.639 --> 00:16:02.640
  • Matthew 28 talks about the guards
  • 00:16:02.640 --> 00:16:04.442
  • Were amazed when they saw what they saw.
  • 00:16:04.442 --> 00:16:07.111
  • The roman guard unit consisted of 16 men,
  • 00:16:07.111 --> 00:16:10.681
  • Highly trained men, who were trained
  • 00:16:10.681 --> 00:16:13.017
  • To protect 36 square yards of space,
  • 00:16:13.017 --> 00:16:15.887
  • Knowing that if they were defeated,
  • 00:16:15.887 --> 00:16:19.390
  • If they gave up the ground that they were protecting,
  • 00:16:19.390 --> 00:16:21.993
  • Rome declared that they would be burned alive.
  • 00:16:21.993 --> 00:16:25.096
  • So they had every motivation in the world to protect
  • 00:16:25.096 --> 00:16:28.266
  • What they had been given to protect.
  • 00:16:28.266 --> 00:16:30.168
  • Pilate gave them these 16 highly trained men.
  • 00:16:30.168 --> 00:16:33.604
  • Not only that, he gave them the roman seal.
  • 00:16:33.604 --> 00:16:37.208
  • And what's that?
  • 00:16:37.208 --> 00:16:38.142
  • Well, it's not some silly putty
  • 00:16:38.142 --> 00:16:39.377
  • You put on the crack of the tomb.
  • 00:16:39.377 --> 00:16:41.612
  • The roman seal was a large string
  • 00:16:41.612 --> 00:16:44.282
  • That was strung across the great rock.
  • 00:16:44.282 --> 00:16:46.684
  • It was held into place by two packets of packing clay.
  • 00:16:46.684 --> 00:16:51.456
  • And in the clay was the roman signet ring,
  • 00:16:51.456 --> 00:16:54.926
  • The impression of the ring,
  • 00:16:54.926 --> 00:16:56.861
  • Signifying that this grave was being protected
  • 00:16:56.861 --> 00:17:00.198
  • On the authority of rome itself.
  • 00:17:00.198 --> 00:17:02.100
  • And anybody who tampered with this grave
  • 00:17:02.100 --> 00:17:04.836
  • Would face the wrath of rome.
  • 00:17:04.836 --> 00:17:07.238
  • Now, why does matthew go to all of this detail to tell us
  • 00:17:07.238 --> 00:17:10.541
  • How the tomb was secured?
  • 00:17:10.541 --> 00:17:12.777
  • Well, it's to answer the question,
  • 00:17:12.777 --> 00:17:15.046
  • What happened to the body of jesus?
  • 00:17:15.046 --> 00:17:17.248
