  • 00:00:01.190 --> 00:00:04.090
  • James Merritt: You know, as I look back on my life some
  • 00:00:04.130 --> 00:00:06.220
  • of the greatest words are the ones I never said.
  • 00:00:06.230 --> 00:00:10.250
  • Some of the greatest letters are the ones I never sent.
  • 00:00:10.260 --> 00:00:14.170
  • Some of the greatest actions are the ones I didn't take and I
  • 00:00:14.180 --> 00:00:17.190
  • wanna remind you none of these qualities are possible-- love,
  • 00:00:17.200 --> 00:00:21.160
  • joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
  • 00:00:21.170 --> 00:00:25.290
  • gentleness, self-control-- none of those are possible apart
  • 00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:29.160
  • from the Son of God and the Spirit of God.
  • 00:00:29.170 --> 00:00:32.020
  • announcer: Teaching people everywhere, who Jesus is and why
  • 00:00:32.230 --> 00:00:35.100
  • they need him.
  • 00:00:35.110 --> 00:00:36.200
  • This is "Touching Lives with James Merritt."
  • 00:00:36.210 --> 00:00:39.010
  • James: I love stories, but I really love true stories.
  • 00:00:39.170 --> 00:00:42.060
  • I want to tell you one of the most incredible true
  • 00:00:42.070 --> 00:00:43.280
  • stories I've ever read in my life.
  • 00:00:43.290 --> 00:00:46.160
  • It's about a 14th century duke in what is now Belgium.
  • 00:00:46.170 --> 00:00:49.220
  • He was grossly overweight.
  • 00:00:49.230 --> 00:00:51.060
  • His name was Renauld III but he had a Latin nickname, "Crassus,"
  • 00:00:51.070 --> 00:00:55.170
  • which means fat and this is the story.
  • 00:00:55.180 --> 00:00:58.230
  • Renauld's younger brother, Edward, revolted against Renauld
  • 00:00:58.240 --> 00:01:01.230
  • captured him, but he didn't kill him.
  • 00:01:01.240 --> 00:01:03.250
  • Instead, he built a room around Renauld in the castle
  • 00:01:03.260 --> 00:01:07.130
  • and promised him he could regain his title and his property when
  • 00:01:07.140 --> 00:01:11.050
  • he left the room.
  • 00:01:11.060 --> 00:01:12.170
  • Now that sounds easy enough since the room had several
  • 00:01:12.180 --> 00:01:15.070
  • windows and a door of pretty much normal size.
  • 00:01:15.080 --> 00:01:18.180
  • The windows were unlocked and so was the door.
  • 00:01:18.190 --> 00:01:21.060
  • The problem was Renauld's size.
  • 00:01:21.070 --> 00:01:23.280
  • He was so huge he couldn't crawl through any of the windows
  • 00:01:23.290 --> 00:01:28.100
  • and he was so fat he couldn't get through the door.
  • 00:01:28.110 --> 00:01:30.290
  • So all he had to do to regain his freedom was just
  • 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:33.120
  • lose weight.
  • 00:01:33.130 --> 00:01:34.250
  • Well, the problem was Edward knew that his older brother, you
  • 00:01:34.260 --> 00:01:38.080
  • know, very well, and he knew that he loved to eat.
  • 00:01:38.090 --> 00:01:41.110
  • So every day he sent a variety of delicious fattening foods
  • 00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:45.290
  • into the room.
  • 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:47.040
  • He would send cakes and pies and he would send all kind
  • 00:01:47.050 --> 00:01:51.060
  • of carbohydrate-filled foods and things and he really loved.
  • 00:01:51.070 --> 00:01:54.050
  • Well, instead of dieting his way out of the prison, Renauld just
  • 00:01:54.060 --> 00:01:57.130
  • kept eating and he got fatter and fatter and fatter.
  • 00:01:57.140 --> 00:02:01.110
  • When Duke Edward was accused of being cruel to his brother
  • 00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:03.220
  • by keeping him a prisoner, he would always say my brother is
  • 00:02:03.230 --> 00:02:07.080
  • not a prisoner.
  • 00:02:07.090 --> 00:02:08.100
  • He can walk out of there anytime that he Chooses.
  • 00:02:08.110 --> 00:02:11.270
  • Renauld stayed in that room for ten years and was not
  • 00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:16.040
  • released until after Edward died in battle, but the problem was
  • 00:02:16.050 --> 00:02:20.110
  • by the time that he was finally released, his health was
  • 00:02:20.120 --> 00:02:23.030
  • so ruined he died less than a year later.
  • 00:02:23.040 --> 00:02:26.200
  • The man literally died a prisoner of his own appetite.
  • 00:02:26.210 --> 00:02:31.130
  • He was a prisoner in a room.
  • 00:02:31.140 --> 00:02:33.110
  • He could've left anytime he wanted to but he eventually
  • 00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:36.250
  • killed himself for one reason: the lack of self-control.
  • 00:02:36.260 --> 00:02:41.290
  • Think about that.
  • 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:43.180
  • Self-control could've gotten them out of the prison, the lack
  • 00:02:43.190 --> 00:02:46.160
  • of it kept him in.
  • 00:02:46.170 --> 00:02:48.090
  • We're in a series I've thoroughly enjoyed and got
  • 00:02:48.100 --> 00:02:50.260
  • so many positive comments about we called it "Tasty."
  • 00:02:50.270 --> 00:02:54.100
  • And it's based on a passage in a book called Galatians that
  • 00:02:54.110 --> 00:02:57.170
  • deals with what is known as the fruit of the Spirit.
  • 00:02:57.180 --> 00:03:00.210
  • It reads like this: But the fruit of the Spirit is love,
  • 00:03:00.220 --> 00:03:04.280
  • joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness,
  • 00:03:04.290 --> 00:03:09.190
  • faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
  • 00:03:09.200 --> 00:03:13.170
  • When a follower-- a person becomes a follower of Jesus
  • 00:03:13.180 --> 00:03:16.260
  • here's what happens: the Holy Spirit comes into that person
  • 00:03:16.270 --> 00:03:20.170
  • for the express purpose of living a life of God
  • 00:03:20.180 --> 00:03:23.160
  • through that person and the way that life is evidence, the way
  • 00:03:23.170 --> 00:03:26.220
  • you see that life is like a tree, is in the fruit
  • 00:03:26.230 --> 00:03:29.270
  • that they bear.
  • 00:03:29.280 --> 00:03:31.000
  • And one of the marks that you're truly in step with God
  • 00:03:31.010 --> 00:03:33.240
  • and you're really following God is the way that you relate
  • 00:03:33.250 --> 00:03:36.270
  • to other people and the way you respond to circumstances.
  • 00:03:36.280 --> 00:03:40.200
  • Just like fruit is tasty to the tongue and good
  • 00:03:40.210 --> 00:03:43.230
  • for the body, God wants you and me to live a life in such
  • 00:03:43.240 --> 00:03:47.040
  • a way, such an attractive way, that people find us tasty.
  • 00:03:47.050 --> 00:03:51.100
  • They look at the way we live and the way we talk and the way
  • 00:03:51.110 --> 00:03:54.010
  • we act, and they're drawn to us, and they say, "You know, I wanna
  • 00:03:54.020 --> 00:03:57.260
  • be just like you.
  • 00:03:57.270 --> 00:03:59.160
  • I want to know the God that lives in you."
  • 00:03:59.170 --> 00:04:02.230
  • So we're coming to the last part of that fruit that Paul calls
  • 00:04:02.240 --> 00:04:07.180
  • self-control and if there's any fruit on this list where all
  • 00:04:07.190 --> 00:04:11.100
  • of us are sometime lacking beginning with me, even the most
  • 00:04:11.110 --> 00:04:14.160
  • discipline of us, it would be this fruit.
  • 00:04:14.170 --> 00:04:17.190
  • So just ask yourself the following questions: Have
  • 00:04:17.200 --> 00:04:21.120
  • you ever eaten too much?
  • 00:04:21.130 --> 00:04:24.130
  • Have you ever eaten so much that you literally got sick to your
  • 00:04:24.140 --> 00:04:28.050
  • stomach?
  • 00:04:28.060 --> 00:04:29.280
  • How about this, have you ever stuck your nose in a matter that
  • 00:04:29.290 --> 00:04:33.020
  • was none of your business?
  • 00:04:33.030 --> 00:04:35.200
  • Have you ever meddled in somebody else's affair?
  • 00:04:35.210 --> 00:04:39.290
  • How about this, have you ever said something when you
  • 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:43.200
  • should've said nothing?
  • 00:04:43.210 --> 00:04:46.160
  • Have you ever made an impulse buy?
  • 00:04:46.170 --> 00:04:49.060
  • Bought something you didn't need with money you didn't have
  • 00:04:49.070 --> 00:04:51.140
  • to impress people you don't even like.
  • 00:04:51.150 --> 00:04:53.230
  • Have you ever procrastinated, put something off until tomorrow
  • 00:04:53.240 --> 00:04:56.290
  • that you know you should've done today?
  • 00:04:57.000 --> 00:05:00.110
  • Here's one.
  • 00:05:00.120 --> 00:05:02.020
  • How many of you wish you'd never ever heard of a credit card?
  • 00:05:02.030 --> 00:05:07.110
  • How many of you have a problem with a lack of self-control?
  • 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:13.030
  • I'm not here to beat you up because the greatest
  • 00:05:13.040 --> 00:05:16.010
  • Christian who ever lived, not counting of course, Jesus
  • 00:05:16.020 --> 00:05:18.110
  • Christ, was a man by the name of Paul and if you know anything
  • 00:05:18.120 --> 00:05:21.160
  • about the apostle Paul you would think he had it all together.
  • 00:05:21.170 --> 00:05:24.160
  • Man, if anybody came close to being perfect you might think
  • 00:05:24.170 --> 00:05:27.070
  • it would be him.
  • 00:05:27.080 --> 00:05:28.130
  • At the height of his career he was the greatest preacher,
  • 00:05:28.140 --> 00:05:31.060
  • the greatest theologian, the greatest missionary,
  • 00:05:31.070 --> 00:05:33.180
  • the greatest evangelist, the greatest church planner,
  • 00:05:33.190 --> 00:05:36.020
  • in the whole world.
  • 00:05:36.030 --> 00:05:37.130
  • You might say he was kinda like Rick Warren and Billy
  • 00:05:37.140 --> 00:05:40.010
  • Graham rolled into one person, yet in one of the most candid
  • 00:05:40.020 --> 00:05:43.120
  • transparent passages he ever wrote about himself he made this
  • 00:05:43.130 --> 00:05:47.080
  • simple statement.
  • 00:05:47.090 --> 00:05:48.140
  • He said, "I don't understand what I do for what I want to do.
  • 00:05:48.150 --> 00:05:52.060
  • I do not do but what I hate to do."
  • 00:05:52.070 --> 00:05:56.070
  • Sounds like you, it sounds like me at times, and it's
  • 00:05:56.080 --> 00:05:58.190
  • absolutely amazing.
  • 00:05:58.200 --> 00:06:00.090
  • He's admitting as much as I love God, as close as I am to God, as
  • 00:06:00.100 --> 00:06:04.210
  • much as I walk with God, as thrilled I as I am with God, as
  • 00:06:04.220 --> 00:06:08.020
  • much as I really worship God, I have a problem
  • 00:06:08.030 --> 00:06:11.090
  • with self-control.
  • 00:06:11.100 --> 00:06:13.020
  • And we're living in my opinion, in a culture that absolutely is
  • 00:06:13.030 --> 00:06:17.040
  • increasingly out of control.
  • 00:06:17.050 --> 00:06:19.150
  • Seems to me at least that were increasingly rewarding evil
  • 00:06:19.160 --> 00:06:22.200
  • and condemning good.
  • 00:06:22.210 --> 00:06:24.070
  • I mean, from road rage, to frivolous lawsuits,
  • 00:06:24.080 --> 00:06:29.160
  • to teenage pregnancies, to disintegrating families.
  • 00:06:29.170 --> 00:06:33.210
  • We are increasingly out of control, but let me just
  • 00:06:33.220 --> 00:06:37.020
  • be honest, you won't even be motivated to practice
  • 00:06:37.030 --> 00:06:40.160
  • self-control and bear the fruit of self-control if you don't
  • 00:06:40.170 --> 00:06:43.250
  • understand the consequences of being out of control.
  • 00:06:43.260 --> 00:06:46.290
  • Proverbs 25:28 the wise man Solomon said this, "Like a city
  • 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:51.190
  • whose walls are broken down is a person who lacks
  • 00:06:51.200 --> 00:06:55.050
  • self-control."
  • 00:06:55.060 --> 00:06:56.250
  • You can paraphrase that this way: when you and I fail
  • 00:06:56.260 --> 00:06:59.230
  • to control our desires, when we allow self to control us instead
  • 00:06:59.240 --> 00:07:03.190
  • of controlling self, we will be like a bank vault
  • 00:07:03.200 --> 00:07:06.210
  • with the screen door.
  • 00:07:06.220 --> 00:07:08.100
  • It's just that bad.
  • 00:07:08.110 --> 00:07:10.090
  • So, in Solomon's day, every city was fortified by thick
  • 00:07:10.100 --> 00:07:14.050
  • stone walls.
  • 00:07:14.060 --> 00:07:15.150
  • And cities were usually built on hills with fortifications
  • 00:07:15.160 --> 00:07:19.140
  • that follow the natural contour of the land and the only real
  • 00:07:19.150 --> 00:07:22.270
  • source of defense were the walls and when those walls came
  • 00:07:22.280 --> 00:07:25.280
  • down the city was absolutely defenseless.
  • 00:07:25.290 --> 00:07:28.190
  • And what Solomon was saying was your life is like a city
  • 00:07:28.200 --> 00:07:31.090
  • and without the walls of self-control an individual,
  • 00:07:31.100 --> 00:07:36.260
  • a family, a city, a state, and even a nation, is totally
  • 00:07:36.270 --> 00:07:42.210
  • defenseless and easy prey for the enemy.
  • 00:07:42.220 --> 00:07:45.200
  • You know, whether you're playing a musical instrument or you're
  • 00:07:45.210 --> 00:07:48.110
  • mastering a computer program or you're learning a foreign
  • 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:50.280
  • language whatever you're trying to do, it demands self-control.
  • 00:07:50.290 --> 00:07:55.210
  • That's why Aristotle said self-control is the hardest
  • 00:07:55.220 --> 00:07:59.160
  • victory you will ever win.
  • 00:07:59.170 --> 00:08:02.030
  • So it's just as simple if you control self you win.
  • 00:08:02.040 --> 00:08:07.090
  • If self controls you, you lose.
  • 00:08:07.100 --> 00:08:10.090
  • So the truth is self-control is not something you can do
  • 00:08:10.100 --> 00:08:13.050
  • by yourself, it is something that only God can do
  • 00:08:13.060 --> 00:08:16.230
  • through you.
  • 00:08:16.240 --> 00:08:18.060
  • Here's what I want you to learn.
  • 00:08:18.070 --> 00:08:19.290
  • If God is in control of you, then you can control you.
  • 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:23.290
  • If God is in control of you, then you can control you.
  • 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:28.030
  • So I want you to look yourself in the mirror right now and ask
  • 00:08:28.040 --> 00:08:31.090
  • a very hard but honest question: who is in control?
  • 00:08:31.100 --> 00:08:38.040
  • Who is in control?
  • 00:08:38.050 --> 00:08:40.120
  • Now the only two answers you get to that question, only two.
  • 00:08:40.130 --> 00:08:43.040
  • You or God.
  • 00:08:43.050 --> 00:08:44.050
  • It's that simple.
  • 00:08:44.060 --> 00:08:45.060
  • You or God.
  • 00:08:45.070 --> 00:08:47.000
  • Who's in control of your finances?
  • 00:08:47.010 --> 00:08:48.250
  • You or God?
  • 00:08:48.260 --> 00:08:51.230
  • Who's in control of your attitudes?
  • 00:08:51.240 --> 00:08:54.040
  • You or God?
  • 00:08:54.050 --> 00:08:56.190
  • So let's answer the question.
  • 00:08:56.200 --> 00:08:57.280
  • Okay, how do you get self under control?
  • 00:08:57.290 --> 00:09:01.050
  • How do you get you under control?
  • 00:09:01.060 --> 00:09:03.190
  • Well, since we're talking about self-control, let's use
  • 00:09:03.200 --> 00:09:06.060
  • the word self to refer to you, your desires, what the Bible
  • 00:09:06.070 --> 00:09:09.270
  • calls your flesh or what you want.
  • 00:09:09.280 --> 00:09:12.020
  • How do you get self under control?
  • 00:09:12.030 --> 00:09:14.270
  • Well, in this passage both before and after the fruit
  • 00:09:14.280 --> 00:09:18.170
  • of the Spirit, Paul gives us the bookends to self-control.
  • 00:09:18.180 --> 00:09:22.280
  • So if you'd be honest enough to say boy, I need this message.
  • 00:09:22.290 --> 00:09:26.070
  • I need to learn how to control my temper.
  • 00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:28.070
  • I need you can learn how to control my time.
  • 00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:30.200
  • I need to learn how to control my thoughts.
  • 00:09:30.210 --> 00:09:33.190
  • There's so many things I need to get under control.
  • 00:09:33.200 --> 00:09:36.230
  • Here's the key.
  • 00:09:36.240 --> 00:09:37.260
  • Number one, confront yourself.
  • 00:09:37.270 --> 00:09:42.000
  • Confront yourself.
  • 00:09:42.010 --> 00:09:43.220
  • The first thing you gotta understand in this battle that
  • 00:09:43.230 --> 00:09:46.220
  • goes on in yourself and the desires that you have
  • 00:09:46.230 --> 00:09:48.280
  • at times that you know are contrary to what God wants.
  • 00:09:48.290 --> 00:09:52.060
  • This goes all the way back to the garden of Eden.
  • 00:09:52.070 --> 00:09:55.120
  • That's why all of us have this battle.
  • 00:09:55.130 --> 00:09:58.150
  • So if you don't understand something you're never gonna get
  • 00:09:58.160 --> 00:10:00.140
  • to where you need to go.
  • 00:10:00.150 --> 00:10:01.190
  • The reason why the world's in the mess it's in right now is
  • 00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:04.270
  • because of two people named Adam and Eve, and you know what got
  • 00:10:04.280 --> 00:10:07.290
  • us into this mess?
  • 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:09.010
  • They did not exercise self-control.
  • 00:10:09.020 --> 00:10:12.230
  • If Adam and Eve had just left the fruit of one tree alone.
  • 00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:17.190
  • We all would have lived happily ever after.
  • 00:10:17.200 --> 00:10:20.120
  • See, God created a perfect environment.
  • 00:10:20.130 --> 00:10:23.090
  • He put Adam and Eve in it and he basically said look, look at all
  • 00:10:23.100 --> 00:10:26.250
  • the fruit, look at all the trees, look at all the food.
  • 00:10:26.260 --> 00:10:30.110
  • He said you can eat everything in the garden and you can eat as
  • 00:10:30.120 --> 00:10:33.180
  • much as you want to eat except one thing.
  • 00:10:33.190 --> 00:10:38.140
  • And the one thing that God said they couldn't have is the first
  • 00:10:38.150 --> 00:10:43.030
  • thing they took.
  • 00:10:43.040 --> 00:10:45.080
  • And for that moment, everybody that's ever been born has been
  • 00:10:45.090 --> 00:10:48.240
  • born with exactly the same problem that causes self-control
  • 00:10:48.250 --> 00:10:52.250
  • to be such a battle and Paul tells us in one word what that
  • 00:10:52.260 --> 00:10:56.060
  • problem is.
  • 00:10:56.070 --> 00:10:57.070
  • It's a five letter word called flesh.
  • 00:10:57.080 --> 00:11:00.120
  • Now, in our translation we read it this way: "For the sinful
  • 00:11:00.130 --> 00:11:05.140
  • nature," that is, our flesh, "desires what is contrary
  • 00:11:05.150 --> 00:11:09.000
  • to the Spirit, that is the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit what is
  • 00:11:09.010 --> 00:11:12.260
  • contrary to the sinful nature.
  • 00:11:12.270 --> 00:11:15.040
  • They're in conflict with each other so that you are not to do
  • 00:11:15.050 --> 00:11:18.110
  • what you want but if you are led by the Spirit you are not
  • 00:11:18.120 --> 00:11:23.000
  • under the law."
  • 00:11:23.010 --> 00:11:25.030
  • Now what Paul means by that sinful nature is simply
  • 00:11:25.040 --> 00:11:28.010
  • the desire that we're all born with, that we all came
  • 00:11:28.020 --> 00:11:31.140
  • out of our mother's womb with.
  • 00:11:31.150 --> 00:11:33.060
  • We all came out the same way: we want to have our way, get what
  • 00:11:33.070 --> 00:11:37.200
  • we want, get it when we want it, not share it with anybody else,
  • 00:11:37.210 --> 00:11:42.090
  • and to put ourselves first.
  • 00:11:42.100 --> 00:11:44.200
  • In other words, it's what some scientists and some
  • 00:11:44.210 --> 00:11:47.000
  • psychologists would call the animal instinct.
  • 00:11:47.010 --> 00:11:50.100
  • We all have that desire.
  • 00:11:50.110 --> 00:11:51.230
  • "I wanna call my own shots, I want to do my own thing, I want
  • 00:11:51.240 --> 00:11:55.190
  • to be my own boss, I want to look out for number one."
  • 00:11:55.200 --> 00:11:58.150
  • Listen, even after you become a follower of Jesus, this nature
  • 00:11:58.160 --> 00:12:01.270
  • is still in you.
  • 00:12:01.280 --> 00:12:03.030
  • You still have that desire to do the one thing that God says
  • 00:12:03.040 --> 00:12:06.150
  • don't do.
  • 00:12:06.160 --> 00:12:07.200
  • You still have that desire to take that one thing that God
  • 00:12:07.210 --> 00:12:10.000
  • says don't take.
  • 00:12:10.010 --> 00:12:11.190
  • You still have that desire to go to that one place that God says
  • 00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:14.220
  • don't go and you see the results of a society that's
  • 00:12:14.230 --> 00:12:18.170
  • out of control, you see the results of a culture where
  • 00:12:18.180 --> 00:12:21.230
  • self is in control in these verses.
  • 00:12:21.240 --> 00:12:24.090
  • Paul says, "The acts of the sinful nature
  • 00:12:24.100 --> 00:12:26.120
  • are obvious."
  • 00:12:26.130 --> 00:12:28.010
  • Think about what you read in the paper.
  • 00:12:28.020 --> 00:12:30.040
  • Think about what you hear on the news.
  • 00:12:30.050 --> 00:12:31.140
  • Listen, "sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry,
  • 00:12:31.150 --> 00:12:40.270
  • witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish
  • 00:12:40.280 --> 00:12:48.040
  • ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy, drunkenness, orgies,
  • 00:12:48.050 --> 00:12:53.270
  • and the like."
  • 00:12:53.280 --> 00:12:55.050
  • "I warn you," Paul says, "as I did before that those who live
  • 00:12:55.060 --> 00:12:58.170
  • like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."
  • 00:12:58.180 --> 00:13:02.250
  • Listen, don't just take my word for it.
  • 00:13:02.260 --> 00:13:05.110
  • Let's take a few of these and you just judge for yourself,
  • 00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:07.230
  • just a simple question.
  • 00:13:07.240 --> 00:13:09.150
  • Is there are plenty of sexual immorality and idolatry
  • 00:13:09.160 --> 00:13:13.150
  • and debauchery in our culture today?
  • 00:13:13.160 --> 00:13:16.070
  • I mean, do you think idolatry is a problem?
  • 00:13:16.080 --> 00:13:18.160
  • How 'bout fits of rage?
  • 00:13:18.170 --> 00:13:19.270
  • How 'bout selfish ambition?
  • 00:13:19.280 --> 00:13:21.140
  • How 'bout factions?
  • 00:13:21.150 --> 00:13:22.260
  • How 'bout divisions?
  • 00:13:22.270 --> 00:13:24.110
  • How 'bout all of this lack of bipartisanship in our in our
  • 00:13:24.120 --> 00:13:28.090
  • country's capital?
  • 00:13:28.100 --> 00:13:29.200
  • How 'bout drunkenness?
  • 00:13:29.210 --> 00:13:30.260
  • How 'bout orgies?
  • 00:13:30.270 --> 00:13:31.270
  • And here's the point I'm trying to make.
  • 00:13:31.280 --> 00:13:33.110
  • All I'm saying is you will never control yourself until you
  • 00:13:33.120 --> 00:13:37.130
  • confront yourself and realize yourself is the problem,
  • 00:13:37.140 --> 00:13:40.280
  • until you recognize every day when you get up my number one
  • 00:13:40.290 --> 00:13:44.140
  • enemy is the guy I'm looking at in the mirror.
  • 00:13:44.150 --> 00:13:46.200
  • My number one enemy today in being what I ought to be
  • 00:13:46.210 --> 00:13:48.270
  • and do what I ought to do is me until you finally recognize
  • 00:13:48.280 --> 00:13:52.250
  • everyday that self is something that must be brought
  • 00:13:52.260 --> 00:13:55.240
  • under control, you will not control self, self will
  • 00:13:55.250 --> 00:14:00.060
  • control you.
  • 00:14:00.070 --> 00:14:01.160
  • But once you confront yourself, once you're willing to stand
  • 00:14:01.170 --> 00:14:04.110
  • up to yourself, once you're willing to recognize that self
  • 00:14:04.120 --> 00:14:07.030
  • is a problem then you say okay, I give up, I surrender, self is
  • 00:14:07.040 --> 00:14:13.170
  • a problem.
  • 00:14:13.180 --> 00:14:14.270
  • I'm my enemy, what do I do?
  • 00:14:14.280 --> 00:14:17.060
  • Well, after you confront yourself Paul says you
  • 00:14:17.070 --> 00:14:21.040
  • crucify yourself.
  • 00:14:21.050 --> 00:14:23.150
  • You crucify yourself.
  • 00:14:23.160 --> 00:14:24.270
  • He says this in verse 24, "Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
  • 00:14:24.280 --> 00:14:29.080
  • crucified the sinful nature, the flesh, with its passions
  • 00:14:29.090 --> 00:14:33.220
  • and desires."
  • 00:14:33.230 --> 00:14:36.080
  • Now that's a very fresh look at self.
  • 00:14:36.090 --> 00:14:38.220
  • Paul said, you know what?
  • 00:14:38.230 --> 00:14:40.050
  • There's only one way to get you under control.
  • 00:14:40.060 --> 00:14:42.130
  • You know what you gotta do?
  • 00:14:42.140 --> 00:14:43.150
  • You've gotta nail you to a cross.
  • 00:14:43.160 --> 00:14:46.150
  • You have got to crucify you and the only way that self will
  • 00:14:46.160 --> 00:14:50.250
  • ever come under control is when it dies but it can only died
  • 00:14:50.260 --> 00:14:54.290
  • by crucifixion.
  • 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:56.070
  • And let me warn you something, I've learned this in my life.
  • 00:14:56.080 --> 00:14:58.180
  • It is not easy to kill self and self dies hard.
  • 00:14:58.190 --> 00:15:05.170
  • Somebody put it this way.
  • 00:15:05.180 --> 00:15:07.160
  • The last enemy destroyed in the believer is self.
  • 00:15:07.170 --> 00:15:11.240
  • It dies hard.
  • 00:15:11.250 --> 00:15:14.170
  • It will make any concessions if allowed to live.
  • 00:15:14.180 --> 00:15:18.040
  • Self will permit the believer to do anything, give anything,
  • 00:15:18.050 --> 00:15:22.110
  • sacrifice anything, suffer anything, be anything, go
  • 00:15:22.120 --> 00:15:27.230
  • anywhere, take any liberties, bear any crosses, afflict soul
  • 00:15:27.240 --> 00:15:32.160
  • and body to any degree-- anything if it can only live.
  • 00:15:32.170 --> 00:15:38.260
  • I'm telling you as a pastor, someone has walked with the Lord
  • 00:15:38.270 --> 00:15:42.020
  • for a long time, I still battle me everyday.
  • 00:15:42.030 --> 00:15:48.210
  • I battle selfishness, I battled lust, I battle anger.
  • 00:15:48.220 --> 00:15:54.200
  • I battle the lack of self-control.
  • 00:15:54.210 --> 00:15:56.160
  • I do it every single day.
  • 00:15:56.170 --> 00:15:58.130
  • You know why?
  • 00:15:58.140 --> 00:15:59.190
  • Because it goes against our nature to enjoy the one thing we
  • 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:03.190
  • enjoy the most.
  • 00:16:03.200 --> 00:16:04.200
  • And you know what we enjoy the most in life?
  • 00:16:04.210 --> 00:16:07.120
  • Us.
  • 00:16:07.130 --> 00:16:08.130
  • You know what you enjoy in life most?
  • 00:16:08.140 --> 00:16:10.110
  • You.
  • 00:16:10.120 --> 00:16:11.120
  • You know what I enjoy life most?
  • 00:16:11.130 --> 00:16:12.280
  • Me.
  • 00:16:12.290 --> 00:16:14.000
  • And I really believe that the real key is found
  • 00:16:14.010 --> 00:16:15.210
  • in an earlier verse which is one of my favorites in this
  • 00:16:15.220 --> 00:16:18.100
  • entire book.
  • 00:16:18.110 --> 00:16:19.110
  • Paul said, "I have been crucified with Christ."
  • 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:22.080
  • Obviously, he didn't mean literally, he didn't mean
  • 00:16:22.090 --> 00:16:25.080
  • physically, he meant spiritually.
  • 00:16:25.090 --> 00:16:27.090
  • "I've been crucified with Christ."
  • 00:16:27.100 --> 00:16:28.250
  • The old me has been nailed to the cross and I in my flesh,
  • 00:16:28.260 --> 00:16:32.230
  • "I no longer live but Christ lives in me."
  • 00:16:32.240 --> 00:16:38.050
  • So let me paint this picture for you.
  • 00:16:38.060 --> 00:16:41.120
  • I want you to imagine that your body is a house and inside
  • 00:16:41.130 --> 00:16:45.230
  • of you there are two pieces of furniture in that house.
  • 00:16:45.240 --> 00:16:48.190
  • There is a throne and there is a cross.
  • 00:16:48.200 --> 00:16:53.020
  • Now this is the reality for all of us right now where we are
  • 00:16:53.030 --> 00:16:56.180
  • in our lives.
  • 00:16:56.190 --> 00:16:59.030
  • Either Christ is on the throne of our lives and we are
  • 00:16:59.040 --> 00:17:05.290
  • on the cross or Christ is on the cross and we are
  • 00:17:06.000 --> 00:17:13.060
  • on the throne.
  • 00:17:13.070 --> 00:17:14.130
  • I'll tell you right now what's true about you this very second.
  • 00:17:14.140 --> 00:17:17.140
  • Either Christ is on the throne of your life and you're
  • 00:17:17.150 --> 00:17:20.110
  • on the cross.
  • 00:17:20.120 --> 00:17:21.230
  • Or you're on the throne of your life and he's on the cross.
  • 00:17:21.240 --> 00:17:24.270
  • One of those two things is true.
  • 00:17:24.280 --> 00:17:26.220
  • In other words, either you're dead to you or you're dead
  • 00:17:26.230 --> 00:17:31.190
  • to him.
  • 00:17:31.200 --> 00:17:32.230
  • And here's what you need to understand: self will always
  • 00:17:32.240 --> 00:17:36.100
  • want the front row of the funeral but the only
  • 00:17:36.110 --> 00:17:39.180
  • proper place for self is the casket.
  • 00:17:39.190 --> 00:17:42.270
  • You know, many times when I'm counseling a couple that's going
  • 00:17:42.280 --> 00:17:47.030
  • to get married, I always surprise them 'cause I sit them
  • 00:17:47.040 --> 00:17:50.010
  • down and I say now there's something that has to take place
  • 00:17:50.020 --> 00:17:53.120
  • before the wedding.
  • 00:17:53.130 --> 00:17:54.290
  • And they'll say what's that?
  • 00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:56.160
  • And I'll say, well, two funerals.
  • 00:17:56.170 --> 00:17:58.200
  • And they'll look at me like I'm crazy and I said yup, you've
  • 00:17:58.210 --> 00:18:02.080
  • gotta have two funerals before you have the wedding
  • 00:18:02.090 --> 00:18:04.010
  • or you won't have a very good marriage.
  • 00:18:04.020 --> 00:18:05.230
  • Now so, what do you mean?
  • 00:18:05.240 --> 00:18:07.190
  • And I'll say to the husband first, to the future husband,
  • 00:18:07.200 --> 00:18:10.090
  • to the man, I'll say okay, bud, you need to die to you.
  • 00:18:10.100 --> 00:18:15.010
  • And then I looked to that potential bride and I say, okay,
  • 00:18:15.020 --> 00:18:17.110
  • lady you need to die to you.
  • 00:18:17.120 --> 00:18:20.230
  • They say well, why is that so important?
  • 00:18:20.240 --> 00:18:22.250
  • I said because if you want to be happy--and I'll look
  • 00:18:22.260 --> 00:18:24.250
  • at the man--I'll say you've got to put her before you.
  • 00:18:24.260 --> 00:18:28.130
  • Then I'll look at the woman and I'll say now if you want
  • 00:18:28.140 --> 00:18:30.100
  • to be happy, you've gotta put him before you.
  • 00:18:30.110 --> 00:18:33.070
  • And the only way that will ever happen, the only way you will
  • 00:18:33.080 --> 00:18:36.270
  • put her before you is if you die to you.
  • 00:18:36.280 --> 00:18:39.240
  • And the only way you will put him before you is if you
  • 00:18:39.250 --> 00:18:42.110
  • die to you.
  • 00:18:42.120 --> 00:18:44.010
  • And once you do that, once you confront yourself, and once you
  • 00:18:44.020 --> 00:18:51.030
  • crucify yourself, you put self where self belongs: on a cross
  • 00:18:51.040 --> 00:18:57.140
  • in the casket.
  • 00:18:57.150 --> 00:18:58.200
  • Once you do that, then Paul says you can control yourself.
  • 00:18:58.210 --> 00:19:04.100
  • See, the reason why we never get to step three is either we
  • 00:19:04.110 --> 00:19:07.090
  • refuse to confront ourself, we don't want to admit we're
  • 00:19:07.100 --> 00:19:09.260
  • the problem, but then even if we do we just kinda wanna stick our
  • 00:19:09.270 --> 00:19:13.050
  • head in the sand and pretend it really doesn't happen or we just
  • 00:19:13.060 --> 00:19:16.020
  • enjoy pleasuring our self so much, we enjoy indulging
  • 00:19:16.030 --> 00:19:19.010
  • ourselves so much, we enjoy joy getting our selfish way so much,
  • 00:19:19.020 --> 00:19:23.000
  • we just don't want to give it up, and when you do that you'll
  • 00:19:23.010 --> 00:19:25.220
  • never get to the third step but here's what Paul promises.
  • 00:19:25.230 --> 00:19:29.280
  • If you'll man up or a woman up and confront yourself
  • 00:19:29.290 --> 00:19:34.170
  • and admit I am my biggest problem and then will you
  • 00:19:34.180 --> 00:19:39.060
  • crucify yourself as hard as it is when you say to yourself,
  • 00:19:39.070 --> 00:19:42.170
  • "You are going to die now," then you can control yourself.
  • 00:19:42.180 --> 00:19:50.020
  • Now the Greek word for self-control actually comes
  • 00:19:50.030 --> 00:19:52.210
  • from a word that literally means strength or might is often
  • 00:19:52.220 --> 00:19:56.080
  • translated dominion or to dominate.
  • 00:19:56.090 --> 00:20:00.000
  • Self-control simply means that when you dominate yourself
  • 00:20:00.010 --> 00:20:04.000
  • rather than letting yourself dominate you.
  • 00:20:04.010 --> 00:20:06.200
  • And by the way, one is gonna dominate.
  • 00:20:06.210 --> 00:20:10.080
  • Either self is gonna dominate you or you're going to
  • 00:20:10.090 --> 00:20:13.080
  • dominate self.
  • 00:20:13.090 --> 00:20:14.280
  • You cannot compromise with self, you can't coddle self, you can't
  • 00:20:14.290 --> 00:20:19.150
  • kinda meet self halfway.
  • 00:20:19.160 --> 00:20:21.030
  • Either you're gonna dominate self or self is going
  • 00:20:21.040 --> 00:20:23.180
  • to dominate you.
  • 00:20:23.190 --> 00:20:24.190
  • And the simple way to do that is found in verse 25.
  • 00:20:24.200 --> 00:20:28.050
  • Paul says, "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep
  • 00:20:28.060 --> 00:20:32.240
  • in step with the Spirit."
  • 00:20:32.250 --> 00:20:35.160
  • Now here's the beautiful thing, you ready?
  • 00:20:35.170 --> 00:20:39.050
  • Self-control is not a work.
  • 00:20:39.060 --> 00:20:41.050
  • It's not something you kinda energize yourself to do.
  • 00:20:41.060 --> 00:20:43.290
  • It's not even something you try to do.
  • 00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:45.170
  • You ready for this?
  • 00:20:45.180 --> 00:20:47.020
  • Self-control is not a work, self-control is a walk.
  • 00:20:47.030 --> 00:20:52.070
  • It's just walking in the Spirit.
  • 00:20:52.080 --> 00:20:54.120
  • It's just living in the Spirit and the way you control yourself
  • 00:20:54.130 --> 00:20:58.210
  • is you crucify then you take whatever is left after you
  • 00:20:58.220 --> 00:21:01.280
  • crucify and you surrendered it to the Spirit of God.
  • 00:21:01.290 --> 00:21:05.130
  • That's why I want you to hear this: self cannot be controlled
  • 00:21:05.140 --> 00:21:08.230
  • from without.
  • 00:21:08.240 --> 00:21:10.210
  • That's why people say, "I can change."
  • 00:21:10.220 --> 00:21:13.070
  • No you can't.
  • 00:21:13.080 --> 00:21:15.000
  • "I can do better."
  • 00:21:15.010 --> 00:21:16.200
  • No, you can't.
  • 00:21:16.210 --> 00:21:18.050
  • "I can make this work."
  • 00:21:18.060 --> 00:21:19.220
  • No, you can't.
  • 00:21:19.230 --> 00:21:21.140
  • Self cannot be controlled from without, it can only be
  • 00:21:21.150 --> 00:21:24.240
  • controlled from within.
  • 00:21:24.250 --> 00:21:26.080
  • Here's why: self-control is really Spirit control.
  • 00:21:26.090 --> 00:21:31.040
  • Self-control is really Spirit control and the way
  • 00:21:31.050 --> 00:21:33.280
  • to self-control is to surrender to the Spirit's control.
  • 00:21:33.290 --> 00:21:38.050
  • By the way, that really is the difference-- if you want
  • 00:21:38.060 --> 00:21:42.060
  • to know the real difference between a follower of Jesus
  • 00:21:42.070 --> 00:21:44.210
  • and a non follower.
  • 00:21:44.220 --> 00:21:46.030
  • If you want to know the real difference between a believer
  • 00:21:46.040 --> 00:21:48.200
  • and unbeliever, it's real simple.
  • 00:21:48.210 --> 00:21:51.180
  • If you're not a follower of Jesus, self calls the shots.
  • 00:21:51.190 --> 00:21:56.060
  • But if you are a follower of Jesus, the Spirit calls
  • 00:21:56.070 --> 00:21:59.280
  • the shots.
  • 00:21:59.290 --> 00:22:01.070
  • So for example, when it comes to the tongue, we won't exercise
  • 00:22:01.080 --> 00:22:05.090
  • verbal control.
  • 00:22:05.100 --> 00:22:07.100
  • Will Rogers put it best.
  • 00:22:07.110 --> 00:22:08.190
  • You know what he said?
  • 00:22:08.200 --> 00:22:09.220
  • I Love this, Will Rogers said, "Never miss a chance
  • 00:22:09.230 --> 00:22:11.290
  • to shut up."
  • 00:22:12.000 --> 00:22:13.080
  • I love that.
  • 00:22:13.090 --> 00:22:14.090
  • Never miss a chance to shut up.
  • 00:22:14.100 --> 00:22:16.060
  • When it comes to our taste we'll exercise portion control,
  • 00:22:16.070 --> 00:22:20.020
  • with God's help you quit overeating.
  • 00:22:20.030 --> 00:22:22.170
  • With respect to our temper, we exercise emotional control.
  • 00:22:22.180 --> 00:22:26.080
  • With respect to our thoughts, we exercise mental control.
  • 00:22:26.090 --> 00:22:29.170
  • With respect to temptation, we exercise spiritual control.
  • 00:22:29.180 --> 00:22:33.210
  • I remember years ago--I don't know where I found it--but I
  • 00:22:33.220 --> 00:22:36.250
  • read the statement, I thought, boy, that is so good.
  • 00:22:36.260 --> 00:22:39.180
  • God mightily uses those who stay cool in a hot place, sweet
  • 00:22:39.190 --> 00:22:45.130
  • in a sour place, and little in a big place.
  • 00:22:45.140 --> 00:22:49.150
  • Now here's what I want to ask you to do.
  • 00:22:49.160 --> 00:22:52.140
  • Be honest with yourself, but let's go back to confront
  • 00:22:52.150 --> 00:22:54.190
  • self for just a moment.
  • 00:22:54.200 --> 00:22:57.170
  • What is one area of your life you know it's out of control?
  • 00:22:57.180 --> 00:23:03.270
  • Now if you can't think of any let me make some
  • 00:23:03.280 --> 00:23:05.180
  • suggestions, alright?
  • 00:23:05.190 --> 00:23:07.220
  • Your health.
  • 00:23:07.230 --> 00:23:08.280
  • Is your weight where it ought to be?
  • 00:23:08.290 --> 00:23:10.200
  • Are you exercising?
  • 00:23:10.210 --> 00:23:12.100
  • Is your body a temple of the Holy Spirit or a run
  • 00:23:12.110 --> 00:23:14.200
  • down shack?
  • 00:23:14.210 --> 00:23:16.280
  • How about your finances?
  • 00:23:16.290 --> 00:23:18.150
  • Oh, wait a minute, you say, "Oh man, finance
  • 00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:20.180
  • is in great shape.
  • 00:23:20.190 --> 00:23:21.190
  • Got a big 401K.
  • 00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:23.030
  • Man, I got a big pension plan, I got a lot of savings, got all my
  • 00:23:23.040 --> 00:23:26.180
  • stuff paid for.
  • 00:23:26.190 --> 00:23:27.260
  • I could retire and sit around and do nothing."
  • 00:23:27.270 --> 00:23:30.200
  • Then your finances are out of control because if you're
  • 00:23:30.210 --> 00:23:32.260
  • not giving generously to God's work, your finances are
  • 00:23:32.270 --> 00:23:35.160
  • out of control.
  • 00:23:35.170 --> 00:23:36.180
  • How 'bout another one?
  • 00:23:36.190 --> 00:23:37.190
  • How 'bout your emotions?
  • 00:23:37.200 --> 00:23:39.020
  • You got any unrestrained bitterness in your life?
  • 00:23:39.030 --> 00:23:41.060
  • Any unresolved anger?
  • 00:23:41.070 --> 00:23:42.270
  • You have a problem with jealousy because somebody who's got more
  • 00:23:42.280 --> 00:23:45.070
  • than you do?
  • 00:23:45.080 --> 00:23:46.080
  • Are your emotions under control?
  • 00:23:46.090 --> 00:23:47.220
  • How 'bout your time?
  • 00:23:47.230 --> 00:23:50.070
  • Are you using your time wisely or wastefully?
  • 00:23:50.080 --> 00:23:54.090
  • And then once you're honest with yourself to say yeah, you
  • 00:23:54.100 --> 00:23:56.160
  • know, these are areas where I'm just not in control, then here's
  • 00:23:56.170 --> 00:23:59.170
  • what I want you to ask: what can I do in the next year, the next
  • 00:23:59.180 --> 00:24:05.250
  • quarter, the next month, the next week--or maybe even
  • 00:24:05.260 --> 00:24:10.270
  • and the best time to start is today--what can I do today
  • 00:24:10.280 --> 00:24:14.050
  • to exercise self-control?
  • 00:24:14.060 --> 00:24:16.240
  • And I want to get very practical.
  • 00:24:16.250 --> 00:24:18.180
  • I found one of the greatest ways to exercise self-control in my
  • 00:24:18.190 --> 00:24:20.270
  • life is just to hit the pause button.
  • 00:24:20.280 --> 00:24:23.130
  • It may be a three second pause, a three minute pause, it may be
  • 00:24:23.140 --> 00:24:26.090
  • a three hour pause, it may be a three day pause, but this is
  • 00:24:26.100 --> 00:24:28.280
  • a pause where you just stop and you say, okay, let me
  • 00:24:28.290 --> 00:24:31.180
  • take an assessment.
  • 00:24:31.190 --> 00:24:32.190
  • Let me think this through.
  • 00:24:32.200 --> 00:24:33.290
  • What are the consequences if I do what I'm thinking
  • 00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:36.170
  • about doing?
  • 00:24:36.180 --> 00:24:37.220
  • And then you need to decide do I really want to suffer
  • 00:24:37.230 --> 00:24:40.250
  • the consequences of that action?
  • 00:24:40.260 --> 00:24:43.070
  • You know as I look back on my life some of the greatest words
  • 00:24:43.080 --> 00:24:47.030
  • are the ones I never said.
  • 00:24:47.040 --> 00:24:49.200
  • Some of the greatest letters are the ones I never sent.
  • 00:24:49.210 --> 00:24:53.130
  • Some of the greatest actions are the ones I didn't it, and I
  • 00:24:53.140 --> 00:24:56.150
  • wanna remind you none of these qualities are possible-- love,
  • 00:24:56.160 --> 00:25:00.140
  • joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
  • 00:25:00.150 --> 00:25:04.270
  • gentleness, self-control-- none of those are possible apart
  • 00:25:04.280 --> 00:25:08.140
  • from the Son of God and the Spirit of God.
  • 00:25:08.150 --> 00:25:11.170
  • See, Jesus died for you so you could die to you.
  • 00:25:11.180 --> 00:25:14.200
  • Did you hear that?
  • 00:25:14.210 --> 00:25:15.210
  • Jesus died for you so you can die to you.
  • 00:25:15.220 --> 00:25:19.260
  • Jesus was raised from the dead so you and I could live a life
  • 00:25:19.270 --> 00:25:24.060
  • that is tasty.
  • 00:25:24.070 --> 00:25:25.200
  • When you give your life to the Son of God he will give
  • 00:25:25.210 --> 00:25:29.040
  • to you the Spirit of God.
  • 00:25:29.050 --> 00:25:30.280
  • So you can be fruitful for the glory of God and live
  • 00:25:30.290 --> 00:25:34.050
  • a life that will not only bless you, it will be a blessing
  • 00:25:34.060 --> 00:25:37.100
  • to others and I want you to believe this.
  • 00:25:37.110 --> 00:25:38.230
  • Listen to me, you can live in such a way that people will
  • 00:25:38.240 --> 00:25:44.210
  • always be happy to see you come, they'll always
  • 00:25:44.220 --> 00:25:49.040
  • be sad to see you leave.
  • 00:25:49.050 --> 00:25:51.170
  • 00:25:53.050 --> 00:25:59.140
  • 00:25:59.150 --> 00:26:05.160
  • 00:26:05.170 --> 00:26:11.150
  • 00:26:11.160 --> 00:26:17.150
  • 00:26:17.160 --> 00:26:23.150
  • 00:26:23.160 --> 00:26:29.150
  • 00:26:29.160 --> 00:26:34.160
  • James: If you've ever lost your cool or lost control of your
  • 00:26:35.100 --> 00:26:37.190
  • tongue or emotions, join the club.
  • 00:26:37.200 --> 00:26:40.190
  • The apostle Paul was the greatest evangelist who ever
  • 00:26:40.200 --> 00:26:42.240
  • lived and yet he writes about losing his cool in Romans
  • 00:26:42.250 --> 00:26:45.290
  • chapter 7.
  • 00:26:46.000 --> 00:26:47.100
  • The key to keeping cool, calm, and collected is to practice
  • 00:26:47.110 --> 00:26:50.230
  • self-control everyday because in doing so you can become more
  • 00:26:50.240 --> 00:26:54.130
  • like Christ, but here's what you need to remember, if you are
  • 00:26:54.140 --> 00:26:58.170
  • a believer in Jesus you have the very Spirit of God inside
  • 00:26:58.180 --> 00:27:02.160
  • of you who can help you stay in control.
  • 00:27:02.170 --> 00:27:05.280
  • Well, this concludes our series on the fruit of the Spirit.
  • 00:27:05.290 --> 00:27:08.280
