  • 00:00:00.100 --> 00:00:00.110
  • 00:00:00.110 --> 00:00:00.120
  • 00:00:00.120 --> 00:00:00.130
  • 00:00:00.130 --> 00:00:00.140
  • 00:00:00.140 --> 00:00:10.050
  • 00:00:10.060 --> 00:00:17.190
  • Dr. Ed Young: I'm from Mississippi and I love
  • 00:00:21.010 --> 00:00:22.100
  • the name of a little town there called Soso.
  • 00:00:22.110 --> 00:00:27.080
  • S-O-S-O.
  • 00:00:27.090 --> 00:00:31.000
  • It's interesting how it's--how that town got its name.
  • 00:00:31.010 --> 00:00:34.070
  • It's still a little community of,
  • 00:00:34.080 --> 00:00:35.230
  • I don't know, maybe a couple or three thousand people,
  • 00:00:35.240 --> 00:00:38.060
  • and when they were building the railroad they sent a group ahead
  • 00:00:38.070 --> 00:00:42.050
  • to find a place where they could make a camp.
  • 00:00:42.060 --> 00:00:46.160
  • And they had certain things they looked for: water,
  • 00:00:46.170 --> 00:00:49.150
  • grass areas, grassy areas they could feed their animals,
  • 00:00:49.160 --> 00:00:54.080
  • forest, little mountain area that'd be shelter there.
  • 00:00:54.090 --> 00:00:59.090
  • They looked for certain things, and when they sent this group
  • 00:00:59.100 --> 00:01:02.050
  • back, they said, "Have you found the place?"
  • 00:01:02.060 --> 00:01:05.000
  • And they said, "We found a place and it has some water,
  • 00:01:05.010 --> 00:01:08.070
  • but not enough.
  • 00:01:08.080 --> 00:01:09.170
  • It has some shelter, but not what we'd expect.
  • 00:01:09.180 --> 00:01:11.230
  • It has some wonderful timber, but really
  • 00:01:11.240 --> 00:01:14.210
  • there's not an expanse.
  • 00:01:14.220 --> 00:01:16.050
  • This place we found to build the camp is just so-so."
  • 00:01:16.060 --> 00:01:22.040
  • Doesn't quite measure up, not totally inadequate,
  • 00:01:22.050 --> 00:01:26.140
  • not totally adequate, but just so-so.
  • 00:01:26.150 --> 00:01:31.280
  • Now, imagine if you were born and raised in Soso.
  • 00:01:31.290 --> 00:01:35.250
  • I still have relatives, distant relatives who live there.
  • 00:01:35.260 --> 00:01:38.170
  • If I were to try to understand your life,
  • 00:01:38.180 --> 00:01:41.150
  • I'd have to go back and see your background,
  • 00:01:41.160 --> 00:01:43.230
  • the community, your family, your education,
  • 00:01:43.240 --> 00:01:46.170
  • your whole experience, the Soso experience, right?
  • 00:01:46.180 --> 00:01:50.040
  • To understand you.
  • 00:01:50.050 --> 00:01:53.140
  • By the same token, if you were born in New York,
  • 00:01:53.150 --> 00:01:55.270
  • New York, let's say brought up in the Bronx,
  • 00:01:55.280 --> 00:01:59.100
  • educated in the most cosmopolitan,
  • 00:01:59.110 --> 00:02:02.090
  • erudite, affluent city perhaps on this earth,
  • 00:02:02.100 --> 00:02:08.040
  • to understand you, I'd have to understand your background,
  • 00:02:08.050 --> 00:02:11.250
  • your rearing there in New York, New York.
  • 00:02:11.260 --> 00:02:16.000
  • Now, what is the point?
  • 00:02:16.010 --> 00:02:18.280
  • Somebody who's brought up in Soso,
  • 00:02:18.290 --> 00:02:21.260
  • to understand them, you'd have to understand their history.
  • 00:02:21.270 --> 00:02:25.160
  • Someone who was brought up in New York,
  • 00:02:25.170 --> 00:02:28.160
  • to understand them, you'd have to understand their history.
  • 00:02:28.170 --> 00:02:33.080
  • In other words, you cannot take anybody out of the context of
  • 00:02:33.090 --> 00:02:38.030
  • their life and have any reading of what they're
  • 00:02:38.040 --> 00:02:43.150
  • about and who they are.
  • 00:02:43.160 --> 00:02:46.210
  • The old question, does history make the man
  • 00:02:46.220 --> 00:02:49.180
  • or does the man make history?
  • 00:02:49.190 --> 00:02:56.030
  • The answer to that is both, both, both.
  • 00:02:56.040 --> 00:03:06.050
  • And so, we come to study Elijah, and a lot of us get confused
  • 00:03:06.060 --> 00:03:10.240
  • when we study this book.
  • 00:03:10.250 --> 00:03:13.090
  • And the reason we do, we read these chapters,
  • 00:03:13.100 --> 00:03:16.060
  • you may have read them in 1 Kings and said,
  • 00:03:16.070 --> 00:03:18.100
  • "What in the world is going on?
  • 00:03:18.110 --> 00:03:20.170
  • I don't understand this. I don't understand that."
  • 00:03:20.180 --> 00:03:22.260
  • The many times we do not understand the Scripture
  • 00:03:22.270 --> 00:03:26.070
  • is because we do not know the history,
  • 00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:29.060
  • the context of that life or that event.
  • 00:03:29.070 --> 00:03:33.120
  • You got it?
  • 00:03:33.130 --> 00:03:34.250
  • You could not understand much of the Bible unless you know the
  • 00:03:34.260 --> 00:03:37.260
  • context of what is going on.
  • 00:03:37.270 --> 00:03:41.030
  • So, it's important that we understand the historical
  • 00:03:41.040 --> 00:03:45.080
  • context of this man Elijah before we look at his life.
  • 00:03:45.090 --> 00:03:50.130
  • Now, most of us know that Israel had three kings:
  • 00:03:50.140 --> 00:03:56.110
  • Saul, David, Solomon.
  • 00:03:56.120 --> 00:04:01.170
  • Each one had their own unique weaknesses,
  • 00:04:01.180 --> 00:04:04.070
  • but the one who really brought the kingdom down was Solomon.
  • 00:04:04.080 --> 00:04:08.150
  • His life story is a fabulous beginning and a tragic ending.
  • 00:04:08.160 --> 00:04:16.170
  • That's the reason many times you hear people say,
  • 00:04:16.180 --> 00:04:19.140
  • "You finish strong."
  • 00:04:19.150 --> 00:04:23.260
  • This is where you are with God, but finish strong.
  • 00:04:23.270 --> 00:04:28.290
  • Solomon did not finish strong.
  • 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:32.040
  • Many things brought his downfall.
  • 00:04:32.050 --> 00:04:35.060
  • Foremost would be the fact he, to engage in political
  • 00:04:35.070 --> 00:04:39.060
  • alliances, he married all kinds of foreign women who brought
  • 00:04:39.070 --> 00:04:44.040
  • all of their idols and all their Paganism into Israel.
  • 00:04:44.050 --> 00:04:48.130
  • And Solomon tolerated that, and therefore
  • 00:04:48.140 --> 00:04:52.200
  • when Solomon died, the kingdom divided.
  • 00:04:52.210 --> 00:04:57.020
  • Now, by the way, to understand the Bible,
  • 00:04:57.030 --> 00:05:00.090
  • the Old Testament, you have to understand what I'm saying and
  • 00:05:00.100 --> 00:05:03.210
  • remember it, because suddenly things you didn't
  • 00:05:03.220 --> 00:05:06.270
  • quite comprehend will fit perfectly.
  • 00:05:06.280 --> 00:05:10.100
  • So, here we have the three kings.
  • 00:05:10.110 --> 00:05:12.130
  • About a hundred years plus they ruled.
  • 00:05:12.140 --> 00:05:15.170
  • Then you have the death of Solomon.
  • 00:05:15.180 --> 00:05:17.180
  • The kingdom is divided into the northern kingdom,
  • 00:05:17.190 --> 00:05:21.150
  • which is still called Israel, and the southern kingdom
  • 00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:25.120
  • that is called Judah, and Jerusalem is a part of that.
  • 00:05:25.130 --> 00:05:29.100
  • Now, in the northern kingdom existed for about 200 years
  • 00:05:29.110 --> 00:05:34.110
  • and they had 19 different rulers.
  • 00:05:34.120 --> 00:05:37.280
  • And according to the Bible, every one of them did what
  • 00:05:37.290 --> 00:05:41.220
  • was evil in the sight of God.
  • 00:05:41.230 --> 00:05:45.240
  • Every one of them godless, pagan,
  • 00:05:45.250 --> 00:05:49.070
  • demonic, profane, bottomed out.
  • 00:05:49.080 --> 00:05:54.210
  • Nineteen rulers over 200 years, until finally in 722 B.C.,
  • 00:05:54.220 --> 00:06:03.180
  • the Assyrians came in and took out the
  • 00:06:03.190 --> 00:06:07.180
  • northern kingdom, ceased to exist.
  • 00:06:07.190 --> 00:06:11.050
  • The southern kingdom existed for about 300 years.
  • 00:06:11.060 --> 00:06:15.270
  • They had 17 kings.
  • 00:06:15.280 --> 00:06:20.010
  • Nine were bad, eight were good.
  • 00:06:20.020 --> 00:06:25.110
  • And so, in the southern kingdom of Judah,
  • 00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:29.030
  • it wasn't until 586 B.C.
  • 00:06:29.040 --> 00:06:31.240
  • the Babylonians came down.
  • 00:06:31.250 --> 00:06:33.140
  • Remember the Babylonian captivity?
  • 00:06:33.150 --> 00:06:35.080
  • And they took most of the Israelites,
  • 00:06:35.090 --> 00:06:38.000
  • at least the better part of the population,
  • 00:06:38.010 --> 00:06:40.150
  • into exile into Babylon.
  • 00:06:40.160 --> 00:06:44.070
  • This lasted for 60 or 70 years, and then you have
  • 00:06:44.080 --> 00:06:49.200
  • Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel coming back,
  • 00:06:49.210 --> 00:06:54.050
  • bringing some Israelites with them,
  • 00:06:54.060 --> 00:06:57.120
  • gathering the Jews who had remained,
  • 00:06:57.130 --> 00:06:59.200
  • and they rebuilt the temple.
  • 00:06:59.210 --> 00:07:01.140
  • It was sort of a one-horse temple
  • 00:07:01.150 --> 00:07:03.050
  • compared to the Temple of Solomon.
  • 00:07:03.060 --> 00:07:05.120
  • And they reestablished monotheism and worship
  • 00:07:05.130 --> 00:07:08.270
  • of Jehovah, the true and living God.
  • 00:07:08.280 --> 00:07:13.180
  • Now, you got that? That's very important.
  • 00:07:13.190 --> 00:07:19.080
  • You can't understand Elijah until you understand that,
  • 00:07:19.090 --> 00:07:22.250
  • bam, right in the middle of the divided kingdom,
  • 00:07:22.260 --> 00:07:25.180
  • the southern kingdom and northern kingdom,
  • 00:07:25.190 --> 00:07:27.160
  • when they'd had decades of godless people leading them
  • 00:07:27.170 --> 00:07:31.190
  • further and further into Paganism.
  • 00:07:31.200 --> 00:07:34.000
  • There was murder. There was incest.
  • 00:07:34.010 --> 00:07:36.230
  • There was violence. There was revolution.
  • 00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:40.210
  • There was deception.
  • 00:07:40.220 --> 00:07:42.040
  • I mean, you want to write down every kind of tragic,
  • 00:07:42.050 --> 00:07:46.210
  • heinous thing going on, that would depict the northern
  • 00:07:46.220 --> 00:07:51.050
  • and southern kingdom most of this period of time.
  • 00:07:51.060 --> 00:07:55.220
  • And guess what?
  • 00:07:55.230 --> 00:07:58.100
  • God says to Elijah, "Psst, hey, I want you to go
  • 00:07:58.110 --> 00:08:04.280
  • and speak a Word for me."
  • 00:08:04.290 --> 00:08:07.220
  • Elijah could've said, "You know, don't you
  • 00:08:07.230 --> 00:08:09.260
  • have some other people?"
  • 00:08:09.270 --> 00:08:11.090
  • God said, "Yeah, I have 7.000 of 'em and they're hiding in caves
  • 00:08:11.100 --> 00:08:15.240
  • because they know if they show their face and speak of Jehovah,
  • 00:08:15.250 --> 00:08:18.220
  • the true and living God, in the middle of all the Paganism and
  • 00:08:18.230 --> 00:08:24.080
  • decadence, they would be instantly killed.
  • 00:08:24.090 --> 00:08:28.290
  • Because who was on the throne of the northern kingdom now?
  • 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:33.150
  • You read in the 16th chapter there was a guy named Omri,
  • 00:08:33.160 --> 00:08:37.130
  • O-M-R-I, and it says he was the worst king yet in the history
  • 00:08:37.140 --> 00:08:44.040
  • of the northern kingdom.
  • 00:08:44.050 --> 00:08:45.170
  • And he had a boy by the name of Ahab,
  • 00:08:45.180 --> 00:08:48.070
  • and it says he was worse than his daddy.
  • 00:08:48.080 --> 00:08:52.260
  • I mean, it's like, man, here is Adolf Hitler,
  • 00:08:52.270 --> 00:08:56.040
  • and gosh, Mao follows him, and then Idi Amin comes after him,
  • 00:08:56.050 --> 00:09:03.170
  • then Osama comes after him.
  • 00:09:03.180 --> 00:09:06.070
  • It's getting worse, and worse, and worse.
  • 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:09.090
  • And finally Ahab, he gets married and he marries a
  • 00:09:09.100 --> 00:09:13.060
  • woman that we all know her name.
  • 00:09:13.070 --> 00:09:15.290
  • There we have Jezebel. Anybody here named Jezebel?
  • 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:23.160
  • Oh, only two. No, no, no.
  • 00:09:23.170 --> 00:09:26.160
  • Jezebel has come over into the 21st century and we know.
  • 00:09:26.170 --> 00:09:30.020
  • We say, "Boy, she's a Jezebel."
  • 00:09:30.030 --> 00:09:33.110
  • Incidentally, this is the first time this far in all the kings
  • 00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:38.130
  • that the wife's name is even mentioned.
  • 00:09:38.140 --> 00:09:41.270
  • Jezebel's the first one.
  • 00:09:41.280 --> 00:09:43.160
  • Why would that be?
  • 00:09:43.170 --> 00:09:45.080
  • Jezebel was the daughter of the King of Sidon,
  • 00:09:45.090 --> 00:09:49.000
  • and she worshiped Baal.
  • 00:09:49.010 --> 00:09:52.280
  • And Baal's mother was Asherah in all the pagan mythology and
  • 00:09:52.290 --> 00:09:59.250
  • lore, and therefore she brought Baal worship.
  • 00:09:59.260 --> 00:10:04.140
  • She brought Asherah worship.
  • 00:10:04.150 --> 00:10:07.040
  • And what happened, now Israel was involved in sexual
  • 00:10:07.050 --> 00:10:10.100
  • promiscuity and idolatry.
  • 00:10:10.110 --> 00:10:15.070
  • Let me tell you something.
  • 00:10:15.080 --> 00:10:16.210
  • Any time there's sexual promiscuity,
  • 00:10:16.220 --> 00:10:19.100
  • idolatry immediately comes.
  • 00:10:19.110 --> 00:10:21.270
  • Has to, has to.
  • 00:10:21.280 --> 00:10:23.270
  • I've never had anybody say to me,
  • 00:10:23.280 --> 00:10:26.020
  • you say, "What's your problem?"
  • 00:10:26.030 --> 00:10:28.030
  • "Well, I'm guilty of idolatry."
  • 00:10:28.040 --> 00:10:30.050
  • Never had that confessed to me.
  • 00:10:30.060 --> 00:10:32.070
  • You ever heard that--he might have said,
  • 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:33.170
  • "I'm guilty, but we're guilty of idolatry.
  • 00:10:33.180 --> 00:10:35.150
  • America's--" anything we put in the place of the living God,
  • 00:10:35.160 --> 00:10:41.020
  • any person, any thing ahead of God and give this thing or this
  • 00:10:41.030 --> 00:10:45.230
  • person preeminence, that things becomes idolatrous.
  • 00:10:45.240 --> 00:10:50.110
  • Football can become idolatrous.
  • 00:10:50.120 --> 00:10:53.040
  • Your wife can become idolatrous.
  • 00:10:53.050 --> 00:10:55.100
  • Your kids can become idolatrous.
  • 00:10:55.110 --> 00:10:57.130
  • Your vocation can become--a lot of things can become idolatrous.
  • 00:10:57.140 --> 00:11:02.160
  • And when we move into sexual promiscuity,
  • 00:11:02.170 --> 00:11:05.040
  • we can't continue to worship a true and living God.
  • 00:11:05.050 --> 00:11:08.040
  • We have to move in the place idols,
  • 00:11:08.050 --> 00:11:10.230
  • pagan gods, not the purity of the living God.
  • 00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:14.070
  • This is what happened to Israel.
  • 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:16.190
  • And so, we have Ahab on the throne.
  • 00:11:16.200 --> 00:11:19.260
  • We have Jezebel, his wife. We'll hear about her again.
  • 00:11:19.270 --> 00:11:22.140
  • And she is mentioned because she dominated the kingdom.
  • 00:11:22.150 --> 00:11:27.210
  • Ahab was a figurehead bad enough in his own right,
  • 00:11:27.220 --> 00:11:30.140
  • but it was Jezebel.
  • 00:11:30.150 --> 00:11:34.060
  • Man, she was tough, mean, vicious.
  • 00:11:34.070 --> 00:11:40.010
  • The perfect mother-in-law.
  • 00:11:40.020 --> 00:11:42.180
  • No, no, no. This is Jezebel.
  • 00:11:42.190 --> 00:11:50.220
  • Now, onto this scene, we have a guy coming out of nowhere.
  • 00:11:50.230 --> 00:11:53.200
  • I mean, you talk about with no background, look at it.
  • 00:11:53.210 --> 00:11:56.280
  • 1 Kings 17, verse 1, "Now Elijah the Tishbite,
  • 00:11:56.290 --> 00:12:02.240
  • who was of the settlers of Gilead."
  • 00:12:02.250 --> 00:12:05.220
  • Now, Elijah, when he just barely appeared before King Ahab and he
  • 00:12:05.230 --> 00:12:13.050
  • introduced himself, and said, "What is your name?"
  • 00:12:13.060 --> 00:12:15.260
  • "I am Elijah," already there was,
  • 00:12:15.270 --> 00:12:18.030
  • "Ooh, ooh, ooh," by the king because his name.
  • 00:12:18.040 --> 00:12:22.270
  • "E-L" stands for Elohim, God.
  • 00:12:22.280 --> 00:12:26.250
  • "Jah," J-A-H, Jehovah.
  • 00:12:26.260 --> 00:12:30.190
  • An "I" in the middle meaning "my."
  • 00:12:30.200 --> 00:12:34.000
  • He was saying simply "My God is Jehovah."
  • 00:12:34.010 --> 00:12:40.080
  • That was enough for Ahab, just his name.
  • 00:12:40.090 --> 00:12:43.000
  • My God is Jehovah, the true God.
  • 00:12:43.010 --> 00:12:48.190
  • Then he said Elijah is from a Tishbite.
  • 00:12:48.200 --> 00:12:52.220
  • Nobody yet has found out where Tishba was.
  • 00:12:52.230 --> 00:12:56.280
  • A Tishbite, who is that?
  • 00:12:56.290 --> 00:12:59.120
  • I mean, nobody knows even to this day.
  • 00:12:59.130 --> 00:13:01.120
  • Archeologists, scholars, they've tried to find where was Tishba.
  • 00:13:01.130 --> 00:13:05.110
  • Nobody's found Tishba yet.
  • 00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:07.090
  • So, I mean, and also he was from Gilead.
  • 00:13:07.100 --> 00:13:10.100
  • We know where Gilead is.
  • 00:13:10.110 --> 00:13:11.210
  • It was a barren, rocky, tough, desolate place.
  • 00:13:11.220 --> 00:13:16.220
  • So Elijah appeared not with robes.
  • 00:13:16.230 --> 00:13:20.170
  • He would have appeared with the skins of animal,
  • 00:13:20.180 --> 00:13:23.080
  • with the stench of the outdoors about him,
  • 00:13:23.090 --> 00:13:26.150
  • rough, rugged, mountain guy, tough as steel.
  • 00:13:26.160 --> 00:13:32.080
  • So we know from his name where he comes from,
  • 00:13:32.090 --> 00:13:36.190
  • what he believes.
  • 00:13:36.200 --> 00:13:38.060
  • We know from his background what he's about.
  • 00:13:38.070 --> 00:13:41.080
  • And then we see something else about this man,
  • 00:13:41.090 --> 00:13:45.220
  • Elijah, we pick up in studying his life, his personality.
  • 00:13:45.230 --> 00:13:48.210
  • What kind of guy was he?
  • 00:13:48.220 --> 00:13:51.130
  • He was an in-your-face kinda guy.
  • 00:13:51.140 --> 00:13:55.230
  • I mean, pew.
  • 00:13:55.240 --> 00:13:58.000
  • Elijah didn't mince around, and beat around,
  • 00:13:58.010 --> 00:14:00.290
  • and sugar coat, and make it easy to--he just said,
  • 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:05.050
  • "Bam, this is it."
  • 00:14:05.060 --> 00:14:08.260
  • And we see that immediately as we study this man, Elijah.
  • 00:14:08.270 --> 00:14:12.200
  • We're going to see him as he speaks for God,
  • 00:14:12.210 --> 00:14:17.120
  • as he hides with God, and as he depends on God.
  • 00:14:17.130 --> 00:14:27.120
  • Watch this. Look as he speaks for God.
  • 00:14:27.130 --> 00:14:30.120
  • He said, "He said to Ahab, 'As the Lord,
  • 00:14:30.130 --> 00:14:33.270
  • the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand,
  • 00:14:33.280 --> 00:14:36.240
  • surely there shall be neither dew nor rain
  • 00:14:36.250 --> 00:14:40.190
  • these years, except by my word.'"
  • 00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:43.020
  • Anybody have trouble understanding that?
  • 00:14:43.030 --> 00:14:46.080
  • He said to Ahab, "There's not gonna be any dew,
  • 00:14:46.090 --> 00:14:50.070
  • there's not gonna be any rain until I say so."
  • 00:14:50.080 --> 00:14:56.190
  • Clear, isn't it? Clear.
  • 00:14:56.200 --> 00:15:00.050
  • And notice how he says, "As the Lord lives."
  • 00:15:00.060 --> 00:15:02.260
  • He went to the king, he said, "I'm not talking about
  • 00:15:02.270 --> 00:15:04.290
  • one of these dead idols.
  • 00:15:05.000 --> 00:15:06.090
  • I'm talking about the living God."
  • 00:15:06.100 --> 00:15:09.010
  • Let me ask you a question.
  • 00:15:09.020 --> 00:15:10.110
  • Is God really alive in your life?
  • 00:15:10.120 --> 00:15:13.090
  • Do you know God is living, God is moving,
  • 00:15:13.100 --> 00:15:15.070
  • God is operating, God is real?
  • 00:15:15.080 --> 00:15:17.190
  • That's where you begin.
  • 00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:20.040
  • He said, "As the Lord lives."
  • 00:15:20.050 --> 00:15:23.170
  • I'm worshiping a living God, not some grove,
  • 00:15:23.180 --> 00:15:25.150
  • some tree, some idol, some temple, some element.
  • 00:15:25.160 --> 00:15:30.100
  • I stand for the living God.
  • 00:15:30.110 --> 00:15:33.230
  • Then he says, "And here I stand."
  • 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:36.110
  • What's he saying?
  • 00:15:36.120 --> 00:15:37.280
  • "I'm God's representative. I'm God's spokesman."
  • 00:15:37.290 --> 00:15:42.030
  • And then he goes and he pronounces upon them
  • 00:15:42.040 --> 00:15:44.290
  • the Word of God.
  • 00:15:45.000 --> 00:15:46.110
  • He knew the Word of God.
  • 00:15:46.120 --> 00:15:47.270
  • Where did he get the idea that it wasn't gonna rain?
  • 00:15:47.280 --> 00:15:51.090
  • We know that it didn't rain for three and a half years.
  • 00:15:51.100 --> 00:15:54.110
  • Where'd he get that idea?
  • 00:15:54.120 --> 00:15:55.280
  • He found it right back--'cause he knew the Scripture.
  • 00:15:55.290 --> 00:15:58.100
  • In Deuteronomy chapter 11, listen, verse 16.
  • 00:15:58.110 --> 00:16:03.070
  • Deuteronomy 11:16, "Beware that your hearts are not deceived,
  • 00:16:03.080 --> 00:16:07.240
  • and that you do not turn away and serve other
  • 00:16:07.250 --> 00:16:10.170
  • gods and worship them."
  • 00:16:10.180 --> 00:16:12.070
  • That's what the people had done, hadn't they?
  • 00:16:12.080 --> 00:16:14.180
  • "Or the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you,
  • 00:16:14.190 --> 00:16:18.250
  • and he will shut up the heavens so that there will be no rain
  • 00:16:18.260 --> 00:16:22.270
  • and the ground will not yield its fruit;
  • 00:16:22.280 --> 00:16:26.050
  • and you will perish quickly from the good land which
  • 00:16:26.060 --> 00:16:29.040
  • the Lord is giving you."
  • 00:16:29.050 --> 00:16:31.070
  • What is Elijah saying?
  • 00:16:31.080 --> 00:16:32.170
  • He's saying, "That prophecy in Deuteronomy 11,
  • 00:16:32.180 --> 00:16:37.050
  • it's coming true.
  • 00:16:37.060 --> 00:16:39.090
  • It's not gonna rain, no dew, until I say so."
  • 00:16:39.100 --> 00:16:46.080
  • How profound would that be if someone stood today and said,
  • 00:16:46.090 --> 00:16:49.150
  • "I have a Word from God that there will be no oil coming out
  • 00:16:49.160 --> 00:16:54.120
  • of the ground until I say so"?
  • 00:16:54.130 --> 00:17:00.130
  • Let me tell you what would happen.
  • 00:17:00.140 --> 00:17:02.070
  • We would know in a couple of days.
  • 00:17:02.080 --> 00:17:04.020
  • You know, we have some oil, a little bit.
  • 00:17:04.030 --> 00:17:05.240
  • We have some gas.
  • 00:17:05.250 --> 00:17:07.040
  • And then about a week, about a month,
  • 00:17:07.050 --> 00:17:09.270
  • and all of us would be living in primitive
  • 00:17:09.280 --> 00:17:12.250
  • conditions just that quickly.
  • 00:17:12.260 --> 00:17:16.250
  • Just that quickly.
  • 00:17:16.260 --> 00:17:18.050
  • Don't misunderstand what I'm saying.
  • 00:17:18.060 --> 00:17:20.040
  • If I stood, "There will be no more oil produced until I say
  • 00:17:20.050 --> 00:17:23.190
  • so," and let that happen for three and a half years,
  • 00:17:23.200 --> 00:17:29.100
  • the world would be closed.
  • 00:17:29.110 --> 00:17:31.230
  • The world would go back to a kind of lifestyle that we knew
  • 00:17:31.240 --> 00:17:36.020
  • in the 1800s, literally.
  • 00:17:36.030 --> 00:17:41.150
  • So, I'm telling you, this got the attention of the King Ahab
  • 00:17:41.160 --> 00:17:46.150
  • as this man of God, this fearless prophet coming
  • 00:17:46.160 --> 00:17:50.160
  • out of the boondocks, Soso, Mississippi,
  • 00:17:50.170 --> 00:17:55.210
  • the backwoods.
  • 00:17:55.220 --> 00:17:58.000
  • And he stood there and said, "This is what will take place
  • 00:17:58.010 --> 00:18:02.000
  • as a judgment upon the godlessness of the land."
  • 00:18:02.010 --> 00:18:06.290
  • So, we see Elijah speaking for God
  • 00:18:07.000 --> 00:18:09.040
  • and then we see a strange verse here.
  • 00:18:09.050 --> 00:18:11.150
  • It sorta jumps out at you.
  • 00:18:11.160 --> 00:18:13.280
  • Verse number 2, "The Word of the Lord came to Elijah,
  • 00:18:13.290 --> 00:18:16.150
  • saying, 'Go away from here and turn eastward,
  • 00:18:16.160 --> 00:18:19.270
  • and hide yourself by the brook Cherith,
  • 00:18:19.280 --> 00:18:23.220
  • which is east of the Jordan.'"
  • 00:18:23.230 --> 00:18:27.190
  • Now, wait a minute.
  • 00:18:27.200 --> 00:18:30.020
  • Elijah must've thought, "I'm a palace guy.
  • 00:18:30.030 --> 00:18:34.230
  • I've been over there in nobody, nowhere long enough and I have
  • 00:18:34.240 --> 00:18:38.130
  • spoke on behalf of God to the king of the land.
  • 00:18:38.140 --> 00:18:42.210
  • Don't I need to go all over Israel and
  • 00:18:42.220 --> 00:18:44.240
  • tell everybody what's gonna happen?
  • 00:18:44.250 --> 00:18:46.100
  • There's not gonna be any rain because of all the evil the king
  • 00:18:46.110 --> 00:18:48.070
  • and everybody's doing."
  • 00:18:48.080 --> 00:18:49.200
  • He says, "I need to go on several crusades.
  • 00:18:49.210 --> 00:18:51.120
  • I'm a palace spokesman."
  • 00:18:51.130 --> 00:18:53.090
  • Listen, once you've been to Paris,
  • 00:18:53.100 --> 00:18:56.130
  • it's hard to go back to the farm.
  • 00:18:56.140 --> 00:19:00.040
  • "I'm a palace guy. I spoke for God.
  • 00:19:00.050 --> 00:19:03.280
  • I looked the king right in the eye.
  • 00:19:03.290 --> 00:19:06.050
  • I need to go tell the people what's going--"
  • 00:19:06.060 --> 00:19:08.160
  • and God says, "No, no, Elijah, go in hiding.
  • 00:19:08.170 --> 00:19:10.290
  • Go hide yourself." Whew, it's tough.
  • 00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:16.020
  • "Go to Cherith."
  • 00:19:16.030 --> 00:19:17.120
  • The word "Cherith" means to be cut off.
  • 00:19:17.130 --> 00:19:19.050
  • Cut yourself off from everybody.
  • 00:19:19.060 --> 00:19:20.240
  • He told Elijah to hide, why, for his protection?
  • 00:19:20.250 --> 00:19:26.030
  • And because God wanted to do something with Elijah that he
  • 00:19:26.040 --> 00:19:29.190
  • couldn't do as long as he was in the spotlight,
  • 00:19:29.200 --> 00:19:35.250
  • in the forefront, fighting his own battles.
  • 00:19:35.260 --> 00:19:40.230
  • Go hide yourself.
  • 00:19:40.240 --> 00:19:43.120
  • We see Elijah hiding with God, and then we see Elijah
  • 00:19:43.130 --> 00:19:46.230
  • depending on God.
  • 00:19:46.240 --> 00:19:49.110
  • Look what happens while he's in this Cherith,
  • 00:19:49.120 --> 00:19:52.120
  • cut off from everything and everybody.
  • 00:19:52.130 --> 00:19:54.150
  • Tremendous things happen.
  • 00:19:54.160 --> 00:19:56.050
  • Look what happens.
  • 00:19:56.060 --> 00:19:58.000
  • Verse 4, "'And it shall be with you--it shall be that you will
  • 00:19:58.010 --> 00:20:03.010
  • drink of the brook, I have commanded the ravens
  • 00:20:03.020 --> 00:20:05.230
  • to provide for you there.'
  • 00:20:05.240 --> 00:20:08.120
  • And so he went and did according to the Word of God."
  • 00:20:08.130 --> 00:20:10.230
  • He was obedient.
  • 00:20:10.240 --> 00:20:12.030
  • "For he went and lived by the book Cherith,
  • 00:20:12.040 --> 00:20:14.030
  • which is east of the Jordan."
  • 00:20:14.040 --> 00:20:15.270
  • Verse 6: "The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning
  • 00:20:15.280 --> 00:20:20.080
  • and bread and meat in the evening,
  • 00:20:20.090 --> 00:20:22.050
  • and he would drink from the brook."
  • 00:20:22.060 --> 00:20:23.220
  • Let me tell you something, that's something.
  • 00:20:23.230 --> 00:20:25.210
  • Here's a bubbling brook, cool water,
  • 00:20:25.220 --> 00:20:31.070
  • and the ravens, who were unclean birds,
  • 00:20:31.080 --> 00:20:33.170
  • God used them supernaturally to bring to him sandwiches in the
  • 00:20:33.180 --> 00:20:38.110
  • morning, meat and bread, and dip and
  • 00:20:38.120 --> 00:20:41.010
  • sandwiches every afternoon, meat and bread.
  • 00:20:41.020 --> 00:20:44.070
  • Bubbling brook, meat, and bread.
  • 00:20:44.080 --> 00:20:47.030
  • You see the bubbling brook would be natural and the
  • 00:20:47.040 --> 00:20:50.240
  • ravens bringing food would be supernatural.
  • 00:20:50.250 --> 00:20:54.270
  • You see, God sent Elijah there to hide himself to teach him
  • 00:20:54.280 --> 00:21:01.090
  • to be dependent on him.
  • 00:21:01.100 --> 00:21:06.030
  • Bubbling brook, room service in the morning,
  • 00:21:06.040 --> 00:21:10.240
  • room service in the evening, sleeping on grass,
  • 00:21:10.250 --> 00:21:13.100
  • protected from the animals because he
  • 00:21:13.110 --> 00:21:15.170
  • was in the will of God.
  • 00:21:15.180 --> 00:21:17.110
  • Boy, bubbling brook right there. Cool, clear water.
  • 00:21:17.120 --> 00:21:21.090
  • What a wonderful setting, Elijah learning to depend on God.
  • 00:21:21.100 --> 00:21:28.050
  • It's a beautiful story, isn't it?
  • 00:21:28.060 --> 00:21:30.080
  • Hide yourself.
  • 00:21:30.090 --> 00:21:32.120
  • Watch God provide for you.
  • 00:21:32.130 --> 00:21:34.070
  • Watch God look after you.
  • 00:21:34.080 --> 00:21:35.260
  • Watch God give this to you.
  • 00:21:35.270 --> 00:21:38.060
  • How we like bubbling brooks?
  • 00:21:38.070 --> 00:21:40.060
  • We all like bubbling brooks.
  • 00:21:40.070 --> 00:21:43.120
  • I'd like to go to Cherith this afternoon if there'd be
  • 00:21:43.130 --> 00:21:45.250
  • a bubbling brook and there would be,
  • 00:21:45.260 --> 00:21:48.020
  • you know, the ravens bringing food and meat to me twice a day.
  • 00:21:48.030 --> 00:21:52.040
  • You see, what happens to us though?
  • 00:21:52.050 --> 00:21:55.100
  • In that kind of environment of blessing,
  • 00:21:55.110 --> 00:21:57.120
  • suddenly we take that which is supernatural and we begin to
  • 00:21:57.130 --> 00:22:03.160
  • treat it as if it were natural.
  • 00:22:03.170 --> 00:22:07.120
  • You see, believers, we see God and then we see his blessings,
  • 00:22:07.130 --> 00:22:12.040
  • but so many people, we begin to see his blessings and we see
  • 00:22:12.050 --> 00:22:16.100
  • God only through his blessings instead
  • 00:22:16.110 --> 00:22:18.180
  • of seeing blessings through God.
  • 00:22:18.190 --> 00:22:20.230
  • That which is supernatural in his blessings will just
  • 00:22:20.240 --> 00:22:24.270
  • soon become hoi polloi.
  • 00:22:24.280 --> 00:22:27.100
  • You know, natural.
  • 00:22:27.110 --> 00:22:30.050
  • And so, we see the bubbling brook and then we run
  • 00:22:30.060 --> 00:22:33.010
  • into an amazing verse.
  • 00:22:33.020 --> 00:22:36.090
  • Whew, here he is, hiding with the Lord,
  • 00:22:36.100 --> 00:22:39.260
  • God teaching him to depend on God, depend on him.
  • 00:22:39.270 --> 00:22:43.170
  • And look here at verse 7, "And it happened after awhile that
  • 00:22:43.180 --> 00:22:47.220
  • the brook dried up."
  • 00:22:47.230 --> 00:22:51.200
  • Hello!
  • 00:22:51.210 --> 00:22:53.090
  • The bubbling brook, I like that, now the brook dried up.
  • 00:22:53.100 --> 00:22:58.180
  • Elijah could've said, "Lord, I'm in your will.
  • 00:22:58.190 --> 00:23:02.130
  • I've spoken before the king in confrontation and now I've gone
  • 00:23:02.140 --> 00:23:07.130
  • in concealment and hiding.
  • 00:23:07.140 --> 00:23:09.200
  • And boy, the bubbling brook and the ravens,
  • 00:23:09.210 --> 00:23:12.020
  • it's been super.
  • 00:23:12.030 --> 00:23:13.220
  • You've taught me some things, but now the brook's dried up.
  • 00:23:13.230 --> 00:23:19.140
  • Why in the world--what is God doing when the brook dried up?
  • 00:23:19.150 --> 00:23:24.020
  • I'm gonna tell you what he's doing.
  • 00:23:24.030 --> 00:23:25.120
  • Look at it. Look at the rest of the verse.
  • 00:23:25.130 --> 00:23:27.170
  • I left it out.
  • 00:23:27.180 --> 00:23:29.020
  • Verse 7: "And it happened after awhile that the brook dried up,
  • 00:23:29.030 --> 00:23:33.170
  • because there was no rain in the land."
  • 00:23:33.180 --> 00:23:36.160
  • Uh-oh, the brook dried up in answer to the prayer of Elijah.
  • 00:23:36.170 --> 00:23:45.170
  • Ha ha ha, didn't it?
  • 00:23:45.180 --> 00:23:48.180
  • He think he was gonna be exempt from the judgment of God?
  • 00:23:48.190 --> 00:23:51.100
  • He was a part of the people.
  • 00:23:51.110 --> 00:23:53.110
  • It was the answer to his prayer.
  • 00:23:53.120 --> 00:23:56.180
  • What's this all about, ladies and gentlemen?
  • 00:23:56.190 --> 00:24:00.180
  • God is teaching you and me, when brooks dry up,
  • 00:24:00.190 --> 00:24:05.080
  • when we're forced into hiding, God is teaching you and me
  • 00:24:05.090 --> 00:24:09.200
  • to be dependent on him.
  • 00:24:09.210 --> 00:24:12.030
  • What's he saying?
  • 00:24:12.040 --> 00:24:13.140
  • He wants us to understand there is nothing in this
  • 00:24:13.150 --> 00:24:16.120
  • life that is nailed down.
  • 00:24:16.130 --> 00:24:21.110
  • Do you think something's--
  • 00:24:21.120 --> 00:24:22.210
  • "Well, that's gonna always be there.
  • 00:24:22.220 --> 00:24:24.040
  • I've got this. I don't have--"
  • 00:24:24.050 --> 00:24:25.140
  • There's nothing nailed down.
  • 00:24:25.150 --> 00:24:30.240
  • Have to understand that.
  • 00:24:30.250 --> 00:24:32.270
  • Also, he was teaching us as he's teaching Elijah to set our
  • 00:24:32.280 --> 00:24:37.000
  • affections on things that are above and not so much time,
  • 00:24:37.010 --> 00:24:45.230
  • and energy, and affections on all this stuff that is below,
  • 00:24:45.240 --> 00:24:50.170
  • because nothing here, no relationship,
  • 00:24:50.180 --> 00:24:53.160
  • no security, no retirement, no job,
  • 00:24:53.170 --> 00:24:56.090
  • no nothing, none of it's nailed down.
  • 00:24:56.100 --> 00:25:02.190
  • He's teaching us with a bubbling brook and with a dried up brook
  • 00:25:02.200 --> 00:25:07.170
  • to be dependent on him.
  • 00:25:07.180 --> 00:25:13.180
  • If we're to become something like Jesus Christ wants us to
  • 00:25:13.190 --> 00:25:16.230
  • be, there'll be some dried up brooks with the bubbling brooks
  • 00:25:16.240 --> 00:25:20.230
  • to teach us to be totally reliant, dependent on God.
  • 00:25:20.240 --> 00:25:29.280
  • That's what this is all about.
  • 00:25:29.290 --> 00:25:32.210
  • Do you get it? You got it?
  • 00:25:32.220 --> 00:25:38.090
  • I can guarantee you one thing, live a little while and you will
  • 00:25:38.100 --> 00:25:44.210
  • need built in your life the principle of having to be
  • 00:25:44.220 --> 00:25:52.110
  • dependent on him and him alone.
  • 00:25:52.120 --> 00:25:59.120
  • male announcer: Our lives go through many season.
  • 00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:02.260
  • There are times of confidence and joy,
  • 00:26:02.270 --> 00:26:05.110
  • and there are times of doubt and desperation.
  • 00:26:05.120 --> 00:26:08.140
  • Despite these changing seasons, how can we make sure that we're
  • 00:26:08.150 --> 00:26:12.160
  • living the life God wants for us?
  • 00:26:12.170 --> 00:26:14.260
  • In his series, "Elijah: Truth for All Seasons,"
  • 00:26:14.270 --> 00:26:18.210
  • Dr. Young leads us through the life of the prophet Elijah,
  • 00:26:18.220 --> 00:26:22.030
  • a great man of God who stood for truth in the face of a pagan
  • 00:26:22.040 --> 00:26:26.000
  • king in an idolatrous nation.
  • 00:26:26.010 --> 00:26:28.190
  • However, like many of us today, he faced anxiety,
  • 00:26:28.200 --> 00:26:31.290
  • burnout, and depression.
  • 00:26:32.000 --> 00:26:34.030
  • Despite his weakness, God used Elijah in mighty ways.
  • 00:26:34.040 --> 00:26:37.200
  • In this series, you'll discover how God works out his purposes
  • 00:26:37.210 --> 00:26:41.090
  • even in times of deep despair and how he can
  • 00:26:41.100 --> 00:26:44.130
  • do that in your life too.
  • 00:26:44.140 --> 00:26:46.140

  • 00:27:01.010 --> 00:27:11.000
  • 00:27:11.010 --> 00:27:21.010
  • Dr. Young: Tough times, estranged times,
  • 00:27:22.010 --> 00:27:25.270
  • lonely, fearful times, dry brooks.
  • 00:27:25.280 --> 00:27:29.080
  • They're part of every one of our lives.
  • 00:27:29.090 --> 00:27:32.220
  • These seasons of struggle teach us so much about God and
  • 00:27:32.230 --> 00:27:36.060
  • also about ourselves.
  • 00:27:36.070 --> 00:27:38.210
  • In these times, we learn to be dependent on him and understand
  • 00:27:38.220 --> 00:27:41.260
  • that he alone is our source of security.
  • 00:27:41.270 --> 00:27:47.220
  • Wherever you are in life, we have people standing by who want
  • 00:27:47.230 --> 00:27:51.060
  • to talk with you and pray with you.
  • 00:27:51.070 --> 00:27:53.230
  • Call the number on your screen and you'll have someone there
  • 00:27:53.240 --> 00:27:56.280
  • who will listen to you, and lead you in prayer,
  • 00:27:56.290 --> 00:28:00.120
  • and pray for you, and send you material that will help you move
  • 00:28:00.130 --> 00:28:03.190
  • on from this place that you find yourself today.
  • 00:28:03.200 --> 00:28:08.040
  • Make that call.
  • 00:28:08.050 --> 00:28:10.000
  • You'll be thrilled that you did.
  • 00:28:10.010 --> 00:28:12.220
  • And let me personally thank you again for being with us today.
  • 00:28:12.230 --> 00:28:15.250
  • And join us again next week right here,
  • 00:28:15.260 --> 00:28:18.180
  • same time, same place, same station on "The Winning Walk."
  • 00:28:18.190 --> 00:28:24.150
  • 00:28:24.160 --> 00:28:28.260
