  • And now here is Dr. Jeremiah with his message,
  • 00:03:22.280 --> 00:03:27.060
  • "Slaying The Giant of Jealousy".
  • 00:03:27.070 --> 00:03:29.070
  • Dr. David Jeremiah: The Greek word for envy is
  • 00:03:30.260 --> 00:03:33.120
  • a very interesting word.
  • 00:03:33.130 --> 00:03:35.150
  • It is a word which means to boil within.
  • 00:03:35.160 --> 00:03:40.230
  • Picture in your mind a seething boiling jealousy growing
  • 00:03:40.240 --> 00:03:44.150
  • within the heart of a man.
  • 00:03:44.160 --> 00:03:47.020
  • Paul wrote about such jealousy in a church
  • 00:03:47.030 --> 00:03:50.080
  • to which he addressed a letter.
  • 00:03:50.090 --> 00:03:52.090
  • The church was the church in Corinth,
  • 00:03:52.100 --> 00:03:55.210
  • and Paul addressed his letter to that church with
  • 00:03:55.220 --> 00:03:58.260
  • his warnings to them concerning their spirit of jealousy.
  • 00:03:58.270 --> 00:04:03.080
  • In 1 Corinthians 3:3 and 4 we read,
  • 00:04:03.090 --> 00:04:05.280
  • "For you are still carnal.
  • 00:04:05.290 --> 00:04:07.290
  • For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you,
  • 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:12.190
  • are you not carnal behaving like mere men?
  • 00:04:12.200 --> 00:04:15.200
  • For when one says, 'I am of Paul,'
  • 00:04:15.210 --> 00:04:17.160
  • and another says, 'I am of Apollos,'
  • 00:04:17.170 --> 00:04:19.050
  • are you not carnal?"
  • 00:04:19.060 --> 00:04:21.150
  • What was happening in the church at Corinth was
  • 00:04:21.160 --> 00:04:23.130
  • they were dividing up into little cliques
  • 00:04:23.140 --> 00:04:25.180
  • and they became envious one another.
  • 00:04:25.190 --> 00:04:27.240
  • And the envy began to feed and to drive the jealousy
  • 00:04:27.250 --> 00:04:31.060
  • within their midst to the point where it was destroying
  • 00:04:31.070 --> 00:04:34.260
  • the unity in the church,
  • 00:04:34.270 --> 00:04:36.210
  • and Paul scored them for their evil attitudes.
  • 00:04:36.220 --> 00:04:42.040
  • Whenever we speak of the word "jealousy," we always seem
  • 00:04:42.050 --> 00:04:46.290
  • to use it interchangeably with the word "envy."
  • 00:04:47.000 --> 00:04:50.050
  • And the word "jealousy" and the word "envy"
  • 00:04:50.060 --> 00:04:52.070
  • are used interchangeably in the Word of God.
  • 00:04:52.080 --> 00:04:55.080
  • But there is a subtle difference between the two words.
  • 00:04:55.090 --> 00:04:59.230
  • Envy stands at the bottom of the pile breathing ill will
  • 00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:04.130
  • at everyone who is above it.
  • 00:05:04.140 --> 00:05:06.280
  • Jealous is afraid that what it owns will be taken away
  • 00:05:06.290 --> 00:05:09.270
  • by someone else.
  • 00:05:09.280 --> 00:05:12.110
  • Envy begins with empty hands mourning its lack,
  • 00:05:12.120 --> 00:05:15.170
  • enjoying when others lose their superiority.
  • 00:05:15.180 --> 00:05:19.140
  • Jealousy begins with full hands, fearful of losing
  • 00:05:19.150 --> 00:05:23.060
  • what it already has.
  • 00:05:23.070 --> 00:05:26.060
  • Jealousy is coarse and cruel.
  • 00:05:26.070 --> 00:05:29.030
  • Envy is sneaky and subtle.
  • 00:05:29.040 --> 00:05:33.000
  • Jealousy clutches and smothers, envy is forever reaching,
  • 00:05:33.010 --> 00:05:36.080
  • and longing, and squinting, and thinking,
  • 00:05:36.090 --> 00:05:38.200
  • and making sinister insinuations.
  • 00:05:38.210 --> 00:05:41.170
  • Envy and jealousy are sleepless bedfellows that keep each other
  • 00:05:41.180 --> 00:05:46.240
  • awake day and night in fitful agitation.
  • 00:05:46.250 --> 00:05:50.200
  • We're going to learn how to face the giant of jealousy.
  • 00:05:50.210 --> 00:05:54.090
  • Let's begin by understanding that jealousy travels
  • 00:05:54.100 --> 00:05:57.210
  • in circles.
  • 00:05:57.220 --> 00:06:00.090
  • It's a very interesting thought, but stay with me and I think
  • 00:06:00.100 --> 00:06:02.270
  • you will understand jealousy better when we're finished.
  • 00:06:02.280 --> 00:06:05.270
  • The circles of jealousy, jealousy travels
  • 00:06:05.280 --> 00:06:08.230
  • in pretty defined rotation.
  • 00:06:08.240 --> 00:06:12.200
  • For instance, you will find jealousy often
  • 00:06:12.210 --> 00:06:15.270
  • in the circle of proprietary things in proprietary circles.
  • 00:06:15.280 --> 00:06:23.100
  • What I'm talking about here is that when people
  • 00:06:23.110 --> 00:06:26.060
  • have possessions, when they have wealth,
  • 00:06:26.070 --> 00:06:28.270
  • when they have a lot of stuff, sometimes jealousy is found
  • 00:06:28.280 --> 00:06:33.140
  • in those circles.
  • 00:06:33.150 --> 00:06:35.100
  • For instance, in the Old Testament,
  • 00:06:35.110 --> 00:06:37.000
  • there's a writing concerning Isaac,
  • 00:06:37.010 --> 00:06:39.080
  • the son of Abraham, and it says
  • 00:06:39.090 --> 00:06:41.090
  • in Genesis 26:13 and 14, "The man began to prosper,"
  • 00:06:41.100 --> 00:06:45.130
  • now, watch this,
  • 00:06:45.140 --> 00:06:46.250
  • "and continued prospering until he became very prosperous.
  • 00:06:46.260 --> 00:06:51.220
  • For he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds
  • 00:06:51.230 --> 00:06:54.140
  • and a great number of servants.
  • 00:06:54.150 --> 00:06:56.240
  • So the Philistines envied him."
  • 00:06:56.250 --> 00:06:59.090
  • Now, you have to note this verse that Isaac was rich.
  • 00:06:59.100 --> 00:07:02.110
  • For the word "possessions" is here three times.
  • 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:04.220
  • He began to prosper and he continued prospering
  • 00:07:04.230 --> 00:07:08.110
  • until he became very prosperous, and Isaac had a lot of stuff.
  • 00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:12.230
  • But the Philistines saw him and became envious of him.
  • 00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:16.260
  • Jealousy often travels in the circles of the affluent,
  • 00:07:16.270 --> 00:07:20.180
  • who though they have accomplished much,
  • 00:07:20.190 --> 00:07:22.210
  • and gained much, and accrued much,
  • 00:07:22.220 --> 00:07:25.010
  • always have their eye on another who has a little bit more.
  • 00:07:25.020 --> 00:07:29.120
  • I am not here putting down those to whom God has given
  • 00:07:29.130 --> 00:07:32.120
  • a great stewardship of blessing.
  • 00:07:32.130 --> 00:07:34.200
  • For it is possible to have all of these things
  • 00:07:34.210 --> 00:07:36.250
  • and still be godly and be thankful for what you have.
  • 00:07:36.260 --> 00:07:40.100
  • But it is true that when you travel among the affluent,
  • 00:07:40.110 --> 00:07:44.040
  • no matter how much they have, and sometimes we stagger
  • 00:07:44.050 --> 00:07:47.000
  • at their possessions, you listen long enough,
  • 00:07:47.010 --> 00:07:49.230
  • and they're talking about what somebody else has
  • 00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:51.280
  • that's more than what they have.
  • 00:07:51.290 --> 00:07:53.290
  • How easy it is for jealousy to travel in proprietary circles,
  • 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:57.260
  • but then jealousy travels, secondly, in power circles.
  • 00:07:57.270 --> 00:08:02.200
  • In the Old Testament, we read about Miriam, and,
  • 00:08:02.210 --> 00:08:06.060
  • Aaron and Korah, who envied the leadership of Moses.
  • 00:08:06.070 --> 00:08:11.100
  • On one occasion, they said to Moses,
  • 00:08:11.110 --> 00:08:13.010
  • "You take too much upon yourself."
  • 00:08:13.020 --> 00:08:15.210
  • And in the Book of Psalms, we are told that
  • 00:08:15.220 --> 00:08:18.100
  • they envied Moses in the camp.
  • 00:08:18.110 --> 00:08:22.130
  • If you read the Old Testament book of Kings and Chronicles,
  • 00:08:22.140 --> 00:08:25.040
  • you will see story after story of very powerful kings
  • 00:08:25.050 --> 00:08:31.110
  • who gain their power, many of them,
  • 00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:33.160
  • by traitorous acts, usurping the power of another,
  • 00:08:33.170 --> 00:08:38.050
  • only to have that very same thing happened to them
  • 00:08:38.060 --> 00:08:40.220
  • once they reach the pinnacle of power.
  • 00:08:40.230 --> 00:08:42.230
  • There is a great jealousy among the powerful.
  • 00:08:42.240 --> 00:08:45.240
  • Sometimes jealousy runs in power circles.
  • 00:08:45.250 --> 00:08:48.050
  • You see a person in a position in the business world,
  • 00:08:48.060 --> 00:08:52.040
  • he's gained a certain domain over which he is responsible,
  • 00:08:52.050 --> 00:08:55.190
  • but he is not happy because there's somebody he knows
  • 00:08:55.200 --> 00:08:58.100
  • that has more people working for him
  • 00:08:58.110 --> 00:09:00.190
  • and more responsibility than he has.
  • 00:09:00.200 --> 00:09:02.270
  • And before you know it, he's lost sight
  • 00:09:02.280 --> 00:09:05.040
  • of his stewardship because he's so jealous
  • 00:09:05.050 --> 00:09:07.060
  • of stewardship of another.
  • 00:09:07.070 --> 00:09:09.220
  • Then jealousy travels in performance circles.
  • 00:09:09.230 --> 00:09:13.100
  • May I suggest to you this morning that if there's
  • 00:09:13.110 --> 00:09:15.100
  • any one of the circles where we all are vulnerable,
  • 00:09:15.110 --> 00:09:18.020
  • this would be the one?
  • 00:09:18.030 --> 00:09:20.120
  • And that's true, not only individually,
  • 00:09:20.130 --> 00:09:22.260
  • but it's true for us as a church.
  • 00:09:22.270 --> 00:09:25.260
  • The performance circle is illustrated by two men
  • 00:09:25.270 --> 00:09:30.260
  • in the Old Testament whom we've learned to know well,
  • 00:09:30.270 --> 00:09:33.200
  • Saul and David.
  • 00:09:33.210 --> 00:09:35.280
  • And you remember the story of how David came
  • 00:09:35.290 --> 00:09:37.230
  • to the battlefront and volunteered to go and fight
  • 00:09:37.240 --> 00:09:41.270
  • against the giant, and when he went
  • 00:09:41.280 --> 00:09:43.240
  • and in the power of Almighty God,
  • 00:09:43.250 --> 00:09:45.250
  • he slew Goliath and removed his head from his body.
  • 00:09:45.260 --> 00:09:48.100
  • He came back and as he was coming back from the war,
  • 00:09:48.110 --> 00:09:51.250
  • the maidens of Israel began to sing,
  • 00:09:51.260 --> 00:09:54.040
  • "Saul has slain his thousands, but David his ten thousands,"
  • 00:09:54.050 --> 00:09:58.060
  • and the green sickness began to grow in the heart of Saul,
  • 00:09:58.070 --> 00:10:02.110
  • so much so that you read in the Old Testament that Saul
  • 00:10:02.120 --> 00:10:05.160
  • spent the rest of his life tracking down David
  • 00:10:05.170 --> 00:10:08.170
  • in his attempt to kill him out of the anger
  • 00:10:08.180 --> 00:10:11.080
  • and jealousy in his own heart.
  • 00:10:11.090 --> 00:10:16.120
  • You will never find performance jealousy more prominent
  • 00:10:16.130 --> 00:10:19.290
  • than in a local church.
  • 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:22.150
  • It sticks its ugly head up when you least expect it,
  • 00:10:22.160 --> 00:10:26.220
  • in a place where you do not expect it,
  • 00:10:26.230 --> 00:10:30.010
  • people who feel like they should have been given
  • 00:10:30.020 --> 00:10:32.260
  • the solo instead of someone else.
  • 00:10:32.270 --> 00:10:36.010
  • They didn't get as much applause as the other person.
  • 00:10:36.020 --> 00:10:39.180
  • Their ministry isn't given the primary focus
  • 00:10:39.190 --> 00:10:42.100
  • that some other ministry is given.
  • 00:10:42.110 --> 00:10:44.180
  • They're not elected to this board or to that board.
  • 00:10:44.190 --> 00:10:47.280
  • And while serving Almighty God, we succumb to the temptation
  • 00:10:47.290 --> 00:10:52.100
  • to be envious of one another.
  • 00:10:52.110 --> 00:10:54.270
  • How subtle is the enemy?
  • 00:10:54.280 --> 00:10:57.110
  • Envy runs in performance circles,
  • 00:10:57.120 --> 00:10:59.090
  • but then let me remind you that envy travels
  • 00:10:59.100 --> 00:11:01.090
  • in professional circles as well.
  • 00:11:01.100 --> 00:11:03.270
  • There's a passage in the New Testament
  • 00:11:03.280 --> 00:11:05.170
  • that has always intrigued me.
  • 00:11:05.180 --> 00:11:07.090
  • Paul is writing to the Philippian believers
  • 00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:09.010
  • in the first chapter, and he's writing
  • 00:11:09.020 --> 00:11:11.020
  • from his cell in the Roman prison.
  • 00:11:11.030 --> 00:11:14.140
  • And as he writes to introduce his letter, he says,
  • 00:11:14.150 --> 00:11:17.060
  • "I need to tell you Philippians that some have taken advantage
  • 00:11:17.070 --> 00:11:21.160
  • of my imprisonment, and they are preaching
  • 00:11:21.170 --> 00:11:24.040
  • out of envy.
  • 00:11:24.050 --> 00:11:26.160
  • They are preaching to gain promotion for themselves
  • 00:11:26.170 --> 00:11:30.290
  • while I am incarcerated here in the Roman cell."
  • 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:34.140
  • Philippians 1:15 and 16 says it this way,
  • 00:11:34.150 --> 00:11:37.240
  • "Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife,
  • 00:11:37.250 --> 00:11:42.020
  • and some also from goodwill: The former preach Christ from
  • 00:11:42.030 --> 00:11:46.200
  • selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction
  • 00:11:46.210 --> 00:11:50.140
  • to my chains."
  • 00:11:50.150 --> 00:11:52.290
  • Paul could have responded to that badly,
  • 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:55.140
  • but you know what he did?
  • 00:11:55.150 --> 00:11:57.050
  • Here's a good clue.
  • 00:11:57.060 --> 00:11:58.170
  • He said, "You know what?
  • 00:11:58.180 --> 00:12:00.040
  • They're doing it and they're doing it wrong
  • 00:12:00.050 --> 00:12:01.200
  • and for the wrong reasons, but I can't get
  • 00:12:01.210 --> 00:12:03.000
  • into all that right now.
  • 00:12:03.010 --> 00:12:04.100
  • What I'm gonna do is just rejoice that the gospel
  • 00:12:04.110 --> 00:12:06.000
  • gets preached and go on with my life."
  • 00:12:06.010 --> 00:12:09.210
  • And that's what he did.
  • 00:12:09.220 --> 00:12:11.010
  • Jealousy runs in professional circles.
  • 00:12:11.020 --> 00:12:13.160
  • And then jealousy runs, finally, in personal circles.
  • 00:12:13.170 --> 00:12:17.090
  • This is probably where we see it the most,
  • 00:12:17.100 --> 00:12:19.190
  • and certainly, where we see it the most in the Bible.
  • 00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:22.210
  • Jealousy comes into our families and destroys
  • 00:12:22.220 --> 00:12:26.070
  • our own family fellowship.
  • 00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:28.290
  • There are more illustrations about family jealousy
  • 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:31.050
  • than in any other circle.
  • 00:12:31.060 --> 00:12:33.090
  • We see Cain jealous of Abel.
  • 00:12:33.100 --> 00:12:35.240
  • There's the story of Ishmael mocking Isaac
  • 00:12:35.250 --> 00:12:38.080
  • the day he was weaned.
  • 00:12:38.090 --> 00:12:39.290
  • And at birth, we discover that Jacob and Esau are going
  • 00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:42.170
  • to live a life of jealousy, one of the other.
  • 00:12:42.180 --> 00:12:45.120
  • In the New Testament, there's the story
  • 00:12:45.130 --> 00:12:47.080
  • of the prodigal son.
  • 00:12:47.090 --> 00:12:48.240
  • Often we lose the prodigal's son story because we're
  • 00:12:48.250 --> 00:12:51.130
  • so wrapped up in the boy who ran away from home,
  • 00:12:51.140 --> 00:12:53.180
  • we forget about the boy who didn't run away from home.
  • 00:12:53.190 --> 00:12:56.150
  • And you remember when the boy who ran away
  • 00:12:56.160 --> 00:12:58.100
  • from home came back, his father was so happy to see him.
  • 00:12:58.110 --> 00:13:00.290
  • He greeted him, and hugged him,
  • 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:02.200
  • and threw a party for him, killed the fatted calf for him,
  • 00:13:02.210 --> 00:13:06.150
  • put a robe on him and ring on him.
  • 00:13:06.160 --> 00:13:09.100
  • A little bit later on, sort of incidentally
  • 00:13:09.110 --> 00:13:11.030
  • in the story, we read that the older brother
  • 00:13:11.040 --> 00:13:14.040
  • wasn't as happy as he might ought to have been.
  • 00:13:14.050 --> 00:13:17.130
  • He answered and said to his father,
  • 00:13:17.140 --> 00:13:19.120
  • "Lo, these many years I have been serving you,
  • 00:13:19.130 --> 00:13:21.290
  • and I never transgressed your commandment at any time.
  • 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:24.280
  • And yet you never gave me a young goat,
  • 00:13:24.290 --> 00:13:27.190
  • that I might make merry with my friends."
  • 00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:31.000
  • And you can see the jealousy in his heart
  • 00:13:31.010 --> 00:13:33.150
  • over what has happened to his brother.
  • 00:13:33.160 --> 00:13:37.020
  • Perhaps the greatest illustration of family jealousy
  • 00:13:37.030 --> 00:13:39.280
  • is in the life of Joseph, whose brother so envied him
  • 00:13:39.290 --> 00:13:43.130
  • that they sold him into slavery in Egypt because Joseph
  • 00:13:43.140 --> 00:13:47.260
  • had the gall to tell them his dream.
  • 00:13:47.270 --> 00:13:52.230
  • And his dream was that his brothers were going
  • 00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:55.220
  • to bow down before him and that he was to be their ruler,
  • 00:13:55.230 --> 00:13:58.230
  • probably not a good thing to tell your brothers
  • 00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:01.000
  • a dream like that.
  • 00:14:01.010 --> 00:14:03.130
  • They were so filled with jealousy that the whole story
  • 00:14:03.140 --> 00:14:05.290
  • of Joseph is wrapped up in the intrigue
  • 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:08.070
  • between the brothers in the family of Jacob.
  • 00:14:08.080 --> 00:14:11.230
  • When jealousy enters the front door, my friends,
  • 00:14:11.240 --> 00:14:14.040
  • let me just remind you, love goes out the back door.
  • 00:14:14.050 --> 00:14:18.110
  • Jealousy intrudes to destroy.
  • 00:14:18.120 --> 00:14:21.160
  • Now, I want to remind you, as we think about this,
  • 00:14:21.170 --> 00:14:24.020
  • that jealousy travels in circles.
  • 00:14:24.030 --> 00:14:28.150
  • It may surprise you to learn that I have never been
  • 00:14:28.160 --> 00:14:32.230
  • personally jealous of a professional wrestler,
  • 00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:36.030
  • never have.
  • 00:14:36.040 --> 00:14:40.220
  • I have never been tempted to be jealous of painters or plumbers,
  • 00:14:40.230 --> 00:14:43.190
  • as much as I may admire what they do.
  • 00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:46.110
  • I am not jealous of bank presidents.
  • 00:14:46.120 --> 00:14:49.030
  • I do not have jealousy over music directors.
  • 00:14:49.040 --> 00:14:53.170
  • My problem with jealousy will always run
  • 00:14:53.180 --> 00:14:55.270
  • in the circles where I live.
  • 00:14:55.280 --> 00:14:59.260
  • I need to be careful not to look with green eyes
  • 00:14:59.270 --> 00:15:02.020
  • at the other guy who does what I do better than I do it.
  • 00:15:02.030 --> 00:15:06.110
  • So, what are the characteristics of this jealousy
  • 00:15:06.120 --> 00:15:09.230
  • that travels in circles?
  • 00:15:09.240 --> 00:15:11.100
  • First of all, it destroys others.
  • 00:15:11.110 --> 00:15:13.030
  • I don't have to demonstrate that.
  • 00:15:13.040 --> 00:15:14.220
  • I don't have to really illustrate it.
  • 00:15:14.230 --> 00:15:16.180
  • Go through the Bible and you will find it.
  • 00:15:16.190 --> 00:15:18.160
  • Cain killed Abel, remember?
  • 00:15:18.170 --> 00:15:21.090
  • Saul tried to kill David, and Herod was gonna kill
  • 00:15:21.100 --> 00:15:24.000
  • every baby that was born in that generation
  • 00:15:24.010 --> 00:15:26.080
  • because he was so jealous of any would-be rival
  • 00:15:26.090 --> 00:15:29.090
  • who would come to the throne.
  • 00:15:29.100 --> 00:15:31.120
  • Jealousy not only destroys others,
  • 00:15:31.130 --> 00:15:33.020
  • but jealousy destroys ourselves.
  • 00:15:33.030 --> 00:15:35.090
  • That's the tragedy of it.
  • 00:15:35.100 --> 00:15:36.260
  • Far more than the objects of our jealous,
  • 00:15:36.270 --> 00:15:39.000
  • hate is the pain that we wreak upon ourselves,
  • 00:15:39.010 --> 00:15:41.260
  • how we hurt and destroy our own lives by jealousy.
  • 00:15:41.270 --> 00:15:45.260
  • And it always seems to come back on us.
  • 00:15:45.270 --> 00:15:47.220
  • Remember Haman who was hanged on the gallows
  • 00:15:47.230 --> 00:15:50.150
  • that he originally built for the object of his own jealousy?
  • 00:15:50.160 --> 00:15:53.180
  • And then there were the people who were so jealous of Daniel
  • 00:15:53.190 --> 00:15:57.090
  • that they were gonna have him thrown in the lion's den.
  • 00:15:57.100 --> 00:16:00.090
  • And when Daniel came out unscathed,
  • 00:16:00.100 --> 00:16:02.030
  • they themselves were thrown in the lion's den.
  • 00:16:02.040 --> 00:16:04.080
  • And the Bible says that the lions had them totally devoured
  • 00:16:04.090 --> 00:16:07.040
  • before they get ever hit the floor of the cave.
  • 00:16:07.050 --> 00:16:10.290
  • So, envy and jealousy comes back upon us and that brings us
  • 00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:13.100
  • to the final question, what do we do about it?
  • 00:16:13.110 --> 00:16:16.010
  • Face the giant of jealousy.
  • 00:16:16.020 --> 00:16:18.130
  • How do we face it?
  • 00:16:18.140 --> 00:16:20.000
  • Well, you're not gonna like what I'm gonna tell you
  • 00:16:20.010 --> 00:16:23.130
  • because I don't particularly like it myself.
  • 00:16:23.140 --> 00:16:28.010
  • But it's the only thing I know to tell you
  • 00:16:28.020 --> 00:16:29.200
  • because it's the truth of the Word of God
  • 00:16:29.210 --> 00:16:31.010
  • and it's very similar to what we've said
  • 00:16:31.020 --> 00:16:32.190
  • in some of the other giants that we faced.
  • 00:16:32.200 --> 00:16:35.200
  • To fight against the giant of jealousy,
  • 00:16:35.210 --> 00:16:37.250
  • we necessarily must renounce jealousy as sin.
  • 00:16:37.260 --> 00:16:42.210
  • Please hear me this morning.
  • 00:16:42.220 --> 00:16:44.100
  • Jealousy is not just a personality disorder.
  • 00:16:44.110 --> 00:16:48.070
  • It is not something you inherited in your temperament.
  • 00:16:48.080 --> 00:16:53.000
  • Jealousy is sin.
  • 00:16:53.010 --> 00:16:55.260
  • It is included in the works of evil listed
  • 00:16:55.270 --> 00:16:58.180
  • in the Book of Galatians, Peter says we're to lay it aside
  • 00:16:58.190 --> 00:17:02.090
  • and leave it.
  • 00:17:02.100 --> 00:17:03.260
  • James says that where envy and self-seeking exists,
  • 00:17:03.270 --> 00:17:06.250
  • confusion and every evil thing are there.
  • 00:17:06.260 --> 00:17:10.150
  • Paul wrote to the Romans about jealousy and he said,
  • 00:17:10.160 --> 00:17:13.270
  • "Let us walk properly as in the day,
  • 00:17:13.280 --> 00:17:16.100
  • not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust,
  • 00:17:16.110 --> 00:17:20.010
  • not in strife and in envy."
  • 00:17:20.020 --> 00:17:23.050
  • Jealousy and envy is sin,
  • 00:17:23.060 --> 00:17:25.240
  • and if you don't understand this,
  • 00:17:25.250 --> 00:17:27.220
  • let me help you with it this way.
  • 00:17:27.230 --> 00:17:30.100
  • The Bible tells us in the New Testament
  • 00:17:30.110 --> 00:17:32.020
  • in the Book of Matthew that Jesus Christ was nailed
  • 00:17:32.030 --> 00:17:35.120
  • to the cross because of envy.
  • 00:17:35.130 --> 00:17:38.190
  • Pilate said he knew that they handed him over
  • 00:17:38.200 --> 00:17:42.040
  • because of their envy.
  • 00:17:42.050 --> 00:17:45.130
  • Every time I'm tempted to be jealous of someone
  • 00:17:45.140 --> 00:17:47.250
  • who's accomplished far more than I could accomplish,
  • 00:17:47.260 --> 00:17:50.210
  • I need to be reminded of this truth,
  • 00:17:50.220 --> 00:17:53.100
  • that my very jealous heart, my envious spirit,
  • 00:17:53.110 --> 00:17:56.220
  • is the very thing that nailed Jesus Christ to the cross,
  • 00:17:56.230 --> 00:18:00.280
  • and I should resist it with all of my heart
  • 00:18:00.290 --> 00:18:03.120
  • in the power of the Holy Spirit.
  • 00:18:03.130 --> 00:18:06.140
  • When you find that you have jealousy in your heart,
  • 00:18:06.150 --> 00:18:08.270
  • you must, first of all, renounce it as sin.
  • 00:18:08.280 --> 00:18:10.280
  • And secondly, you must remember
  • 00:18:10.290 --> 00:18:13.030
  • your rival in prayer.
  • 00:18:13.040 --> 00:18:14.280
  • You say, "Wait a minute, there is no way
  • 00:18:14.290 --> 00:18:16.280
  • I can pray for her,
  • 00:18:16.290 --> 00:18:18.120
  • no way I can pray for him."
  • 00:18:18.130 --> 00:18:19.250
  • But let me just ask you, what else can you do?
  • 00:18:19.260 --> 00:18:22.180
  • The Bible says that we're to pray for those
  • 00:18:22.190 --> 00:18:24.090
  • who despitefully use us.
  • 00:18:24.100 --> 00:18:26.100
  • When you begin to pray for someone who is
  • 00:18:26.110 --> 00:18:28.030
  • the object of your jealousy, all of a sudden,
  • 00:18:28.040 --> 00:18:31.060
  • your heart begins to change.
  • 00:18:31.070 --> 00:18:33.130
  • And then not only remember your rival in prayer,
  • 00:18:33.140 --> 00:18:36.170
  • but reaffirm God's goodness to you.
  • 00:18:36.180 --> 00:18:38.120
  • Let me just tell you something I've been learning
  • 00:18:38.130 --> 00:18:40.020
  • about this whole problem of jealousy and envy.
  • 00:18:40.030 --> 00:18:42.070
  • Listen carefully, whenever we're jealous of somebody else,
  • 00:18:42.080 --> 00:18:45.080
  • young people, here's something to kind of put in your notes.
  • 00:18:45.090 --> 00:18:47.100
  • Whenever you start to be a little jealous of somebody else,
  • 00:18:47.110 --> 00:18:49.170
  • it's always because you don't think God has been
  • 00:18:49.180 --> 00:18:51.180
  • as good to you as you think he should have been
  • 00:18:51.190 --> 00:18:54.090
  • because if you have everything God wants you to have,
  • 00:18:54.100 --> 00:18:57.190
  • why would you ever be jealous of somebody else?
  • 00:18:57.200 --> 00:18:59.240
  • When you start thinking about how God has blessed
  • 00:18:59.250 --> 00:19:01.200
  • someone else, you have forgotten how he's blessed you.
  • 00:19:01.210 --> 00:19:05.110
  • So, the way you get over that is,
  • 00:19:05.120 --> 00:19:07.010
  • you begin to take inventory and you start saying,
  • 00:19:07.020 --> 00:19:09.210
  • "Almighty God, thank you.
  • 00:19:09.220 --> 00:19:11.210
  • Thank you for how you have blessed my life.
  • 00:19:11.220 --> 00:19:13.110
  • I have more. You've given me more.
  • 00:19:13.120 --> 00:19:15.190
  • I've done more. I've been more places.
  • 00:19:15.200 --> 00:19:18.000
  • I've experienced more than I ever deserved.
  • 00:19:18.010 --> 00:19:20.010
  • And Lord God, how can I be jealous of that person
  • 00:19:20.020 --> 00:19:22.200
  • when I look back at the way you have blessed me?"
  • 00:19:22.210 --> 00:19:26.160
  • So, you begin to thank God for his goodness to your life.
  • 00:19:26.170 --> 00:19:30.060
  • And finally, you rekindle God's love in your heart.
  • 00:19:30.070 --> 00:19:34.120
  • Let me tell you something that the Bible tells you.
  • 00:19:34.130 --> 00:19:37.030
  • In 1 Corinthians 13, verse 4, we read that love does not envy.
  • 00:19:37.040 --> 00:19:43.260
  • Isn't that interesting?
  • 00:19:43.270 --> 00:19:45.060
  • Where there is love, there cannot be envy.
  • 00:19:45.070 --> 00:19:48.010
  • When love comes in the front door,
  • 00:19:48.020 --> 00:19:49.210
  • it'll push envy out the back.
  • 00:19:49.220 --> 00:19:51.100
  • When envy comes in the front door,
  • 00:19:51.110 --> 00:19:52.240
  • it'll push love out the back.
  • 00:19:52.250 --> 00:19:54.120
  • But when you rekindle God's love in your heart,
  • 00:19:54.130 --> 00:19:57.090
  • God's love will be so overwhelming
  • 00:19:57.100 --> 00:19:59.210
  • that envy won't be able to exist in the environment.
  • 00:19:59.220 --> 00:20:02.070
  • You say, "How do I rekindle God's love in my heart?"
  • 00:20:02.080 --> 00:20:04.210
  • Through the reading of the Word of God and through prayer.
  • 00:20:04.220 --> 00:20:06.270
  • There's no other way.
  • 00:20:06.280 --> 00:20:08.180
  • And God begins to help you understand.
  • 00:20:08.190 --> 00:20:10.240
  • The love of God becomes shed abroad in your heart,
  • 00:20:10.250 --> 00:20:14.040
  • says the Scripture.
  • 00:20:14.050 --> 00:20:17.140
  • And envy will be defeated.
  • 00:20:17.150 --> 00:20:20.240
  • There were once two men, both seriously ill,
  • 00:20:20.250 --> 00:20:23.290
  • in the same room have a great hospital,
  • 00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:26.230
  • quite a small room, just large enough
  • 00:20:26.240 --> 00:20:28.270
  • for the two of them, and two beds,
  • 00:20:28.280 --> 00:20:30.200
  • and two bedside lockers, and a door opening on the hall,
  • 00:20:30.210 --> 00:20:33.230
  • and a window looking out on the world.
  • 00:20:33.240 --> 00:20:38.160
  • One of the men, as part of his treatment,
  • 00:20:38.170 --> 00:20:41.010
  • was allowed to sit up for one hour every afternoon,
  • 00:20:41.020 --> 00:20:45.030
  • something that had to do with draining the fluid
  • 00:20:45.040 --> 00:20:47.150
  • from his lungs.
  • 00:20:47.160 --> 00:20:49.220
  • And his bed was next to the window,
  • 00:20:49.230 --> 00:20:52.140
  • but the other man had to spend all of his time flat on his back
  • 00:20:52.150 --> 00:20:55.130
  • and both of them had to be kept quiet and still,
  • 00:20:55.140 --> 00:20:58.190
  • which was the reason they were
  • 00:20:58.200 --> 00:20:59.290
  • in this small room by themselves.
  • 00:21:00.020 --> 00:21:01.200
  • And they were grateful for peace and privacy,
  • 00:21:01.210 --> 00:21:03.230
  • none of the bustling, and clatter,
  • 00:21:03.240 --> 00:21:05.060
  • and prying eyes of the general hospital.
  • 00:21:05.070 --> 00:21:07.270
  • Of course, one of the disadvantages
  • 00:21:07.280 --> 00:21:09.130
  • of their condition was that
  • 00:21:09.140 --> 00:21:11.040
  • they weren't allowed to do anything.
  • 00:21:11.050 --> 00:21:12.210
  • They couldn't read, they couldn't listen
  • 00:21:12.220 --> 00:21:14.030
  • to the radio, they couldn't watch television.
  • 00:21:14.040 --> 00:21:16.040
  • They had to just keep quiet and sit--
  • 00:21:16.050 --> 00:21:18.060
  • and keep still just the two of them in that one room.
  • 00:21:18.070 --> 00:21:21.250
  • But when no one else was around, they would talk by the hour.
  • 00:21:21.260 --> 00:21:26.110
  • They would share with one another about their wives,
  • 00:21:26.120 --> 00:21:28.130
  • and their children, and their homes,
  • 00:21:28.140 --> 00:21:29.270
  • and their former jobs, and their hobbies,
  • 00:21:29.280 --> 00:21:31.280
  • and the war, and vacations, and all sorts of things.
  • 00:21:31.290 --> 00:21:36.080
  • Every afternoon, the man in the bed next to the window,
  • 00:21:36.090 --> 00:21:39.170
  • when he got his moment to sit up,
  • 00:21:39.180 --> 00:21:41.270
  • would look out of the window and would pass the time
  • 00:21:41.280 --> 00:21:45.190
  • by describing to his friend what he saw.
  • 00:21:45.200 --> 00:21:49.290
  • As the other man began to live for these hours,
  • 00:21:50.000 --> 00:21:52.160
  • every day when the time came, he would look out the window
  • 00:21:52.170 --> 00:21:55.170
  • and describe what was going on outside.
  • 00:21:55.180 --> 00:21:58.100
  • The window apparently overlooked a park,
  • 00:21:58.110 --> 00:22:00.150
  • and there was a lake where there were ducks,
  • 00:22:00.160 --> 00:22:02.170
  • and swans, and children's-- children throwing them bread,
  • 00:22:02.180 --> 00:22:05.260
  • and sailing model boats,
  • 00:22:05.270 --> 00:22:07.060
  • and young lovers walking hand in hand.
  • 00:22:07.070 --> 00:22:09.180
  • And there were trees, and flowers,
  • 00:22:09.190 --> 00:22:11.150
  • and stretches of grass, and games of softball,
  • 00:22:11.160 --> 00:22:14.180
  • and people taking their ease in the sunshine.
  • 00:22:14.190 --> 00:22:17.050
  • And behind them all was this fringe of the trees
  • 00:22:17.060 --> 00:22:21.040
  • and a fine view of the city skyline.
  • 00:22:21.050 --> 00:22:25.130
  • And the man on his back would listen to all of this,
  • 00:22:25.140 --> 00:22:27.200
  • enjoying it as if it were experiencing--
  • 00:22:27.210 --> 00:22:29.230
  • he were experiencing it himself.
  • 00:22:29.240 --> 00:22:32.170
  • Then one fine afternoon when there was some sort of parade,
  • 00:22:32.180 --> 00:22:36.230
  • the thought struck him, "Why should he have
  • 00:22:36.240 --> 00:22:40.200
  • his bed next to the window?
  • 00:22:40.210 --> 00:22:44.220
  • Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing
  • 00:22:44.230 --> 00:22:46.220
  • what's going on?
  • 00:22:46.230 --> 00:22:48.290
  • Why shouldn't I get that chance?"
  • 00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:52.280
  • And he felt ashamed, and he tried
  • 00:22:52.290 --> 00:22:55.030
  • not to think about it.
  • 00:22:55.040 --> 00:22:56.230
  • But the more he tried, the worse he wanted to change.
  • 00:22:56.240 --> 00:23:00.080
  • He'd do anything, but he couldn't make it go away.
  • 00:23:00.090 --> 00:23:04.030
  • In a few days, he had turned totally sour.
  • 00:23:04.040 --> 00:23:07.090
  • He should be by the window. He brooded, he couldn't sleep.
  • 00:23:07.100 --> 00:23:11.050
  • He grew even more seriously ill,
  • 00:23:11.060 --> 00:23:13.190
  • which the doctors could not understand.
  • 00:23:13.200 --> 00:23:16.110
  • And one night as he stared at the ceiling,
  • 00:23:16.120 --> 00:23:19.160
  • the man by the window suddenly woke up coughing and choking.
  • 00:23:19.170 --> 00:23:23.220
  • The fluid congesting in his lungs,
  • 00:23:23.230 --> 00:23:25.180
  • his hands groping for the button that would bring
  • 00:23:25.190 --> 00:23:28.110
  • the night nurse running.
  • 00:23:28.120 --> 00:23:30.100
  • But the man laying flat on his back watched without moving.
  • 00:23:30.110 --> 00:23:36.020
  • The coughing racked the darkness on and on,
  • 00:23:36.030 --> 00:23:39.070
  • choked off, then stopped, and the man who laid
  • 00:23:39.080 --> 00:23:42.220
  • on his back continued to stare at the ceiling doing nothing.
  • 00:23:42.230 --> 00:23:47.200
  • In the morning, the day nurse came in with water
  • 00:23:47.210 --> 00:23:51.170
  • for their baths and found the other man dead.
  • 00:23:51.180 --> 00:23:55.240
  • They took away his body quietly with no fuss,
  • 00:23:55.250 --> 00:24:00.150
  • and as soon as it seemed decent, the man asked
  • 00:24:00.160 --> 00:24:03.200
  • if he could be moved to the bed next to the window.
  • 00:24:03.210 --> 00:24:07.240
  • They moved him, tucked him in, made him quite comfortable,
  • 00:24:07.250 --> 00:24:12.140
  • and left him alone to be quiet and still.
  • 00:24:12.150 --> 00:24:16.010
  • The minute they'd gone, he propped himself up
  • 00:24:16.020 --> 00:24:18.250
  • on one elbow painfully, laboriously,
  • 00:24:18.260 --> 00:24:22.170
  • and looked out the window and discovered
  • 00:24:22.180 --> 00:24:25.210
  • that it faced a blank wall.
  • 00:24:25.220 --> 00:24:32.060
  • The friend over whom he had been so jealous had literally been
  • 00:24:32.070 --> 00:24:36.020
  • ministering to his bed partner by telling him
  • 00:24:36.030 --> 00:24:40.240
  • from his imagination, the stories of all the things
  • 00:24:40.250 --> 00:24:44.040
  • he knew would make him better.
  • 00:24:44.050 --> 00:24:47.180
  • In his jealousy, he destroyed the very thing that had come
  • 00:24:47.190 --> 00:24:52.280
  • to give him life and ended up himself with nothing.
  • 00:24:52.290 --> 00:24:58.220
  • My friend, I have never heard a story that describes better
  • 00:24:58.230 --> 00:25:02.190
  • the power of a jealous heart to ruin those around us
  • 00:25:02.200 --> 00:25:08.130
  • and ultimately to destroy our own peace.
  • 00:25:08.140 --> 00:25:11.280
  • So, I tell you today, don't just face the giant of jealousy,
  • 00:25:11.290 --> 00:25:16.270
  • fight it and be victorious over it through the power
  • 00:25:16.280 --> 00:25:20.240
  • of the Holy Spirit, and begin to live your life
  • 00:25:20.250 --> 00:25:23.140
