  • ROBERT MORRIS: In other words, how do you forgive?
  • 00:00:01.240 --> 00:00:03.110
  • Well, forgiveness is giving grace.
  • 00:00:03.140 --> 00:00:05.170
  • So, how do you give grace?
  • 00:00:05.200 --> 00:00:06.220
  • You have to receive grace.
  • 00:00:06.250 --> 00:00:08.040
  • You can't give it if you haven't received it.
  • 00:00:08.070 --> 00:00:10.070
  • If you have a problem giving forgiveness,
  • 00:00:10.100 --> 00:00:12.170
  • you have a problem receiving forgiveness.
  • 00:00:12.200 --> 00:00:14.140
  • 00:00:14.170 --> 00:00:28.260
  • ROBERT: We are in a series called "Relationship Through
  • 00:00:28.290 --> 00:00:33.040
  • God's Top Ten", so we're talking about that God gave
  • 00:00:33.070 --> 00:00:35.290
  • us the Ten Commandments, but I believe there's
  • 00:00:36.020 --> 00:00:38.060
  • a principle behind every commandment,
  • 00:00:38.090 --> 00:00:41.070
  • and it's a principle of relationship.
  • 00:00:41.100 --> 00:00:44.030
  • And so, this week I want to talk to you about
  • 00:00:44.060 --> 00:00:46.030
  • "The Principle of Love", and we are now
  • 00:00:46.060 --> 00:00:49.220
  • on the sixth commandment, and the sixth commandment,
  • 00:00:49.250 --> 00:00:53.080
  • in Exodus 20:13, "You shall not murder".
  • 00:00:53.110 --> 00:00:57.250
  • I want to explain something about this, by the way,
  • 00:00:57.280 --> 00:00:59.280
  • that this is different from you shall not kill.
  • 00:01:00.030 --> 00:01:03.030
  • The Bible doesn't say thou shalt not kill.
  • 00:01:03.060 --> 00:01:05.080
  • The Old King James translated it that way,
  • 00:01:05.110 --> 00:01:07.210
  • but there's a difference between murder and killing,
  • 00:01:07.240 --> 00:01:10.090
  • and murder means that you take a life when you don't
  • 00:01:10.120 --> 00:01:12.240
  • have the authority to take that life.
  • 00:01:12.270 --> 00:01:15.140
  • But, there are times when law enforcement,
  • 00:01:15.170 --> 00:01:18.220
  • military engaged in war, the judicial system, takes a life,
  • 00:01:18.250 --> 00:01:25.120
  • and that is different than murder.
  • 00:01:25.150 --> 00:01:27.270
  • Even the Bible implemented capital punishment.
  • 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:31.170
  • So, please understand that we are free today in America
  • 00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:36.100
  • because men and women fought for our freedom,
  • 00:01:36.130 --> 00:01:39.100
  • and they were not violating the sixth commandment when they were
  • 00:01:39.130 --> 00:01:41.210
  • fighting for our freedom, because they weren't
  • 00:01:41.240 --> 00:01:44.020
  • murdering, okay?
  • 00:01:44.050 --> 00:01:49.000
  • So, I'm calling this "The Principle of Love",
  • 00:01:49.030 --> 00:01:52.190
  • and the reason I'm calling it "The Principle of Love"
  • 00:01:52.220 --> 00:01:56.130
  • is because love is the opposite of murder, because the Bible
  • 00:01:56.160 --> 00:02:01.230
  • links murder to hate, and I'm going to show you that,
  • 00:02:01.260 --> 00:02:05.040
  • all right?
  • 00:02:05.070 --> 00:02:06.020
  • So, I'll get to Luke 7 in a moment.
  • 00:02:06.050 --> 00:02:08.010
  • I'll show you a couple of Scriptures.
  • 00:02:08.040 --> 00:02:09.150
  • 1 John 3:15, "Whoever hates his brother is a murderer."
  • 00:02:09.180 --> 00:02:15.050
  • And then to show you how it links the opposite of these
  • 00:02:15.080 --> 00:02:18.040
  • principles here of murder, the opposite to love,
  • 00:02:18.070 --> 00:02:21.160
  • it lists the last five commandments, which we're
  • 00:02:21.190 --> 00:02:23.140
  • on now, starting the sixth through the tenth,
  • 00:02:23.170 --> 00:02:25.170
  • in Romans 13:9.
  • 00:02:25.200 --> 00:02:27.150
  • "For the commandments, "You shall not commit adultery,
  • 00:02:27.180 --> 00:02:29.280
  • You shall not murder, You shall not steal,
  • 00:02:30.010 --> 00:02:31.290
  • You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet",
  • 00:02:32.020 --> 00:02:34.110
  • those are six through ten there, "and if there is any other
  • 00:02:34.140 --> 00:02:37.040
  • commandment, they are all summed up in this saying,
  • 00:02:37.070 --> 00:02:39.200
  • namely, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
  • 00:02:39.230 --> 00:02:43.240
  • Now, I normally have three points.
  • 00:02:43.270 --> 00:02:46.100
  • I have a rhythm, kind of, that I go through.
  • 00:02:46.130 --> 00:02:48.280
  • But I have five points today.
  • 00:02:49.010 --> 00:02:50.170
  • But I'm going to have to move kind of quickly through
  • 00:02:50.200 --> 00:02:53.140
  • the first three to set up a foundation for the last two,
  • 00:02:53.170 --> 00:02:57.030
  • all right?
  • 00:02:57.060 --> 00:02:57.270
  • So, "You shall not murder".
  • 00:02:58.000 --> 00:03:01.000
  • I'm really not worried about someone in our congregation
  • 00:03:01.030 --> 00:03:05.200
  • murdering someone.
  • 00:03:05.230 --> 00:03:07.120
  • I know I heard this one lady.
  • 00:03:07.150 --> 00:03:09.270
  • She said that she'd been married for 60 years.
  • 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:12.170
  • Her husband passed away and someone asked her,
  • 00:03:12.200 --> 00:03:14.180
  • did you ever think about divorce?
  • 00:03:14.210 --> 00:03:16.160
  • She said, no, I never thought about divorce.
  • 00:03:16.190 --> 00:03:18.170
  • Murder, yes, but not divorce.
  • 00:03:18.200 --> 00:03:21.170
  • But she was just joking.
  • 00:03:21.200 --> 00:03:22.250
  • So, I'm not worried about you committing murder.
  • 00:03:22.280 --> 00:03:28.020
  • I'm worried though, and concerned, about the things
  • 00:03:28.050 --> 00:03:31.030
  • that lead to murder, such as hate and unforgiveness,
  • 00:03:31.060 --> 00:03:37.070
  • and some things like -- that's what Satan's trying to do.
  • 00:03:37.100 --> 00:03:39.160
  • There's a path.
  • 00:03:39.190 --> 00:03:40.170
  • So, I'm going to show you the path, all right?
  • 00:03:40.200 --> 00:03:43.280
  • So, here's point number one.
  • 00:03:44.010 --> 00:03:45.260
  • Hate precedes murder.
  • 00:03:45.290 --> 00:03:50.110
  • Hate precedes, goes before, murder.
  • 00:03:50.140 --> 00:03:56.000
  • This is a story of Joseph, Genesis 37:4-5.
  • 00:03:56.030 --> 00:04:00.180
  • "But when his brothers saw that their father loved him
  • 00:04:00.210 --> 00:04:02.250
  • more than all his brothers, they hated him."
  • 00:04:02.280 --> 00:04:06.260
  • So, the brothers of Joseph "hated him and could not
  • 00:04:06.290 --> 00:04:09.190
  • speak peaceably to him.
  • 00:04:09.220 --> 00:04:11.060
  • Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers,
  • 00:04:11.090 --> 00:04:13.190
  • and they hated him even more."
  • 00:04:13.220 --> 00:04:16.270
  • So, they hate him.
  • 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:18.080
  • Then you look down at Verse 18, "Now when they saw him afar off,
  • 00:04:18.110 --> 00:04:21.070
  • even before he came near them,
  • 00:04:21.100 --> 00:04:22.280
  • they conspired against him to kill him."
  • 00:04:23.010 --> 00:04:27.120
  • Okay, so why did they conspire to murder him?
  • 00:04:27.150 --> 00:04:29.260
  • Because they hated him.
  • 00:04:29.290 --> 00:04:32.160
  • Let me show it to you in the law.
  • 00:04:32.190 --> 00:04:34.230
  • Deuteronomy 19:11-12, "But if anyone hates
  • 00:04:34.260 --> 00:04:38.110
  • his neighbor, lies in wait for him, rises against him
  • 00:04:38.140 --> 00:04:41.160
  • and strikes him mortally, so that he dies,
  • 00:04:41.190 --> 00:04:44.170
  • and then he flees to one of these cities, then the elders
  • 00:04:44.200 --> 00:04:46.250
  • of his city shall send and bring him from there,
  • 00:04:46.280 --> 00:04:49.270
  • and deliver him over to the hand of the avenger of blood,
  • 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:54.070
  • that he may die."
  • 00:04:54.100 --> 00:04:55.210
  • Capital punishment for murder.
  • 00:04:55.240 --> 00:04:57.250
  • That is a person -- so it shows he hated him
  • 00:04:57.280 --> 00:05:01.140
  • and here's what it's saying.
  • 00:05:01.170 --> 00:05:03.090
  • We know he murdered him, because he hated him.
  • 00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:06.050
  • Watch how it shows, again, hate and murder.
  • 00:05:06.080 --> 00:05:08.200
  • Joshua 20:5, "Then if the avenger of blood pursues him,
  • 00:05:08.230 --> 00:05:12.270
  • they shall not deliver the slayer into his hand,
  • 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:15.210
  • because he struck his neighbor unintentionally,
  • 00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:18.190
  • but did not hate him beforehand."
  • 00:05:18.220 --> 00:05:22.030
  • See, the way they knew if you murdered someone
  • 00:05:22.060 --> 00:05:24.100
  • was if you hated him, or if it was an accident
  • 00:05:24.130 --> 00:05:26.280
  • and you struck him and he died unintentionally.
  • 00:05:27.010 --> 00:05:28.240
  • So, hate precedes murder.
  • 00:05:28.270 --> 00:05:32.060
  • So, what precedes hate?
  • 00:05:32.090 --> 00:05:35.100
  • Number two, anger precedes hate.
  • 00:05:35.130 --> 00:05:40.180
  • Before you hate someone, you get angry at them.
  • 00:05:40.210 --> 00:05:44.140
  • The first murder in the Bible was because of anger,
  • 00:05:44.170 --> 00:05:49.200
  • Cain and Abel.
  • 00:05:49.230 --> 00:05:51.160
  • Genesis 4:3, "And in the process of time it came to pass
  • 00:05:51.190 --> 00:05:56.020
  • that Cain brought an offering of the fruit
  • 00:05:56.050 --> 00:05:58.060
  • of the ground to the Lord."
  • 00:05:58.090 --> 00:05:59.130
  • Notice, by the way, it was not a first fruit offering.
  • 00:05:59.160 --> 00:06:01.260
  • "Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock
  • 00:06:01.290 --> 00:06:04.180
  • and of their fat.
  • 00:06:04.210 --> 00:06:05.210
  • And the Lord respected Abel and his offering,
  • 00:06:05.240 --> 00:06:07.200
  • but He did not respect Cain and his offering.
  • 00:06:07.230 --> 00:06:10.020
  • And Cain was very angry", angry, "and his countenance fell."
  • 00:06:10.050 --> 00:06:17.100
  • And then in Verse 8, "Cain talked with Abel, his brother.
  • 00:06:17.130 --> 00:06:19.260
  • It came to pass when they were in the field that Cain
  • 00:06:19.290 --> 00:06:21.210
  • rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him."
  • 00:06:21.240 --> 00:06:26.210
  • He was angry, so he killed him.
  • 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:29.060
  • See?
  • 00:06:29.090 --> 00:06:30.080
  • Now, let me explain something to you.
  • 00:06:30.110 --> 00:06:31.250
  • Anger is an emotion, and you can actually be angry and not sin.
  • 00:06:31.280 --> 00:06:39.120
  • As a matter of fact, there's a verse that says,
  • 00:06:39.150 --> 00:06:42.050
  • "Be angry and do not sin."
  • 00:06:42.080 --> 00:06:45.020
  • So, it's not that anger is a sin,
  • 00:06:45.050 --> 00:06:47.290
  • it's what you do with the anger.
  • 00:06:48.020 --> 00:06:50.030
  • Have you ever known someone that has a tendency to just
  • 00:06:50.060 --> 00:06:55.100
  • kind of blow up at people?
  • 00:06:55.130 --> 00:06:57.260
  • Don't punch anyone in the ribs right now!
  • 00:06:57.290 --> 00:06:59.270
  • Or, let's just do it this way.
  • 00:07:00.020 --> 00:07:03.150
  • Or have you ever blown up?
  • 00:07:03.180 --> 00:07:06.090
  • Hello?
  • 00:07:06.120 --> 00:07:08.170
  • You don't want to say amen right now, do you?
  • 00:07:08.200 --> 00:07:10.210
  • Remember, this is church.
  • 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:12.070
  • All right.
  • 00:07:12.100 --> 00:07:13.030
  • So, we've all blown up.
  • 00:07:13.060 --> 00:07:15.070
  • Let me tell you why you blow up, or why a person has
  • 00:07:15.100 --> 00:07:17.200
  • a tendency to blow up a lot, because the person
  • 00:07:17.230 --> 00:07:20.150
  • has anger that's unresolved.
  • 00:07:20.180 --> 00:07:24.040
  • It's unresolved anger that's just sitting in you
  • 00:07:24.070 --> 00:07:28.060
  • that causes you to explode.
  • 00:07:28.090 --> 00:07:30.120
  • If we can get that anger out, then even when you go through
  • 00:07:30.150 --> 00:07:33.000
  • a tough time, you won't blow up
  • 00:07:33.030 --> 00:07:35.030
  • because there's not any anger in there for you to blow up.
  • 00:07:35.060 --> 00:07:37.120
  • So, we have to resolve it.
  • 00:07:37.150 --> 00:07:38.130
  • So, hate precedes murder.
  • 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:41.280
  • What precedes hate?
  • 00:07:42.010 --> 00:07:42.290
  • Anger.
  • 00:07:43.020 --> 00:07:44.050
  • Anger precedes hate.
  • 00:07:44.080 --> 00:07:45.160
  • Here's number three.
  • 00:07:45.190 --> 00:07:46.220
  • What precedes anger?
  • 00:07:46.250 --> 00:07:48.180
  • An offense precedes anger.
  • 00:07:48.210 --> 00:07:52.170
  • An offense precedes anger.
  • 00:07:52.200 --> 00:07:54.210
  • Cain was offended at God and at Abel.
  • 00:07:54.240 --> 00:07:59.230
  • That's why he got angry.
  • 00:07:59.260 --> 00:08:01.100
  • It offended him that God accepted Abel's offering
  • 00:08:01.130 --> 00:08:04.040
  • and not Cain's.
  • 00:08:04.070 --> 00:08:05.090
  • Okay, let me show you a couple of Scriptures.
  • 00:08:05.120 --> 00:08:07.270
  • Matthew 24:10, "And then many will be offended,
  • 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:12.050
  • and betray one another, and will hate one another."
  • 00:08:12.080 --> 00:08:16.260
  • They're offended, so now they hate people.
  • 00:08:16.290 --> 00:08:20.010
  • We read last week where Jesus talked about a prophet,
  • 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:22.170
  • it's not without honor except to his own family
  • 00:08:22.200 --> 00:08:25.010
  • and his own country, okay?
  • 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:26.220
  • And, they were offended.
  • 00:08:26.250 --> 00:08:28.240
  • Let me read a little bit of that again and pick up
  • 00:08:28.270 --> 00:08:31.210
  • on one of the words that we need to talk about.
  • 00:08:31.240 --> 00:08:34.040
  • Mark 6:2-3, "And when the Sabbath had come,
  • 00:08:34.070 --> 00:08:37.030
  • He began to teach in the synagogue.
  • 00:08:37.060 --> 00:08:39.030
  • And many hearing Him were astonished."
  • 00:08:39.060 --> 00:08:42.030
  • I actually said last weekend, now that's not a good word,
  • 00:08:42.060 --> 00:08:45.160
  • astonished.
  • 00:08:45.190 --> 00:08:46.130
  • That's not what you think as amazed.
  • 00:08:46.160 --> 00:08:47.190
  • It's not amazed.
  • 00:08:47.220 --> 00:08:48.110
  • It's a bad word, actually.
  • 00:08:48.140 --> 00:08:50.080
  • And I had no clue I was going to use it this week,
  • 00:08:50.110 --> 00:08:52.120
  • but I'm going to explain to you what astonished means.
  • 00:08:52.150 --> 00:08:54.280
  • "Many were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man
  • 00:08:55.010 --> 00:08:57.160
  • get these things?
  • 00:08:57.190 --> 00:08:58.180
  • And what wisdom is this which is given to Him,
  • 00:08:58.210 --> 00:09:00.260
  • that such mighty works are performed by His hands?
  • 00:09:00.290 --> 00:09:03.160
  • Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary,
  • 00:09:03.190 --> 00:09:06.190
  • the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon?
  • 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:09.110
  • Are not His sisters here with us?"
  • 00:09:09.140 --> 00:09:11.000
  • So they were offended at Him."
  • 00:09:11.030 --> 00:09:14.260
  • They were offended.
  • 00:09:14.290 --> 00:09:15.190
  • Okay.
  • 00:09:15.220 --> 00:09:16.260
  • This word, astonished, I'm going to give you the actual
  • 00:09:16.290 --> 00:09:18.030
  • definition from the Strong's Concordance.
  • 00:09:18.060 --> 00:09:20.040
  • Here's what it means.
  • 00:09:20.070 --> 00:09:21.090
  • It means to strike, in other words, to hit someone.
  • 00:09:21.120 --> 00:09:24.290
  • To strike someone, to expel by a blow, to drive out or away.
  • 00:09:25.020 --> 00:09:34.020
  • As He began to teach and have wisdom, they got angry.
  • 00:09:34.050 --> 00:09:38.210
  • You want to know why?
  • 00:09:38.240 --> 00:09:40.010
  • Because He was just a carpenter that grew up in their town.
  • 00:09:40.040 --> 00:09:43.160
  • And it offended them that this guy had so many people
  • 00:09:43.190 --> 00:09:48.190
  • following Him, and that He had such wisdom,
  • 00:09:48.220 --> 00:09:51.040
  • and He was just a carpenter.
  • 00:09:51.070 --> 00:09:52.280
  • And they got offended, so much so, listen to this.
  • 00:09:53.010 --> 00:09:56.000
  • It says they were astonished, and this is what it means,
  • 00:09:56.030 --> 00:09:59.050
  • that they wanted to hit Him.
  • 00:09:59.080 --> 00:10:02.010
  • They wanted to strike Him.
  • 00:10:02.040 --> 00:10:03.280
  • They wanted to drive Him out with blows.
  • 00:10:04.010 --> 00:10:06.200
  • This happened another time, same word, astonished.
  • 00:10:06.230 --> 00:10:09.130
  • I don't have time to read the whole chapter.
  • 00:10:09.160 --> 00:10:10.260
  • You can read it.
  • 00:10:10.290 --> 00:10:12.030
  • But in Luke 4, if you remember, He goes to His hometown.
  • 00:10:12.060 --> 00:10:15.060
  • Hometown, and He goes in the synagogue, and He takes
  • 00:10:15.090 --> 00:10:18.230
  • the Scriptures, and He reads from Isaiah,
  • 00:10:18.260 --> 00:10:22.120
  • and this is what He reads.
  • 00:10:22.150 --> 00:10:23.170
  • He reads a passage about the Messiah, and He reads,
  • 00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:27.150
  • "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed Me
  • 00:10:27.180 --> 00:10:31.100
  • to preach the Gospel to the poor, to open the blind eyes,
  • 00:10:31.130 --> 00:10:35.020
  • to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance
  • 00:10:35.050 --> 00:10:36.270
  • to the captives, to preach the acceptable
  • 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:39.000
  • year of the Lord."
  • 00:10:39.030 --> 00:10:40.010
  • Everyone knew that was about the Messiah.
  • 00:10:40.040 --> 00:10:41.220
  • Here was the problem.
  • 00:10:41.250 --> 00:10:42.230
  • It says that He closed the book and He said,
  • 00:10:42.260 --> 00:10:49.030
  • "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
  • 00:10:49.060 --> 00:10:53.080
  • So, here's what He was saying.
  • 00:10:53.110 --> 00:10:54.200
  • I'm Him.
  • 00:10:54.230 --> 00:10:57.220
  • I'm the Messiah.
  • 00:10:57.250 --> 00:10:59.280
  • And you know what they said?
  • 00:11:00.030 --> 00:11:00.250
  • The exact same thing.
  • 00:11:00.280 --> 00:11:02.120
  • They were astonished and they said, isn't this the carpenter?
  • 00:11:02.150 --> 00:11:06.240
  • Isn't this the guy that built a patio for me?
  • 00:11:06.270 --> 00:11:14.030
  • He thinks He's the Messiah?
  • 00:11:14.060 --> 00:11:16.080
  • And He wears a tool belt?
  • 00:11:16.110 --> 00:11:19.180
  • And now, watch, Luke 4:28-29.
  • 00:11:19.210 --> 00:11:23.030
  • "So all those in the synagogue, when they heard
  • 00:11:23.060 --> 00:11:24.250
  • these things, were filled with wrath", remember,
  • 00:11:24.280 --> 00:11:28.010
  • anger, "and they rose up and thrust Him out of the city,
  • 00:11:28.040 --> 00:11:33.130
  • and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city
  • 00:11:33.160 --> 00:11:35.240
  • was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff."
  • 00:11:35.270 --> 00:11:41.260
  • Anger.
  • 00:11:41.290 --> 00:11:43.040
  • Why?
  • 00:11:43.070 --> 00:11:44.020
  • They were offended.
  • 00:11:44.050 --> 00:11:44.280
  • Why were they offended?
  • 00:11:45.010 --> 00:11:46.190
  • Because He didn't meet their expectations.
  • 00:11:46.220 --> 00:11:49.120
  • He was saying something that they didn't understand,
  • 00:11:49.150 --> 00:11:51.230
  • and that brings me to the fourth point.
  • 00:11:51.260 --> 00:11:53.210
  • This is one we're going to really kind of drill down on.
  • 00:11:53.240 --> 00:11:57.050
  • So, we've got hate precedes murder, so hopefully no one's
  • 00:11:57.080 --> 00:12:01.280
  • ever going to get the point of murder,
  • 00:12:02.010 --> 00:12:04.000
  • but you might hate someone.
  • 00:12:04.030 --> 00:12:06.010
  • But what causes hate?
  • 00:12:06.040 --> 00:12:07.230
  • Anger does.
  • 00:12:07.260 --> 00:12:09.020
  • You get angry at someone and you don't resolve it correctly,
  • 00:12:09.050 --> 00:12:11.200
  • so now you hate them.
  • 00:12:11.230 --> 00:12:13.060
  • But what causes hate?
  • 00:12:13.090 --> 00:12:14.180
  • An offense.
  • 00:12:14.210 --> 00:12:16.030
  • But, what causes an offense?
  • 00:12:16.060 --> 00:12:18.140
  • So, number four, unfilled expectations precede offenses.
  • 00:12:18.170 --> 00:12:26.030
  • Unfulfilled expectations precede offenses.
  • 00:12:26.060 --> 00:12:32.090
  • Now, this is why I asked you to turn to Luke 7,
  • 00:12:32.120 --> 00:12:35.240
  • because this to me is one of the strangest passages in the Bible,
  • 00:12:35.270 --> 00:12:41.140
  • and one of the most enlightening.
  • 00:12:41.170 --> 00:12:43.290
  • Luke 7:18, "Then the disciples of John reported to him",
  • 00:12:44.020 --> 00:12:48.120
  • that's John the Baptist.
  • 00:12:48.150 --> 00:12:50.030
  • "Reported to him concerning all these things.
  • 00:12:50.060 --> 00:12:52.260
  • And John, calling two of his disciples to him,
  • 00:12:52.290 --> 00:12:55.170
  • sent them to Jesus, saying, "Are You the Coming One,
  • 00:12:55.200 --> 00:13:00.270
  • or do we look for another?"
  • 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:05.190
  • Now, I want you to think about this really well
  • 00:13:05.220 --> 00:13:07.230
  • for just a moment.
  • 00:13:07.260 --> 00:13:10.000
  • John the Baptist, who's Jesus' cousin -- John the Baptist
  • 00:13:10.030 --> 00:13:18.020
  • was filled with the Spirit in his mother's womb,
  • 00:13:18.050 --> 00:13:22.160
  • Elizabeth's womb, when Mary, Jesus' mother,
  • 00:13:22.190 --> 00:13:26.200
  • walked in the room when Jesus was in the womb.
  • 00:13:26.230 --> 00:13:30.140
  • John the Baptist is the one that when Jesus came
  • 00:13:30.170 --> 00:13:33.080
  • to be baptized by him, said, no, I shouldn't baptize You,
  • 00:13:33.110 --> 00:13:38.150
  • You should baptize me!
  • 00:13:38.180 --> 00:13:39.280
  • Right?
  • 00:13:40.010 --> 00:13:41.000
  • What was he saying?
  • 00:13:41.030 --> 00:13:42.230
  • You're the One!
  • 00:13:42.260 --> 00:13:45.040
  • You're the One!
  • 00:13:45.070 --> 00:13:46.090
  • There's the One, the Lamb of God.
  • 00:13:46.120 --> 00:13:48.040
  • There's the One.
  • 00:13:48.070 --> 00:13:49.130
  • Jesus said, baptize Me.
  • 00:13:49.160 --> 00:13:50.120
  • No, You're the One!
  • 00:13:50.150 --> 00:13:53.010
  • They came to John later, after Jesus began His ministry,
  • 00:13:53.040 --> 00:13:56.270
  • and they said, do you remember that guy you baptized?
  • 00:13:57.000 --> 00:14:00.290
  • He started a church down the road, and He's baptizing
  • 00:14:01.020 --> 00:14:04.130
  • more people than you are.
  • 00:14:04.160 --> 00:14:07.050
  • Do you remember what John's answer was?
  • 00:14:07.080 --> 00:14:09.000
  • I told you I'm not the one.
  • 00:14:09.030 --> 00:14:13.280
  • That's what he said!
  • 00:14:14.010 --> 00:14:14.290
  • I told you I'm not the one.
  • 00:14:15.020 --> 00:14:17.020
  • I told you He's the One.
  • 00:14:17.050 --> 00:14:19.190
  • Let me put it another way.
  • 00:14:19.220 --> 00:14:21.010
  • John's in prison for saying He's the One, and then He comes
  • 00:14:21.040 --> 00:14:26.080
  • to his city to have a revival, and He doesn't even have time
  • 00:14:26.110 --> 00:14:31.140
  • to visit His cousin in jail.
  • 00:14:31.170 --> 00:14:35.220
  • And He could have got him out.
  • 00:14:35.250 --> 00:14:38.250
  • He's the Messiah, He's the One.
  • 00:14:38.280 --> 00:14:40.090
  • Everybody knows He's the One.
  • 00:14:40.120 --> 00:14:42.140
  • And John's sitting there and he's saying, now,
  • 00:14:42.170 --> 00:14:44.050
  • how long has Jesus been here?
  • 00:14:44.080 --> 00:14:45.170
  • Seven days now.
  • 00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:48.030
  • Seven days.
  • 00:14:48.060 --> 00:14:53.000
  • Did you all mention to Him I was in jail?
  • 00:14:53.030 --> 00:14:56.280
  • Yeah, we told Him.
  • 00:14:57.010 --> 00:15:00.280
  • You go ask Jesus that John, cousin John,
  • 00:15:01.010 --> 00:15:08.230
  • wants to know if He's the One.
  • 00:15:08.260 --> 00:15:13.260
  • Jesus said, you go tell cousin John that the blind see,
  • 00:15:13.290 --> 00:15:19.050
  • the lame walk, the deaf hear, the dead are raised,
  • 00:15:19.080 --> 00:15:23.040
  • the poor have the Gospel preached to them,
  • 00:15:23.070 --> 00:15:25.070
  • and blessed is he who doesn't get his feelings hurt --
  • 00:15:25.100 --> 00:15:31.270
  • who doesn't get offended because of Me.
  • 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:36.030
  • It's pretty strong, isn't it?
  • 00:15:36.060 --> 00:15:37.140
  • It's kind of a cool passage, isn't it?
  • 00:15:37.170 --> 00:15:39.230
  • I'm sure one day I'll get to heaven and John the Baptist
  • 00:15:39.260 --> 00:15:41.120
  • is going to say, why did you tell everybody that that's
  • 00:15:41.150 --> 00:15:42.260
  • what I was upset about?
  • 00:15:42.290 --> 00:15:50.070
  • Unfulfilled expectations cause offenses.
  • 00:15:50.100 --> 00:15:54.290
  • He had an expectation that Jesus would come get him
  • 00:15:55.020 --> 00:15:58.190
  • out of jail, or come at least see him.
  • 00:15:58.220 --> 00:16:01.260
  • So when that expectation wasn't fulfilled -- listen.
  • 00:16:01.290 --> 00:16:05.110
  • Listen, I'm going to help you.
  • 00:16:05.140 --> 00:16:07.120
  • We have an expectation that our friend's going to do something.
  • 00:16:07.150 --> 00:16:10.140
  • He doesn't do it.
  • 00:16:10.170 --> 00:16:12.050
  • We're offended.
  • 00:16:12.080 --> 00:16:14.130
  • We have an expectation that our employer's
  • 00:16:14.160 --> 00:16:16.170
  • going to do something.
  • 00:16:16.200 --> 00:16:17.130
  • He doesn't do it.
  • 00:16:17.160 --> 00:16:18.160
  • Now we're offended.
  • 00:16:18.190 --> 00:16:20.230
  • We have an expectation that, you know,
  • 00:16:20.260 --> 00:16:23.140
  • some spiritual leader is going to do something.
  • 00:16:23.170 --> 00:16:25.050
  • He doesn't do it, and now we're offended.
  • 00:16:25.080 --> 00:16:27.120
  • And we can get offended sometimes over silly things,
  • 00:16:27.150 --> 00:16:30.070
  • you know?
  • 00:16:30.100 --> 00:16:31.200
  • I mean, you know, all of a sudden your wife's upset
  • 00:16:31.230 --> 00:16:34.280
  • and you say, what's wrong?
  • 00:16:35.010 --> 00:16:36.250
  • Well, what's wrong?
  • 00:16:36.280 --> 00:16:39.220
  • Jenny did not say one thing about the cake
  • 00:16:39.250 --> 00:16:42.030
  • that I took to the party.
  • 00:16:42.060 --> 00:16:47.120
  • Well, maybe she just had her hands full and she just forgot.
  • 00:16:47.150 --> 00:16:50.040
  • She knows better!
  • 00:16:50.070 --> 00:16:52.280
  • She knows better.
  • 00:16:53.010 --> 00:16:56.270
  • All of the sudden, we're offended.
  • 00:16:57.000 --> 00:16:58.140
  • Are you all following me?
  • 00:16:58.170 --> 00:17:00.030
  • It's amazing what gets us offended.
  • 00:17:00.060 --> 00:17:02.010
  • Did you know that someone in the Bible, is actually called
  • 00:17:02.040 --> 00:17:07.170
  • a person, a stumbling stone and a rock of offense?
  • 00:17:07.200 --> 00:17:16.210
  • Anyone know who it is?
  • 00:17:16.240 --> 00:17:18.210
  • Jesus.
  • 00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:21.200
  • Romans 9:33, "As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion
  • 00:17:21.230 --> 00:17:27.130
  • a stumbling stone and a rock of offense, and",
  • 00:17:27.160 --> 00:17:34.290
  • and the word and is a conjunction in the Greek
  • 00:17:35.020 --> 00:17:37.000
  • to be translated but, "but whoever believes in Him",
  • 00:17:37.030 --> 00:17:41.000
  • in the stumbling stone or the rock of offense,
  • 00:17:41.030 --> 00:17:44.140
  • "will not be put to shame."
  • 00:17:44.170 --> 00:17:46.210
  • Let me put it another way.
  • 00:17:46.240 --> 00:17:47.260
  • Jesus is either going to be in your life a stone you
  • 00:17:47.290 --> 00:17:50.260
  • stumble over, or a rock you build your house on.
  • 00:17:50.290 --> 00:17:55.140
  • That's tweetable!
  • 00:17:55.170 --> 00:18:01.090
  • I don't care if you tweet it.
  • 00:18:01.120 --> 00:18:02.140
  • No, I would just like to say that's a good statement.
  • 00:18:02.170 --> 00:18:05.250
  • And I get excited because you think, he's bragging on himself.
  • 00:18:05.280 --> 00:18:08.020
  • No, I was studying and the Lord gave me that statement,
  • 00:18:08.050 --> 00:18:10.200
  • and I think, Lord, that is good, and that's going to make
  • 00:18:10.230 --> 00:18:13.260
  • me look smart.
  • 00:18:13.290 --> 00:18:14.220
  • All right.
  • 00:18:14.250 --> 00:18:15.270
  • So, Jesus will either be for you a stumbling stone,
  • 00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:22.140
  • or a rock that you build your house on.
  • 00:18:22.170 --> 00:18:24.190
  • He's one or the other.
  • 00:18:24.220 --> 00:18:25.240
  • People either stumble over, or they build on Him.
  • 00:18:25.270 --> 00:18:29.080
  • So, hate precedes murder, anger precedes hate,
  • 00:18:29.110 --> 00:18:32.270
  • and offense precedes anger.
  • 00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:35.040
  • You get offended.
  • 00:18:35.070 --> 00:18:36.210
  • An unfulfilled expectation is what causes you to be offended.
  • 00:18:36.240 --> 00:18:40.140
  • Okay, but we've got to get to love now.
  • 00:18:40.170 --> 00:18:43.110
  • So, what precedes love?
  • 00:18:43.140 --> 00:18:46.010
  • Here's number five.
  • 00:18:46.040 --> 00:18:47.050
  • Forgiveness precedes love.
  • 00:18:47.080 --> 00:18:50.110
  • Forgiveness precedes love.
  • 00:18:50.140 --> 00:18:55.130
  • Matthew 5:43-44, Jesus said, "You've heard that it was said,
  • 00:18:55.160 --> 00:18:59.110
  • you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.
  • 00:18:59.140 --> 00:19:03.060
  • But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who
  • 00:19:03.090 --> 00:19:07.190
  • curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those
  • 00:19:07.220 --> 00:19:12.120
  • who spitefully use you and persecute you."
  • 00:19:12.150 --> 00:19:15.040
  • So, how in the world can you love someone that hates you,
  • 00:19:15.070 --> 00:19:20.180
  • or that is your enemy?
  • 00:19:20.210 --> 00:19:21.260
  • Simple. Forgiveness.
  • 00:19:21.290 --> 00:19:24.040
  • You have to forgive them, and I'll tell you
  • 00:19:24.070 --> 00:19:25.090
  • what the Greek word for forgive means in a moment.
  • 00:19:25.120 --> 00:19:27.180
  • But let me show you how hate leads to murder,
  • 00:19:27.210 --> 00:19:31.280
  • and how forgiveness leads to love.
  • 00:19:32.010 --> 00:19:34.020
  • Everyone follow that?
  • 00:19:34.050 --> 00:19:35.070
  • I'm about to wrap up the whole message with one story
  • 00:19:35.100 --> 00:19:37.140
  • from the Bible, how hate leads to murder,
  • 00:19:37.170 --> 00:19:40.000
  • but forgiveness leads to love -- Jacob and Esau.
  • 00:19:40.030 --> 00:19:44.230
  • Jacob steals the birthright and the blessing.
  • 00:19:44.260 --> 00:19:49.050
  • Genesis 27:41, "So Esau hated Jacob because
  • 00:19:49.080 --> 00:19:54.040
  • of the blessing with which his father blessed him,
  • 00:19:54.070 --> 00:19:57.160
  • and Esau said in his heart, "The days of mourning for my father
  • 00:19:57.190 --> 00:20:00.250
  • are at hand, then", in other words, when they're over,
  • 00:20:00.280 --> 00:20:03.190
  • "I will kill my brother, Jacob."
  • 00:20:03.220 --> 00:20:07.000
  • He hated him, so he was going to kill him.
  • 00:20:07.030 --> 00:20:08.280
  • Hate leads to murder. Okay?
  • 00:20:09.010 --> 00:20:11.000
  • Watch how forgiveness leads to love.
  • 00:20:11.030 --> 00:20:13.080
  • Years later, as a matter of fact, it's 20 years later.
  • 00:20:13.110 --> 00:20:15.160
  • Twenty years go by, twenty years.
  • 00:20:15.190 --> 00:20:19.050
  • Genesis 33:1, "Now Jacob lifted his eyes",
  • 00:20:19.080 --> 00:20:23.150
  • he's going back to the land where his father was.
  • 00:20:23.180 --> 00:20:25.120
  • "And there, Esau was coming, and with him
  • 00:20:25.150 --> 00:20:30.080
  • were four hundred men."
  • 00:20:30.110 --> 00:20:31.240
  • And when I say he was going back to the land where his
  • 00:20:31.270 --> 00:20:33.220
  • father was, his father had already passed away, okay?
  • 00:20:33.250 --> 00:20:35.060
  • All right.
  • 00:20:35.090 --> 00:20:36.150
  • "Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men."
  • 00:20:36.180 --> 00:20:40.270
  • Now what would you think if a guy that hated you
  • 00:20:41.000 --> 00:20:44.150
  • was coming to greet you with four hundred men?
  • 00:20:44.180 --> 00:20:51.160
  • But watch what happens, Verse 4.
  • 00:20:51.190 --> 00:20:54.060
  • "But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him,
  • 00:20:54.090 --> 00:20:58.100
  • and fell on his neck, and kissed him, and they wept."
  • 00:20:58.130 --> 00:21:06.120
  • How does Esau go from hating him and wanting to murder him,
  • 00:21:06.150 --> 00:21:10.240
  • to loving him, embracing him, and kissing him?
  • 00:21:10.270 --> 00:21:15.140
  • Because he'd forgiven him.
  • 00:21:15.170 --> 00:21:18.040
  • That's the only way.
  • 00:21:18.070 --> 00:21:20.030
  • And I almost did a point six, but I just have never done
  • 00:21:20.060 --> 00:21:22.130
  • a message with six points in my life, so let me just --
  • 00:21:22.160 --> 00:21:26.240
  • I have, but.
  • 00:21:26.270 --> 00:21:28.150
  • So, what precedes forgiveness, and that's grace.
  • 00:21:28.180 --> 00:21:33.040
  • So, if you just want to make a note.
  • 00:21:33.070 --> 00:21:34.130
  • In other words, how do you forgive?
  • 00:21:34.160 --> 00:21:37.050
  • Well, forgiveness is giving grace.
  • 00:21:37.080 --> 00:21:39.030
  • So how do you give grace?
  • 00:21:39.060 --> 00:21:40.100
  • You have to receive grace.
  • 00:21:40.130 --> 00:21:42.150
  • You can't give it if you haven't received it.
  • 00:21:42.180 --> 00:21:44.180
  • If you have a problem giving forgiveness,
  • 00:21:44.210 --> 00:21:46.290
  • you have a problem receiving forgiveness.
  • 00:21:47.020 --> 00:21:49.140
  • Let me say that again.
  • 00:21:49.170 --> 00:21:50.270
  • If you have a problem giving forgiveness,
  • 00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:52.270
  • you have a problem receiving forgiveness.
  • 00:21:53.000 --> 00:21:55.020
  • Here's Matthew 10:8.
  • 00:21:55.050 --> 00:21:56.100
  • "Freely you have received, freely give."
  • 00:21:56.130 --> 00:22:00.160
  • If you don't receive freely, then you don't give freely.
  • 00:22:00.190 --> 00:22:05.030
  • In other words, if you feel like you have to earn forgiveness
  • 00:22:05.060 --> 00:22:08.150
  • from God, you will make other people earn forgiveness
  • 00:22:08.180 --> 00:22:12.150
  • from you.
  • 00:22:12.180 --> 00:22:14.130
  • But once you catch grace and you understand,
  • 00:22:14.160 --> 00:22:17.110
  • I'm forgiven freely and I did not deserve to be forgiven,
  • 00:22:17.140 --> 00:22:21.160
  • then you'll forgive others who don't deserve to be forgiven.
  • 00:22:21.190 --> 00:22:24.050
  • Okay, what's the word forgive mean in the Greek?
  • 00:22:24.080 --> 00:22:27.090
  • One word, it means release.
  • 00:22:27.120 --> 00:22:31.080
  • That's what it means.
  • 00:22:31.110 --> 00:22:33.010
  • When God forgave you, He released you
  • 00:22:33.040 --> 00:22:36.110
  • from the punishment of the sin.
  • 00:22:36.140 --> 00:22:38.140
  • He released you.
  • 00:22:38.170 --> 00:22:39.170
  • He released you from judgment.
  • 00:22:39.200 --> 00:22:40.260
  • He released you.
  • 00:22:40.290 --> 00:22:42.110
  • So when you truly forgive someone,
  • 00:22:42.140 --> 00:22:44.200
  • it means you release them.
  • 00:22:44.230 --> 00:22:47.250
  • I was upset with someone one time, and I kept replaying
  • 00:22:47.280 --> 00:22:52.030
  • it in my mind.
  • 00:22:52.060 --> 00:22:53.200
  • Have you ever done that?
  • 00:22:53.230 --> 00:22:56.110
  • We've got a lot of 'em.
  • 00:22:56.140 --> 00:23:00.260
  • And it was about 2:00 in the morning,
  • 00:23:00.290 --> 00:23:03.150
  • have you ever done that?
  • 00:23:03.180 --> 00:23:04.210
  • About 2:00 in the morning, and I'm just replaying it,
  • 00:23:04.240 --> 00:23:06.000
  • over and over in my mind.
  • 00:23:06.030 --> 00:23:07.020
  • And all of the sudden, you know in your heart
  • 00:23:07.050 --> 00:23:08.090
  • how you hear the Lord?
  • 00:23:08.120 --> 00:23:09.170
  • Not audibly, but I felt like the Lord said, forgive him!
  • 00:23:09.200 --> 00:23:14.130
  • Like that.
  • 00:23:14.160 --> 00:23:15.210
  • It was almost like, I'm trying to sleep, pal, you know?
  • 00:23:15.240 --> 00:23:18.110
  • I felt like I was keeping Him up, you know?
  • 00:23:18.140 --> 00:23:19.250
  • He was just like, just forgive him!
  • 00:23:19.280 --> 00:23:21.190
  • It's 2:00 in the morning.
  • 00:23:21.220 --> 00:23:22.160
  • Forgive him!
  • 00:23:22.190 --> 00:23:23.220
  • Let's get some sleep.
  • 00:23:23.250 --> 00:23:27.230
  • And I said to the Lord, but Lord, he was wrong!
  • 00:23:27.260 --> 00:23:32.020
  • You know what the Lord said?
  • 00:23:32.050 --> 00:23:32.250
  • I'll never forget this.
  • 00:23:32.280 --> 00:23:33.200
  • He said, of course he was!
  • 00:23:33.230 --> 00:23:35.040
  • You don't forgive people who were right!
  • 00:23:35.070 --> 00:23:46.270
  • I baked you these cookies.
  • 00:23:47.000 --> 00:23:48.040
  • I forgive you!
  • 00:23:48.070 --> 00:23:51.030
  • But you don't forgive people who do good things to you.
  • 00:23:51.060 --> 00:23:54.020
  • You don't forgive people who are nice to you.
  • 00:23:54.050 --> 00:23:57.040
  • You forgive people who are mean and who hurt you,
  • 00:23:57.070 --> 00:24:00.280
  • and who offend you.
  • 00:24:01.010 --> 00:24:02.180
  • You forgive them.
  • 00:24:02.210 --> 00:24:04.240
  • You forgive them.
  • 00:24:04.270 --> 00:24:08.260
  • I'm really not concerned any of you are going to commit murder.
  • 00:24:08.290 --> 00:24:11.040
  • I hope not, I really do.
  • 00:24:11.070 --> 00:24:12.140
  • I don't think you are.
  • 00:24:12.170 --> 00:24:13.230
  • But I'm concerned you could fall in the trap,
  • 00:24:13.260 --> 00:24:17.070
  • you could get caught in a snare, and you could hate people,
  • 00:24:17.100 --> 00:24:21.240
  • and you could be angry with them, and you could be offended,
  • 00:24:21.270 --> 00:24:24.160
  • and you could not forgive them.
  • 00:24:24.190 --> 00:24:25.280
  • I'm enjoying this series so much, because I've never looked
  • 00:24:27.070 --> 00:24:30.050
  • at the Ten Commandments like this, that there's a principle
  • 00:24:30.080 --> 00:24:33.170
  • behind each commandment that helps our relationship
  • 00:24:33.200 --> 00:24:36.280
  • with God and our relationship with others.
  • 00:24:37.010 --> 00:24:40.000
  • And I think about the commandment we talked
  • 00:24:40.030 --> 00:24:41.210
  • about today, "You shall not murder",
  • 00:24:41.240 --> 00:24:43.150
  • but there's so much more that leads up to murdering someone,
  • 00:24:43.180 --> 00:24:47.060
  • maybe in our heart, that hate,
  • 00:24:47.090 --> 00:24:49.140
  • unfulfilled expectations, offenses.
  • 00:24:49.170 --> 00:24:52.250
  • So I want to encourage you, if the Holy Spirit put His
  • 00:24:52.280 --> 00:24:55.180
  • finger on something today, don't feel condemned about it.
  • 00:24:55.210 --> 00:24:58.180
  • Let the Holy Spirit convict you, and in that area,
  • 00:24:58.210 --> 00:25:02.020
  • let Him bring forgiveness and let Him bring healing.
  • 00:25:02.050 --> 00:25:06.170
  • Hey, thanks so much for watching.
  • 00:25:06.200 --> 00:25:08.050
  • Please watch next time, because I'm going to be continuing
  • 00:25:08.080 --> 00:25:11.040
  • this series, "Relationship Through God's Top Ten".
  • 00:25:11.070 --> 00:25:14.120
  • ANNOUNCER: When we think of the Ten Commandments,
  • 00:25:15.180 --> 00:25:16.250
  • many of us think of a list of rules telling us
