  • - Because God is a redeemer, there's always hope.
  • 00:00:01.090 --> 00:00:05.070
  • (upbeat music)
  • 00:00:05.070 --> 00:00:07.240
  • I'm Father Cedric Pisegna.
  • 00:00:32.080 --> 00:00:34.080
  • Welcome to "Live with Passion."
  • 00:00:34.080 --> 00:00:37.010
  • I am proclaiming to you a series about what really matters.
  • 00:00:37.010 --> 00:00:41.100
  • And today I wanna talk to you about hope.
  • 00:00:41.100 --> 00:00:44.110
  • Everybody needs hope.
  • 00:00:44.110 --> 00:00:45.240
  • I want you to be a person of hope.
  • 00:00:45.240 --> 00:00:47.280
  • If you're a person of hope, you can be a person of passion.
  • 00:00:47.280 --> 00:00:51.250
  • I'll share with you from Romans chapter 5.
  • 00:00:51.250 --> 00:00:55.040
  • It goes like this.
  • 00:00:55.040 --> 00:00:56.120
  • "Our sufferings produces endurance,
  • 00:00:57.170 --> 00:01:01.240
  • "and endurance produces character, character produces hope,
  • 00:01:01.240 --> 00:01:05.110
  • "and hope does not disappoint us
  • 00:01:06.080 --> 00:01:09.190
  • "because God's love has been poured into our hearts
  • 00:01:09.190 --> 00:01:11.290
  • "through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us."
  • 00:01:11.290 --> 00:01:14.220
  • That is so beautiful.
  • 00:01:14.220 --> 00:01:16.080
  • Hope does not disappoint us.
  • 00:01:16.080 --> 00:01:20.040
  • And we have a glorious hope
  • 00:01:20.040 --> 00:01:22.030
  • of eternal life with God in heaven, as we know.
  • 00:01:22.030 --> 00:01:25.100
  • That's our living hope.
  • 00:01:25.100 --> 00:01:27.050
  • That's what we're all looking for.
  • 00:01:27.050 --> 00:01:28.200
  • And that's usually when we think about hope
  • 00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:31.100
  • that's what we talk about.
  • 00:01:31.100 --> 00:01:33.000
  • That eternal life and living in heaven forever.
  • 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:37.040
  • But what about life on earth now?
  • 00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:39.240
  • What does it mean to have hope now?
  • 00:01:39.240 --> 00:01:41.120
  • It certainly means to believe
  • 00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:43.020
  • that one day life will be better.
  • 00:01:43.020 --> 00:01:46.100
  • But I've also discovered that hope has a nuanced meaning.
  • 00:01:46.100 --> 00:01:50.180
  • That hope is more than just what's gonna happen
  • 00:01:50.180 --> 00:01:54.000
  • in "The Sweet By-and-By," as glorious as that's gonna be.
  • 00:01:54.000 --> 00:01:57.270
  • Hope is when God is working in our lives,
  • 00:01:57.270 --> 00:02:02.240
  • bringing good out of the hard
  • 00:02:02.240 --> 00:02:05.230
  • and evil situations in our life.
  • 00:02:05.230 --> 00:02:08.100
  • I'll tell you a story.
  • 00:02:08.100 --> 00:02:09.170
  • It's about this farmer.
  • 00:02:09.170 --> 00:02:11.030
  • He had a horse, just one horse.
  • 00:02:11.030 --> 00:02:13.140
  • Plowing the land with the horse
  • 00:02:13.140 --> 00:02:15.040
  • and the harness on the horse broke.
  • 00:02:15.040 --> 00:02:18.040
  • The horse took off and jumped the fence.
  • 00:02:18.040 --> 00:02:21.140
  • He lost his horse, it was his only horse.
  • 00:02:21.140 --> 00:02:24.050
  • Neighbors came running over.
  • 00:02:24.050 --> 00:02:25.160
  • "Hey, we heard what happened, you lost your horse.
  • 00:02:25.160 --> 00:02:27.090
  • "That's really bad luck."
  • 00:02:27.090 --> 00:02:29.090
  • And the wise farmer said,
  • 00:02:29.090 --> 00:02:30.150
  • "Well, bad luck, good luck, who knows."
  • 00:02:30.150 --> 00:02:33.220
  • The next day, the horse came back
  • 00:02:33.220 --> 00:02:36.280
  • and it had a herd of wild horses with it.
  • 00:02:36.280 --> 00:02:40.140
  • And now the farmer's got all these horses.
  • 00:02:40.140 --> 00:02:43.180
  • And the neighbors heard what happened
  • 00:02:43.180 --> 00:02:45.030
  • and they came running over, "Hey, we heard what happened.
  • 00:02:45.030 --> 00:02:46.230
  • "Now you have all those horses, that's good luck."
  • 00:02:46.230 --> 00:02:49.060
  • And the wise farmer said,
  • 00:02:49.060 --> 00:02:50.120
  • "Well, good luck, bad luck, who knows."
  • 00:02:50.120 --> 00:02:53.270
  • Well, the next day, the farmer's son
  • 00:02:53.270 --> 00:02:57.160
  • was up on one of the wild horses
  • 00:02:57.160 --> 00:02:59.060
  • and he was trying to tame it.
  • 00:02:59.060 --> 00:03:00.290
  • They call it breaking the horse.
  • 00:03:00.290 --> 00:03:03.130
  • And while he was up there the horse bucked him off
  • 00:03:03.130 --> 00:03:05.180
  • and he fell and he broke his leg.
  • 00:03:05.180 --> 00:03:07.070
  • All the neighbors heard about it
  • 00:03:08.150 --> 00:03:10.000
  • and they come running over again and they said,
  • 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:11.070
  • "Hey, we heard what happened to your son.
  • 00:03:11.070 --> 00:03:12.100
  • "That's really bad luck."
  • 00:03:12.100 --> 00:03:14.120
  • And the wise farmer said,
  • 00:03:14.120 --> 00:03:15.180
  • "Well, bad luck, good luck, who knows."
  • 00:03:15.180 --> 00:03:18.190
  • The next day, the army came to town
  • 00:03:18.190 --> 00:03:20.240
  • and conscripted all the able-bodied young men
  • 00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:23.160
  • to go off to war.
  • 00:03:23.160 --> 00:03:25.130
  • And because the farmer's son had broken his leg,
  • 00:03:25.130 --> 00:03:27.230
  • they left him alone.
  • 00:03:27.230 --> 00:03:29.120
  • Now, was that good luck, bad luck?
  • 00:03:29.120 --> 00:03:32.200
  • Who knows.
  • 00:03:32.200 --> 00:03:34.030
  • The point of the story is this.
  • 00:03:34.030 --> 00:03:35.180
  • Sometimes things that look good may not be so good.
  • 00:03:35.180 --> 00:03:39.100
  • And there's my point.
  • 00:03:39.100 --> 00:03:40.290
  • Things that look bad can actually turn out to good.
  • 00:03:40.290 --> 00:03:44.190
  • Think for a moment about the crucifixion of Jesus.
  • 00:03:46.020 --> 00:03:50.000
  • We call that horrible event Good Friday. (laughs)
  • 00:03:51.110 --> 00:03:55.240
  • How in the world can we call
  • 00:03:55.240 --> 00:03:58.090
  • the execution of an innocent man something good?
  • 00:03:58.090 --> 00:04:03.110
  • Well, as you know, Jesus' passion,
  • 00:04:04.160 --> 00:04:08.120
  • his crucifixion has turned out to good for us.
  • 00:04:09.230 --> 00:04:13.060
  • We are now able to unite our sufferings with Christ,
  • 00:04:13.060 --> 00:04:17.130
  • to lay our burdens down at the foot of the cross,
  • 00:04:18.260 --> 00:04:22.080
  • to give him our sins,
  • 00:04:22.080 --> 00:04:24.280
  • and to receive forgiveness and eternal life.
  • 00:04:24.280 --> 00:04:27.140
  • So what started off to be a horrible bad Friday
  • 00:04:27.140 --> 00:04:31.170
  • turned out for us to be a good Friday,
  • 00:04:31.170 --> 00:04:34.230
  • because from Good Friday comes the Resurrection.
  • 00:04:34.230 --> 00:04:38.230
  • I go to many churches and some of the churches
  • 00:04:38.230 --> 00:04:42.210
  • will have a crucifix in the sanctuary.
  • 00:04:42.210 --> 00:04:45.070
  • Some of the churches, their crucifix will show
  • 00:04:46.150 --> 00:04:48.210
  • the risen Jesus on the cross.
  • 00:04:48.210 --> 00:04:52.120
  • Because the two go together.
  • 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:54.260
  • His death and his resurrection.
  • 00:04:54.260 --> 00:04:58.060
  • One time I was on the beach, about to ride my bike,
  • 00:04:58.060 --> 00:05:01.080
  • and this big rainstorm came so I looked for some shelter.
  • 00:05:01.080 --> 00:05:04.240
  • And right after that I couldn't wait
  • 00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:07.150
  • because the sun came out and I said
  • 00:05:07.150 --> 00:05:09.050
  • there's gotta be a rainbow coming.
  • 00:05:09.050 --> 00:05:11.140
  • And sure enough, right after the storm,
  • 00:05:11.140 --> 00:05:13.050
  • this beautiful rainbow.
  • 00:05:13.050 --> 00:05:15.180
  • See, that's hope.
  • 00:05:15.180 --> 00:05:17.060
  • And I really believe that there is this silver lining
  • 00:05:17.060 --> 00:05:19.280
  • in every cloud.
  • 00:05:19.280 --> 00:05:21.050
  • I'm not just trying to be optimistic,
  • 00:05:21.050 --> 00:05:23.000
  • I'm trying to imbue you with hope.
  • 00:05:24.030 --> 00:05:26.060
  • 'Cause I've discovered in my own life
  • 00:05:26.060 --> 00:05:28.250
  • that it's not over just because something's hard.
  • 00:05:28.250 --> 00:05:33.180
  • Actually, it's probably just beginning.
  • 00:05:33.180 --> 00:05:35.160
  • The way God is, he is able to, and God is able,
  • 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:41.170
  • he's able to take from any situation in your life
  • 00:05:41.170 --> 00:05:44.270
  • good things.
  • 00:05:44.270 --> 00:05:46.150
  • Let me try to explain that even more,
  • 00:05:46.150 --> 00:05:48.140
  • I've got many examples.
  • 00:05:48.140 --> 00:05:50.180
  • Just recently, two different people came up to me
  • 00:05:52.050 --> 00:05:56.030
  • and they said that they had been in a car accident.
  • 00:05:56.030 --> 00:05:58.200
  • They were okay.
  • 00:05:59.200 --> 00:06:00.220
  • But unbeknownst to them, because they went to the hospital
  • 00:06:02.030 --> 00:06:04.130
  • and they were examined,
  • 00:06:04.130 --> 00:06:06.040
  • both people, both different people, different times,
  • 00:06:06.040 --> 00:06:09.250
  • the doctors found the beginning of cancer in their body
  • 00:06:09.250 --> 00:06:14.120
  • because they had those examinations on the operating table.
  • 00:06:14.120 --> 00:06:18.190
  • Had it not been for the accident,
  • 00:06:19.240 --> 00:06:22.140
  • both of them could've died, could've died from cancer.
  • 00:06:23.270 --> 00:06:26.240
  • But because they caught the cancer early,
  • 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:29.100
  • both those people are now alive and well.
  • 00:06:29.100 --> 00:06:31.250
  • And when they got into that accident, they were thinking,
  • 00:06:31.250 --> 00:06:33.290
  • "This is horrible, this is bad."
  • 00:06:33.290 --> 00:06:35.120
  • But because of the accident, they found the cancer.
  • 00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:38.280
  • Wow.
  • 00:06:38.280 --> 00:06:40.140
  • Maybe something like that has happened in your life
  • 00:06:40.140 --> 00:06:42.070
  • and you know that just because things
  • 00:06:42.070 --> 00:06:45.120
  • aren't the way you would've had 'em
  • 00:06:45.120 --> 00:06:48.000
  • doesn't mean that God isn't working.
  • 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:50.270
  • God works through all this.
  • 00:06:52.010 --> 00:06:53.080
  • Does God give cancer?
  • 00:06:53.080 --> 00:06:54.100
  • No.
  • 00:06:54.100 --> 00:06:55.080
  • Does God give the accidents up?
  • 00:06:55.080 --> 00:06:56.200
  • No.
  • 00:06:56.200 --> 00:06:57.270
  • Does God work in it and through it?
  • 00:06:57.270 --> 00:06:59.210
  • Yes. (laughs)
  • 00:06:59.210 --> 00:07:02.000
  • He does that all the time.
  • 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:03.110
  • See, this is called redemption.
  • 00:07:04.100 --> 00:07:06.070
  • God is the redeemer of the slaves in Egypt.
  • 00:07:07.250 --> 00:07:10.190
  • God redeems the Hebrew slaves,
  • 00:07:11.150 --> 00:07:15.100
  • works through that horrible situation to bring them out.
  • 00:07:15.100 --> 00:07:18.130
  • God redeems us through the cross, through the passion,
  • 00:07:19.260 --> 00:07:22.260
  • through something as terrible as a man
  • 00:07:22.260 --> 00:07:25.180
  • being executed in a horrible way.
  • 00:07:25.180 --> 00:07:28.230
  • Then I heard the story about this man
  • 00:07:29.270 --> 00:07:31.220
  • who needed a heart transplant.
  • 00:07:31.220 --> 00:07:34.230
  • He was in his 50s and he needed a heart transplant.
  • 00:07:34.230 --> 00:07:38.030
  • Couldn't find a good donor.
  • 00:07:38.030 --> 00:07:39.210
  • Well, about that time,
  • 00:07:40.240 --> 00:07:42.120
  • he had a 22-year-old daughter named Patty,
  • 00:07:42.120 --> 00:07:45.190
  • unfortunately she got killed in a car accident.
  • 00:07:45.190 --> 00:07:48.110
  • Well, he was devastated by it,
  • 00:07:49.070 --> 00:07:51.030
  • but they found out that her heart
  • 00:07:51.030 --> 00:07:52.260
  • was a perfect match for his.
  • 00:07:52.260 --> 00:07:54.290
  • At first he didn't wanna take his own daughter's heart,
  • 00:07:56.110 --> 00:07:58.090
  • but then, as he and his wife talked about it,
  • 00:07:58.090 --> 00:08:01.150
  • they figured that she would've wanted to give him her heart.
  • 00:08:02.290 --> 00:08:07.080
  • And so they did the operation
  • 00:08:08.040 --> 00:08:10.170
  • and they put the heart of Patty into Chris.
  • 00:08:10.170 --> 00:08:15.150
  • And he lives to talk about it.
  • 00:08:17.010 --> 00:08:19.130
  • He says, "Whenever I feel my heart beating,
  • 00:08:20.250 --> 00:08:24.080
  • "I feel my daughter.
  • 00:08:25.110 --> 00:08:26.210
  • "And the one whom I gave life to
  • 00:08:27.240 --> 00:08:32.060
  • "has given life back to me."
  • 00:08:32.060 --> 00:08:34.040
  • The tragedy of an accident.
  • 00:08:34.040 --> 00:08:37.070
  • Yet God brought life out of that
  • 00:08:38.040 --> 00:08:41.010
  • and something good.
  • 00:08:41.270 --> 00:08:43.040
  • And not only to Chris, excuse me, to Chad.
  • 00:08:43.040 --> 00:08:46.290
  • Not only to Chad but she gave other organs to other people.
  • 00:08:46.290 --> 00:08:51.080
  • Two blind ladies now have vision because of Patty.
  • 00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:55.060
  • Two others are sharing her kidney.
  • 00:08:55.060 --> 00:08:57.290
  • And another has her liver.
  • 00:08:57.290 --> 00:09:00.180
  • All these people
  • 00:09:00.180 --> 00:09:01.240
  • benefiting from the tragedy of her accident.
  • 00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:05.040
  • And that's the way God works.
  • 00:09:06.010 --> 00:09:08.010
  • He takes the bad and the tragedies and the broken
  • 00:09:08.010 --> 00:09:11.230
  • and the sufferings and the difficulties
  • 00:09:11.230 --> 00:09:14.110
  • and he works through that to bring new life,
  • 00:09:14.110 --> 00:09:17.200
  • to bring blessing.
  • 00:09:17.200 --> 00:09:19.030
  • Out of the tragedy of the cross, he brought resurrection.
  • 00:09:19.030 --> 00:09:23.200
  • I live at Holy Name Retreat Center in Houston.
  • 00:09:25.010 --> 00:09:29.090
  • And at our retreat center,
  • 00:09:29.090 --> 00:09:30.210
  • it's a mecca for the 12-step program.
  • 00:09:30.210 --> 00:09:33.050
  • 12-step is Alcoholics Anonymous, Overeaters Anonymous,
  • 00:09:33.050 --> 00:09:36.140
  • all those anonymous programs.
  • 00:09:36.140 --> 00:09:38.260
  • And people come who have experienced
  • 00:09:38.260 --> 00:09:41.240
  • that they have an addiction.
  • 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:44.200
  • They've admitted it, that takes a lot of humility.
  • 00:09:44.200 --> 00:09:47.270
  • It's amazing how God works in their heart,
  • 00:09:47.270 --> 00:09:52.220
  • blackouts, bottoming out,
  • 00:09:52.220 --> 00:09:55.090
  • to bring them to sobriety and also to bring them new life.
  • 00:09:55.090 --> 00:10:00.080
  • Many of these people who are now in the 12-step program,
  • 00:10:01.230 --> 00:10:04.070
  • many of these people are now helping other people.
  • 00:10:04.070 --> 00:10:07.210
  • They actually become sponsors in the 12-step program.
  • 00:10:07.210 --> 00:10:11.030
  • And so what started off as something tragic
  • 00:10:11.030 --> 00:10:14.120
  • or bad or, quote, sinful, an addiction,
  • 00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:18.210
  • has turned into something good for the whole community
  • 00:10:18.210 --> 00:10:22.090
  • and good for the family.
  • 00:10:22.090 --> 00:10:24.120
  • People are turning their lives around.
  • 00:10:24.120 --> 00:10:26.020
  • This is redemption.
  • 00:10:26.020 --> 00:10:27.130
  • God's not mad at you because you're addicted.
  • 00:10:28.210 --> 00:10:32.020
  • But he'll use the addiction or the brokenness
  • 00:10:32.020 --> 00:10:35.220
  • or the mortal sin to bring you new life.
  • 00:10:35.220 --> 00:10:39.080
  • I have heard the confessions of many women and men
  • 00:10:39.080 --> 00:10:43.250
  • who have committed the sin of adultery,
  • 00:10:43.250 --> 00:10:48.020
  • committed the sin of abortion.
  • 00:10:48.020 --> 00:10:50.280
  • And most of them talk about how God used that situation
  • 00:10:50.280 --> 00:10:54.250
  • to actually bring them to a deeper relationship with Jesus.
  • 00:10:54.250 --> 00:10:58.290
  • So if you're in the midst of an addiction,
  • 00:10:58.290 --> 00:11:03.170
  • if you're in the midst of adultery,
  • 00:11:03.170 --> 00:11:06.100
  • God can free you from that
  • 00:11:06.100 --> 00:11:07.250
  • and you can actually become better because of it.
  • 00:11:09.070 --> 00:11:11.120
  • And God will also work in you in powerful ways.
  • 00:11:13.270 --> 00:11:17.060
  • If you've committed an abortion, don't give up on yourself.
  • 00:11:17.060 --> 00:11:20.070
  • I want you to know that there's healing for you.
  • 00:11:20.070 --> 00:11:23.010
  • I think about a woman friend of mine
  • 00:11:23.010 --> 00:11:26.020
  • who used to work in my ministry, Janice Carlton.
  • 00:11:26.020 --> 00:11:29.100
  • She preaches about this publicly.
  • 00:11:29.100 --> 00:11:31.250
  • She had an abortion when she was a teenager
  • 00:11:31.250 --> 00:11:34.260
  • and she was devastated by it.
  • 00:11:34.260 --> 00:11:37.040
  • But God worked in that situation to bring her new life.
  • 00:11:37.040 --> 00:11:41.020
  • She now has a family, four children.
  • 00:11:41.020 --> 00:11:43.120
  • And now she works with pro-life
  • 00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:46.060
  • and she pickets places where they have abortions
  • 00:11:46.060 --> 00:11:50.180
  • and God's working through her to bring new life.
  • 00:11:50.180 --> 00:11:53.160
  • In fact, her daughter became a Sister of Life
  • 00:11:53.160 --> 00:11:56.210
  • dedicated to pro-life.
  • 00:11:56.210 --> 00:11:58.280
  • So God has a way of making the tragedies and the hurts
  • 00:11:58.280 --> 00:12:03.290
  • and the sorrows and the brokenness of our life.
  • 00:12:05.060 --> 00:12:07.060
  • See, this is what hope is.
  • 00:12:07.060 --> 00:12:09.150
  • At the Easter Vigil, the great celebration of hope, Easter,
  • 00:12:09.150 --> 00:12:14.120
  • the Resurrection,
  • 00:12:15.120 --> 00:12:16.260
  • at the Easter Vigil, either the deacon or somebody qualified
  • 00:12:16.260 --> 00:12:21.050
  • will sing something called "The Exsultet."
  • 00:12:21.050 --> 00:12:25.020
  • And "The Exsultet" is this great liturgical ancient hymn.
  • 00:12:25.020 --> 00:12:29.200
  • And in this hymn, they'll talk about,
  • 00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:32.260
  • "Oh happy fault
  • 00:12:32.260 --> 00:12:34.140
  • "that earned such a glorious redeemer."
  • 00:12:35.200 --> 00:12:39.070
  • So in the midst of Easter,
  • 00:12:39.070 --> 00:12:43.030
  • we go back to original sin and we call it a happy fault.
  • 00:12:43.030 --> 00:12:47.070
  • See, God is even able to turn original sin inside out
  • 00:12:47.070 --> 00:12:52.070
  • and to make it a happy fault.
  • 00:12:53.030 --> 00:12:55.150
  • Because it leads to redemption and resurrection.
  • 00:12:55.150 --> 00:12:59.190
  • This is the power of God, folks.
  • 00:12:59.190 --> 00:13:02.150
  • You see, the God that we serve created the universe,
  • 00:13:02.150 --> 00:13:06.070
  • trillions of galaxies, billions of people.
  • 00:13:06.070 --> 00:13:10.110
  • If you are in love with nature, like I am,
  • 00:13:11.140 --> 00:13:14.200
  • birds and animals and mountains and valleys and the oceans.
  • 00:13:14.200 --> 00:13:19.200
  • We've all seen it.
  • 00:13:20.150 --> 00:13:21.190
  • The sun, the stars.
  • 00:13:21.190 --> 00:13:23.100
  • But his greatest power, I believe,
  • 00:13:24.150 --> 00:13:27.120
  • is his power to forgive
  • 00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:29.160
  • and to redeem.
  • 00:13:30.260 --> 00:13:32.030
  • It says in the scriptures that his arm is not so short
  • 00:13:33.160 --> 00:13:37.020
  • that he can't redeem us.
  • 00:13:37.020 --> 00:13:40.130
  • God is able to work in your situation,
  • 00:13:40.130 --> 00:13:45.130
  • whatever hardship or difficulty or tragedy
  • 00:13:46.180 --> 00:13:48.070
  • you may be going through.
  • 00:13:48.070 --> 00:13:50.020
  • I've led pilgrimages to the Holy Land
  • 00:13:50.020 --> 00:13:52.010
  • and I've studied there, way back in 1988.
  • 00:13:52.010 --> 00:13:56.080
  • I love going there.
  • 00:13:56.080 --> 00:13:58.030
  • And Galilee is so beautiful.
  • 00:13:58.030 --> 00:13:59.210
  • And one of the places I always lead pilgrims to
  • 00:13:59.210 --> 00:14:03.050
  • is Jerusalem.
  • 00:14:03.050 --> 00:14:05.010
  • And in Jerusalem they have a church there,
  • 00:14:05.010 --> 00:14:06.270
  • it's called the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
  • 00:14:06.270 --> 00:14:09.230
  • Sepulchre was the tomb of Jesus.
  • 00:14:09.230 --> 00:14:13.070
  • It's the Church of the Holy Sepulchre
  • 00:14:13.070 --> 00:14:15.000
  • because it's the invariants of the church
  • 00:14:15.000 --> 00:14:19.060
  • surround the tomb where Jesus was,
  • 00:14:19.060 --> 00:14:22.110
  • but also it surrounds Cavalry, where Jesus was crucified.
  • 00:14:22.110 --> 00:14:27.010
  • So in other words, in one church you have two things.
  • 00:14:27.010 --> 00:14:31.110
  • You have the place of the death of Christ in Calvary,
  • 00:14:31.110 --> 00:14:34.240
  • and right near it is the empty tomb.
  • 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:38.170
  • And it's a powerful church because it contains
  • 00:14:38.170 --> 00:14:41.140
  • not only the place where Jesus was put to death
  • 00:14:41.140 --> 00:14:44.000
  • but this empty tomb which to us
  • 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:46.280
  • is the sign of the Resurrection.
  • 00:14:46.280 --> 00:14:49.070
  • And that's hope.
  • 00:14:49.070 --> 00:14:50.070
  • And that's the way it is in our lives.
  • 00:14:51.120 --> 00:14:53.170
  • Oftentimes, it's the situation
  • 00:14:53.170 --> 00:14:56.000
  • that causes the pain and the sorrow, Calvary,
  • 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:59.240
  • that leads to the place of blessing
  • 00:14:59.240 --> 00:15:04.230
  • and new life and resurrection.
  • 00:15:04.230 --> 00:15:07.280
  • And I think about emptiness
  • 00:15:07.280 --> 00:15:09.070
  • because many people are going through emptiness
  • 00:15:09.070 --> 00:15:11.070
  • in their life right now.
  • 00:15:11.070 --> 00:15:13.050
  • And if you are going through an empty period,
  • 00:15:13.050 --> 00:15:16.110
  • feeling like nothing's happening,
  • 00:15:16.110 --> 00:15:17.280
  • I want you to know that that could be the catalyst
  • 00:15:17.280 --> 00:15:20.280
  • for something more.
  • 00:15:20.280 --> 00:15:22.180
  • Just like the empty tomb was the catalyst,
  • 00:15:22.180 --> 00:15:25.040
  • or the sign, the symbol of the Resurrection.
  • 00:15:25.040 --> 00:15:28.110
  • I think about my own life really quickly.
  • 00:15:29.170 --> 00:15:30.290
  • I remember when I was dating in college.
  • 00:15:30.290 --> 00:15:33.030
  • I dated this woman for about nine months
  • 00:15:34.070 --> 00:15:36.010
  • and we had a great time together.
  • 00:15:36.010 --> 00:15:38.060
  • We ended up breaking up and that's when I felt
  • 00:15:38.060 --> 00:15:40.030
  • a lot of hurt deep inside.
  • 00:15:40.030 --> 00:15:42.150
  • And there was some tremendous emptiness
  • 00:15:42.150 --> 00:15:44.250
  • because really I had abandoned God
  • 00:15:44.250 --> 00:15:47.110
  • and needed forgiveness in my life
  • 00:15:47.110 --> 00:15:49.230
  • and I was going through a,
  • 00:15:49.230 --> 00:15:51.100
  • Billy Graham calls it a cosmic loneliness.
  • 00:15:51.100 --> 00:15:54.240
  • This loneliness deep inside that's emptiness.
  • 00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:58.250
  • But it was that emptiness and that hurt
  • 00:15:58.250 --> 00:16:02.170
  • and that pain and that loneliness inside
  • 00:16:02.170 --> 00:16:04.270
  • that actually led me to God.
  • 00:16:04.270 --> 00:16:06.210
  • It was the catalyst of my conversion.
  • 00:16:06.210 --> 00:16:09.260
  • That's why I say don't just look on the surface of things,
  • 00:16:09.260 --> 00:16:12.130
  • don't just say, well, I'm empty and I'm lonely
  • 00:16:12.130 --> 00:16:14.280
  • and that's it, it's over, and (mumbles), no.
  • 00:16:14.280 --> 00:16:18.060
  • Look for the one who can redeem you.
  • 00:16:18.060 --> 00:16:20.080
  • Remember what I said, God is our redeemer.
  • 00:16:20.080 --> 00:16:22.050
  • Goel is the word for this in I believe the Hebrew.
  • 00:16:22.050 --> 00:16:26.030
  • God our redeemer.
  • 00:16:26.030 --> 00:16:27.120
  • Look for God to redeem your situation.
  • 00:16:28.150 --> 00:16:30.160
  • Whether it be grieving, depression, loneliness,
  • 00:16:30.160 --> 00:16:35.010
  • emptiness, confusion about the future.
  • 00:16:36.180 --> 00:16:40.120
  • Just give God a little bit of faith,
  • 00:16:41.160 --> 00:16:44.000
  • give God a little bit of room to work with,
  • 00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:47.120
  • and I know that he will work in your situation.
  • 00:16:47.120 --> 00:16:50.260
  • This is what hope is.
  • 00:16:50.260 --> 00:16:52.280
  • I used to have a good friend named Brent.
  • 00:16:52.280 --> 00:16:56.000
  • Brent and I were golf buddies
  • 00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:58.160
  • and he was such a gracious man, a great believer.
  • 00:16:58.160 --> 00:17:03.060
  • Unfortunately, he contracted lymphoma of the lung.
  • 00:17:03.060 --> 00:17:08.060
  • Hodgkin's lymphoma it was called.
  • 00:17:09.120 --> 00:17:12.030
  • And he ended up passing away.
  • 00:17:12.030 --> 00:17:14.150
  • He was only about 61 years old, he wasn't that old.
  • 00:17:14.150 --> 00:17:18.020
  • Passed away from this cancer.
  • 00:17:18.020 --> 00:17:20.160
  • And his wife and his children were devastated
  • 00:17:20.160 --> 00:17:23.000
  • because Brent was such a great man.
  • 00:17:23.000 --> 00:17:25.150
  • But the aftermath of this has led his wife
  • 00:17:25.150 --> 00:17:29.170
  • to become the leader of a grief group
  • 00:17:29.170 --> 00:17:33.040
  • and now she's helping a lot of people that are grieving.
  • 00:17:34.180 --> 00:17:37.060
  • I get emails from people that are grieving all the time.
  • 00:17:39.050 --> 00:17:43.060
  • She wrote something for me
  • 00:17:43.060 --> 00:17:44.190
  • so that I can send to people in an email.
  • 00:17:44.190 --> 00:17:47.190
  • So what I'm trying to say is that
  • 00:17:47.190 --> 00:17:49.090
  • his wife Judy took the tragedy of Brent dying
  • 00:17:50.180 --> 00:17:54.230
  • and did something with it.
  • 00:17:54.230 --> 00:17:56.130
  • And that's what hope is.
  • 00:17:56.130 --> 00:17:58.130
  • And then I think about this 13-year-old girl.
  • 00:17:58.130 --> 00:18:01.260
  • Her name was Cari Lightner.
  • 00:18:01.260 --> 00:18:03.290
  • She ended up being killed by a drunk driver.
  • 00:18:03.290 --> 00:18:06.170
  • This was years ago.
  • 00:18:06.170 --> 00:18:08.150
  • Her mother Candice was overwhelmed.
  • 00:18:08.150 --> 00:18:12.120
  • She was shattered.
  • 00:18:12.120 --> 00:18:13.280
  • She was broken by this.
  • 00:18:13.280 --> 00:18:15.130
  • Her 13-year-old girl was killed by a drunk driver,
  • 00:18:15.130 --> 00:18:19.240
  • such a senseless happening.
  • 00:18:19.240 --> 00:18:22.040
  • Her anger and her grief were overwhelming.
  • 00:18:22.040 --> 00:18:24.190
  • Instead of letting these emotions totally dominate her
  • 00:18:26.120 --> 00:18:30.040
  • and that was the end of the story,
  • 00:18:30.040 --> 00:18:32.120
  • Candice decided to do something about this.
  • 00:18:32.120 --> 00:18:35.190
  • And in time, she raised up a movement called MADD,
  • 00:18:35.190 --> 00:18:40.190
  • Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.
  • 00:18:41.150 --> 00:18:43.180
  • And her goal was that there would be
  • 00:18:43.180 --> 00:18:46.280
  • no more drunk driving deaths.
  • 00:18:46.280 --> 00:18:50.140
  • And so MADD is all about ending drunk driving,
  • 00:18:50.140 --> 00:18:54.140
  • that's her mission.
  • 00:18:54.140 --> 00:18:56.020
  • Well, they haven't totally stopped
  • 00:18:56.020 --> 00:18:58.150
  • people getting killed by drunk drivers,
  • 00:18:59.190 --> 00:19:01.130
  • but it's been cut in half.
  • 00:19:01.130 --> 00:19:03.220
  • So out of the tragedy of this little girl's death,
  • 00:19:03.220 --> 00:19:07.110
  • this mother did something, and this is what hope is,
  • 00:19:07.110 --> 00:19:11.140
  • out of the tragedy, out of something bad,
  • 00:19:11.140 --> 00:19:13.140
  • something good happened.
  • 00:19:13.140 --> 00:19:14.210
  • Think of the lives, the thousands of lives
  • 00:19:14.210 --> 00:19:18.180
  • that have been saved because of Cari's death.
  • 00:19:18.180 --> 00:19:22.270
  • Wow.
  • 00:19:23.270 --> 00:19:25.030
  • That's what hope is.
  • 00:19:25.030 --> 00:19:27.020
  • And so I want you to understand that there's hope for you,
  • 00:19:27.020 --> 00:19:31.170
  • no matter what you're going through.
  • 00:19:31.170 --> 00:19:34.000
  • I think of the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi.
  • 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:37.100
  • This has been attributed to him and it goes like this.
  • 00:19:37.100 --> 00:19:40.170
  • "Make me a channel of your peace.
  • 00:19:40.170 --> 00:19:43.160
  • "Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope.
  • 00:19:43.160 --> 00:19:46.190
  • "Where there's darkness, only light.
  • 00:19:47.220 --> 00:19:50.190
  • "And where there's sadness, ever joy."
  • 00:19:50.190 --> 00:19:53.100
  • Wow, that is so good.
  • 00:19:53.100 --> 00:19:55.210
  • So really when it comes to tragedy
  • 00:19:55.210 --> 00:20:00.020
  • and hardship and divorce and darkness,
  • 00:20:00.020 --> 00:20:05.010
  • there's hope.
  • 00:20:05.200 --> 00:20:06.060
  • I have a pen pal ministry
  • 00:20:07.120 --> 00:20:09.160
  • and it reaches out to people who are in prison.
  • 00:20:09.160 --> 00:20:12.150
  • And one of the people in prison wrote me
  • 00:20:12.150 --> 00:20:16.140
  • and this is what they said, they said,
  • 00:20:16.140 --> 00:20:18.110
  • "Through the darkness of prison
  • 00:20:19.120 --> 00:20:21.140
  • "I have found God in my life."
  • 00:20:21.140 --> 00:20:23.260
  • He said, "I enrolled in a Bible study class that they had
  • 00:20:23.260 --> 00:20:27.000
  • "just to kill the time.
  • 00:20:27.000 --> 00:20:29.110
  • "But as I was studying the scriptures,
  • 00:20:29.110 --> 00:20:31.200
  • "as I was studying the Bible in prison,
  • 00:20:31.200 --> 00:20:34.170
  • "God touched me and gave me a call."
  • 00:20:34.170 --> 00:20:38.260
  • And he said, "I found a calling in my life.
  • 00:20:38.260 --> 00:20:41.000
  • "I'm now a different man than I ever was."
  • 00:20:41.000 --> 00:20:43.190
  • And it all happened in the darkness of prison.
  • 00:20:43.190 --> 00:20:47.100
  • His call is to share with others,
  • 00:20:47.100 --> 00:20:49.000
  • of course, as you might expect,
  • 00:20:49.000 --> 00:20:50.150
  • to share with others about the good news of Jesus.
  • 00:20:50.150 --> 00:20:53.070
  • But he didn't even know Jesus when he went into prison.
  • 00:20:53.070 --> 00:20:56.040
  • Now he's had this beautiful conversion.
  • 00:20:56.040 --> 00:20:58.030
  • But the point I'm trying to make is
  • 00:20:58.030 --> 00:20:59.250
  • in the darkness of prison, the hardship, the loneliness,
  • 00:20:59.250 --> 00:21:04.080
  • the emptiness, if you will, of that hard situation,
  • 00:21:04.080 --> 00:21:07.080
  • this man found God.
  • 00:21:07.080 --> 00:21:09.130
  • And so that's how God works, it's beautiful,
  • 00:21:09.130 --> 00:21:11.250
  • in all kinds of difficult situations.
  • 00:21:11.250 --> 00:21:14.210
  • I think about this movie that just came out
  • 00:21:14.210 --> 00:21:17.130
  • as I'm taping this, as I'm filming this.
  • 00:21:17.130 --> 00:21:20.150
  • In 2019 there was a movie called "Unplanned."
  • 00:21:20.150 --> 00:21:23.260
  • And if you know anything about it,
  • 00:21:23.260 --> 00:21:25.060
  • it was an unplanned box office success.
  • 00:21:25.060 --> 00:21:29.160
  • It's the story about Abby Johnson
  • 00:21:29.160 --> 00:21:31.020
  • who was the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic
  • 00:21:31.020 --> 00:21:33.150
  • in Bryan, Texas.
  • 00:21:33.150 --> 00:21:35.050
  • And during her tenure,
  • 00:21:35.050 --> 00:21:37.180
  • she saw an ultrasound for a 13-week-old fetus.
  • 00:21:37.180 --> 00:21:42.030
  • And during this ultrasound, the doctor sent in a probe
  • 00:21:42.030 --> 00:21:44.290
  • and the fetus tried to get out of the way.
  • 00:21:44.290 --> 00:21:47.130
  • And it so upset her
  • 00:21:47.130 --> 00:21:49.120
  • that she ended up leaving Planned Parenthood,
  • 00:21:49.120 --> 00:21:52.010
  • changing her whole views on abortion,
  • 00:21:52.010 --> 00:21:55.270
  • and becoming a person that is pro-life.
  • 00:21:55.270 --> 00:21:59.000
  • Well, this movie came out,
  • 00:21:59.000 --> 00:22:00.190
  • and now it has affected our culture.
  • 00:22:00.190 --> 00:22:03.110
  • Many people went to see that movie.
  • 00:22:03.110 --> 00:22:06.020
  • And our culture is changing.
  • 00:22:06.020 --> 00:22:08.150
  • President Trump got into office, very pro-life president,
  • 00:22:08.150 --> 00:22:11.290
  • and he's been helping to change legislation.
  • 00:22:11.290 --> 00:22:15.030
  • Now there are states such as Missouri,
  • 00:22:15.030 --> 00:22:18.090
  • Iowa, Kentucky, Utah, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia,
  • 00:22:18.090 --> 00:22:22.120
  • and so many other states.
  • 00:22:22.120 --> 00:22:23.290
  • In some of the states it is now illegal
  • 00:22:23.290 --> 00:22:26.170
  • to have abortions in that state.
  • 00:22:26.170 --> 00:22:29.180
  • I never thought I would live to see the day
  • 00:22:29.180 --> 00:22:32.120
  • when abortion would be illegal.
  • 00:22:32.120 --> 00:22:34.200
  • But the tide has been turning.
  • 00:22:34.200 --> 00:22:36.120
  • And so what I simply wanted to say
  • 00:22:37.150 --> 00:22:39.120
  • is that God works through the tragedies of abortion
  • 00:22:39.120 --> 00:22:43.020
  • to bring new life.
  • 00:22:43.020 --> 00:22:44.160
  • If you're a woman, or a man, considering having an abortion,
  • 00:22:44.160 --> 00:22:48.280
  • I'm inviting you to open up your heart to God
  • 00:22:50.020 --> 00:22:54.120
  • and to realize that that life
  • 00:22:54.120 --> 00:22:55.260
  • that has begun in your womb, if you're a woman,
  • 00:22:55.260 --> 00:22:59.270
  • is really a human being,
  • 00:22:59.270 --> 00:23:01.140
  • and to give that life a chance.
  • 00:23:02.100 --> 00:23:05.080
  • And I wanna tell you that this is how God works.
  • 00:23:05.080 --> 00:23:07.150
  • If you've had an abortion and you're broken
  • 00:23:07.150 --> 00:23:10.060
  • and feeling guilty and overwhelmed,
  • 00:23:10.060 --> 00:23:11.230
  • realize that you're not beyond the pail of forgiveness,
  • 00:23:11.230 --> 00:23:15.270
  • that God, his mercy, his love will forgive you.
  • 00:23:15.270 --> 00:23:20.160
  • Simply come to him.
  • 00:23:20.160 --> 00:23:22.150
  • So that's what hope is.
  • 00:23:22.150 --> 00:23:24.100
  • Hope is believing in the tragedies,
  • 00:23:24.100 --> 00:23:28.130
  • in the sufferings, in the accidents,
  • 00:23:28.130 --> 00:23:33.020
  • in the sins, (laughs) in the addictions.
  • 00:23:33.020 --> 00:23:36.240
  • And I've listed many here in this talk.
  • 00:23:36.240 --> 00:23:39.280
  • And all the stuff of what it is to be human.
  • 00:23:39.280 --> 00:23:43.060
  • That God isn't distant, but rather, God is at work.
  • 00:23:43.060 --> 00:23:48.010
  • And that's why hope is alive.
  • 00:23:48.010 --> 00:23:50.100
  • And if you're a person of hope,
  • 00:23:50.100 --> 00:23:52.160
  • you'll become a passionate person.
  • 00:23:52.160 --> 00:23:54.210
  • A proactive person.
  • 00:23:54.210 --> 00:23:56.200
  • A person who reaches out to others
  • 00:23:56.200 --> 00:23:58.150
  • because you know that God is a redeeming God.
  • 00:23:58.150 --> 00:24:02.060
  • And I pray that in your life,
  • 00:24:02.060 --> 00:24:03.160
  • no matter what you're going through right now,
  • 00:24:03.160 --> 00:24:06.020
  • you'll be a person of hope
  • 00:24:06.020 --> 00:24:08.160
  • that knows that even though there's a storm on the horizon,
  • 00:24:08.160 --> 00:24:11.290
  • the rainbow is coming.
  • 00:24:11.290 --> 00:24:14.030
  • And because of you're hope, you won't just live.
  • 00:24:14.030 --> 00:24:17.130
  • You'll live with passion.
  • 00:24:17.130 --> 00:24:19.000
  • (gentle music)
  • 00:24:19.000 --> 00:24:21.200
  • I hope my sharing with you brought you hope.
  • 00:24:21.200 --> 00:24:24.020
  • We have a living hope.
  • 00:24:24.020 --> 00:24:26.050
  • Because God is our redeemer,
  • 00:24:26.050 --> 00:24:28.000
  • any situation can be turned around.
  • 00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:30.130
  • I received this email from a woman.
  • 00:24:30.130 --> 00:24:31.270
  • She said, "I was feeling depressed and isolated.
  • 00:24:31.270 --> 00:24:34.140
  • "Instead of sitting back, I took your advice, Father Cedric,
  • 00:24:34.140 --> 00:24:37.120
  • "and I formed a ladies group.
  • 00:24:37.120 --> 00:24:38.210
  • "Now we have over 65 women in this group."
  • 00:24:38.210 --> 00:24:41.240
  • And she said, "I want you to know how profound
  • 00:24:41.240 --> 00:24:44.030
  • "your words have impacted my life
  • 00:24:44.030 --> 00:24:46.230
  • "and helped me to overcome
  • 00:24:46.230 --> 00:24:48.020
  • "what was a very dark period of my life."
  • 00:24:48.020 --> 00:24:50.060
  • She said, "I feel better about myself
  • 00:24:50.060 --> 00:24:51.220
  • "and now these women feel better about themselves."
  • 00:24:51.220 --> 00:24:54.010
  • See, that's hope.
  • 00:24:54.010 --> 00:24:54.260
  • You don't just sit back
  • 00:24:54.260 --> 00:24:56.010
  • and let the hard things overwhelm you.
  • 00:24:56.010 --> 00:24:57.250
  • You get involved, you become proactive.
  • 00:24:57.250 --> 00:25:00.110
  • God is our redeemer.
  • 00:25:00.110 --> 00:25:01.260
  • He works in you and through you to touch other people.
  • 00:25:01.260 --> 00:25:04.140
  • This is one of my messages.
  • 00:25:04.140 --> 00:25:06.240
  • Most of all, I'm trying to get people
  • 00:25:06.240 --> 00:25:08.060
  • to come into a close personal relationship
  • 00:25:08.060 --> 00:25:11.110
  • with Jesus Christ.
  • 00:25:11.110 --> 00:25:12.250
  • I'm now on many networks, radio, social media, the Internet.
  • 00:25:12.250 --> 00:25:17.230
  • Everywhere I can to bring people
  • 00:25:17.230 --> 00:25:19.290
  • to a saving knowledge of Jesus.
  • 00:25:19.290 --> 00:25:22.040
  • To bring people to a living hope.
  • 00:25:22.040 --> 00:25:24.250
  • Would you consider supporting my ministry
  • 00:25:24.250 --> 00:25:26.240
  • and hopefully becoming a partner with me?
  • 00:25:26.240 --> 00:25:30.030
  • I have a number of people who are,
  • 00:25:30.030 --> 00:25:31.210
  • but some of you've been watching my program for a long time
  • 00:25:31.210 --> 00:25:34.020
  • and you've thought about it.
  • 00:25:34.020 --> 00:25:35.140
  • Well, make a move, become a partner.
  • 00:25:35.140 --> 00:25:37.200
  • I guarantee all your money will go
  • 00:25:37.200 --> 00:25:39.130
  • to the production and the airing of these programs.
  • 00:25:39.130 --> 00:25:42.240
  • So all you gotta do is call that number,
  • 00:25:42.240 --> 00:25:45.110
  • write me at that address,
  • 00:25:45.110 --> 00:25:47.100
  • go to my Internet, to my website.
  • 00:25:47.100 --> 00:25:49.280
  • And I wanna tell you thank you, thank you, thank you
  • 00:25:49.280 --> 00:25:53.170
  • for helping me proclaim hope in the world
  • 00:25:53.170 --> 00:25:56.120
  • and a personal relationship with Jesus.
  • 00:25:56.120 --> 00:25:58.200
  • Don't just live, live with passion.
  • 00:25:58.200 --> 00:26:01.010
  • (gentle music)
  • 00:26:03.080 --> 00:26:05.250
  • - [Announcer] God is good all the time.
  • 00:26:10.260 --> 00:26:13.030
  • All the time, God is good.
  • 00:26:13.030 --> 00:26:15.080
  • For over 13 years, Father Cedric has broadcasted
  • 00:26:15.080 --> 00:26:18.210
  • "Live with Passion" on television and radio.
  • 00:26:18.210 --> 00:26:22.010
  • Father is inspiring believers
  • 00:26:22.010 --> 00:26:24.030
  • and reaching out to those who have not yet come to faith.
  • 00:26:24.030 --> 00:26:27.130
  • Because of these programs,
  • 00:26:27.130 --> 00:26:29.000
  • lives are being touched and souls are being saved.
  • 00:26:29.000 --> 00:26:32.190
  • Please join us in supporting Father Cedric
  • 00:26:32.190 --> 00:26:34.270
  • in his God-given mission to proclaim the gospel
  • 00:26:34.270 --> 00:26:37.220
  • to every person.
  • 00:26:37.220 --> 00:26:39.080
  • Father Cedric is a priest with a professed vow of poverty.

  • will be used to help him and his ministry.

  • Many are hurting, broken and lost,
  • 00:26:47.090 --> 00:26:50.080
  • but God is good all the time.
  • 00:26:50.080 --> 00:26:52.150
  • Through grace people can be saved.
