  • 00:00:16.090 --> 00:00:21.080
  • Ed Young: In the 8th century B.C., there's a man
  • 00:00:21.090 --> 00:00:27.090
  • named Elijah who lived 800 or 900 years before Christ.
  • 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:34.000
  • On the throne of Israel was a pagan king named Ahab,
  • 00:00:37.150 --> 00:00:43.150
  • and everybody knows the name of his wife, Jezebel.
  • 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:49.020
  • But with the rule of Ahab and Jezebel, we have something
  • 00:00:49.030 --> 00:00:52.240
  • that had never taken place in Israel before.
  • 00:00:52.250 --> 00:00:57.000
  • Now, paganism was institutionalized in the
  • 00:00:57.010 --> 00:01:02.040
  • government, and the brought into the palace 850 prophets,
  • 00:01:02.050 --> 00:01:08.050
  • pagan prophets, 400 prophets of Baal, 450 prophets of Ashtaroth.
  • 00:01:08.230 --> 00:01:14.230
  • And now, suddenly, the worship of the real God, Jehovah God,
  • 00:01:16.020 --> 00:01:21.020
  • was out of place, unacceptable, and Ahab lead to the killing of
  • 00:01:21.030 --> 00:01:26.080
  • those who followed the real God, and we know there were 6.000
  • 00:01:26.090 --> 00:01:31.010
  • or 7.000 of those who believed in him hiding in caves
  • 00:01:31.020 --> 00:01:35.120
  • in fear of their life.
  • 00:01:35.130 --> 00:01:39.150
  • And that's the situation, and, by the way, it's becoming more
  • 00:01:39.160 --> 00:01:45.090
  • and more like that without the absolute murder of those,
  • 00:01:45.100 --> 00:01:49.160
  • but in our 21st century, you can talk about any religion,
  • 00:01:49.170 --> 00:01:53.170
  • faith, cult, name, god.
  • 00:01:53.180 --> 00:01:56.150
  • You can deal with anything in the world in public life, but if
  • 00:01:56.160 --> 00:02:00.200
  • you get on television or radio and any kind of secular standing
  • 00:02:00.210 --> 00:02:06.080
  • and you say one word is absolutely prohibited,
  • 00:02:06.090 --> 00:02:09.230
  • and that's the word "Jesus."
  • 00:02:09.240 --> 00:02:14.080
  • That's the way it was in the 8th century.
  • 00:02:14.090 --> 00:02:19.000
  • And in this situation, we have Elijah, unlikely prophet,
  • 00:02:19.010 --> 00:02:24.090
  • last man standing.
  • 00:02:24.100 --> 00:02:27.050
  • He came from nowhere and was a nobody, and God said to Elijah,
  • 00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:32.150
  • "Go show yourself to Ahab and pronounce judgement on him,
  • 00:02:32.160 --> 00:02:37.250
  • and say, 'It will not rain until I give my word.'"
  • 00:02:37.260 --> 00:02:43.260
  • And so, we know that after Elijah's public pronouncement,
  • 00:02:44.040 --> 00:02:48.090
  • God said to his prophet, "Go hide yourself.
  • 00:02:48.100 --> 00:02:51.200
  • Go show yourself, pronounce this judgement, now go hide yourself.
  • 00:02:51.210 --> 00:02:56.050
  • Go to Cherith," and we saw Elijah there, hiding in the
  • 00:02:56.060 --> 00:03:01.170
  • backside of nowhere in Transjordan, and he was fed
  • 00:03:01.180 --> 00:03:05.200
  • supernaturally by birds, and he had fresh water from a brook.
  • 00:03:05.210 --> 00:03:11.210
  • And then, in the middle of that experience, what happened?
  • 00:03:12.010 --> 00:03:16.030
  • The brook dried up, and then God said to Elijah,
  • 00:03:16.040 --> 00:03:21.190
  • "Go to Zarephath," and he goes to a widow there,
  • 00:03:21.200 --> 00:03:26.010
  • and she was dirt poor.
  • 00:03:26.020 --> 00:03:28.000
  • And it's one thing to go and let someone who has means look
  • 00:03:28.010 --> 00:03:31.090
  • after you and take care of you, but it's humiliating to go
  • 00:03:31.100 --> 00:03:34.160
  • to someone who has less than you have.
  • 00:03:34.170 --> 00:03:37.060
  • That's what happened to Elijah.
  • 00:03:37.070 --> 00:03:39.230
  • But then you had the supernatural reproduction of
  • 00:03:39.240 --> 00:03:43.010
  • flour and oil, day after day, just enough for that day.
  • 00:03:43.020 --> 00:03:47.260
  • Then we have the resurrection of the son, the widow's son, there
  • 00:03:47.270 --> 00:03:52.200
  • in the house, and so, he stayed there some two years in hiding.
  • 00:03:52.210 --> 00:03:57.060
  • And then, finally, he showed himself, he pronounced the
  • 00:03:57.070 --> 00:04:00.170
  • judgement, he went in hiding for those three years,
  • 00:04:00.180 --> 00:04:04.050
  • and now God says, "Elijah, show yourself.
  • 00:04:04.060 --> 00:04:08.190
  • Go back to Ahab."
  • 00:04:08.200 --> 00:04:11.080
  • And this is where we pick up this dramatic, powerful story.
  • 00:04:11.090 --> 00:04:15.280
  • Look at 1 Kings chapter 18 verse 1.
  • 00:04:15.290 --> 00:04:19.060
  • "Now it happened after many days that the word of the Lord came
  • 00:04:19.070 --> 00:04:23.000
  • to Elijah in the third year, saying, 'Go show yourself
  • 00:04:23.010 --> 00:04:27.000
  • to Ahab, and I will send rain on the face of the earth.'"
  • 00:04:27.010 --> 00:04:32.100
  • That's something, isn't it?
  • 00:04:32.110 --> 00:04:34.050
  • After 3 years, rain, 3 1/2 years, rain,
  • 00:04:34.060 --> 00:04:38.290
  • and then, look what happens in verse 17 when Ahab sees Elijah.
  • 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:45.000
  • "When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, 'Is this you,
  • 00:04:45.210 --> 00:04:48.270
  • you troubler of Israel?'"
  • 00:04:48.280 --> 00:04:50.070
  • The word "troubler" there means snake.
  • 00:04:50.080 --> 00:04:52.040
  • He said, "You snake in the grass.
  • 00:04:52.050 --> 00:04:56.040
  • You're the one who's brought this drought upon Israel, and
  • 00:04:56.050 --> 00:04:59.120
  • now you come and face me again.
  • 00:04:59.130 --> 00:05:01.190
  • Three and a half years it hasn't rained,
  • 00:05:01.200 --> 00:05:03.070
  • you snake in the grass."
  • 00:05:03.080 --> 00:05:05.160
  • That's how the king addresses Elijah.
  • 00:05:05.170 --> 00:05:07.290
  • Look how Elijah responds.
  • 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:10.290
  • "He said, 'I have not troubled Israel, but you and your
  • 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:14.060
  • father's house have because you have forsaken the commandments
  • 00:05:14.070 --> 00:05:19.010
  • of the Lord and have followed the Baals.
  • 00:05:19.020 --> 00:05:21.280
  • Now then, send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel,
  • 00:05:21.290 --> 00:05:26.140
  • together with 450 prophets of Baal, 400 prophets
  • 00:05:26.150 --> 00:05:29.120
  • of the Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table.'"
  • 00:05:29.130 --> 00:05:32.040
  • He said to the king, "Go and have a national holiday and
  • 00:05:32.050 --> 00:05:36.200
  • invite all the prophets of Baal and Asherah up there.
  • 00:05:36.210 --> 00:05:40.180
  • Invite all the people of the land."
  • 00:05:40.190 --> 00:05:44.070
  • Now, this is what really is amazing to me is verse 20.
  • 00:05:44.080 --> 00:05:48.080
  • "So, Ahab sent a messenger among all the sons of Israel
  • 00:05:48.090 --> 00:05:53.150
  • and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel."
  • 00:05:53.160 --> 00:05:56.290
  • He did that which Elijah commanded, why, why?
  • 00:05:57.000 --> 00:06:03.020
  • First of all, he was afraid of Elijah.
  • 00:06:07.220 --> 00:06:12.140
  • Herod was afraid of John the Baptist.
  • 00:06:12.150 --> 00:06:15.170
  • He was the king, John the Baptist, you know,
  • 00:06:15.180 --> 00:06:18.150
  • desert preacher, why?
  • 00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:21.180
  • Governor Felix was afraid of Paul, and Paul was
  • 00:06:21.190 --> 00:06:25.250
  • in his prison, why?
  • 00:06:25.260 --> 00:06:30.160
  • Ahab was afraid of Elijah, why?
  • 00:06:30.170 --> 00:06:34.170
  • You see, when a man or a woman is clean, and right, and pure
  • 00:06:34.180 --> 00:06:39.060
  • before the Living God, and has no ulterior motives, and they
  • 00:06:39.070 --> 00:06:43.150
  • stand up, and they speak the truth of God, there's a fear
  • 00:06:43.160 --> 00:06:48.060
  • that comes in the life of those who are godless.
  • 00:06:48.070 --> 00:06:53.210
  • There's a second reason why the king did this.
  • 00:06:53.220 --> 00:06:58.160
  • The land desperately needed rain.
  • 00:06:58.170 --> 00:07:02.250
  • Here was a kingdom that was going out of business.
  • 00:07:02.260 --> 00:07:06.120
  • The whole issue was rain, and we've gotta have rain, and so,
  • 00:07:06.130 --> 00:07:09.120
  • this is the guy who stopped the rain and closed the windows of
  • 00:07:09.130 --> 00:07:13.140
  • heaven, now he's back and whatever it happens
  • 00:07:13.150 --> 00:07:16.030
  • on Mount Carmel, maybe he will open the windows of heaven
  • 00:07:16.040 --> 00:07:20.170
  • and we can have the refreshing rain
  • 00:07:20.180 --> 00:07:22.260
  • to come an replenish our land.
  • 00:07:22.270 --> 00:07:26.190
  • So, he agreed, and I have stood on Carmel many times
  • 00:07:26.200 --> 00:07:31.030
  • and imagined people coming from all over the ten tribes.
  • 00:07:31.040 --> 00:07:35.020
  • This was a northern kingdom, all people, I imagine thousands
  • 00:07:35.030 --> 00:07:38.250
  • would have come, and they'd gathered on the slopes
  • 00:07:38.260 --> 00:07:41.000
  • all around that mountain.
  • 00:07:41.010 --> 00:07:44.290
  • There were three groups on that mountain.
  • 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.130
  • First of all, there was the people and then there was, well,
  • 00:07:47.140 --> 00:07:50.210
  • we'll let the orchestra stand for--
  • 00:07:50.220 --> 00:07:55.010
  • they can stand for all the prophets of Baal.
  • 00:07:55.020 --> 00:07:59.230
  • There were about 850 of 'em, Baal and Asherah.
  • 00:07:59.240 --> 00:08:02.290
  • They would have been magnificently dressed, and
  • 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:05.150
  • around their neck, they would have had a piece of steel.
  • 00:08:05.160 --> 00:08:10.010
  • You see, this was the fire god, and can you imagine 850
  • 00:08:10.020 --> 00:08:14.020
  • appearing on the mountain along with Ahab and all of his
  • 00:08:14.030 --> 00:08:17.070
  • splendid robes carried there by all of his servants?
  • 00:08:17.080 --> 00:08:20.160
  • And they'd have these pieces of steel around their neck,
  • 00:08:20.170 --> 00:08:22.200
  • early in the morning, the sun would catch that steel, 850.
  • 00:08:22.210 --> 00:08:26.040
  • What a light show it would have been, you see it?
  • 00:08:26.050 --> 00:08:30.030
  • A light show, 850 men here and all their servants with pieces
  • 00:08:30.040 --> 00:08:33.230
  • of metal around their neck.
  • 00:08:33.240 --> 00:08:36.250
  • Light going out, they were there.
  • 00:08:36.260 --> 00:08:40.230
  • All the people were there, and then that solitary figure,
  • 00:08:40.240 --> 00:08:46.050
  • Elijah was there.
  • 00:08:46.060 --> 00:08:50.100
  • I imagine the people sort of felt sorry for him, said, "Look
  • 00:08:50.110 --> 00:08:53.180
  • at him, yeah, he's representing that old-fashioned God,
  • 00:08:53.190 --> 00:08:59.190
  • Jehovah, Yahweh, you know, look at him."
  • 00:08:59.280 --> 00:09:03.160
  • They felt sorry for him.
  • 00:09:03.170 --> 00:09:05.130
  • They didn't have to feel sorry for Elijah.
  • 00:09:05.140 --> 00:09:09.050
  • Let me tell you something, Shekinah was in his life
  • 00:09:09.060 --> 00:09:13.190
  • and the angels was mentors to his servant as he spoke
  • 00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:17.100
  • a word of truth.
  • 00:09:17.110 --> 00:09:19.220
  • Outnumbered, absolutely, but let me tell you something,
  • 00:09:19.230 --> 00:09:22.180
  • God plus one in any situation is always a majority,
  • 00:09:22.190 --> 00:09:28.190
  • always a majority.
  • 00:09:29.210 --> 00:09:32.200
  • So, we have the battle, the showdown, the Super Bowl,
  • 00:09:32.210 --> 00:09:36.270
  • O.K. Corral revisited, a battle of the gods,
  • 00:09:36.280 --> 00:09:41.010
  • and look how it opens.
  • 00:09:41.020 --> 00:09:43.080
  • "Elijah came near to all the people and said,
  • 00:09:43.090 --> 00:09:46.090
  • 'How long will you hesitate between two opinions?
  • 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:50.210
  • If the Lord is God, follow him, if Baal, follow him,'
  • 00:09:50.220 --> 00:09:54.160
  • but the people did not answer a word."
  • 00:09:54.170 --> 00:09:57.070
  • Isn't that typical?
  • 00:09:57.080 --> 00:09:58.170
  • All the people were saying, "Hey, you know, we don't see
  • 00:09:58.180 --> 00:10:00.180
  • a lot of difference in Baal and we don't see a lot
  • 00:10:00.190 --> 00:10:02.230
  • of difference in Jehovah.
  • 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:04.090
  • We've got all these gods, we just want it to rain.
  • 00:10:04.100 --> 00:10:09.160
  • We gotta have rain."
  • 00:10:09.170 --> 00:10:13.140
  • So, they didn't say a word.
  • 00:10:13.150 --> 00:10:15.190
  • Clear choice, wasn't it?
  • 00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:17.150
  • "How long halt ye between two opinions?"
  • 00:10:17.160 --> 00:10:20.090
  • God or Baal, God or Baal, does anybody not understand that?
  • 00:10:20.100 --> 00:10:25.120
  • Very clear, and then here we have the proposal
  • 00:10:25.130 --> 00:10:30.230
  • that Elijah--this is the battle.
  • 00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:32.200
  • Now, verse 23, "Then Elijah said to the people, 'I alone am left,
  • 00:10:32.210 --> 00:10:37.090
  • a prophet of the Lord, and Baal's prophets are 450 men.'"
  • 00:10:37.100 --> 00:10:40.280
  • Verse 23, "Now, let them choose two oxen.
  • 00:10:40.290 --> 00:10:44.020
  • Let them choose one ox for themselves, cut it up,
  • 00:10:44.030 --> 00:10:46.180
  • place it on the wood, but put no fire under it.
  • 00:10:46.190 --> 00:10:51.190
  • And I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood,
  • 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:54.230
  • and I will put fire under it.
  • 00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:57.230
  • Then you call on the name of your god and I will call
  • 00:10:57.240 --> 00:11:00.210
  • on the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire,
  • 00:11:00.220 --> 00:11:05.010
  • he is God.'
  • 00:11:05.020 --> 00:11:07.050
  • And the people said, 'That is a good idea.'"
  • 00:11:07.060 --> 00:11:13.060
  • And now we have the battle.
  • 00:11:14.220 --> 00:11:15.280
  • You know what the battle is over?
  • 00:11:15.290 --> 00:11:19.260
  • The battle is over worship, it really is.
  • 00:11:19.270 --> 00:11:24.080
  • We have worship of Baal, we have worship of the real God.
  • 00:11:24.090 --> 00:11:30.040
  • The battle is always over worship.
  • 00:11:30.050 --> 00:11:33.150
  • Show me your altar.
  • 00:11:33.160 --> 00:11:35.150
  • Show me that which in your life controls you.
  • 00:11:35.160 --> 00:11:37.240
  • Show me the Baal's in your life.
  • 00:11:37.250 --> 00:11:40.010
  • You say, "Oh, well, I don't have any Baal's in my life."
  • 00:11:40.020 --> 00:11:42.020
  • Sure, you do.
  • 00:11:42.030 --> 00:11:43.120
  • Anything or anybody we put in the place of the centrality of
  • 00:11:43.130 --> 00:11:48.180
  • our lives other than the living God, that is a Baal.
  • 00:11:48.190 --> 00:11:51.260
  • It can be your wife, your husband, your children, your
  • 00:11:51.270 --> 00:11:54.220
  • job, your vocation, your reputation, some skill that you
  • 00:11:54.230 --> 00:11:58.150
  • may have in a hobby or an advocation,
  • 00:11:58.160 --> 00:12:01.270
  • that can become Baal.
  • 00:12:01.280 --> 00:12:03.050
  • Anything that I put in the central part of my life
  • 00:12:03.060 --> 00:12:08.030
  • where God only belongs, that becomes a Baal.
  • 00:12:08.040 --> 00:12:13.040
  • That becomes a Baal.
  • 00:12:13.050 --> 00:12:16.020
  • So, we've got these Baals, and we see they begin to worship
  • 00:12:16.030 --> 00:12:21.270
  • Baal, the fire god with all the flashing around,
  • 00:12:21.280 --> 00:12:27.080
  • and look what happens.
  • 00:12:27.090 --> 00:12:28.260
  • Verse 25, "So, Elijah said to the prophets, 'Choose one ox for
  • 00:12:28.270 --> 00:12:32.120
  • yourselves and measure it first, for you are many, and call on
  • 00:12:32.130 --> 00:12:36.000
  • the name of your god, and put no fire under it.'
  • 00:12:36.010 --> 00:12:40.100
  • Then they took the ox which was given them and they prepared it
  • 00:12:40.110 --> 00:12:43.200
  • and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying,
  • 00:12:43.210 --> 00:12:46.250
  • 'O Baal, answer us.'"
  • 00:12:46.260 --> 00:12:48.240
  • And by the way, they must have said,
  • 00:12:48.250 --> 00:12:52.210
  • "Hey, we've got the advantage.
  • 00:12:52.220 --> 00:12:56.290
  • Our god is the god of the sun," all the reflection,
  • 00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:00.210
  • "He's the fire god, and we're going first."
  • 00:13:00.220 --> 00:13:06.220
  • Home court advantage, look, "From morning 'til noon, 'O Baal,
  • 00:13:06.230 --> 00:13:12.230
  • answer us,' but there was no voice, and no one answered.
  • 00:13:15.040 --> 00:13:17.270
  • And they leaped about they altar which they had made."
  • 00:13:17.280 --> 00:13:21.100
  • Verse 27, "It came about at noon that Elijah mocked them
  • 00:13:21.110 --> 00:13:24.280
  • and said, 'Call out in a loud voice, for he is a god.
  • 00:13:24.290 --> 00:13:30.210
  • Either he is occupied or gone aside or on a journey,
  • 00:13:30.220 --> 00:13:34.170
  • or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened.'"
  • 00:13:34.180 --> 00:13:39.050
  • By the way, the phrase there, "gone aside," poor translation.
  • 00:13:39.060 --> 00:13:43.190
  • You know what it really says?
  • 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:47.070
  • Elijah is saying to them, "Maybe your god has made a pit stop
  • 00:13:47.080 --> 00:13:51.120
  • in the celestial restroom."
  • 00:13:51.130 --> 00:13:54.140
  • That's literally what it means in the Hebrew,
  • 00:13:54.150 --> 00:13:56.010
  • I promise you that.
  • 00:13:56.020 --> 00:13:58.090
  • The translators just cleaned it up a little bit for us,
  • 00:13:58.100 --> 00:14:01.100
  • so we'd be able to handle it.
  • 00:14:01.110 --> 00:14:04.030
  • And you see, he was saying, "Shout louder, maybe he's on
  • 00:14:04.040 --> 00:14:07.230
  • a trip, maybe he's preoccupied, maybe he's, you know,
  • 00:14:07.240 --> 00:14:11.100
  • doing something else, shout louder."
  • 00:14:11.110 --> 00:14:13.160
  • And the amazing things is, those pagan prophets didn't see how
  • 00:14:13.170 --> 00:14:17.270
  • Elijah was belittling their god, seeing how human, how trivial,
  • 00:14:17.280 --> 00:14:22.220
  • how silly their god really was.
  • 00:14:22.230 --> 00:14:24.220
  • You see, that's the underpinning of this, because they begin
  • 00:14:24.230 --> 00:14:28.200
  • to do what Elijah suggested, it's astounding.
  • 00:14:28.210 --> 00:14:34.100
  • Verse 28, "So, they cried with a loud voice and cut themselves
  • 00:14:34.110 --> 00:14:38.090
  • according to their custom with swords and lances
  • 00:14:38.100 --> 00:14:41.110
  • until the blood gushed out of them.
  • 00:14:41.120 --> 00:14:43.270
  • When midday was past, they raved until the time of the offering
  • 00:14:43.280 --> 00:14:49.270
  • of the evening sacrifice," three o'clock in the afternoon.
  • 00:14:49.280 --> 00:14:53.020
  • "But there was no voice, no one answered," and get this,
  • 00:14:53.030 --> 00:14:57.270
  • "And no one paid attention."
  • 00:14:57.280 --> 00:15:01.080
  • Man, this was--there's no business like show business.
  • 00:15:01.090 --> 00:15:06.060
  • Man, this is a super rock concert.
  • 00:15:06.070 --> 00:15:11.090
  • Led Zeppelin ain't never seen anything like this.
  • 00:15:11.100 --> 00:15:13.150
  • I mean, it is out--it goes on, and on, and on,
  • 00:15:13.160 --> 00:15:16.100
  • and on with gyrations, and shouts, and moanings,
  • 00:15:16.110 --> 00:15:19.270
  • and confessions, and flips, and acrobatics,
  • 00:15:19.280 --> 00:15:23.290
  • and bleeding, and sighing, and everything went on.
  • 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:28.140
  • I mean, you can imagine, and it went on for about
  • 00:15:28.150 --> 00:15:31.120
  • seven or eight hours.
  • 00:15:31.130 --> 00:15:34.200
  • And finally, no one paid attention.
  • 00:15:34.210 --> 00:15:40.210
  • Can't you see 850 of 'em just sort of, "Pfft," spend,
  • 00:15:41.060 --> 00:15:46.100
  • out, exhausted?
  • 00:15:46.110 --> 00:15:50.220
  • But one thing had been established,
  • 00:15:50.230 --> 00:15:53.280
  • Baal's not god, right?
  • 00:15:53.290 --> 00:15:57.230
  • People saw that.
  • 00:15:57.240 --> 00:15:59.270
  • Look at the contrast of Jehovah worship, verse 38.
  • 00:15:59.280 --> 00:16:03.070
  • "Then Elijah said to all the people, 'Come near to me,' so
  • 00:16:03.080 --> 00:16:06.280
  • all the people came near to him and he prepared the altar of the
  • 00:16:06.290 --> 00:16:10.170
  • Lord which had been torn down."
  • 00:16:10.180 --> 00:16:12.170
  • Verse 31, "Elijah took 12 stones according to the number of the
  • 00:16:12.180 --> 00:16:16.050
  • tribes of the sons of Israel, to whom the word of the Lord
  • 00:16:16.060 --> 00:16:19.060
  • had come, saying, 'Israel shall be your name.'"
  • 00:16:19.070 --> 00:16:21.190
  • Verse 32, "So, with the stones, he built an altar in the name of
  • 00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:25.010
  • the Lord, and he made a trench around the altar large enough
  • 00:16:25.020 --> 00:16:28.040
  • to hold two measures of seed.
  • 00:16:28.050 --> 00:16:30.210
  • Then he arranged the wood and cut the ox in pieces
  • 00:16:30.220 --> 00:16:35.050
  • and laid it on the wood."
  • 00:16:35.060 --> 00:16:36.180
  • Verse 34, "And he said, 'Fill four pitchers,'"
  • 00:16:36.190 --> 00:16:39.290
  • literally it's barrels, "With water, and pour it on the burnt
  • 00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:42.290
  • offering and on the wood, and he said, 'Do it a second time,'
  • 00:16:43.000 --> 00:16:45.190
  • and the did it a second time.
  • 00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:46.260
  • And he said, 'Do it a third time,' and they did it a third
  • 00:16:46.270 --> 00:16:49.030
  • time, and the water flowed around the altar and it also
  • 00:16:49.040 --> 00:16:53.100
  • filled the trench with water."
  • 00:16:53.110 --> 00:16:55.090
  • Somebody said, "Now, wait a minute, you mean there was
  • 00:16:55.100 --> 00:16:57.110
  • a drought, they didn't have any water?
  • 00:16:57.120 --> 00:17:01.250
  • People were starving to death, people were dying from thirst
  • 00:17:01.260 --> 00:17:05.040
  • and a lack of food, and now they take full barrels of water,
  • 00:17:05.050 --> 00:17:09.000
  • three different times, and fill up this trench?
  • 00:17:09.010 --> 00:17:11.100
  • Oh, you see the inconsistency in the Bible?"
  • 00:17:11.110 --> 00:17:15.210
  • Wait a minute, where is Carmel?
  • 00:17:15.220 --> 00:17:19.260
  • On the Mediterranean.
  • 00:17:19.270 --> 00:17:22.140
  • This wasn't fresh water, it was salt water, and it took a while
  • 00:17:22.150 --> 00:17:26.000
  • for people to go down, but they brought it back up, and boy
  • 00:17:26.010 --> 00:17:29.020
  • scout 101 will teach you, you put out a fire with fresh water,
  • 00:17:29.030 --> 00:17:32.090
  • that's fine, you put it out with salt water and it is out.
  • 00:17:32.100 --> 00:17:38.080
  • Salt water, not drinking water.
  • 00:17:38.090 --> 00:17:42.250
  • Thought you had me, didn't you?
  • 00:17:42.260 --> 00:17:47.210
  • Verse 36, "At the time of the offering, they evening
  • 00:17:47.220 --> 00:17:50.030
  • sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said,
  • 00:17:50.040 --> 00:17:52.280
  • 'O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,'"
  • 00:17:52.290 --> 00:17:56.140
  • you see, he's making the Lord who made a contract with
  • 00:17:56.150 --> 00:17:59.240
  • Abraham, the Lord who had a compact with Isaac,
  • 00:17:59.250 --> 00:18:03.290
  • the Lord of God who had an agreement with Israel.
  • 00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:07.030
  • See, he's bringing back the covenant to their mind
  • 00:18:07.040 --> 00:18:10.250
  • as to who they are and where they come from.
  • 00:18:10.260 --> 00:18:13.240
  • He said, "Today, let it be known for you are God in Israel that I
  • 00:18:13.250 --> 00:18:17.130
  • am your servant and I have done all these things at your word,"
  • 00:18:17.140 --> 00:18:21.110
  • and he prays, "Answer me, O Lord, answer me that this people
  • 00:18:21.120 --> 00:18:24.290
  • may know that you, O God, are God, and that you have turned
  • 00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:28.270
  • their heart back again."
  • 00:18:28.280 --> 00:18:30.270
  • You have got back in a covenant relationship with the living
  • 00:18:30.280 --> 00:18:34.020
  • God, that was his prayer.
  • 00:18:34.030 --> 00:18:38.180
  • Oh, and look at what happened.
  • 00:18:38.190 --> 00:18:41.290
  • "Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering,
  • 00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:45.270
  • and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up
  • 00:18:45.280 --> 00:18:48.180
  • the water that was in the trench.
  • 00:18:48.190 --> 00:18:50.070
  • When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and they
  • 00:18:50.080 --> 00:18:54.120
  • said, 'The Lord, he is God, the Lord, he is God.'"
  • 00:18:54.130 --> 00:18:59.020
  • Now, in the beginning, Elijah said,
  • 00:18:59.030 --> 00:19:01.230
  • "Choose God or choose Baal," the people didn't answer a word.
  • 00:19:01.240 --> 00:19:06.100
  • Now, the fire fell and consumed the stones, the sacrifice,
  • 00:19:06.110 --> 00:19:11.170
  • the water, everything in the area.
  • 00:19:11.180 --> 00:19:13.230
  • Lightening came down, and now the said, flat on their faces,
  • 00:19:13.240 --> 00:19:17.050
  • "The Lord, he is God.
  • 00:19:17.060 --> 00:19:18.260
  • The Lord, he is God."
  • 00:19:18.270 --> 00:19:20.050
  • And then, look at the follow through to this, it's the most
  • 00:19:20.060 --> 00:19:23.260
  • important part of the Scripture, and I missed it for many years.
  • 00:19:23.270 --> 00:19:27.190
  • Verse 40, "Then Elijah said to them,
  • 00:19:27.200 --> 00:19:29.240
  • 'Seize the prophets of Baal.
  • 00:19:29.250 --> 00:19:31.170
  • Do not let one of them escape.'
  • 00:19:31.180 --> 00:19:33.250
  • So, the seized them and Elijah brought them down to the brook
  • 00:19:33.260 --> 00:19:36.210
  • Kishon," remember, at the foot of the mountain,
  • 00:19:36.220 --> 00:19:39.040
  • "And slew them there."
  • 00:19:39.050 --> 00:19:40.140
  • Uh-oh, somebody said, "Well, this is Old Testament, the
  • 00:19:40.150 --> 00:19:44.080
  • people grabbed all those 850 phony prophets,
  • 00:19:44.090 --> 00:19:47.270
  • took them down the mountain, and Elijah took a sword
  • 00:19:47.280 --> 00:19:51.010
  • and killed every one of them.
  • 00:19:51.020 --> 00:19:52.250
  • See how bloody and brutal the Old Testament is?"
  • 00:19:52.260 --> 00:19:55.100
  • Let me tell you something, in Old Testament law,
  • 00:19:55.110 --> 00:20:00.230
  • extant in this day, those guilty of idolatry
  • 00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:06.100
  • was punished by death.
  • 00:20:06.110 --> 00:20:08.060
  • They were punished by death, okay.
  • 00:20:08.070 --> 00:20:12.210
  • These 850 were demonic people.
  • 00:20:12.220 --> 00:20:16.080
  • They had led people down paths that led them straight into the
  • 00:20:16.090 --> 00:20:20.090
  • pit, and the sin dealt with radically is sin
  • 00:20:20.100 --> 00:20:26.100
  • dealt with effectively.
  • 00:20:26.200 --> 00:20:28.020
  • You don't just say, "Lord, forgive me of this sin.
  • 00:20:28.030 --> 00:20:31.270
  • Lord, just--"
  • 00:20:31.280 --> 00:20:33.020
  • let me tell you, sin in your life has to be killed.
  • 00:20:33.030 --> 00:20:36.210
  • That Baal in your life, man, my Baal may be pleasure,
  • 00:20:36.220 --> 00:20:40.030
  • your Baal might be applause, all these Baals in our life,
  • 00:20:40.040 --> 00:20:45.110
  • we can't say, "Lord, I see that little Baal,
  • 00:20:45.120 --> 00:20:47.010
  • I'm giving it priority, that hobby I have,
  • 00:20:47.020 --> 00:20:49.210
  • that goal that I have, that relationship I have,"
  • 00:20:49.220 --> 00:20:52.240
  • oh, no, you don't just get rid of those easily, you
  • 00:20:52.250 --> 00:20:55.030
  • have to take those Baals that are now in the central part of
  • 00:20:55.040 --> 00:20:58.130
  • your life and my life, and we have to give 'em
  • 00:20:58.140 --> 00:21:00.220
  • to the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit has to kill them.
  • 00:21:00.230 --> 00:21:05.230
  • You have to kill these Baals.
  • 00:21:05.240 --> 00:21:08.210
  • They don't go away easily.
  • 00:21:08.220 --> 00:21:10.230
  • Sin dealt with effectively is sin dealt with radically.
  • 00:21:10.240 --> 00:21:13.260
  • And that is what you see here with these demonic people.
  • 00:21:13.270 --> 00:21:16.240
  • By the way, you can go to the top of Mount Carmel,
  • 00:21:16.250 --> 00:21:18.260
  • I didn't do that the last few times I was there.
  • 00:21:18.270 --> 00:21:21.090
  • There's a statue of Elijah standing there to this day.
  • 00:21:21.100 --> 00:21:23.290
  • In his hand, there is a sword, there's a sword.
  • 00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:30.000
  • So, look what happened, and then following this,
  • 00:21:31.150 --> 00:21:34.190
  • we have a scene even stranger than that which we've looked at.
  • 00:21:34.200 --> 00:21:40.080
  • Verse 41, "Now, Elijah said to Ahab,
  • 00:21:40.090 --> 00:21:42.120
  • 'Go up and eat and drink,'"
  • 00:21:42.130 --> 00:21:43.120
  • he knew that's all Ahab could handle.
  • 00:21:43.130 --> 00:21:44.270
  • He didn't understand spiritual things.
  • 00:21:44.280 --> 00:21:46.220
  • "Go up, eat and drink, Ahab," that's the king.
  • 00:21:46.230 --> 00:21:49.240
  • "For there is the sound of a roar of a heavy shower."
  • 00:21:49.250 --> 00:21:54.180
  • Elijah says, "There's the sound of the roar of a heavy shower."
  • 00:21:54.190 --> 00:21:59.290
  • Nobody heard it but Elijah.
  • 00:22:00.020 --> 00:22:01.180
  • The king didn't hear it, the people didn't hear it,
  • 00:22:01.190 --> 00:22:06.040
  • he's the only one that heard it.
  • 00:22:06.050 --> 00:22:08.190
  • The closer you get to God, the more you'll hear his softest
  • 00:22:08.200 --> 00:22:14.200
  • whisper, the closer you get to God.
  • 00:22:15.210 --> 00:22:19.270
  • And this was Elijah's faith.
  • 00:22:19.280 --> 00:22:23.160
  • What does Hebrews 1 tell us?
  • 00:22:23.170 --> 00:22:24.210
  • "Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the
  • 00:22:24.220 --> 00:22:29.030
  • evidence of things not seen."
  • 00:22:29.040 --> 00:22:30.260
  • He heard raindrops.
  • 00:22:30.270 --> 00:22:34.120
  • Nobody else heard them.
  • 00:22:34.130 --> 00:22:38.040
  • And then look what happened.
  • 00:22:38.050 --> 00:22:43.140
  • Latter part of verse 42, "He crouched down on the earth
  • 00:22:43.150 --> 00:22:46.220
  • and put his face between his knees."
  • 00:22:46.230 --> 00:22:48.130
  • Look what he did.
  • 00:22:48.140 --> 00:22:49.260
  • He got in a fetal position, Elijah.
  • 00:22:49.270 --> 00:22:53.190
  • He's not on top of the mountain.
  • 00:22:53.200 --> 00:22:55.000
  • All the people are celebrating, answered by fire, they're going
  • 00:22:55.010 --> 00:22:57.210
  • down off the mountain now.
  • 00:22:57.220 --> 00:22:59.020
  • He's not high-fiving, "Boy, we showed them,
  • 00:22:59.030 --> 00:23:01.110
  • what a victory today, three cheers."
  • 00:23:01.120 --> 00:23:03.210
  • Elijah's on top of the mountain, his head is down,
  • 00:23:03.220 --> 00:23:06.150
  • his head is in his knees, in his hands, he is praying.
  • 00:23:06.160 --> 00:23:12.160
  • What's going on here?
  • 00:23:13.240 --> 00:23:15.080
  • He's praying on top of Mount Carmel, fetal position.
  • 00:23:15.090 --> 00:23:21.090
  • He tells his servant, "Go out to the Mediterranean,
  • 00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:26.000
  • see if you see any sign of rain."
  • 00:23:26.010 --> 00:23:29.080
  • The man goes out, comes back, he said, "Not a sign of rain."
  • 00:23:29.090 --> 00:23:33.260
  • He's still praying, "Go look again."
  • 00:23:33.270 --> 00:23:37.040
  • "Nothing," "Go look again." "Nothing, "Go look again."
  • 00:23:37.050 --> 00:23:40.140
  • "Nothing, "Go look again."
  • 00:23:40.150 --> 00:23:41.230
  • "Nothing, "Go look again." "Nothing, "Go look again."
  • 00:23:41.240 --> 00:23:44.080
  • "Nothing," and seven times he looked over the Mediterranean,
  • 00:23:44.090 --> 00:23:48.020
  • not a cloud in the sky.
  • 00:23:48.030 --> 00:23:49.280
  • Elijah's praying, then the seventh time, Elijah said,
  • 00:23:49.290 --> 00:23:55.050
  • "Go and look," and the man said, "Way in the distance over
  • 00:23:55.060 --> 00:23:59.090
  • the Mediterranean, I see a cloud like a little hand."
  • 00:23:59.100 --> 00:24:03.270
  • And Elijah said, "We better get off this mountain, there's gonna
  • 00:24:03.280 --> 00:24:09.280
  • be showers, and showers of blessing coming down
  • 00:24:11.080 --> 00:24:16.020
  • over the land."
  • 00:24:16.030 --> 00:24:18.040
  • Can you imagine the people walking down the mountain?
  • 00:24:18.050 --> 00:24:21.080
  • They're walking down, man, they're odd, they'd seen fire
  • 00:24:21.090 --> 00:24:23.250
  • from heaven, and then, all of a sudden, they think,
  • 00:24:23.260 --> 00:24:26.080
  • "Where's the rain?"
  • 00:24:26.090 --> 00:24:27.180
  • And then, it begins to sprinkle and it begins to rain.
  • 00:24:27.190 --> 00:24:33.050
  • And they know they're worshiping the real God now.
  • 00:24:34.020 --> 00:24:37.170
  • They're back in relationship with him.
  • 00:24:37.180 --> 00:24:41.060
  • The covenant has been reestablished, and it's raining.
  • 00:24:41.070 --> 00:24:45.080
  • The windows of heaven is open, and it's raining.
  • 00:24:45.090 --> 00:24:48.080
  • Can't you imagine the excitement of the people as they went
  • 00:24:48.090 --> 00:24:51.190
  • down that mountain?
  • 00:24:51.200 --> 00:24:57.200
  • Does anybody here need some showers of blessing
  • 00:24:58.030 --> 00:25:00.190
  • on your life?
  • 00:25:00.200 --> 00:25:02.010
  • Anybody here need a shower of blessing?
  • 00:25:02.020 --> 00:25:04.170
  • Sure we do. How does it come?
  • 00:25:04.180 --> 00:25:08.110
  • Exactly the way it happened on Mount Carmel, exactly the way.
  • 00:25:08.120 --> 00:25:13.240
  • There's repentance, there's confession, we begin to live a
  • 00:25:13.250 --> 00:25:17.090
  • life of obedience, living one day at a time, totally dependent
  • 00:25:17.100 --> 00:25:20.170
  • upon him, and we confess our sin, we turn from our sin,
  • 00:25:20.180 --> 00:25:24.140
  • there's restitution, and we get back into a covenant
  • 00:25:24.150 --> 00:25:27.270
  • relationship with God in Jesus Christ, and look out,
  • 00:25:27.280 --> 00:25:31.010
  • there's showers of blessing coming on that life.
  • 00:25:31.020 --> 00:25:35.210
  • Not before, but after.
  • 00:25:35.220 --> 00:25:40.000
  • So, the choice is clear today for us as it was for the people
  • 00:25:40.010 --> 00:25:43.090
  • in that day, and it's this.
  • 00:25:43.100 --> 00:25:46.240
  • It's a cold, clear choice, choose Christ and go to heaven,
  • 00:25:46.250 --> 00:25:52.250
  • beginning right now.
  • 00:25:57.130 --> 00:26:00.030
  • Choose Baal and go to hell, beginning right now.
  • 00:26:00.040 --> 00:26:06.040
  • That is always the choice.
  • 00:26:11.070 --> 00:26:15.160
  • male announcer: Our lives go through many seasons.
  • 00:26:19.040 --> 00:26:21.120
  • There are times of confidence and joy, and there are times
  • 00:26:21.130 --> 00:26:24.230
  • of doubt and desperation.
  • 00:26:24.240 --> 00:26:27.010
  • Despite these changing seasons, how can we make sure
  • 00:26:27.020 --> 00:26:30.100
  • that we're living the life God wants for us?
  • 00:26:30.110 --> 00:26:33.090
  • In his series, "Elijah, Truth for All Seasons,"
  • 00:26:33.100 --> 00:26:37.030
  • Dr. Young leads us through the life of the prophet Elijah,
  • 00:26:37.040 --> 00:26:40.130
  • a great man of God who stood for truth
  • 00:26:40.140 --> 00:26:43.020
  • in the face of a pagan king and an idolatrous nation.
  • 00:26:43.030 --> 00:26:46.250
  • However, like may of us today, he faced anxiety, burnout,
  • 00:26:46.260 --> 00:26:51.000
  • and depression.
  • 00:26:51.010 --> 00:26:52.260
  • Despite his weakness, God used Elijah in mighty ways.
  • 00:26:52.270 --> 00:26:56.020
  • In this series, you'll discover how God works out his purposes
  • 00:26:56.030 --> 00:26:59.240
  • even in times of deep despair, and how he can do that
  • 00:26:59.250 --> 00:27:02.260
  • in your life too.
  • 00:27:02.270 --> 00:27:05.030

  • 00:27:39.170 --> 00:27:44.080
  • of pleasing the world while still trying to please him.
  • 00:27:44.090 --> 00:27:48.020

  • 00:27:51.070 --> 00:27:55.220
