  • 00:00:00.170 --> 00:00:00.180
  • 00:00:00.180 --> 00:00:00.190
  • 00:00:00.190 --> 00:00:00.200
  • 00:00:00.200 --> 00:00:00.210
  • 00:00:00.210 --> 00:00:10.120
  • 00:00:10.130 --> 00:00:18.130
  • Dr. Ed Young: Oh, about in the late 1980s,
  • 00:00:21.110 --> 00:00:27.080
  • 1990s, the end of last century, most of the scholars,
  • 00:00:27.090 --> 00:00:33.160
  • and erudite people, and philosophers in the Western
  • 00:00:33.170 --> 00:00:37.140
  • world predicted that by the first decade of the 21st century
  • 00:00:37.150 --> 00:00:45.040
  • that religion would be an anachronism in America.
  • 00:00:45.050 --> 00:00:51.290
  • Anachronism means an era in respect to time.
  • 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:57.170
  • In other words, religion would be something that we used to do,
  • 00:00:57.180 --> 00:01:04.100
  • that all faith virtually would go out of existence.
  • 00:01:04.110 --> 00:01:07.210
  • There would be decline in attendance in churches,
  • 00:01:07.220 --> 00:01:12.210
  • synagogues, and the whole business about understanding the
  • 00:01:12.220 --> 00:01:17.180
  • transcendent would be out of date and out of sequence.
  • 00:01:17.190 --> 00:01:24.120
  • Because the scientists were discovering so much about
  • 00:01:24.130 --> 00:01:26.280
  • creation, and they were on the verge of creating life itself,
  • 00:01:26.290 --> 00:01:30.170
  • and there were so many breakthroughs about the origin
  • 00:01:30.180 --> 00:01:34.050
  • of this universe and how everything operated that,
  • 00:01:34.060 --> 00:01:37.030
  • oh, certainly by the early part of the 21st century there would
  • 00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:42.000
  • be few, if any, expressions of faith.
  • 00:01:42.010 --> 00:01:47.230
  • But yet today, we see major faith,
  • 00:01:47.240 --> 00:01:52.110
  • little faith, minor faith, silly faith,
  • 00:01:52.120 --> 00:01:54.270
  • ridiculous faith, all kinds of faith groups and religious
  • 00:01:54.280 --> 00:01:59.210
  • groups are literally exploding in America.
  • 00:01:59.220 --> 00:02:05.180
  • Mr. Gallup in his latest poll revealed that 94% of people who
  • 00:02:05.190 --> 00:02:12.180
  • live in America believe in some kind of god.
  • 00:02:12.190 --> 00:02:17.080
  • On any given Sunday, there are more people gathered in places
  • 00:02:17.090 --> 00:02:21.000
  • of worship than there are in all the sporting events in America
  • 00:02:21.010 --> 00:02:25.270
  • put together.
  • 00:02:25.280 --> 00:02:28.260
  • So, faith, and religion, and worship,
  • 00:02:28.270 --> 00:02:32.110
  • and seeking to know, and understand,
  • 00:02:32.120 --> 00:02:35.030
  • and follow God is at an all-time high in our culture.
  • 00:02:35.040 --> 00:02:41.050
  • And therefore, we find a lot of people who come up to me,
  • 00:02:41.060 --> 00:02:44.220
  • and they may come up to you, and say the silliest thing that they
  • 00:02:44.230 --> 00:02:53.150
  • can possibly say, "All religions are basically the same.
  • 00:02:53.160 --> 00:03:02.170
  • We're climbing many different roads,
  • 00:03:02.180 --> 00:03:05.240
  • wanting to go to heaven.
  • 00:03:05.250 --> 00:03:07.160
  • It doesn't matter which trail you take as long
  • 00:03:07.170 --> 00:03:11.250
  • as you're sincere."
  • 00:03:11.260 --> 00:03:17.060
  • Anybody who says that and believes that has exposed
  • 00:03:17.070 --> 00:03:22.170
  • themself to one simple fact.
  • 00:03:22.180 --> 00:03:25.040
  • They have never seriously looked at any faith or any religion.
  • 00:03:25.050 --> 00:03:30.230
  • They've never had that experience.
  • 00:03:30.240 --> 00:03:33.060
  • Because you take the major questions of life,
  • 00:03:33.070 --> 00:03:36.150
  • the big questions of life: "Who am I?" a question of identity;
  • 00:03:36.160 --> 00:03:43.290
  • "Where did I come from?" a question of origin;
  • 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:49.210
  • "Why am I here?" a question of purpose;
  • 00:03:49.220 --> 00:03:54.080
  • "Where am I going?" a question of destiny.
  • 00:03:54.090 --> 00:04:00.060
  • Those are the big four.
  • 00:04:00.070 --> 00:04:03.020
  • And you could take the cults, the religions,
  • 00:04:03.030 --> 00:04:05.290
  • the denominations, and you could put them all down and ask those
  • 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:10.080
  • big four questions and you get radically different answers.
  • 00:04:10.090 --> 00:04:16.250
  • All religions are not the same.
  • 00:04:16.260 --> 00:04:20.180
  • All denominations are not the same.
  • 00:04:20.190 --> 00:04:22.210
  • Or like the country preacher back in Mississippi said,
  • 00:04:22.220 --> 00:04:26.260
  • "All abominations are not the same."
  • 00:04:26.270 --> 00:04:33.010
  • Because the basic understanding of authority,
  • 00:04:33.020 --> 00:04:37.210
  • and ultimate meaning, and the big question of
  • 00:04:37.220 --> 00:04:41.090
  • epistemology--you say, "Well, what is that?"
  • 00:04:41.100 --> 00:04:44.050
  • It means, how do you know that you know?
  • 00:04:44.060 --> 00:04:47.120
  • That's epistemology.
  • 00:04:47.130 --> 00:04:48.220
  • How do you know that you know?
  • 00:04:48.230 --> 00:04:50.020
  • They answer these questions totally different.
  • 00:04:50.030 --> 00:04:54.010
  • And therefore, we need today with all the plethora of
  • 00:04:54.020 --> 00:04:59.230
  • religious activity, and faith, and cults,
  • 00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:02.230
  • and everything we read, and hear,
  • 00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:05.100
  • and see around us and on television,
  • 00:05:05.110 --> 00:05:08.010
  • we need people who will stand up and be spiritual guides,
  • 00:05:08.020 --> 00:05:13.220
  • men and women who will say, "That is true.
  • 00:05:13.230 --> 00:05:17.170
  • That is false."
  • 00:05:17.180 --> 00:05:20.100
  • And we need somebody who will shout and say,
  • 00:05:20.110 --> 00:05:22.230
  • "Look, this is the real God."
  • 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:26.090
  • And this is how you can tell the difference between that which is
  • 00:05:26.100 --> 00:05:30.230
  • valid in worship and that which is invalid in worship,
  • 00:05:30.240 --> 00:05:36.150
  • spiritual guides.
  • 00:05:36.160 --> 00:05:40.000
  • The 8th century was much like today.
  • 00:05:40.010 --> 00:05:44.170
  • You see, in Israel for a long, long time,
  • 00:05:44.180 --> 00:05:47.280
  • there was the worship of the one and true God,
  • 00:05:47.290 --> 00:05:50.070
  • the God of Israel, the God of Abraham,
  • 00:05:50.080 --> 00:05:54.090
  • and Isaac, and Jacob.
  • 00:05:54.100 --> 00:05:55.260
  • That was the true God.
  • 00:05:55.270 --> 00:05:57.090
  • And though there was idolatry, and though there was many other
  • 00:05:57.100 --> 00:06:00.230
  • expressions, for the nation as a whole was a theocracy and they
  • 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:06.120
  • worshipped the Living God, Jehovah God.
  • 00:06:06.130 --> 00:06:11.240
  • Until the 8th century B.C.
  • 00:06:11.250 --> 00:06:16.170
  • Ahab, Jezebel became king and queen of Israel and then very
  • 00:06:16.180 --> 00:06:20.230
  • intentionally they took pagan worship into Israel and sought
  • 00:06:20.240 --> 00:06:27.280
  • to make Israel into a pluralistic nation,
  • 00:06:27.290 --> 00:06:32.250
  • with all kind of gods and goddesses.
  • 00:06:32.260 --> 00:06:35.170
  • And they brought in 400 prophets of Baal,
  • 00:06:35.180 --> 00:06:38.090
  • and 450 prophets of Astaroth, the prophets of sensuality and
  • 00:06:38.100 --> 00:06:42.150
  • sexuality, and the prophets of groves,
  • 00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:45.090
  • Astaroth, and the prophets of Baal,
  • 00:06:45.100 --> 00:06:47.290
  • and Baal was the god of the harvest,
  • 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:50.050
  • the god of the seasons, the god of fire.
  • 00:06:50.060 --> 00:06:55.050
  • And so, everywhere you went in Israel there was an altar
  • 00:06:55.060 --> 00:06:57.190
  • in the valley.
  • 00:06:57.200 --> 00:06:59.090
  • There was a shelter, a monument on top of the mountain.
  • 00:06:59.100 --> 00:07:03.290
  • There was all kinds of worship going on everywhere.
  • 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:08.280
  • And the only god that was now forbidden was the God of Israel,
  • 00:07:08.290 --> 00:07:14.050
  • was Jehovah.
  • 00:07:14.060 --> 00:07:15.150
  • In fact, those who worshipped Jehovah,
  • 00:07:15.160 --> 00:07:17.060
  • the prophets, and those who followed him who remained as
  • 00:07:17.070 --> 00:07:20.240
  • a remnant, they were either killed or in hiding,
  • 00:07:20.250 --> 00:07:24.140
  • because we know that about 6.000 or 7.000 of them were in caves
  • 00:07:24.150 --> 00:07:29.040
  • when Ahab and Jezebel sat on the throne.
  • 00:07:29.050 --> 00:07:35.190
  • Like our nation today, all kinds of religious stuff,
  • 00:07:35.200 --> 00:07:41.190
  • bizarre, wild.
  • 00:07:41.200 --> 00:07:44.220
  • It used to just be in California,
  • 00:07:44.230 --> 00:07:47.120
  • but it has swept all the way through Texas,
  • 00:07:47.130 --> 00:07:50.140
  • through Florida, across our land.
  • 00:07:50.150 --> 00:07:53.240
  • In California, they have a cult in which they believe that Jesus
  • 00:07:53.250 --> 00:07:57.160
  • was a mushroom.
  • 00:07:57.170 --> 00:08:01.020
  • True, they got a good group.
  • 00:08:01.030 --> 00:08:05.190
  • Jesus was a mushroom.
  • 00:08:05.200 --> 00:08:08.070
  • So, we have all of this.
  • 00:08:08.080 --> 00:08:10.040
  • How can you tell that which is true and that which is false?
  • 00:08:10.050 --> 00:08:17.190
  • And in the days of Elijah, they had the same problem.
  • 00:08:17.200 --> 00:08:23.020
  • They need spiritual guides.
  • 00:08:23.030 --> 00:08:25.020
  • They need truth tellers.
  • 00:08:25.030 --> 00:08:26.150
  • They need discerners who could stand up and say,
  • 00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:29.010
  • "Hey, that's not it.
  • 00:08:29.020 --> 00:08:31.050
  • Hey, this is it."
  • 00:08:31.060 --> 00:08:34.010
  • And they were shouting, "Will the real God stand up?"
  • 00:08:34.020 --> 00:08:38.230
  • And many of us feel the same way in this day and age.
  • 00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:41.010
  • Elijah was that guy.
  • 00:08:41.020 --> 00:08:42.270
  • We've seen God preparing Elijah for something that
  • 00:08:42.280 --> 00:08:47.030
  • was oh so important.
  • 00:08:47.040 --> 00:08:50.220
  • What in the world is God doing?
  • 00:08:50.230 --> 00:08:52.250
  • Elijah, being obedient to him in confronting the king,
  • 00:08:52.260 --> 00:08:55.220
  • and now Elijah being obedient in concealment,
  • 00:08:55.230 --> 00:08:58.230
  • and of all things, the brook dries up.
  • 00:08:58.240 --> 00:09:03.250
  • And then in our Scripture, if you listen carefully,
  • 00:09:03.260 --> 00:09:06.280
  • God speaks to Elijah and says, "Go to Zarephath."
  • 00:09:06.290 --> 00:09:11.030
  • What does the word "Zarephath" mean?
  • 00:09:11.040 --> 00:09:13.220
  • It means smelter.
  • 00:09:13.230 --> 00:09:16.160
  • To be--evidentially in Zarephath,
  • 00:09:16.170 --> 00:09:18.190
  • there was a smeltering plant.
  • 00:09:18.200 --> 00:09:20.120
  • They would take gold and metals, and they would put them under
  • 00:09:20.130 --> 00:09:23.160
  • heat, and they would melt them down,
  • 00:09:23.170 --> 00:09:25.290
  • and the dross would come out.
  • 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:27.270
  • It would be pure gold at the bottom,
  • 00:09:27.280 --> 00:09:30.080
  • but the dross would come and they would skim all that
  • 00:09:30.090 --> 00:09:33.170
  • that was extraneous off the top until only purity was left.
  • 00:09:33.180 --> 00:09:37.270
  • And so now, Elijah leaves Chorath,
  • 00:09:37.280 --> 00:09:41.100
  • where he's been cut off, and cut down,
  • 00:09:41.110 --> 00:09:43.070
  • and cut out, and he goes to Zarephath,
  • 00:09:43.080 --> 00:09:45.200
  • and now he's going to be melted.
  • 00:09:45.210 --> 00:09:51.000
  • Have you noticed that trouble,
  • 00:09:51.010 --> 00:09:52.160
  • follows trouble, follows trouble.
  • 00:09:52.170 --> 00:09:54.270
  • You say, "Well boy, I got over that--" boom!
  • 00:09:54.280 --> 00:09:56.250
  • And then, I mean, is that what happens to him?
  • 00:09:56.260 --> 00:10:02.050
  • What in the world is God doing with Elijah?
  • 00:10:02.060 --> 00:10:04.210
  • He goes to Zarephath, and not some rich merchant is going to
  • 00:10:04.220 --> 00:10:07.130
  • look after him, but some widow who is poor as dirt.
  • 00:10:07.140 --> 00:10:11.240
  • When he arrives at the gate, he simply asks for water.
  • 00:10:11.250 --> 00:10:15.220
  • Then he says, "Just make me a little cake that I might eat."
  • 00:10:15.230 --> 00:10:19.040
  • He had traveled from Chorath to Zarephath.
  • 00:10:19.050 --> 00:10:22.130
  • If we had a map of Israel, you would
  • 00:10:22.140 --> 00:10:24.130
  • see that's about 100 miles.
  • 00:10:24.140 --> 00:10:28.160
  • He was a man with a price on his head.
  • 00:10:28.170 --> 00:10:31.100
  • All the people were looking for Elijah,
  • 00:10:31.110 --> 00:10:35.030
  • who had been blamed for the rains stopping and there was an
  • 00:10:35.040 --> 00:10:39.080
  • all points reward out for him, wanted dead or dead.
  • 00:10:39.090 --> 00:10:45.270
  • And he traveled 100 miles through that territory,
  • 00:10:45.280 --> 00:10:48.270
  • and he leaves Israel of all things.
  • 00:10:48.280 --> 00:10:52.190
  • He goes into Gentile country.
  • 00:10:52.200 --> 00:10:54.130
  • He goes to Sidon, way up on the coast outside of Israel.
  • 00:10:54.140 --> 00:11:02.160
  • And guess who was the king of Sidon?
  • 00:11:02.170 --> 00:11:06.080
  • Jezebel's dad.
  • 00:11:06.090 --> 00:11:12.190
  • The citadel of paganism, of godlessness, of immorality.
  • 00:11:12.200 --> 00:11:19.010
  • And here this widow's gonna look after you,
  • 00:11:19.020 --> 00:11:21.080
  • and she's so poor, and she's making sticks to prepare the
  • 00:11:21.090 --> 00:11:24.230
  • last meal for her, her son, and her family.
  • 00:11:24.240 --> 00:11:27.090
  • And Elijah must have thought, "Welcome to Zarephath."
  • 00:11:27.100 --> 00:11:32.270
  • Boy, from a dried up brook, to being melted down,
  • 00:11:32.280 --> 00:11:38.210
  • to being smelted.
  • 00:11:38.220 --> 00:11:41.210
  • And then an amazing thing happened.
  • 00:11:41.220 --> 00:11:43.240
  • The woman recognized the difference between the God
  • 00:11:43.250 --> 00:11:47.050
  • of Israel and the pagan gods.
  • 00:11:47.060 --> 00:11:51.120
  • You see it in the Scripture.
  • 00:11:51.130 --> 00:11:53.020
  • She made the breadcake and Elijah told her,
  • 00:11:53.030 --> 00:11:56.060
  • "Every day you can prepare a meal,
  • 00:11:56.070 --> 00:11:59.210
  • and the oil will not run out and the flour will not run out."
  • 00:11:59.220 --> 00:12:03.080
  • And that happened day, after day,
  • 00:12:03.090 --> 00:12:06.230
  • after day for two plus years.
  • 00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:09.240
  • When she had only enough for one last meal,
  • 00:12:09.250 --> 00:12:12.000
  • suddenly there was a daily miracle.
  • 00:12:12.010 --> 00:12:16.000
  • Suddenly, I believe this woman began to believe in the true and
  • 00:12:16.010 --> 00:12:19.110
  • living God of Israel.
  • 00:12:19.120 --> 00:12:21.140
  • I can imagine Elijah teaching the Scripture
  • 00:12:21.150 --> 00:12:23.160
  • and then praying together.
  • 00:12:23.170 --> 00:12:25.120
  • And one commentator said that, as she saw they would have oil
  • 00:12:25.130 --> 00:12:30.110
  • and flour to eat, they didn't have everything they wanted,
  • 00:12:30.120 --> 00:12:34.180
  • but they had everything they needed.
  • 00:12:34.190 --> 00:12:37.230
  • Isn't that great?
  • 00:12:37.240 --> 00:12:39.080
  • We don't have all we want, but most of us
  • 00:12:39.090 --> 00:12:41.100
  • have everything we need.
  • 00:12:41.110 --> 00:12:44.010
  • And so you can imagine, this woman
  • 00:12:44.020 --> 00:12:45.250
  • is seeing a miracle, miracle.
  • 00:12:45.260 --> 00:12:47.250
  • Every morning when she looks at the oil we ran out yesterday,
  • 00:12:47.260 --> 00:12:50.130
  • there's some more, just enough.
  • 00:12:50.140 --> 00:12:51.280
  • There's some flour.
  • 00:12:51.290 --> 00:12:53.110
  • We used it all, and there's some more.
  • 00:12:53.120 --> 00:12:54.210
  • And day after day, so you can imagine that when Elijah would
  • 00:12:54.220 --> 00:12:58.030
  • wake up and go down from--he slept on the roof.
  • 00:12:58.040 --> 00:13:00.230
  • That would be the prophet's chamber.
  • 00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:03.080
  • He would go down, he would hear her singing,
  • 00:13:03.090 --> 00:13:05.130
  • Praise God from whom all biscuits flow.
  • 00:13:05.140 --> 00:13:13.080
  • Yeah.
  • 00:13:13.090 --> 00:13:18.000
  • You see, God was teaching Elijah that he's going to be saved
  • 00:13:18.010 --> 00:13:22.140
  • through this poor woman, and also that woman was gonna be
  • 00:13:22.150 --> 00:13:27.020
  • saved through him, see?
  • 00:13:27.030 --> 00:13:31.190
  • Powerful stuff.
  • 00:13:31.200 --> 00:13:34.230
  • Powerful man.
  • 00:13:34.240 --> 00:13:36.280
  • God is teaching Elijah what?
  • 00:13:36.290 --> 00:13:39.010
  • He's teaching Elijah obedience.
  • 00:13:39.020 --> 00:13:42.110
  • He's teaching Elijah to live one day at a time.
  • 00:13:42.120 --> 00:13:46.220
  • He's teaching Elijah to be dependent upon him.
  • 00:13:46.230 --> 00:13:52.120
  • Don't tell anybody.
  • 00:13:52.130 --> 00:13:55.120
  • Shh, keep it a secret.
  • 00:13:55.130 --> 00:13:57.000
  • That's exactly what God wants all of us to learn.
  • 00:13:57.010 --> 00:14:01.100
  • Obey, live on day at a time, be dependent on him.
  • 00:14:01.110 --> 00:14:08.160
  • My brook dried up.
  • 00:14:08.170 --> 00:14:10.000
  • Man, now I'm being melted in this impoverished
  • 00:14:10.010 --> 00:14:12.290
  • area by this widow.
  • 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:14.180
  • You see, God is able to do amazing things through those
  • 00:14:14.190 --> 00:14:20.140
  • who are willing to move from being instruments,
  • 00:14:20.150 --> 00:14:24.190
  • that's something God uses, to becoming servants,
  • 00:14:24.200 --> 00:14:27.080
  • to being just Elijah the Tishbite,
  • 00:14:27.090 --> 00:14:29.260
  • to being Elijah, at the end of the chapter,
  • 00:14:29.270 --> 00:14:32.230
  • a man of God or a woman of God.
  • 00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:35.270
  • God puts us through Choraths and Zarephaths so we'll
  • 00:14:35.280 --> 00:14:44.260
  • know the real God.
  • 00:14:44.270 --> 00:14:46.120
  • Elijah was able to determine, "That's the real God."
  • 00:14:46.130 --> 00:14:49.100
  • In our society, in our world, there's so many people who claim
  • 00:14:49.110 --> 00:14:52.240
  • to have visions and dreams, and God spoke,
  • 00:14:52.250 --> 00:14:56.000
  • and God acted, and God moved.
  • 00:14:56.010 --> 00:14:58.100
  • How do you determine the real God from those gods
  • 00:14:58.110 --> 00:15:02.270
  • and goddesses that are not real?
  • 00:15:02.280 --> 00:15:05.030
  • That was the problem in the 8th century B.C.
  • 00:15:05.040 --> 00:15:07.160
  • and that's our problem today.
  • 00:15:07.170 --> 00:15:10.280
  • Let me tell you three things.
  • 00:15:10.290 --> 00:15:13.280
  • First of all, the real God is a God of the outsiders.
  • 00:15:13.290 --> 00:15:22.070
  • So, what does that mean?
  • 00:15:22.080 --> 00:15:23.240
  • When Elijah showed up in Zarephath,
  • 00:15:23.250 --> 00:15:26.210
  • he worked and realized that God gives grace to outsiders because
  • 00:15:26.220 --> 00:15:32.250
  • there was a widow woman there.
  • 00:15:32.260 --> 00:15:35.250
  • She was an economic outsider.
  • 00:15:35.260 --> 00:15:38.030
  • He was poor as dirt.
  • 00:15:38.040 --> 00:15:40.270
  • She was a religious outsider.
  • 00:15:40.280 --> 00:15:43.110
  • She worshiped all the pagan gods.
  • 00:15:43.120 --> 00:15:45.270
  • She was a moral outsider.
  • 00:15:45.280 --> 00:15:48.230
  • She didn't have any understanding of the
  • 00:15:48.240 --> 00:15:50.060
  • Ten Commandments or right and wrong in her life.
  • 00:15:50.070 --> 00:15:53.120
  • She was a racial outsider.
  • 00:15:53.130 --> 00:15:55.260
  • She was a hated Gentile.
  • 00:15:55.270 --> 00:15:59.040
  • She was a political outsider.
  • 00:15:59.050 --> 00:16:01.120
  • She lived in Sidon, Tyre and Sidon,
  • 00:16:01.130 --> 00:16:04.160
  • the nation most hated by the Jews at this moment.
  • 00:16:04.170 --> 00:16:07.130
  • She was an outsider in every way.
  • 00:16:07.140 --> 00:16:09.170
  • And here is the real God is speaking to her who has a total
  • 00:16:09.180 --> 00:16:14.210
  • outsider as far as the Jews were concerned.
  • 00:16:14.220 --> 00:16:19.000
  • When you get home, take your Bible,
  • 00:16:19.010 --> 00:16:21.230
  • open it up to Luke chapter number 4.
  • 00:16:21.240 --> 00:16:24.180
  • Luke chapter number 4 is when Jesus went back to his hometown
  • 00:16:24.190 --> 00:16:28.270
  • of Nazareth while he had some fame as a healer,
  • 00:16:28.280 --> 00:16:33.200
  • particularly in Capernaum.
  • 00:16:33.210 --> 00:16:35.170
  • And he goes back and he's asked to preach a sermon in
  • 00:16:35.180 --> 00:16:38.160
  • the synagogue in Nazareth.
  • 00:16:38.170 --> 00:16:42.040
  • And he stands up and guess what Scripture he reads?
  • 00:16:42.050 --> 00:16:46.230
  • Ours. Our Scripture.
  • 00:16:46.240 --> 00:16:50.240
  • He simply reads this passage about Elijah going there to
  • 00:16:50.250 --> 00:16:56.000
  • Zarephath and being received by an outsider.
  • 00:16:56.010 --> 00:17:00.090
  • And he said in his homily there that there were plenty of widows
  • 00:17:00.100 --> 00:17:05.160
  • in Israel that could have helped this prophet,
  • 00:17:05.170 --> 00:17:09.080
  • but God sent him outside of Israel.
  • 00:17:09.090 --> 00:17:15.280
  • And when he said this, he threw in the story of Naaman,
  • 00:17:15.290 --> 00:17:22.080
  • and suddenly those Jews there in Nazareth realized that the real
  • 00:17:22.090 --> 00:17:26.240
  • God was a God of outsiders who offered grace to outsiders.
  • 00:17:26.250 --> 00:17:31.270
  • What did they do with Jesus in his first sermon?
  • 00:17:31.280 --> 00:17:35.000
  • They took him to a cliff and would have pushed him over had
  • 00:17:35.010 --> 00:17:40.270
  • he not sorta walked through the middle of them.
  • 00:17:40.280 --> 00:17:44.040
  • You see what brought wrath to those Jews there in the
  • 00:17:44.050 --> 00:17:48.030
  • 1st century when he talked about Elijah,
  • 00:17:48.040 --> 00:17:51.060
  • and God showing grace, and using outsiders to minister to this
  • 00:17:51.070 --> 00:17:55.180
  • great prophet in their history.
  • 00:17:55.190 --> 00:17:58.210
  • It infuriated them and still infuriates some of us.
  • 00:17:58.220 --> 00:18:02.010
  • We are church folks, you know, and we don't have much in common
  • 00:18:02.020 --> 00:18:07.040
  • with those who don't think as we think,
  • 00:18:07.050 --> 00:18:10.220
  • don't live as we live, don't--and we have all of these
  • 00:18:10.230 --> 00:18:15.170
  • outsiders who are not a part of our little clique,
  • 00:18:15.180 --> 00:18:19.180
  • and our little club, and our sweet little group,
  • 00:18:19.190 --> 00:18:22.200
  • that they can sing the hymns and know all the anthems.
  • 00:18:22.210 --> 00:18:26.140
  • And we realize that God loves and has grace
  • 00:18:26.150 --> 00:18:30.260
  • toward the outsiders.
  • 00:18:30.270 --> 00:18:36.100
  • That's the real God.
  • 00:18:36.110 --> 00:18:38.210
  • For God so loved the W-O-R-L-D, world,
  • 00:18:38.220 --> 00:18:44.110
  • with no exceptions.
  • 00:18:44.120 --> 00:18:48.200
  • The real God is a God who reaches, is a God of outsiders.
  • 00:18:48.210 --> 00:18:54.250
  • Also, we see the real God is a living God.
  • 00:18:54.260 --> 00:18:58.070
  • This widow woman knew the difference between the living
  • 00:18:58.080 --> 00:19:01.110
  • God of Israel and the idols that were made.
  • 00:19:01.120 --> 00:19:05.030
  • When we worship something we made ourselves and something
  • 00:19:05.040 --> 00:19:07.220
  • we say, "Well, this is God for me.
  • 00:19:07.230 --> 00:19:10.130
  • You know, I'm gonna worship the sun, the moon, and the stars.
  • 00:19:10.140 --> 00:19:13.040
  • I'm gonna worship feeling good," we have all
  • 00:19:13.050 --> 00:19:14.270
  • these idols that we create.
  • 00:19:14.280 --> 00:19:22.020
  • And so, the living God is different from a dead God.
  • 00:19:22.030 --> 00:19:26.150
  • See, the living God is wild.
  • 00:19:26.160 --> 00:19:28.240
  • The living God is capricious.
  • 00:19:28.250 --> 00:19:30.180
  • The living God is sovereign.
  • 00:19:30.190 --> 00:19:32.110
  • And that is the reason when the boy died,
  • 00:19:32.120 --> 00:19:35.070
  • what did this widow of Zarephath,
  • 00:19:35.080 --> 00:19:38.060
  • what did she say to Elijah?
  • 00:19:38.070 --> 00:19:39.180
  • She said, "Did you come into my home,
  • 00:19:39.190 --> 00:19:43.000
  • O man of God, to make me aware of my sin and
  • 00:19:43.010 --> 00:19:46.220
  • did my sin kill my boy?"
  • 00:19:46.230 --> 00:19:50.160
  • Isn't that what she ask him?
  • 00:19:50.170 --> 00:19:52.050
  • "Did not my sin kill my boy?"
  • 00:19:52.060 --> 00:19:58.190
  • Then Elijah, when he prayed to God,
  • 00:19:58.200 --> 00:20:02.210
  • he asked God the same thing another way,
  • 00:20:02.220 --> 00:20:05.080
  • "Did sin, did her sin, kill this son,
  • 00:20:05.090 --> 00:20:08.260
  • this boy of hers?"
  • 00:20:08.270 --> 00:20:10.060
  • They knew innately that the living God sometimes comes and
  • 00:20:10.070 --> 00:20:17.080
  • could indeed judge sin.
  • 00:20:17.090 --> 00:20:19.160
  • They knew that sin needs to be judged,
  • 00:20:19.170 --> 00:20:22.050
  • has to be judged.
  • 00:20:22.060 --> 00:20:23.220
  • But wait a minute, here's a God of grace on one hand and here's
  • 00:20:23.230 --> 00:20:27.260
  • a God of truth on the other hand.
  • 00:20:27.270 --> 00:20:30.100
  • Here's a God of love on one hand.
  • 00:20:30.110 --> 00:20:32.250
  • We love to hear about the God of grace,
  • 00:20:32.260 --> 00:20:34.210
  • the God of truth, the God of love.
  • 00:20:34.220 --> 00:20:36.090
  • I can live any way I wanna live, do anything I wanna do.
  • 00:20:36.100 --> 00:20:39.060
  • God forgives me. God takes me back.
  • 00:20:39.070 --> 00:20:41.220
  • He gives me new life.
  • 00:20:41.230 --> 00:20:43.140
  • He gives me a fresh start, a new beginning.
  • 00:20:43.150 --> 00:20:45.080
  • We like all that, but this same God who is a living God,
  • 00:20:45.090 --> 00:20:49.260
  • who is a real God, knows that there has to be justice and
  • 00:20:49.270 --> 00:20:53.200
  • there has to be truth.
  • 00:20:53.210 --> 00:20:57.030
  • I can't say, "Well, that's true for you and
  • 00:20:57.040 --> 00:20:59.070
  • this is true for me."
  • 00:20:59.080 --> 00:21:02.130
  • True truth doesn't allow for that, you see?
  • 00:21:02.140 --> 00:21:10.080
  • And then we see something else about this real God.
  • 00:21:10.090 --> 00:21:16.080
  • The boy dies.
  • 00:21:16.090 --> 00:21:19.040
  • The widow woman says, "Did my son die because of my sins?"
  • 00:21:19.050 --> 00:21:25.080
  • And Elijah takes that boy's body,
  • 00:21:25.090 --> 00:21:26.260
  • and goes up to his room, and puts him on his bed,
  • 00:21:26.270 --> 00:21:30.020
  • and he puts his body--he stretches out over that boy.
  • 00:21:30.030 --> 00:21:33.020
  • Did you read it?
  • 00:21:33.030 --> 00:21:34.120
  • Three times, he stretches out over that boy and he prays.
  • 00:21:34.130 --> 00:21:39.060
  • And he says, "God, did this boy die because of my sin?"
  • 00:21:39.070 --> 00:21:43.270
  • and he stretches out and he prays.
  • 00:21:43.280 --> 00:21:45.150
  • What do you think he prayed?
  • 00:21:45.160 --> 00:21:47.000
  • I think he prayed what maybe some of us have prayed.
  • 00:21:47.010 --> 00:21:48.280
  • If you've ever lost a baby, a child,
  • 00:21:48.290 --> 00:21:50.270
  • you stretched out and said, "Oh God,
  • 00:21:50.280 --> 00:21:52.260
  • this sickness, take it upon me and spare this child."
  • 00:21:52.270 --> 00:21:56.180
  • That's what Elijah was praying.
  • 00:21:56.190 --> 00:21:58.070
  • He was stretched out.
  • 00:21:58.080 --> 00:22:01.180
  • He understood that God--there is punishment for sin.
  • 00:22:01.190 --> 00:22:04.190
  • He understood that, you know, how this worked,
  • 00:22:04.200 --> 00:22:07.000
  • but he prayed to a sovereign God,
  • 00:22:07.010 --> 00:22:08.170
  • and guess what?
  • 00:22:08.180 --> 00:22:09.270
  • The boy was resurrected.
  • 00:22:09.280 --> 00:22:13.040
  • The first account of resurrection in the Bible.
  • 00:22:13.050 --> 00:22:16.270
  • Elijah took that boy back to the widow,
  • 00:22:16.280 --> 00:22:19.130
  • handed it to the widow, and she said,
  • 00:22:19.140 --> 00:22:21.260
  • "Now I know you represent the true God and your Word is based
  • 00:22:21.270 --> 00:22:26.180
  • on God's Word and it is," remember the last word, "truth."
  • 00:22:26.190 --> 00:22:32.160
  • Truth.
  • 00:22:32.170 --> 00:22:34.280
  • You see, the real God is a God of outsiders,
  • 00:22:34.290 --> 00:22:38.080
  • the real God--and a God of grace,
  • 00:22:38.090 --> 00:22:39.290
  • but the real God also is a God of love and truth.
  • 00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:46.030
  • A God of grace and a God of judgment.
  • 00:22:46.040 --> 00:22:49.120
  • How can this be?
  • 00:22:49.130 --> 00:22:51.050
  • It's because the real God is a stretched-out God.
  • 00:22:51.060 --> 00:22:56.250
  • That's it.
  • 00:22:56.260 --> 00:22:58.130
  • The real God is a stretched out God.
  • 00:22:58.140 --> 00:23:02.000
  • Remember what Jesus said to Peter in the Gospel of John?
  • 00:23:02.010 --> 00:23:05.240
  • The resurrected Lord said, "Your hands will be stretched out and
  • 00:23:05.250 --> 00:23:11.060
  • people will take you where you do not want to go."
  • 00:23:11.070 --> 00:23:15.030
  • It was a prediction of the crucifixion of the apostle Peter
  • 00:23:15.040 --> 00:23:19.100
  • which took place in history.
  • 00:23:19.110 --> 00:23:22.260
  • It's like the widow said to God, "God,
  • 00:23:22.270 --> 00:23:28.120
  • did my son die because of my sin?"
  • 00:23:28.130 --> 00:23:35.160
  • And God said to her, "No, he is resurrected,
  • 00:23:35.170 --> 00:23:39.200
  • but my Son," said God to the widow,
  • 00:23:39.210 --> 00:23:44.040
  • "will die for your sin."
  • 00:23:44.050 --> 00:23:49.160
  • It is a stretched-out God who brings love and truth,
  • 00:23:49.170 --> 00:23:55.100
  • and grace and justice together and pays the price in himself
  • 00:23:55.110 --> 00:24:02.060
  • as a stretched-out God on Calvary.
  • 00:24:02.070 --> 00:24:05.210
  • And this is a pre-shadowing of the stretched-out God when Jesus
  • 00:24:05.220 --> 00:24:11.060
  • died on a cross for you and me.
  • 00:24:11.070 --> 00:24:17.200
  • God preparing Elijah, teaching him obedience to him,
  • 00:24:17.210 --> 00:24:23.210
  • teaching him to live one day at a time,
  • 00:24:23.220 --> 00:24:26.000
  • and teaching him to be totally dependent on him so Elijah could
  • 00:24:26.010 --> 00:24:30.270
  • be the guide in this day to point out the real God.
  • 00:24:30.280 --> 00:24:36.240
  • Let the real God stand up, because the real God is a God of
  • 00:24:36.250 --> 00:24:40.140
  • outsiders, a God of grace.
  • 00:24:40.150 --> 00:24:43.060
  • The real God is a living God who demands holiness and purity
  • 00:24:43.070 --> 00:24:50.010
  • which cannot be paid for by you and me in and of ourselves,
  • 00:24:50.020 --> 00:24:53.280
  • but the real God is a stretched-out God,
  • 00:24:53.290 --> 00:24:59.140
  • a stretched-out God, who died for you and me so that our sins
  • 00:24:59.150 --> 00:25:06.030
  • might be forgiven and we might have life, a resurrected life.
  • 00:25:06.040 --> 00:25:13.000
  • That's the real God, ladies and gentlemen.
  • 00:25:13.010 --> 00:25:18.070
  • And Elijah had to go to Chorath, be cut off,
  • 00:25:18.080 --> 00:25:20.240
  • cut up, cut out, had to go to Zarephath,
  • 00:25:20.250 --> 00:25:24.010
  • be melted down to be smelted to get all the dross out of his
  • 00:25:24.020 --> 00:25:27.140
  • life, so he could understand and be able to stand before all the
  • 00:25:27.150 --> 00:25:32.120
  • godlessness of his day and speak and represent the
  • 00:25:32.130 --> 00:25:38.190
  • true and living God.
  • 00:25:38.200 --> 00:25:42.270
  • And that's exactly what the Almighty wants you and me to
  • 00:25:42.280 --> 00:25:49.260
  • do in the 21st century, because Elijah will teach us how to know
  • 00:25:49.270 --> 00:25:57.040
  • God, how to follow God, and how to serve God.
  • 00:25:57.050 --> 00:26:05.130
  • This God who is the stretched-out God
  • 00:26:05.140 --> 00:26:12.100
  • in Jesus Christ.
  • 00:26:12.110 --> 00:26:14.290
  • male announcer: Our lives go through many seasons.
  • 00:26:16.030 --> 00:26:18.030
  • There are times of confidence and joy,
  • 00:26:18.040 --> 00:26:20.200
  • and there are times of doubt and desperation.
  • 00:26:20.210 --> 00:26:23.280
  • Despite these changing seasons, how can we make sure that we're
  • 00:26:23.290 --> 00:26:27.140
  • living the life God wants for us?
  • 00:26:27.150 --> 00:26:29.260
  • In his series, "Elijah: Truth for All Seasons,"
  • 00:26:29.270 --> 00:26:33.220
  • Dr. Young leads us through the life of the prophet Elijah,
  • 00:26:33.230 --> 00:26:37.050
  • a great man of God who stood for truth in the face of a pagan
  • 00:26:37.060 --> 00:26:41.010
  • king in an idolatrous nation.
  • 00:26:41.020 --> 00:26:43.120
  • However, like many of us today, he faced anxiety,
  • 00:26:43.130 --> 00:26:46.120
  • burnout, and depression.
  • 00:26:46.130 --> 00:26:49.030
  • Despite his weakness, God used Elijah in mighty ways.
  • 00:26:49.040 --> 00:26:52.100
  • In this series, you'll discover how God works out his purposes
  • 00:26:52.110 --> 00:26:56.090
  • even in times of deep despair and how he can
  • 00:26:56.100 --> 00:26:59.050
  • do that in your life too.
  • 00:26:59.060 --> 00:27:00.270

  • 00:27:15.210 --> 00:27:25.200
  • 00:27:25.210 --> 00:27:33.190
  • Dr. Young: Our God is a God of outsiders.
  • 00:27:36.100 --> 00:27:39.100
  • He's a God of the second chance.
  • 00:27:39.110 --> 00:27:41.180
  • Do you see how amazing that is?
  • 00:27:41.190 --> 00:27:44.140
  • There is no one beyond the reach of his love and grace.
  • 00:27:44.150 --> 00:27:49.160
  • And he gives us a way to know him,
  • 00:27:49.170 --> 00:27:51.020
