  • 00:01:42.040 --> 00:01:45.110
  • Amen!
  • 00:01:45.120 --> 00:01:53.060
  • Bobby Schuller: This is the day the Lord has made.
  • 00:01:54.120 --> 00:01:56.000
  • We will rejoice and be glad in it.
  • 00:01:56.010 --> 00:01:59.150
  • Good morning.
  • 00:01:59.160 --> 00:02:01.140
  • Hannah Schuller: And welcome, church family and visitors.
  • 00:02:01.150 --> 00:02:03.190
  • We are so happy to have you here.
  • 00:02:03.200 --> 00:02:06.030
  • Today, I felt I was supposed to tell you
  • 00:02:06.040 --> 00:02:09.000
  • that God is with you right now.
  • 00:02:09.010 --> 00:02:12.080
  • If you have asked him to come into your life, he is with you
  • 00:02:12.090 --> 00:02:16.000
  • whether you feel it or not, and my favorite writer in the Bible
  • 00:02:16.010 --> 00:02:20.040
  • is David 'cause he's so honest in the way he writes,
  • 00:02:20.050 --> 00:02:22.280
  • and he says things like, "God, where are you?
  • 00:02:22.290 --> 00:02:25.250
  • Why have you abandoned me?
  • 00:02:25.260 --> 00:02:27.120
  • I can count every rib in my body.
  • 00:02:27.130 --> 00:02:29.050
  • I'm dying. Where are you?"
  • 00:02:29.060 --> 00:02:31.230
  • But you see, as you continue to read the Psalms, that God is
  • 00:02:31.240 --> 00:02:35.280
  • faithful in the end to David, and you see that God was with
  • 00:02:35.290 --> 00:02:38.250
  • David even when he felt like he was abandoned.
  • 00:02:38.260 --> 00:02:42.010
  • God is with you right now and on a long enough timeline
  • 00:02:42.020 --> 00:02:45.200
  • you will see his faithfulness in your life.
  • 00:02:45.210 --> 00:02:48.070
  • Bobby: It's absolutely true, and it's a good reminder.
  • 00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:50.030
  • Let's begin with a word of prayer.
  • 00:02:50.040 --> 00:02:51.130
  • Father, we thank you so much that you've called us here,
  • 00:02:51.140 --> 00:02:54.000
  • and Lord, we love you.
  • 00:02:54.010 --> 00:02:55.200
  • We thank you that your Holy Spirit is in this place.
  • 00:02:55.210 --> 00:02:58.050
  • Thank you, Father, that just as we are we can come before your
  • 00:02:58.060 --> 00:03:00.230
  • feet and worship you and lift up your name.
  • 00:03:00.240 --> 00:03:03.100
  • Pray for everybody under the sound of my voice that's hurting
  • 00:03:03.110 --> 00:03:05.230
  • or that's looking for an answer or looking for a way through
  • 00:03:05.240 --> 00:03:08.030
  • or looking to be inspired or just looking for some rest.
  • 00:03:08.040 --> 00:03:11.120
  • Father, we pray that you would bring us to those places,
  • 00:03:11.130 --> 00:03:14.070
  • that you would usher us into victory, into your kingdom.
  • 00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:17.020
  • Lord, we love you, and we thank you so much.
  • 00:03:17.030 --> 00:03:18.260
  • It's in Jesus's name we pray, amen.
  • 00:03:18.270 --> 00:03:20.220
  • Hannah: Amen.
  • 00:03:20.230 --> 00:03:22.060
  • Turn around and shake the hand of the person next to you
  • 00:03:22.070 --> 00:03:24.000
  • and say, "God loves you and so do I."
  • 00:03:24.010 --> 00:03:27.020
  • Bobby: We all go through circumstances and seasons
  • 00:03:28.190 --> 00:03:30.160
  • that are difficult.
  • 00:03:30.170 --> 00:03:32.020
  • You might even feel like you're in the middle of one right now.
  • 00:03:32.030 --> 00:03:35.200
  • If so, I really hope you receive this truth.
  • 00:03:35.210 --> 00:03:38.140
  • God has made a way for you to experience
  • 00:03:38.150 --> 00:03:41.030
  • peace in your life.
  • 00:03:41.040 --> 00:03:42.260
  • He will get you to the other side of your storm.
  • 00:03:42.270 --> 00:03:46.030
  • announcer: If you feel like you're experiencing
  • 00:03:46.040 --> 00:03:48.040
  • a storm in your life, whether in your health,
  • 00:03:48.050 --> 00:03:51.100
  • finances, or relationships, you can have hope today
  • 00:03:51.110 --> 00:03:55.080
  • knowing that God sees what you're going through,
  • 00:03:55.090 --> 00:03:57.280
  • and he wants to calm the storms of your life.
  • 00:03:57.290 --> 00:04:01.200
  • Today, with your generous gift of any size,
  • 00:04:01.210 --> 00:04:04.170
  • you can request Pastor Bobby's new message,
  • 00:04:04.180 --> 00:04:07.040
  • "Peace In Your Storms."
  • 00:04:07.050 --> 00:04:09.090
  • This powerful message will remind you
  • 00:04:09.100 --> 00:04:11.080
  • that you are not alone,
  • 00:04:11.090 --> 00:04:13.120
  • and that God is aware of the storm you're facing.
  • 00:04:13.130 --> 00:04:16.190

  • Call, write, or go online today to request these inspiring,
  • 00:04:31.150 --> 00:04:35.230
  • life-changing resources.
  • 00:04:35.240 --> 00:04:38.010
  • No matter how great the storm, God is with you,
  • 00:04:38.020 --> 00:04:41.110
  • and he will get you through it.
  • 00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:43.120
  • 00:04:44.250 --> 00:04:54.250
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:14.070
  • Hannah: Thank you, choir.
  • 00:07:14.080 --> 00:07:15.210
  • You may be seated.
  • 00:07:15.220 --> 00:07:17.240
  • In preparation for the message, Matthew 5:33.
  • 00:07:17.250 --> 00:07:22.190
  • "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago,
  • 00:07:22.200 --> 00:07:27.030
  • 'Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord
  • 00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:30.250
  • the vows you have made.'
  • 00:07:30.260 --> 00:07:33.010
  • But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven,
  • 00:07:33.020 --> 00:07:38.290
  • for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his
  • 00:07:39.000 --> 00:07:42.200
  • footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city
  • 00:07:42.210 --> 00:07:47.100
  • of the Great King.
  • 00:07:47.110 --> 00:07:49.210
  • And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one
  • 00:07:49.220 --> 00:07:54.040
  • hair white or black.
  • 00:07:54.050 --> 00:07:56.140
  • All you need to say is simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything beyond
  • 00:07:56.150 --> 00:08:02.190
  • this comes from the evil one."
  • 00:08:02.200 --> 00:08:06.040
  • Church family, we are aiming to be people of absolute honesty,
  • 00:08:06.050 --> 00:08:11.030
  • which also blesses us with enduring serenity, amen?
  • 00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:17.270
  • 00:08:17.280 --> 00:08:27.270
  • 00:08:27.280 --> 00:08:30.160
  • I keep fighting voices in my mind
  • 00:08:30.170 --> 00:08:34.070
  • that say I'm not enough
  • 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:39.050
  • every single lie that tells me
  • 00:08:43.110 --> 00:08:46.130
  • I will never measure up
  • 00:08:46.140 --> 00:08:52.070
  • Am I more than just the sum
  • 00:08:56.110 --> 00:08:59.030
  • of every high, every low?
  • 00:08:59.040 --> 00:09:04.100
  • Remind me once again just who I am
  • 00:09:09.010 --> 00:09:13.250
  • 'cause I need to know, oh
  • 00:09:13.260 --> 00:09:20.210
  • You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
  • 00:09:20.220 --> 00:09:27.050
  • You say I am strong when I think I am weak
  • 00:09:27.060 --> 00:09:33.140
  • You say I am held when I am falling short
  • 00:09:33.150 --> 00:09:40.000
  • And when I don't belong you say I am yours
  • 00:09:40.010 --> 00:09:47.120
  • and I believe
  • 00:09:47.130 --> 00:09:50.070
  • Oh, I believe
  • 00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:53.090
  • What you say of me I believe
  • 00:09:53.100 --> 00:09:59.170
  • The only thing that matters now
  • 00:10:00.290 --> 00:10:04.100
  • is everything you think of me
  • 00:10:04.110 --> 00:10:10.130
  • In you I find my worth
  • 00:10:13.270 --> 00:10:16.150
  • in you I find my identity, oh
  • 00:10:16.160 --> 00:10:25.130
  • You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
  • 00:10:25.140 --> 00:10:31.280
  • You say I am strong when I think I am weak
  • 00:10:31.290 --> 00:10:38.130
  • You say I am held when I am falling short
  • 00:10:38.140 --> 00:10:44.240
  • And when I don't belong, oh, you say I am yours
  • 00:10:44.250 --> 00:10:52.020
  • and I believe
  • 00:10:52.030 --> 00:10:55.020
  • Oh, I believe
  • 00:10:55.030 --> 00:10:58.050
  • What you say of me I believe
  • 00:10:58.060 --> 00:11:06.080
  • Taking all I have
  • 00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:11.120
  • and now I'm laying it at your feet
  • 00:11:11.130 --> 00:11:17.280
  • You'll have every failure, God
  • 00:11:22.050 --> 00:11:25.160
  • You'll have every victory, oh
  • 00:11:25.170 --> 00:11:33.140
  • You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
  • 00:11:33.150 --> 00:11:39.290
  • You say I am strong when I think I am weak
  • 00:11:40.000 --> 00:11:46.150
  • You say I am held when I am falling short
  • 00:11:46.160 --> 00:11:52.290
  • And when I don't belong you say I am yours
  • 00:11:53.000 --> 00:12:00.040
  • and I believe
  • 00:12:00.050 --> 00:12:03.120
  • Yes, I believe
  • 00:12:03.130 --> 00:12:06.080
  • What you say of me I believe
  • 00:12:06.090 --> 00:12:12.200
  • Oh, and I believe
  • 00:12:12.210 --> 00:12:16.100
  • Oh, I believe
  • 00:12:16.110 --> 00:12:19.060
  • What you say of me I believe
  • 00:12:19.070 --> 00:12:27.150
  • What you say of me
  • 00:12:31.290 --> 00:12:38.260
  • Oh, I believe, believe, believe, believe
  • 00:12:38.270 --> 00:12:45.110
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:12:45.120 --> 00:12:52.130
  • Bobby: Well, our guests today are Colbey Northcutt
  • 00:12:52.140 --> 00:12:54.110
  • and Raymond Daniels.
  • 00:12:54.120 --> 00:12:56.050
  • So, these two have been members of our church for about--
  • 00:12:56.060 --> 00:12:58.280
  • I think maybe two, three years, something like that, and it's
  • 00:12:58.290 --> 00:13:02.000
  • such a joy to finally have a chance to interview them
  • 00:13:02.010 --> 00:13:04.280
  • about their faith and their journey and their relationship.
  • 00:13:04.290 --> 00:13:07.120
  • These two are world champion karate--
  • 00:13:07.130 --> 00:13:10.090
  • competitive karate fighters.
  • 00:13:10.100 --> 00:13:11.260
  • Is that what you say?
  • 00:13:11.270 --> 00:13:13.140
  • Colbey Northcutt: Yeah, you could say that.
  • 00:13:13.150 --> 00:13:14.190
  • Raymond Daniels: Yeah, martial artists.
  • 00:13:14.200 --> 00:13:15.240
  • Bobby: All right, martial artists, yes, yeah, and we'd
  • 00:13:15.250 --> 00:13:17.060
  • just like to welcome them.
  • 00:13:17.070 --> 00:13:18.140
  • Colbey Northcutt and Raymond Daniels,
  • 00:13:18.150 --> 00:13:19.080
  • thank you for coming.
  • 00:13:19.090 --> 00:13:21.040
  • Colbey: Oh, thank you for having us.
  • 00:13:21.050 --> 00:13:22.150
  • Bobby: What a joy. Colbey: Thank you.
  • 00:13:22.160 --> 00:13:24.080
  • Bobby: So, first of all, you guys are engaged
  • 00:13:24.090 --> 00:13:27.020
  • to be married pretty soon here.
  • 00:13:27.030 --> 00:13:29.140
  • How did you meet, actually?
  • 00:13:29.150 --> 00:13:32.000
  • Raymond: Yeah, we--
  • 00:13:32.010 --> 00:13:33.140
  • Bobby: Did you get in a fight?
  • 00:13:33.150 --> 00:13:34.170
  • Colbey: No, that's actually a first.
  • 00:13:34.180 --> 00:13:36.110
  • We've never gotten that one.
  • 00:13:36.120 --> 00:13:37.240
  • You know, I don't even remember when we met.
  • 00:13:37.250 --> 00:13:39.200
  • We've known each other for about ten years or so, just kind of
  • 00:13:39.210 --> 00:13:43.190
  • through mutual friends, through competing in different
  • 00:13:43.200 --> 00:13:46.020
  • tournaments all over the world.
  • 00:13:46.030 --> 00:13:47.180
  • So, I cannot tell you when we met, we both can't,
  • 00:13:47.190 --> 00:13:51.200
  • but we've known each other for a while.
  • 00:13:51.210 --> 00:13:53.100
  • Raymond: Yeah, so we've been dating for three years,
  • 00:13:53.110 --> 00:13:55.120
  • and we're engaged.
  • 00:13:55.130 --> 00:13:56.230
  • We're getting married August 24, so we're really excited
  • 00:13:56.240 --> 00:13:58.110
  • about that, to take that next step.
  • 00:13:58.120 --> 00:14:00.140
  • Bobby: You're both really, like, fighters, right?
  • 00:14:00.150 --> 00:14:02.060
  • Like, your dad, actually, was like a competitive bodybuilder,
  • 00:14:02.070 --> 00:14:07.000
  • strength guy.
  • 00:14:07.010 --> 00:14:08.260
  • I think your brother is a fighter, too, or something.
  • 00:14:08.270 --> 00:14:10.160
  • It's like a family.
  • 00:14:10.170 --> 00:14:12.040
  • Colbey: Yeah, yeah, my dad. It did come in the family.
  • 00:14:12.050 --> 00:14:14.010
  • It was kind of a requirement for us.
  • 00:14:14.020 --> 00:14:15.250
  • So, my dad is a black belt.
  • 00:14:15.260 --> 00:14:16.230
  • He did do bodybuilding and powerlifting,
  • 00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:19.110
  • but he did train us as little kids.
  • 00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:22.000
  • It initially was self-defense, but when we were little
  • 00:14:22.010 --> 00:14:25.120
  • we started together.
  • 00:14:25.130 --> 00:14:26.220
  • I was seven and my brother was four.
  • 00:14:26.230 --> 00:14:28.180
  • We started doing tournaments and realized we were kind of good,
  • 00:14:28.190 --> 00:14:32.120
  • so we turned into more of a competitive aspect and then
  • 00:14:32.130 --> 00:14:34.270
  • obviously as we got older it turned into fighting
  • 00:14:34.280 --> 00:14:37.000
  • professionally, so--
  • 00:14:37.010 --> 00:14:38.240
  • Bobby: I feel bad--I would feel so bad if a robber tried
  • 00:14:38.250 --> 00:14:40.130
  • to come into your house, like, when you were about
  • 00:14:40.140 --> 00:14:42.180
  • 18 and 16--
  • 00:14:42.190 --> 00:14:44.060
  • Colbey: Oh, yeah, I got two brothers and my dad does it,
  • 00:14:44.070 --> 00:14:46.180
  • as well, so it is a family affair.
  • 00:14:46.190 --> 00:14:48.200
  • Bobby: And faith was a part of your upbringing, right?
  • 00:14:48.210 --> 00:14:50.230
  • I mean, was your dad a Christian?
  • 00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:52.130
  • Or I can't remember.
  • 00:14:52.140 --> 00:14:54.030
  • Yeah, was that--how did that work in terms of sports
  • 00:14:54.040 --> 00:14:56.230
  • and competitive and fighting?
  • 00:14:56.240 --> 00:14:58.270
  • Colbey: He is a Christian.
  • 00:14:58.280 --> 00:15:00.150
  • He did raise us to be Christians, so it's something
  • 00:15:00.160 --> 00:15:01.280
  • that's been in our household our whole life, so I think being
  • 00:15:01.290 --> 00:15:05.290
  • in such a competitive kind of sport of martial arts it's not
  • 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:09.120
  • something that you would really see most fighters be Christians
  • 00:15:09.130 --> 00:15:12.250
  • and be out about their faith, you know?
  • 00:15:12.260 --> 00:15:16.030
  • That's something that it's kind of looked at as a violent sport
  • 00:15:16.040 --> 00:15:19.050
  • and obviously martial arts as a whole, when you're a kid,
  • 00:15:19.060 --> 00:15:21.020
  • it does teach you those values of respect and honor
  • 00:15:21.030 --> 00:15:24.080
  • and to respect your opponents, so coming from a traditional
  • 00:15:24.090 --> 00:15:27.280
  • martial art we learned that, as well, also through our faith.
  • 00:15:27.290 --> 00:15:31.080
  • So now, being a professional fighter we kinda have it from
  • 00:15:31.090 --> 00:15:33.110
  • both aspects, and it's really awesome.
  • 00:15:33.120 --> 00:15:36.100
  • I can't explain it.
  • 00:15:36.110 --> 00:15:37.290
  • Bobby: And I experienced that too.
  • 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:39.090
  • When I was a kid my dad put us in taekwondo,
  • 00:15:39.100 --> 00:15:40.280
  • and it was very much--
  • 00:15:40.290 --> 00:15:42.130
  • the first thing a new student learns is self-defense,
  • 00:15:42.140 --> 00:15:44.030
  • respect of your opponents, protecting people.
  • 00:15:44.040 --> 00:15:46.270
  • Like, there is a whole code of honor that's a part of it, and I
  • 00:15:46.280 --> 00:15:49.250
  • think that lines up very nicely with a Christian ethic, and
  • 00:15:49.260 --> 00:15:53.170
  • there is probably a lot of MMA and karate, different fighters,
  • 00:15:53.180 --> 00:15:57.230
  • that faith is a really important part of life for them,
  • 00:15:57.240 --> 00:16:00.020
  • don't you think?
  • 00:16:00.030 --> 00:16:01.190
  • Raymond: Yeah, definitely, definitely.
  • 00:16:01.200 --> 00:16:02.270
  • I think sometimes it gets lost in translation because of the
  • 00:16:02.280 --> 00:16:06.190
  • aspect of the sport, but the philosophy of a martial artist
  • 00:16:06.200 --> 00:16:10.090
  • is what it's all about.
  • 00:16:10.100 --> 00:16:11.230
  • We do it on a daily basis with our martial arts studio in the
  • 00:16:11.240 --> 00:16:15.150
  • city of Orange and stuff, and so we try and reiterate that
  • 00:16:15.160 --> 00:16:18.020
  • to all of our students as well.
  • 00:16:18.030 --> 00:16:19.210
  • Bobby: You train a lotta kids too.
  • 00:16:19.220 --> 00:16:21.150
  • I think what's so great about martial arts is--
  • 00:16:21.160 --> 00:16:24.070
  • we were talking about this downstairs--
  • 00:16:24.080 --> 00:16:25.230
  • life is a fight, and so when you're
  • 00:16:25.240 --> 00:16:27.200
  • learning to fight literally it's really, in a way,
  • 00:16:27.210 --> 00:16:29.280
  • training you for life, isn't it?
  • 00:16:29.290 --> 00:16:31.190
  • Colbey: Yeah, absolutely.
  • 00:16:31.200 --> 00:16:33.030
  • Raymond: Yeah, yeah, it's training you to not only have
  • 00:16:33.040 --> 00:16:35.070
  • faith in God and have faith in God's plans for you, so you're
  • 00:16:35.080 --> 00:16:39.180
  • constantly having that battle each and every day, so we're
  • 00:16:39.190 --> 00:16:42.120
  • able to go out there and do it on a grand stage,
  • 00:16:42.130 --> 00:16:45.190
  • so to speak, and show our faith
  • 00:16:45.200 --> 00:16:48.080
  • and our ability to fight through adversity.
  • 00:16:48.090 --> 00:16:50.250
  • Bobby: That's awesome.
  • 00:16:50.260 --> 00:16:52.090
  • Now, you used to be a police officer, right?
  • 00:16:52.100 --> 00:16:53.220
  • Raymond: Yes, sir.
  • 00:16:53.230 --> 00:16:55.050
  • Bobby: So, what happened for you that you left the police
  • 00:16:55.060 --> 00:16:56.290
  • force and then now you're a successful professional fighter?
  • 00:16:57.000 --> 00:17:00.150
  • I mean, how did that happen?
  • 00:17:00.160 --> 00:17:01.290
  • Raymond: Well, I was--
  • 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:03.120
  • I had aspirations to be a police officer
  • 00:17:03.130 --> 00:17:04.230
  • when I was a young man, and I just--I grew up really
  • 00:17:04.240 --> 00:17:07.230
  • admiring law enforcement, and I became a police officer
  • 00:17:07.240 --> 00:17:10.270
  • at 21 for Long Beach Police Department,
  • 00:17:10.280 --> 00:17:13.260
  • and I did that for a number of years.
  • 00:17:13.270 --> 00:17:15.150
  • I had a great time doing it, but I did it because I wanted to
  • 00:17:15.160 --> 00:17:18.090
  • really help people, and then I found that being a police
  • 00:17:18.100 --> 00:17:21.060
  • officer you are able to dab, but you're not able to touch
  • 00:17:21.070 --> 00:17:23.140
  • and influence as many lives as you would think
  • 00:17:23.150 --> 00:17:25.120
  • that you would be able to.
  • 00:17:25.130 --> 00:17:27.080
  • So, I had a talent and a skillset as a martial artist and
  • 00:17:27.090 --> 00:17:31.070
  • as a fighter, so I had to step outside my own personal comfort
  • 00:17:31.080 --> 00:17:35.180
  • zone and step out on faith to pursue the career
  • 00:17:35.190 --> 00:17:38.190
  • of a professional fighter and to leave
  • 00:17:38.200 --> 00:17:40.220
  • the law enforcement behind.
  • 00:17:40.230 --> 00:17:42.190
  • So, it was a very scary thing at the time, honestly, to be able
  • 00:17:42.200 --> 00:17:45.130
  • to leave a very comfortable career to go out and pursue a
  • 00:17:45.140 --> 00:17:48.230
  • dream and to be able to put myself in a place where I could
  • 00:17:48.240 --> 00:17:53.200
  • be able to fellowship with more people and touch more lives
  • 00:17:53.210 --> 00:17:56.160
  • in a positive way than I could as a police officer.
  • 00:17:56.170 --> 00:17:58.220
  • Bobby: And you'd say, too-- like, I mean, that's a message
  • 00:17:58.230 --> 00:18:00.230
  • you wanna get across to your audience, which is big,
  • 00:18:00.240 --> 00:18:03.050
  • to pursue those dreams.
  • 00:18:03.060 --> 00:18:04.250
  • Not be afraid to leave the old behind to pursue something,
  • 00:18:04.260 --> 00:18:06.280
  • but even if it's something really noble like being
  • 00:18:06.290 --> 00:18:08.210
  • a police officer.
  • 00:18:08.220 --> 00:18:10.140
  • Raymond: Yeah, I think a lotta times people are worried
  • 00:18:10.150 --> 00:18:13.180
  • about what people are gonna think or what people are gonna
  • 00:18:13.190 --> 00:18:16.210
  • say about them, so they're afraid to step out on their
  • 00:18:16.220 --> 00:18:19.050
  • faith and to pursue it as something that God
  • 00:18:19.060 --> 00:18:22.050
  • has blessed them with.
  • 00:18:22.060 --> 00:18:24.000
  • I believe that you have a talent.
  • 00:18:24.010 --> 00:18:25.180
  • You were blessed with some skillset and ability and should
  • 00:18:25.190 --> 00:18:27.240
  • give back to him with what you do with that,
  • 00:18:27.250 --> 00:18:30.140
  • and so that's what I try and we try to do on--
  • 00:18:30.150 --> 00:18:33.230
  • with our opportunities as professional fighters.
  • 00:18:33.240 --> 00:18:36.030
  • Bobby: Yeah.
  • 00:18:36.040 --> 00:18:37.020
  • How did you guys find the church, by the way?
  • 00:18:37.030 --> 00:18:38.010
  • That's something that I was curious about.
  • 00:18:38.020 --> 00:18:39.150
  • Colbey: I love telling the story.
  • 00:18:39.160 --> 00:18:40.270
  • It's so funny, because I've been living here now for about
  • 00:18:40.280 --> 00:18:43.140
  • three years and when I first moved here--
  • 00:18:43.150 --> 00:18:45.100
  • I'm from Houston, Texas,
  • 00:18:45.110 --> 00:18:46.270
  • so I went to Lakewood Church with Joel Osteen.
  • 00:18:46.280 --> 00:18:48.160
  • He is my pastor, been there for years, and so we were watching
  • 00:18:48.170 --> 00:18:50.170
  • his message on TV and as soon as the message was over you came on
  • 00:18:50.180 --> 00:18:54.230
  • TV with Joel, and Joel introduced you and said,
  • 00:18:54.240 --> 00:18:57.190
  • "Hey, this is my friend Bobby.
  • 00:18:57.200 --> 00:18:59.130
  • Stay tuned. Watch his message."
  • 00:18:59.140 --> 00:19:01.080
  • We did and the very next Sunday we found your church,
  • 00:19:01.090 --> 00:19:04.080
  • and we have been here ever since.
  • 00:19:04.090 --> 00:19:06.170
  • Bobby: It's a great story.
  • 00:19:06.180 --> 00:19:09.130
  • One thing about that, it speaks a lot to Joel,
  • 00:19:09.140 --> 00:19:12.240
  • because that thing that they put on
  • 00:19:12.250 --> 00:19:15.030
  • is at the end of Joel's show, not the beginning of ours.
  • 00:19:15.040 --> 00:19:17.260
  • In other words, they--it's like a gift from them to us.
  • 00:19:17.270 --> 00:19:21.020
  • It was interesting because when I first started pastoring here,
  • 00:19:21.030 --> 00:19:23.210
  • and it was in utter crisis.
  • 00:19:23.220 --> 00:19:25.180
  • I mean, I didn't--we didn't know how to fix the problems, our
  • 00:19:25.190 --> 00:19:28.160
  • financial problems and wounds and all that stuff, and I called
  • 00:19:28.170 --> 00:19:31.070
  • a lot of pastors of big churches and things.
  • 00:19:31.080 --> 00:19:33.170
  • I couldn't get a call back from anyone.
  • 00:19:33.180 --> 00:19:35.130
  • I had one big pastor that's actually preached here before.
  • 00:19:35.140 --> 00:19:38.110
  • His secretary said, "You're not a big deal anymore,
  • 00:19:38.120 --> 00:19:40.100
  • and he only works with people who are a big deal."
  • 00:19:40.110 --> 00:19:42.170
  • Raymond: Wow, wow.
  • 00:19:42.180 --> 00:19:44.130
  • Bobby: So, that was a real thing that happened,
  • 00:19:44.140 --> 00:19:46.010
  • so that happened.
  • 00:19:46.020 --> 00:19:47.250
  • One of our congregants had called his office, so this was
  • 00:19:47.260 --> 00:19:50.060
  • the kinda thing, just feeling as a young pastor rejected,
  • 00:19:50.070 --> 00:19:53.140
  • and I never reached out to Joel.
  • 00:19:53.150 --> 00:19:55.050
  • He reached out to me, and so through a friend of ours, Phil,
  • 00:19:55.060 --> 00:19:58.100
  • he said, "You know, he wants to meet you and talk to you,"
  • 00:19:58.110 --> 00:20:00.200
  • and just super encouraging.
  • 00:20:00.210 --> 00:20:02.160
  • He, like, gave me a cellphone, he text me, we became friends,
  • 00:20:02.170 --> 00:20:05.210
  • and then they offered to do this thing at Lakewood, like,
  • 00:20:05.220 --> 00:20:07.240
  • "Let me promote your church."
  • 00:20:07.250 --> 00:20:09.130
  • So, even though they're a totally different tradition than
  • 00:20:09.140 --> 00:20:11.050
  • we are, it was such a great thing to show that churches and
  • 00:20:11.060 --> 00:20:14.050
  • different denominations and groups really how much you can
  • 00:20:14.060 --> 00:20:18.020
  • do just when you support young leaders and make a difference.
  • 00:20:18.030 --> 00:20:21.020
  • That really gave me so much strength because at the time
  • 00:20:21.030 --> 00:20:23.210
  • Joel was like the--still is, bigger than any of the other
  • 00:20:23.220 --> 00:20:26.100
  • pastors I was reaching out to, so it was really a cool thing.
  • 00:20:26.110 --> 00:20:28.230
  • Colbey: It's really cool.
  • 00:20:28.240 --> 00:20:30.150
  • Like, God puts certain people in certain positions for a reason,
  • 00:20:30.160 --> 00:20:33.080
  • and we were talking about this downstairs.
  • 00:20:33.090 --> 00:20:34.270
  • We've never seen that message again ever, so we totally
  • 00:20:34.280 --> 00:20:37.140
  • believe that we were meant to see your message
  • 00:20:37.150 --> 00:20:39.160
  • and are meant to be here for a reason, so--
  • 00:20:39.170 --> 00:20:41.130
  • Bobby: That's awesome. Well, we believe it too.
  • 00:20:41.140 --> 00:20:42.250
  • Well, thank you guys so much for your message, too,
  • 00:20:42.260 --> 00:20:45.020
  • and we hope to continue to encourage fighters
  • 00:20:45.030 --> 00:20:46.230
  • and other people to talk about their faith
  • 00:20:46.240 --> 00:20:49.080
  • and encourage others and mentor others like you do.
  • 00:20:49.090 --> 00:20:52.070
  • I can't wait to see what your kids
  • 00:20:52.080 --> 00:20:53.270
  • are gonna be like.
  • 00:20:53.280 --> 00:20:55.100
  • They're gonna be superheroes, you know, amazing.
  • 00:20:55.110 --> 00:20:57.250
  • Colbey: We hear that all the time.
  • 00:20:57.260 --> 00:20:59.150
  • Raymond: Yeah.
  • 00:20:59.160 --> 00:21:01.090
  • Bobby: Well, great.
  • 00:21:01.100 --> 00:21:02.200
  • Colbey Northcutt, Raymond Daniels,
  • 00:21:02.210 --> 00:21:03.240
  • thank you guys so much.
  • 00:21:03.250 --> 00:21:05.020
  • We love you and look forward to doing your wedding pretty soon.
  • 00:21:05.030 --> 00:21:06.190
  • God bless you both.
  • 00:21:06.200 --> 00:21:08.020
  • Colbey: Thank you for having us.
  • 00:21:08.030 --> 00:21:10.020
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:21:10.030 --> 00:21:13.120
  • Chad Blake: Well, this last week families from our church,
  • 00:21:14.120 --> 00:21:17.090
  • as well as foster families from around the county, participated
  • 00:21:17.100 --> 00:21:21.060
  • in a soccer camp that we put on and actually this morning we are
  • 00:21:21.070 --> 00:21:25.010
  • privileged to have a team of coaches from around the world
  • 00:21:25.020 --> 00:21:28.220
  • who are actually here.
  • 00:21:28.230 --> 00:21:30.020
  • Would you guys stand real quick as we just applaud?
  • 00:21:30.030 --> 00:21:33.070
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:21:33.080 --> 00:21:41.260
  • So, this team is from Ambassadors Football,
  • 00:21:43.110 --> 00:21:45.070
  • and it's--like I said, it's a team from international coaches
  • 00:21:45.080 --> 00:21:47.130
  • from all over the world who take this week as a ministry,
  • 00:21:47.140 --> 00:21:51.200
  • and they travel around from church to church all over.
  • 00:21:51.210 --> 00:21:54.280
  • Not only teaching kids about soccer, but teaching kids about
  • 00:21:54.290 --> 00:21:57.180
  • Jesus and things that really matter, and we're just so
  • 00:21:57.190 --> 00:22:00.270
  • privileged to have them with us for this last week, but we wanna
  • 00:22:00.280 --> 00:22:03.240
  • pray for them as we just come before the Lord
  • 00:22:03.250 --> 00:22:06.090
  • together in prayer.
  • 00:22:06.100 --> 00:22:07.210
  • Would you join me?
  • 00:22:07.220 --> 00:22:09.090
  • Father God, we are thankful the opportunity we have to gather
  • 00:22:09.100 --> 00:22:12.190
  • here in this place and declare your goodness.
  • 00:22:12.200 --> 00:22:15.240
  • We're so thankful for the soccer camp from this last week and
  • 00:22:15.250 --> 00:22:19.030
  • Ambassadors Football and, Lord, we pray blessings upon these
  • 00:22:19.040 --> 00:22:22.170
  • coaches as they take time out of their lives to teach kids skills
  • 00:22:22.180 --> 00:22:27.090
  • about soccer, but more importantly about who you are.
  • 00:22:27.100 --> 00:22:32.160
  • So, Lord, we pray for open doors and smooth traveling for them
  • 00:22:32.170 --> 00:22:36.180
  • over the rest of the summer as they continue to do what you
  • 00:22:36.190 --> 00:22:40.060
  • have called them to do.
  • 00:22:40.070 --> 00:22:42.270
  • Lord, we pray for the families that they encountered
  • 00:22:42.280 --> 00:22:44.270
  • over this last week.
  • 00:22:44.280 --> 00:22:46.290
  • May their lives be forever changed.
  • 00:22:47.000 --> 00:22:49.210
  • May they have a new love for sports, but may they have a new
  • 00:22:49.220 --> 00:22:54.030
  • and deeper love for who you are and that years down later in
  • 00:22:54.040 --> 00:22:58.220
  • life they think about this last week and what it meant to them.
  • 00:22:58.230 --> 00:23:03.160
  • And finally, Lord, we pray for Pastor Bobby, the message
  • 00:23:03.170 --> 00:23:06.200
  • that you have put on his heart.
  • 00:23:06.210 --> 00:23:08.170
  • May his words be your words.
  • 00:23:08.180 --> 00:23:10.130
  • May we have fresh ears and hearts to listen and understand
  • 00:23:10.140 --> 00:23:15.000
  • what it is that you are speaking to us today.
  • 00:23:15.010 --> 00:23:20.260
  • In Jesus's name we pray, amen?
  • 00:23:20.270 --> 00:23:24.080
  • I'd like to invite the ushers forward as we prepare to receive
  • 00:23:24.090 --> 00:23:26.290
  • this morning's tithes and offerings.
  • 00:23:27.000 --> 00:23:29.220
  • Bobby: Hannah and I are so happy you've joined us
  • 00:23:30.250 --> 00:23:33.090
  • in worship today.
  • 00:23:33.100 --> 00:23:34.260
  • We hope that you have found incredible hope and inspiration
  • 00:23:34.270 --> 00:23:37.260
  • from this program.
  • 00:23:37.270 --> 00:23:39.160
  • We can all go through circumstances
  • 00:23:39.170 --> 00:23:41.070
  • and seasons that are difficult.
  • 00:23:41.080 --> 00:23:42.290
  • You might even feel like you're in the middle of one right now.
  • 00:23:43.000 --> 00:23:45.260
  • If so, I really hope you receive this truth.
  • 00:23:45.270 --> 00:23:48.080
  • God has made a way for you to experience his dynamic power
  • 00:23:48.090 --> 00:23:52.270
  • and live in peace.
  • 00:23:52.280 --> 00:23:54.210
  • The reason I can confidently share this
  • 00:23:54.220 --> 00:23:56.220
  • is because God's Word confidently tells it.
  • 00:23:56.230 --> 00:23:59.090
  • In fact, there's one specific story that comes to mind.
  • 00:23:59.100 --> 00:24:02.170
  • In Luke chapter 8, Jesus and his disciples
  • 00:24:02.180 --> 00:24:04.290
  • were crossing a lake when a storm suddenly arose.
  • 00:24:05.000 --> 00:24:08.030
  • As you can imagine, the disciples freaked out
  • 00:24:08.040 --> 00:24:10.130
  • and looked to Jesus for a solution
  • 00:24:10.140 --> 00:24:12.140
  • only to discover he was sleeping.
  • 00:24:12.150 --> 00:24:14.210
  • After they woke him up, Jesus simply spoke peace to the storm,
  • 00:24:14.220 --> 00:24:18.230
  • and instantly it stopped.
  • 00:24:18.240 --> 00:24:21.010
  • Just like the peace and deliverance Jesus
  • 00:24:21.020 --> 00:24:23.060
  • brought to his disciples that day,
  • 00:24:23.070 --> 00:24:25.060
  • I just know he wants to do the same
  • 00:24:25.070 --> 00:24:27.060
  • for you in your life.
  • 00:24:27.070 --> 00:24:29.070
  • Hannah: In John 16:33, Jesus gives us this amazing promise.
  • 00:24:29.080 --> 00:24:34.160
  • "I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace.
  • 00:24:34.170 --> 00:24:39.260
  • In this world, you will have trouble.
  • 00:24:39.270 --> 00:24:42.100
  • But take heart, I have overcome the world."
  • 00:24:42.110 --> 00:24:46.290
  • Yes, there are moments when you might feel alone,
  • 00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:50.060
  • with no clear vision that things are ever going to change.
  • 00:24:50.070 --> 00:24:53.190
  • But if you stand in faith, you can believe God is with you
  • 00:24:53.200 --> 00:24:57.240
  • no matter what kind of storm you face.
  • 00:24:57.250 --> 00:25:00.130
  • And you can trust that he will bring you through it.
  • 00:25:00.140 --> 00:25:05.010
  • announcer: If you feel like you're experiencing
  • 00:25:05.020 --> 00:25:07.000
  • a storm in your life, whether in your health,
  • 00:25:07.010 --> 00:25:10.070
  • finances, or relationships, you can have hope today
  • 00:25:10.080 --> 00:25:14.060
  • knowing that God sees what you're going through,
  • 00:25:14.070 --> 00:25:16.240
  • and he wants to calm the storms of your life.
  • 00:25:16.250 --> 00:25:20.160
  • Today, with your generous gift of any size,
  • 00:25:20.170 --> 00:25:23.150
  • you can request Pastor Bobby's new message,

  • "Peace In Your Storms."

  • This powerful message will remind you
  • 00:25:28.060 --> 00:25:30.040
  • that you are not alone,
  • 00:25:30.050 --> 00:25:32.060
  • and that God is aware of the storm you're facing.
  • 00:25:32.070 --> 00:25:35.150

  • and he will get you through it.
  • 00:26:00.130 --> 00:26:02.280
  • Bobby: This is something both Hannah and I
  • 00:26:02.290 --> 00:26:04.270
  • actively do every single day.
  • 00:26:04.280 --> 00:26:06.210
  • We remember and remind ourselves that those storms may happen,
  • 00:26:06.220 --> 00:26:10.200
  • Jesus is in the boat with us.
  • 00:26:10.210 --> 00:26:13.000
  • He's called us to the other side.
  • 00:26:13.010 --> 00:26:15.010
  • He gives us peace in the storm while helping us to get through.
  • 00:26:15.020 --> 00:26:19.030
  • And he's going to do the same for you.
  • 00:26:19.040 --> 00:26:21.030
  • He's going to get you to the other side.
  • 00:26:21.040 --> 00:26:23.230

  • we're going to send you my message
  • 00:26:28.270 --> 00:26:30.160
  • "Peace In Your Storms,"
  • 00:26:30.170 --> 00:26:32.210
  • as well as the Perfect Peace Scripture card set.
  • 00:26:32.220 --> 00:26:35.290
  • Thank you for all you do to support this ministry.
  • 00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:38.150
  • Your gifts, prayers, and words of encouragement
  • 00:26:38.160 --> 00:26:41.000
  • mean the world to us,
  • 00:26:41.010 --> 00:26:42.270
  • and we could not do it without you.
  • 00:26:42.280 --> 00:26:44.250
  • Thank you, and remember always God loves you, and so do we.
  • 00:26:44.260 --> 00:26:49.150
  • 00:26:50.220 --> 00:27:00.200
  • I will rise
  • 00:31:39.160 --> 00:31:42.190
  • I will rise
  • 00:31:42.220 --> 00:31:45.130
  • I will rise
  • 00:31:45.160 --> 00:31:48.070
  • I will rise
  • 00:31:48.100 --> 00:31:52.110
  • I will rise
  • 00:31:52.140 --> 00:31:58.120
  • I will rise
  • 00:31:58.150 --> 00:32:08.120
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:32:12.190 --> 00:32:18.160
  • Bobby: Welcome. Thank you for joining us today.
  • 00:32:18.170 --> 00:32:21.090
  • If you're ever in Irvine or Orange County or maybe you're
  • 00:32:21.100 --> 00:32:24.060
  • going to Disneyland, come on down to Shepherd's Grove.
  • 00:32:24.070 --> 00:32:27.160
  • We would really, really like to meet you.
  • 00:32:27.170 --> 00:32:29.090
  • If you have kids bring 'em.
  • 00:32:29.100 --> 00:32:30.270
  • We'll teach them the things of God.
  • 00:32:30.280 --> 00:32:32.190
  • Friends, will you hold your hands out like this
  • 00:32:32.200 --> 00:32:34.070
  • as we say this together?
  • 00:32:34.080 --> 00:32:36.190
  • I'm not what I do. I'm not what I have.
  • 00:32:36.200 --> 00:32:40.180
  • I'm not what people say about me.
  • 00:32:40.190 --> 00:32:43.180
  • I am the beloved of God. It's who I am.
  • 00:32:43.190 --> 00:32:48.030
  • No one can take it from me. I don't have to worry.
  • 00:32:48.040 --> 00:32:52.120
  • I don't have to hurry.
  • 00:32:52.130 --> 00:32:54.170
  • I can trust my friend Jesus and share his love with the world.
  • 00:32:54.180 --> 00:32:59.290
  • Thanks. You can be seated.
  • 00:33:00.020 --> 00:33:03.010
  • Well, today we're talking about serenity that comes from being
  • 00:33:03.020 --> 00:33:07.110
  • a person of integrity, of being somebody who does their best
  • 00:33:07.120 --> 00:33:11.170
  • to go above and beyond, to be honest in speech,
  • 00:33:11.180 --> 00:33:15.090
  • in word, in deed.
  • 00:33:15.100 --> 00:33:17.020
  • Not legalistically, but that you're just overflowing with
  • 00:33:17.030 --> 00:33:20.120
  • honesty because it's what you love, it's what you believe in,
  • 00:33:20.130 --> 00:33:23.210
  • and that you understand that there is a great reward
  • 00:33:23.220 --> 00:33:26.070
  • for honesty, and there is a great vice or--
  • 00:33:26.080 --> 00:33:29.270
  • I don't wanna say curse, but it is a curse
  • 00:33:29.280 --> 00:33:32.010
  • if you fall into a life of deception or bending
  • 00:33:32.020 --> 00:33:36.200
  • the truth or mask wearing.
  • 00:33:36.210 --> 00:33:39.150
  • That an honest life leads to intimacy.
  • 00:33:39.160 --> 00:33:42.170
  • An honest life leads to trust.
  • 00:33:42.180 --> 00:33:44.270
  • If you wanna be a great leader you have to be known
  • 00:33:44.280 --> 00:33:47.110
  • as an honest person.
  • 00:33:47.120 --> 00:33:49.070
  • Nobody wants to follow somebody that's secretive or somebody
  • 00:33:49.080 --> 00:33:52.210
  • they're not sure they can trust or not sure that the person
  • 00:33:52.220 --> 00:33:56.080
  • who's talking to them is really being forthright about where
  • 00:33:56.090 --> 00:33:59.240
  • we're going or what we're doing.
  • 00:33:59.250 --> 00:34:01.240
  • In fact, when you're following somebody that's dishonest,
  • 00:34:01.250 --> 00:34:04.060
  • it can feel like you're competing with them.
  • 00:34:04.070 --> 00:34:06.070
  • That they're--that you're not on the same team as they,
  • 00:34:06.080 --> 00:34:08.140
  • so it's so important that in our leadership, in our families,
  • 00:34:08.150 --> 00:34:11.140
  • in our intimacy we understand that the truth sets us free,
  • 00:34:11.150 --> 00:34:15.090
  • but that deception is at the core of the kingdom of darkness,
  • 00:34:15.100 --> 00:34:19.210
  • and this is gonna be a spiritual truth we're
  • 00:34:19.220 --> 00:34:21.220
  • gonna talk about today.
  • 00:34:21.230 --> 00:34:23.180
  • That the kingdom of darkness is not founded on hate,
  • 00:34:23.190 --> 00:34:25.290
  • even though it's hateful.
  • 00:34:26.000 --> 00:34:27.250
  • Kingdom of darkness is not founded on violence,
  • 00:34:27.260 --> 00:34:30.040
  • even though it's violent.
  • 00:34:30.050 --> 00:34:31.240
  • The kingdom of darkness is founded on deception.
  • 00:34:31.250 --> 00:34:34.260
  • It only thrives when God's people participate in deception,
  • 00:34:34.270 --> 00:34:39.110
  • deception of any form, and that's why we wanna be careful
  • 00:34:39.120 --> 00:34:42.130
  • that we become people who are yes is yes and our no is no.
  • 00:34:42.140 --> 00:34:46.190
  • It's good for our marriage, it's good for our life,
  • 00:34:46.200 --> 00:34:48.150
  • and it's scary, scary, scary when we haven't lived
  • 00:34:48.160 --> 00:34:51.290
  • that way in the past.
  • 00:34:52.000 --> 00:34:53.270
  • It's a skill, actually, and we're gonna talk
  • 00:34:53.280 --> 00:34:56.060
  • about that today.
  • 00:34:56.070 --> 00:34:57.280
  • Now, first of all, all of us have lied.
  • 00:34:57.290 --> 00:34:59.180
  • All of us have deceived in our lives.
  • 00:34:59.190 --> 00:35:01.110
  • In fact, there was a recent study that said the average
  • 00:35:01.120 --> 00:35:03.280
  • person in a conversation with a new person is going to lie three
  • 00:35:03.290 --> 00:35:06.230
  • times, so now when you actually study it you find that most of
  • 00:35:06.240 --> 00:35:11.260
  • those lies are, sort of--I wanna call them polite lies.
  • 00:35:11.270 --> 00:35:14.130
  • They're friendly lies, like,
  • 00:35:14.140 --> 00:35:16.020
  • "Oh, you look lovely today," you know?
  • 00:35:16.030 --> 00:35:17.240
  • Find out later they didn't think that, you know, things like
  • 00:35:17.250 --> 00:35:19.270
  • that, so many of us we do this kind of thing in life, and it's
  • 00:35:19.280 --> 00:35:24.070
  • easy for some of us to find ourselves doing what's called
  • 00:35:24.080 --> 00:35:27.110
  • compulsive lying, where you lie and you don't know why.
  • 00:35:27.120 --> 00:35:30.060
  • It's easy for some of us to lie, for example,
  • 00:35:30.070 --> 00:35:32.190
  • to get out of stuff.
  • 00:35:32.200 --> 00:35:34.130
  • You know, you have something that somebody asks you to do
  • 00:35:34.140 --> 00:35:36.150
  • tonight, and you have nothing going on, but you don't really
  • 00:35:36.160 --> 00:35:38.120
  • feel like going, and so I wanna talk about when--
  • 00:35:38.130 --> 00:35:42.190
  • those are some of the first steps that happens
  • 00:35:42.200 --> 00:35:44.130
  • to becoming a deceptive person and becoming totally ensnared
  • 00:35:44.140 --> 00:35:47.180
  • by darkness and totally shutting off your life
  • 00:35:47.190 --> 00:35:50.130
  • to God's blessing and God's favor.
  • 00:35:50.140 --> 00:35:53.020
  • Have you ever been caught in a lie, by the way?
  • 00:35:53.030 --> 00:35:54.260
  • What a horrible experience that is.
  • 00:35:54.270 --> 00:35:57.260
  • If you've ever been a kid, you've been caught in a lie,
  • 00:35:57.270 --> 00:36:00.190
  • and if you've never been a kid then you have super powers,
  • 00:36:00.200 --> 00:36:04.140
  • and I wanna meet you.
  • 00:36:04.150 --> 00:36:08.110
  • Actually, there was a guy I just saw recently.
  • 00:36:08.120 --> 00:36:11.040
  • There was a viral video that went around
  • 00:36:11.050 --> 00:36:14.100
  • of this 28-year-old man on an airplane
  • 00:36:14.110 --> 00:36:16.290
  • that got into some argument with a neighbor,
  • 00:36:17.000 --> 00:36:19.000
  • and they started going back and forth, and I guess as a way
  • 00:36:19.010 --> 00:36:22.100
  • to flex this guy says to him, "I own 6 houses,
  • 00:36:22.110 --> 00:36:27.090
  • and I make $4 million a year, and I have an IQ of 176,"
  • 00:36:27.100 --> 00:36:32.270
  • or something like this.
  • 00:36:32.280 --> 00:36:34.260
  • And so, the original video says millionaire gets kicked off
  • 00:36:34.270 --> 00:36:36.250
  • of a plane, but then Inside Edition did like a sort of
  • 00:36:36.260 --> 00:36:40.280
  • look into this guy's life.
  • 00:36:40.290 --> 00:36:42.270
  • Finds out he doesn't own any properties.
  • 00:36:42.280 --> 00:36:44.190
  • He rents an apartment in Orange or something,
  • 00:36:44.200 --> 00:36:46.280
  • and, no, he doesn't make very much money at all.
  • 00:36:46.290 --> 00:36:49.280
  • He works at a mortgage company or something and can you imagine
  • 00:36:49.290 --> 00:36:53.160
  • what it would feel like to be someone like that,
  • 00:36:53.170 --> 00:36:56.050
  • that loses your temper.
  • 00:36:56.060 --> 00:36:58.030
  • You have no idea there is some passenger filming you
  • 00:36:58.040 --> 00:37:00.150
  • just spewing out lies and then to have millions
  • 00:37:00.160 --> 00:37:02.150
  • of people see this video.
  • 00:37:02.160 --> 00:37:04.250
  • I don't know about you, but it's the--
  • 00:37:04.260 --> 00:37:06.280
  • it's like the worst thing I can think of.
  • 00:37:06.290 --> 00:37:08.200
  • It's humiliating.
  • 00:37:08.210 --> 00:37:10.090
  • It's like one of the worst things to be--
  • 00:37:10.100 --> 00:37:12.010
  • is to be known as a liar.
  • 00:37:12.020 --> 00:37:14.250
  • Who's gonna follow you? Who's gonna trust you?
  • 00:37:14.260 --> 00:37:18.040
  • Who's gonna be your friend? Okay, so Jesus said it.
  • 00:37:18.050 --> 00:37:21.180
  • The truth will set you free, and that is true.
  • 00:37:21.190 --> 00:37:25.260
  • That if we walk in truth, we walk in freedom.
  • 00:37:25.270 --> 00:37:28.140
  • We walk in honesty, we walk in freedom, and we can develop
  • 00:37:28.150 --> 00:37:32.080
  • skills on doing things like saying no and being honest
  • 00:37:32.090 --> 00:37:35.240
  • without being offensive, without being mean.
  • 00:37:35.250 --> 00:37:38.020
  • We can get out of things by simply saying,
  • 00:37:38.030 --> 00:37:39.280
  • "I don't feel like going," you know?
  • 00:37:39.290 --> 00:37:41.190
  • But you can say, "I don't feel like going," in an honest way.
  • 00:37:41.200 --> 00:37:43.250
  • Everybody has been that way before, or whatever it is that
  • 00:37:43.260 --> 00:37:45.260
  • you catch yourself deceiving people.
  • 00:37:45.270 --> 00:37:47.190
  • The truth sets you free and if you wanna have a serene mind,
  • 00:37:47.200 --> 00:37:50.290
  • if you wanna be a great leader, if you wanna have
  • 00:37:51.000 --> 00:37:52.270
  • a great community, it must be built on trust,
  • 00:37:52.280 --> 00:37:55.050
  • and trust is built on living honestly.
  • 00:37:55.060 --> 00:38:00.050
  • If you have your Bibles open up to Matthew chapter 5.
  • 00:38:00.060 --> 00:38:02.210
  • Today, we're gonna read the important part of the Sermon on
  • 00:38:02.220 --> 00:38:05.210
  • the Mount where Jesus talks about the yes being yes
  • 00:38:05.220 --> 00:38:09.160
  • and the no being no.
  • 00:38:09.170 --> 00:38:14.120
  • He says, "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people
  • 00:38:14.130 --> 00:38:16.290
  • long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord
  • 00:38:17.000 --> 00:38:22.060
  • the vows you have made.'"
  • 00:38:22.070 --> 00:38:24.060
  • Okay, so that's Jewish tradition.
  • 00:38:24.070 --> 00:38:26.250
  • That there is these oaths and if you make an oath you do it,
  • 00:38:26.260 --> 00:38:30.240
  • but Jesus says, "No, go a step further."
  • 00:38:30.250 --> 00:38:32.270
  • He says, "But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by
  • 00:38:32.280 --> 00:38:37.230
  • heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth,
  • 00:38:37.240 --> 00:38:41.150
  • for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem,
  • 00:38:41.160 --> 00:38:44.280
  • for it is the city of the Great King.
  • 00:38:44.290 --> 00:38:47.170
  • And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one
  • 00:38:47.180 --> 00:38:51.160
  • hair white or black."
  • 00:38:51.170 --> 00:38:53.170
  • It's the 1st century. They didn't have hair dye.
  • 00:38:53.180 --> 00:38:55.220
  • "All you need to say is simply 'Yes' or 'No';
  • 00:38:55.230 --> 00:38:59.200
  • anything beyond this comes from the evil one."
  • 00:38:59.210 --> 00:39:04.100
  • Now, did you catch that last line?
  • 00:39:04.110 --> 00:39:06.220
  • Anything beyond a yes, anything beyond a no comes
  • 00:39:06.230 --> 00:39:10.210
  • from the evil one.
  • 00:39:10.220 --> 00:39:12.260
  • It comes from Satan.
  • 00:39:12.270 --> 00:39:14.200
  • That for God there is something about deception that is
  • 00:39:14.210 --> 00:39:17.180
  • utterly satanic, and we don't wanna be fooled by it.
  • 00:39:17.190 --> 00:39:21.280
  • It's interesting the way that Jesus is talking here.
  • 00:39:21.290 --> 00:39:24.160
  • First of all, oaths were an important part in Jewish society
  • 00:39:24.170 --> 00:39:28.230
  • about making contracts.
  • 00:39:28.240 --> 00:39:30.250
  • To actually create a written contract was very rare in
  • 00:39:30.260 --> 00:39:33.140
  • the 1st century near east, because, actually, frankly,
  • 00:39:33.150 --> 00:39:36.020
  • it would have been very expensive.
  • 00:39:36.030 --> 00:39:37.190
  • There are some estimates, for example in the books
  • 00:39:37.200 --> 00:39:40.000
  • of the Bible, about how much they cost.
  • 00:39:40.010 --> 00:39:43.010
  • On the low end they say that Paul writing his Epistles, for
  • 00:39:43.020 --> 00:39:46.000
  • example, would have cost $800 to $2.000, as much as the high end
  • 00:39:46.010 --> 00:39:50.220
  • at $40.000 to write one Epistle and that's because of the cost
  • 00:39:50.230 --> 00:39:54.230
  • of ink and paper and secretaries and all these things
  • 00:39:54.240 --> 00:39:57.230
  • that you needed in order to compile things,
  • 00:39:57.240 --> 00:40:00.030
  • which is incredibly expensive, arduous, and difficult.
  • 00:40:00.040 --> 00:40:03.020
  • So, what was typically happening in a business place nobody
  • 00:40:03.030 --> 00:40:06.090
  • wants the overhead of writing expensive contracts.
  • 00:40:06.100 --> 00:40:09.030
  • That in those days you wanted simply to have an oath
  • 00:40:09.040 --> 00:40:12.190
  • and the way that the oath was made, that this was final.
  • 00:40:12.200 --> 00:40:15.250
  • "I will buy ten camels for a hundred shekels,"
  • 00:40:15.260 --> 00:40:18.250
  • is when you shake on it you swear to God somehow.
  • 00:40:18.260 --> 00:40:22.060
  • You swear, you know, by God that you will--
  • 00:40:22.070 --> 00:40:25.020
  • you swear by God that you will do this thing,
  • 00:40:25.030 --> 00:40:27.270
  • and so, for example, when you do that,
  • 00:40:27.280 --> 00:40:30.250
  • God is brought into the transaction,
  • 00:40:30.260 --> 00:40:34.100
  • and then if you break the deal, you know,
  • 00:40:34.110 --> 00:40:36.110
  • you go before the court, and you say,
  • 00:40:36.120 --> 00:40:38.100
  • "Your Honor, he swore by God that he would give me
  • 00:40:38.110 --> 00:40:41.100
  • a hundred shekels for ten camels."
  • 00:40:41.110 --> 00:40:43.280
  • So, invoking God in any agreement made it a verbal
  • 00:40:43.290 --> 00:40:46.180
  • contract, so it's an important part of the legal system
  • 00:40:46.190 --> 00:40:49.080
  • of Jesus's day.
  • 00:40:49.090 --> 00:40:51.090
  • But what's the problem there?
  • 00:40:51.100 --> 00:40:52.280
  • Eventually, people just start swearing all the time
  • 00:40:52.290 --> 00:40:56.180
  • and a lot--I think-- this is my opinion.
  • 00:40:56.190 --> 00:40:58.150
  • I think business people created this thing of--in business
  • 00:40:58.160 --> 00:41:02.010
  • we call it optionality, a way to get out, and that is you would
  • 00:41:02.020 --> 00:41:05.040
  • swear by God's city, Jerusalem, or you would swear
  • 00:41:05.050 --> 00:41:10.060
  • by God's Earth, right?
  • 00:41:10.070 --> 00:41:13.030
  • Or you'd swear on your head, and so by making these oaths,
  • 00:41:13.040 --> 00:41:17.100
  • if you break the contract you now have the option to get out.
  • 00:41:17.110 --> 00:41:21.040
  • When you go before the courthouse you say,
  • 00:41:21.050 --> 00:41:23.000
  • "Yeah, I mean, I swore, but I didn't swear to God.
  • 00:41:23.010 --> 00:41:25.100
  • I swore to Jerusalem.
  • 00:41:25.110 --> 00:41:27.040
  • Jerusalem is not God."
  • 00:41:27.050 --> 00:41:29.000
  • And what happened is this developed a type of optionality,
  • 00:41:29.010 --> 00:41:32.200
  • a type of evasive swearing during the 1st century,
  • 00:41:32.210 --> 00:41:39.020
  • so what Jesus says is, "Just stop making oaths.
  • 00:41:39.030 --> 00:41:41.190
  • Just be an honest person."
  • 00:41:41.200 --> 00:41:43.130
  • And so, what we wanna become is the kinds of people
  • 00:41:43.140 --> 00:41:47.070
  • that we're just known for being honest.
  • 00:41:47.080 --> 00:41:50.270
  • This idea of no oaths, by the way, which is very common in
  • 00:41:50.280 --> 00:41:54.140
  • Quakerism, actually predates Jesus through one
  • 00:41:54.150 --> 00:41:58.010
  • of the three major Jewish sects, the Essenian community.
  • 00:41:58.020 --> 00:42:01.050
  • So, many of us, we're familiar with the Pharisees
  • 00:42:01.060 --> 00:42:03.280
  • and the Sadducees 'cause they appear in the Bible,
  • 00:42:03.290 --> 00:42:06.010
  • but very often we forget that there is this group
  • 00:42:06.020 --> 00:42:08.040
  • called the Essenes.
  • 00:42:08.050 --> 00:42:10.000
  • Here is a picture of Qumran.
  • 00:42:10.010 --> 00:42:11.240
  • Qumran is a city where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, and
  • 00:42:11.250 --> 00:42:15.290
  • this is where many people--many of these Essenian guys lived.
  • 00:42:16.000 --> 00:42:20.210
  • In Jesus's day there were many of them,
  • 00:42:20.220 --> 00:42:22.180
  • probably as many as 4.000, and they made all sorts of rules,
  • 00:42:22.190 --> 00:42:26.130
  • like they made a dedication to poverty.
  • 00:42:26.140 --> 00:42:30.030
  • They would not partake in sacrifices.
  • 00:42:30.040 --> 00:42:32.150
  • Actually, it's interesting because they're one of the first
  • 00:42:32.160 --> 00:42:34.150
  • groups to be anti-slavery, and they had ritual
  • 00:42:34.160 --> 00:42:38.050
  • bathing every morning.
  • 00:42:38.060 --> 00:42:40.060
  • And what was interesting about these people is they actually
  • 00:42:40.070 --> 00:42:42.090
  • lived and worked in the cities and then they would, you know,
  • 00:42:42.100 --> 00:42:44.140
  • kinda come--sometimes come back to these communities, but one of
  • 00:42:44.150 --> 00:42:47.070
  • the most important things they were known about was
  • 00:42:47.080 --> 00:42:50.050
  • that they would not take an oath for anything.
  • 00:42:50.060 --> 00:42:52.120
  • And by the way, everybody knew they didn't need to.
  • 00:42:52.130 --> 00:42:58.050
  • There were 4.000 of these people.
  • 00:42:58.060 --> 00:43:00.040
  • They always dressed similarly because they can only make their
  • 00:43:00.050 --> 00:43:02.160
  • own clothes, and they all kinda look the same like monks,
  • 00:43:02.170 --> 00:43:04.210
  • but everybody knew if an Essenian said something
  • 00:43:04.220 --> 00:43:07.210
  • to you he means it.
  • 00:43:07.220 --> 00:43:09.230
  • He will never break his word.
  • 00:43:09.240 --> 00:43:11.200
  • What if Christians had that kind of a reputation?
  • 00:43:11.210 --> 00:43:15.050
  • What if someone was like, "No, he's a Christian.
  • 00:43:15.060 --> 00:43:18.020
  • He goes to church. He doesn't need to swear.
  • 00:43:18.030 --> 00:43:20.080
  • You can count on him.
  • 00:43:20.090 --> 00:43:21.250
  • If he says he'll be there, he'll be there.
  • 00:43:21.260 --> 00:43:23.150
  • If he says he'll do it, he'll do it.
  • 00:43:23.160 --> 00:43:25.130
  • If he agrees to something, he'll do it.
  • 00:43:25.140 --> 00:43:27.100
  • He is above the fray. He is honest.
  • 00:43:27.110 --> 00:43:29.070
  • He is above reproach"?
  • 00:43:29.080 --> 00:43:31.130
  • And the irony is that this is exactly what Jesus is asking us
  • 00:43:31.140 --> 00:43:35.150
  • to become, so the Essenians were definitely known for this,
  • 00:43:35.160 --> 00:43:39.200
  • and it says--in fact, Josephus says,
  • 00:43:39.210 --> 00:43:41.240
  • "Whatever they say is firmer than an oath."
  • 00:43:41.250 --> 00:43:45.020
  • Isn't that interesting?
  • 00:43:45.030 --> 00:43:46.220
  • So, everybody just kinda knows this.
  • 00:43:46.230 --> 00:43:48.090
  • The Essenians themselves had a saying that said "he who cannot
  • 00:43:48.100 --> 00:43:51.120
  • be believed without swearing is already condemned," so for them
  • 00:43:51.130 --> 00:43:58.020
  • just being honest no matter what, even if it was sometimes
  • 00:43:58.030 --> 00:44:01.180
  • hurtful, even if it meant that they were gonna lose out on
  • 00:44:01.190 --> 00:44:04.180
  • something, even if it meant that they weren't gonna go
  • 00:44:04.190 --> 00:44:07.070
  • as far as the person they're competing with,
  • 00:44:07.080 --> 00:44:09.060
  • they're going to be honest, and they always did it
  • 00:44:09.070 --> 00:44:11.080
  • no matter what.
  • 00:44:11.090 --> 00:44:12.240
  • And it was something they were committed to.
  • 00:44:12.250 --> 00:44:14.150
  • It's something we should be committed to too.
  • 00:44:14.160 --> 00:44:16.050
  • Don't you agree?
  • 00:44:16.060 --> 00:44:17.170
  • Can I get an amen to that?
  • 00:44:17.180 --> 00:44:18.260
  • That for church, for people, that we should be dedicated
  • 00:44:18.270 --> 00:44:21.280
  • to being people of integrity because it's good
  • 00:44:21.290 --> 00:44:24.050
  • for our family.
  • 00:44:24.060 --> 00:44:25.220
  • It's good for our relationships.
  • 00:44:25.230 --> 00:44:27.210
  • It opens up heaven and pours out blessing on our lives
  • 00:44:27.220 --> 00:44:31.130
  • when we sacrificially act honestly in life.
  • 00:44:31.140 --> 00:44:35.060
  • When we lose something, we lose out on something, we fall behind
  • 00:44:35.070 --> 00:44:39.000
  • because we were honest, we said the right thing,
  • 00:44:39.010 --> 00:44:41.060
  • I believe God sees that and rewards people who believe
  • 00:44:41.070 --> 00:44:45.020
  • in honoring God before honoring men,
  • 00:44:45.030 --> 00:44:47.010
  • who believes in doing what pleases God
  • 00:44:47.020 --> 00:44:49.020
  • rather than what pleases society.
  • 00:44:49.030 --> 00:44:51.050
  • That we're just always gonna be honest even if it hurts us
  • 00:44:51.060 --> 00:44:53.280
  • or harms us, amen?
  • 00:44:53.290 --> 00:44:56.280
  • That is how that you open the doors to intimacy with God
  • 00:44:56.290 --> 00:44:59.190
  • and with your neighbor and get freedom in your life.
  • 00:44:59.200 --> 00:45:03.110
  • And by the way, Satan knows that, and that is why Satan not
  • 00:45:03.120 --> 00:45:08.010
  • only tries his best to deceive us, but also to get us to
  • 00:45:08.020 --> 00:45:12.050
  • participate in deception to gain power and influence.
  • 00:45:12.060 --> 00:45:18.200
  • The kingdom of darkness is founded on deception.
  • 00:45:18.210 --> 00:45:22.220
  • You get rid of deception, you get rid
  • 00:45:22.230 --> 00:45:24.290
  • of the kingdom of darkness.
  • 00:45:25.000 --> 00:45:26.260
  • It's that simple.
  • 00:45:26.270 --> 00:45:30.140
  • This brings me to a very dark story, probably the darkest,
  • 00:45:30.150 --> 00:45:33.060
  • most shocking story in the New Testament,
  • 00:45:33.070 --> 00:45:35.260
  • the story of Ananias and Sapphira.
  • 00:45:35.270 --> 00:45:39.170
  • It's a story that bothers Christians because we always
  • 00:45:39.180 --> 00:45:43.090
  • think of God's wrath, God killing people, for example, as
  • 00:45:43.100 --> 00:45:47.020
  • being kind of an Old Testament thing, and so when we see God
  • 00:45:47.030 --> 00:45:49.260
  • strike down these two people and kill them it shakes us in a way
  • 00:45:49.270 --> 00:45:54.020
  • because it messes with our theology and other things.
  • 00:45:54.030 --> 00:45:58.170
  • Raphael painted this painting, the famous "Death of Ananias."
  • 00:45:58.180 --> 00:46:01.180
  • It's something that people think about a lot when they think
  • 00:46:01.190 --> 00:46:05.180
  • about the book of Acts, about God's power.
  • 00:46:05.190 --> 00:46:08.130
  • I remember hearing another preacher, and he talked about
  • 00:46:08.140 --> 00:46:10.200
  • how he would have preachers that would come in and say,
  • 00:46:10.210 --> 00:46:12.280
  • "The days of Ananias and Sapphira are coming,"
  • 00:46:12.290 --> 00:46:18.040
  • trying to strike, you know, fear into the congregation.
  • 00:46:18.050 --> 00:46:21.220
  • And what's interesting, for those of you who don't know
  • 00:46:21.230 --> 00:46:23.240
  • the story of Ananias and Sapphira, in Acts chapter 5
  • 00:46:23.250 --> 00:46:28.090
  • God's Spirit is moving with so much power in the church.
  • 00:46:28.100 --> 00:46:31.250
  • There is miracles happening and people are coming to faith every
  • 00:46:31.260 --> 00:46:35.040
  • day, and everyone is so alive in this that they just
  • 00:46:35.050 --> 00:46:39.030
  • kind of create the Jerusalem church almost like
  • 00:46:39.040 --> 00:46:42.010
  • this commune-type group.
  • 00:46:42.020 --> 00:46:44.260
  • Everybody sells their stuff.
  • 00:46:44.270 --> 00:46:46.230
  • They all sort of pile it together, and anybody
  • 00:46:46.240 --> 00:46:49.100
  • that's in need can pull, almost like
  • 00:46:49.110 --> 00:46:51.170
  • the Essenian community.
  • 00:46:51.180 --> 00:46:53.070
  • They become almost like a monastery or something
  • 00:46:53.080 --> 00:46:55.020
  • and all sorts of people are coming in.
  • 00:46:55.030 --> 00:46:57.180
  • Well, there is this couple, a married couple,
  • 00:46:57.190 --> 00:46:59.210
  • Ananias and Sapphira, who sell all of their property,
  • 00:46:59.220 --> 00:47:03.230
  • and they bring half the money, not all of the money,
  • 00:47:03.240 --> 00:47:07.140
  • to the apostles and secretly hide the other half.
  • 00:47:07.150 --> 00:47:11.140
  • Well, God reveals this to Peter, and he says first to the husband
  • 00:47:11.150 --> 00:47:14.180
  • Ananias, who's there alone, "Is this all the money?"
  • 00:47:14.190 --> 00:47:17.240
  • And he says, "Yes, it's all the money."
  • 00:47:17.250 --> 00:47:19.190
  • And he says, "No, you lied to the Holy Spirit,"
  • 00:47:19.200 --> 00:47:21.130
  • and then, boom, he dies.
  • 00:47:21.140 --> 00:47:23.090
  • And so, it's just like whoa, and so these young men
  • 00:47:23.100 --> 00:47:27.080
  • carry Ananias's body out and bury him.
  • 00:47:27.090 --> 00:47:30.050
  • And then, Sapphira, being a part of the ploy but not knowing that
  • 00:47:30.060 --> 00:47:33.250
  • her husband was dead, then comes in, and Peter says
  • 00:47:33.260 --> 00:47:37.120
  • the same thing to her.
  • 00:47:37.130 --> 00:47:39.040
  • He says, "Is it all the money?"
  • 00:47:39.050 --> 00:47:41.030
  • And she says, "Yep, it's all the money," and boom, she died.
  • 00:47:41.040 --> 00:47:44.050
  • Actually, there's this haunting line where he says, "Woe to you.
  • 00:47:44.060 --> 00:47:47.080
  • Hear the feet of the men who buried your husband.
  • 00:47:47.090 --> 00:47:50.040
  • They're coming for you."
  • 00:47:50.050 --> 00:47:51.150
  • Boom, she dies.
  • 00:47:51.160 --> 00:47:53.030
  • So this is a very, like, dark passage about God's
  • 00:47:53.040 --> 00:47:57.000
  • wrath in the new covenant.
  • 00:47:57.010 --> 00:47:59.050
  • To take a quick detour, it's so important to understand,
  • 00:47:59.060 --> 00:48:02.220
  • first of all, that, although the Bible doesn't say it,
  • 00:48:02.230 --> 00:48:06.150
  • most Bible commentators say Ananias and Sapphira
  • 00:48:06.160 --> 00:48:09.060
  • were not Christians, and this is something we assume.
  • 00:48:09.070 --> 00:48:12.070
  • We assume because they're giving money to the church that they're
  • 00:48:12.080 --> 00:48:14.200
  • Christians, but the Scripture doesn't say they're baptized
  • 00:48:14.210 --> 00:48:17.000
  • or they're Christians or they made a confession of faith
  • 00:48:17.010 --> 00:48:19.120
  • and the reason this is important is that for us
  • 00:48:19.130 --> 00:48:21.120
  • as Christians, even though we sin and we make mistakes,
  • 00:48:21.130 --> 00:48:24.120
  • when God's--so, we're getting into deep theology here.
  • 00:48:24.130 --> 00:48:27.030
  • When God's wrath comes upon us, because of our baptism that
  • 00:48:27.040 --> 00:48:30.210
  • wrath moves to the cross and that's why the cross and
  • 00:48:30.220 --> 00:48:34.020
  • Resurrection is so important and that's how we're saved,
  • 00:48:34.030 --> 00:48:36.110
  • is that all of us have sinned.
  • 00:48:36.120 --> 00:48:38.100
  • All of us have made mistakes.
  • 00:48:38.110 --> 00:48:39.280
  • All of us have done these things so that--
  • 00:48:39.290 --> 00:48:42.030
  • so, this is why there is--
  • 00:48:42.040 --> 00:48:43.290
  • you know, that people are dying a lot more in the Old Testament.
  • 00:48:44.000 --> 00:48:45.250
  • In the new is when God's wrath comes upon a Christian in terms
  • 00:48:45.260 --> 00:48:49.040
  • of, like, death and punishment it goes to the cross,
  • 00:48:49.050 --> 00:48:52.040
  • so Ananias and Sapphira not being Christians when they came
  • 00:48:52.050 --> 00:48:56.030
  • into the church, they didn't have that sort of protection
  • 00:48:56.040 --> 00:48:59.120
  • over them, and I think this is important, because I don't think
  • 00:48:59.130 --> 00:49:02.070
  • God strikes down--I know God doesn't strike down Christians
  • 00:49:02.080 --> 00:49:06.020
  • and that's something that we can rejoice about.
  • 00:49:06.030 --> 00:49:08.130
  • But even more important, it's important to see a lesson.
  • 00:49:08.140 --> 00:49:11.160
  • That there was something about this thing that they were doing.
  • 00:49:11.170 --> 00:49:15.020
  • Now, first of all, it's not greed,
  • 00:49:15.030 --> 00:49:17.090
  • although greed is bad, right?
  • 00:49:17.100 --> 00:49:19.030
  • It wasn't greed.
  • 00:49:19.040 --> 00:49:20.160
  • It was deception.
  • 00:49:20.170 --> 00:49:22.050
  • Peter even says to Ananias,
  • 00:49:22.060 --> 00:49:23.250
  • "You could have kept the money yourself.
  • 00:49:23.260 --> 00:49:25.060
  • It would have been fine if you would have just given us a gift
  • 00:49:25.070 --> 00:49:26.200
  • and been honest.
  • 00:49:26.210 --> 00:49:28.050
  • That would have been great."
  • 00:49:28.060 --> 00:49:29.200
  • But instead he said, "You lied.
  • 00:49:29.210 --> 00:49:31.060
  • You lied, and you lied to who?
  • 00:49:31.070 --> 00:49:32.270
  • To the Holy Spirit."
  • 00:49:32.280 --> 00:49:35.000
  • And so, there is something weird about this and when I read this
  • 00:49:35.010 --> 00:49:37.200
  • passage I believe Ananias and Sapphira saw a big pot of money
  • 00:49:37.210 --> 00:49:42.050
  • and that in their selling of their property it was a ploy
  • 00:49:42.060 --> 00:49:44.260
  • to gain control over all this wealth or--
  • 00:49:44.270 --> 00:49:47.240
  • and over all of this community.
  • 00:49:47.250 --> 00:49:50.060
  • And that there is something about Ananias and Sapphira.
  • 00:49:50.070 --> 00:49:55.000
  • That if God had not protected the church from them,
  • 00:49:55.010 --> 00:49:57.160
  • I think that what they were doing might have destroyed
  • 00:49:57.170 --> 00:49:59.260
  • what was happening in that community.
  • 00:49:59.270 --> 00:50:02.030
  • That there is something about lying, something
  • 00:50:02.040 --> 00:50:04.200
  • about deception that destroys intimacy.
  • 00:50:04.210 --> 00:50:06.230
  • It destroys trust.
  • 00:50:06.240 --> 00:50:08.170
  • It creates confusion and here is what's crazier,
  • 00:50:08.180 --> 00:50:12.130
  • is there are people who come against the church
  • 00:50:12.140 --> 00:50:14.190
  • in the book of Acts, and they kill God's people.
  • 00:50:14.200 --> 00:50:18.290
  • There are people who come against the church
  • 00:50:19.000 --> 00:50:20.250
  • and beat them up.
  • 00:50:20.260 --> 00:50:22.100
  • There are people-- the church itself, you know,
  • 00:50:22.110 --> 00:50:24.090
  • has all sorts of persecution.
  • 00:50:24.100 --> 00:50:26.050
  • Many of them become enslaved and yet this is the time where God
  • 00:50:26.060 --> 00:50:29.270
  • acts with wrath and what I read when I see this is just simply
  • 00:50:29.280 --> 00:50:35.270
  • that God doesn't protect the church from violence,
  • 00:50:35.280 --> 00:50:39.040
  • but he does protect the church from deception.
  • 00:50:39.050 --> 00:50:42.100
  • In other words, whereas violence can harm the bodies of a church,
  • 00:50:42.110 --> 00:50:46.050
  • it's deception that can kill the soul of a church,
  • 00:50:46.060 --> 00:50:48.280
  • and this is why it's so important for God
  • 00:50:48.290 --> 00:50:52.090
  • that he protects every--
  • 00:50:52.100 --> 00:50:54.100
  • his people from deception, from the work of Satan.
  • 00:50:54.110 --> 00:50:57.100
  • And this is why we as God's followers should be committed to
  • 00:50:57.110 --> 00:51:01.110
  • never partaking in deception of any kind, to always be honest,
  • 00:51:01.120 --> 00:51:05.120
  • and when we make mistakes to just fess up and ask for,
  • 00:51:05.130 --> 00:51:09.050
  • you know, grace and mercy, and everybody understands, I think.
  • 00:51:09.060 --> 00:51:12.000
  • It's just so important that we understand that the kingdom of
  • 00:51:12.010 --> 00:51:16.060
  • darkness is founded on deception and that little deceptive things
  • 00:51:16.070 --> 00:51:22.150
  • to gain power in a church or family or anything else
  • 00:51:22.160 --> 00:51:25.240
  • can actually cause incredible harm for generations,
  • 00:51:25.250 --> 00:51:29.230
  • so we don't wanna do it.
  • 00:51:29.240 --> 00:51:32.090
  • So, that's why for us as believers it is so important
  • 00:51:32.100 --> 00:51:35.250
  • that we understand for God--
  • 00:51:35.260 --> 00:51:37.260
  • it's like the first thing God wants is just honest people.
  • 00:51:37.270 --> 00:51:41.020
  • You also see this in the New Testament, you know,
  • 00:51:41.030 --> 00:51:43.050
  • God getting upset at the Pharisees.
  • 00:51:43.060 --> 00:51:45.040
  • Not because they're rigid, but because they're liars,
  • 00:51:45.050 --> 00:51:48.030
  • because they pretend that they're doing all the stuff that
  • 00:51:48.040 --> 00:51:51.170
  • they're telling other people to do when they're not.
  • 00:51:51.180 --> 00:51:54.060
  • There again deception destroying God's people.
  • 00:51:54.070 --> 00:51:57.170
  • All right, let's make this more positive, shall we?
  • 00:51:57.180 --> 00:52:00.260
  • You see, the key is not just to see the danger of deception,
  • 00:52:00.270 --> 00:52:03.090
  • but to see the freedom that comes with being
  • 00:52:03.100 --> 00:52:05.250
  • a person of integrity.
  • 00:52:05.260 --> 00:52:07.220
  • Sometimes being a person of integrity is scary.
  • 00:52:07.230 --> 00:52:11.280
  • Sometimes it means blowing a whistle at your organization.
  • 00:52:11.290 --> 00:52:16.060
  • Sometimes it means confronting people.
  • 00:52:16.070 --> 00:52:18.180
  • Sometimes it means sharing something in your closet that
  • 00:52:18.190 --> 00:52:22.060
  • you don't want someone to know.
  • 00:52:22.070 --> 00:52:24.200
  • Sometimes it means being honest about your emotions and
  • 00:52:24.210 --> 00:52:27.030
  • feelings, and so in almost every case when we've been hiding
  • 00:52:27.040 --> 00:52:31.060
  • something honesty requires courage, but there is such a
  • 00:52:31.070 --> 00:52:35.070
  • reward in that, and the reward is freedom, freedom and life.
  • 00:52:35.080 --> 00:52:38.250
  • And by the way, it's also the best way to lead.
  • 00:52:38.260 --> 00:52:42.060
  • If you wanna be a great leader, if you wanna be a great dad,
  • 00:52:42.070 --> 00:52:44.200
  • if you wanna be a great husband, you wanna be a great mom,
  • 00:52:44.210 --> 00:52:47.020
  • you wanna be a great wife, a great girlfriend,
  • 00:52:47.030 --> 00:52:49.120
  • a great employee, whatever it is,
  • 00:52:49.130 --> 00:52:51.170
  • or employer, whatever it is you're called to do,
  • 00:52:51.180 --> 00:52:53.200
  • you have to be known first as an honest person.
  • 00:52:53.210 --> 00:52:55.250
  • People need to know that your word is true and that they can
  • 00:52:55.260 --> 00:52:58.210
  • trust you and that they know where they're going because
  • 00:52:58.220 --> 00:53:01.020
  • you've told them, and so there is just three things I wanna
  • 00:53:01.030 --> 00:53:04.140
  • say, just three quick tips that I think will make
  • 00:53:04.150 --> 00:53:06.190
  • all the difference in the world.
  • 00:53:06.200 --> 00:53:08.150
  • The first is if you're carrying a house of cards,
  • 00:53:08.160 --> 00:53:11.280
  • which is what a hidden lie always turns into
  • 00:53:11.290 --> 00:53:14.060
  • if it's a big one--
  • 00:53:14.070 --> 00:53:16.090
  • you need more lies to keep it going, right?
  • 00:53:16.100 --> 00:53:17.280
  • So, you put one little lie and then the other, and you make
  • 00:53:17.290 --> 00:53:19.220
  • this little teepee, and then you gotta do another one,
  • 00:53:19.230 --> 00:53:21.160
  • and then you go here, here, and it just becomes this house
  • 00:53:21.170 --> 00:53:23.240
  • of cards that you're hoping no gust of wind comes
  • 00:53:23.250 --> 00:53:26.110
  • or you don't trip over something.
  • 00:53:26.120 --> 00:53:28.180
  • Just come clean.
  • 00:53:28.190 --> 00:53:30.220
  • I can tell you that there's just incredible freedom in coming
  • 00:53:30.230 --> 00:53:33.240
  • clean with whatever it is that you're holding.
  • 00:53:33.250 --> 00:53:37.290
  • And I promise you things will not get easier.
  • 00:53:38.000 --> 00:53:41.050
  • I promise you they'll get harder right away, but this is why
  • 00:53:41.060 --> 00:53:45.090
  • I think of coming clean as spring cleaning.
  • 00:53:45.100 --> 00:53:47.210
  • You ever spring--do spring cleaning in your house?
  • 00:53:47.220 --> 00:53:50.130
  • Any of you do spring cleaning?
  • 00:53:50.140 --> 00:53:52.100
  • Everything is coming out of the drawers.
  • 00:53:52.110 --> 00:53:54.010
  • Everything is coming out from under the bed.
  • 00:53:54.020 --> 00:53:55.230
  • That closet that you can barely close 'cause towels and stuff
  • 00:53:55.240 --> 00:53:59.030
  • are coming out.
  • 00:53:59.040 --> 00:54:00.260
  • I have one of those.
  • 00:54:00.270 --> 00:54:02.220
  • Then you know, it's like you pull everything out and
  • 00:54:02.230 --> 00:54:04.190
  • everything looks messier, but that's what you have to do
  • 00:54:04.200 --> 00:54:07.160
  • in order to get it truly clean.
  • 00:54:07.170 --> 00:54:09.260
  • That's what it's like coming clean with whatever it is
  • 00:54:09.270 --> 00:54:12.140
  • that you're hiding, so think of it as spring cleaning.
  • 00:54:12.150 --> 00:54:15.070
  • I promise in the long run it actually will get easier.
  • 00:54:15.080 --> 00:54:18.030
  • Number two, if you struggle with, you know, little,
  • 00:54:18.040 --> 00:54:22.140
  • petty lies I think we should all make a commitment to just not
  • 00:54:22.150 --> 00:54:25.270
  • do that, to never do that, even if it's--
  • 00:54:25.280 --> 00:54:28.100
  • you think it's not a big deal just don't participate in it
  • 00:54:28.110 --> 00:54:32.010
  • at all to the best you can,
  • 00:54:32.020 --> 00:54:33.270
  • and I wanna employ something that we had
  • 00:54:33.280 --> 00:54:35.260
  • when we were kids called the Five-Second Rule for food.
  • 00:54:35.270 --> 00:54:37.240
  • Remember that?
  • 00:54:37.250 --> 00:54:39.160
  • If you drop candy, if you drop your pizza, if you drop
  • 00:54:39.170 --> 00:54:41.170
  • a banana, you drop an apple.
  • 00:54:41.180 --> 00:54:43.150
  • Actually, agree bananas are out.
  • 00:54:43.160 --> 00:54:45.110
  • You can't do bananas because it's kinda sticky,
  • 00:54:45.120 --> 00:54:47.100
  • and it will grab things, but anything that's not sticky.
  • 00:54:47.110 --> 00:54:50.030
  • You got five seconds so you can pick it up off the ground
  • 00:54:50.040 --> 00:54:52.190
  • and you can eat it.
  • 00:54:52.200 --> 00:54:55.010
  • So, if you catch yourself, you know, saying no to this or yes
  • 00:54:55.020 --> 00:54:58.230
  • to that, and you say, "No, I've got this thing I've gotta go
  • 00:54:58.240 --> 00:55:02.000
  • to," or, "No, I've gotta work tonight,"
  • 00:55:02.010 --> 00:55:04.100
  • you've got five seconds to fix it,
  • 00:55:04.110 --> 00:55:06.190
  • and it's not gonna be a big deal.
  • 00:55:06.200 --> 00:55:07.270
  • Nobody is gonna care.
  • 00:55:07.280 --> 00:55:09.060
  • You just say, "Actually, no. That's a few days.
  • 00:55:09.070 --> 00:55:10.160
  • Actually, I just--I'm feeling really tired.
  • 00:55:10.170 --> 00:55:11.280
  • I'd like a night off. Is it okay?"
  • 00:55:11.290 --> 00:55:13.080
  • And people get it, it's fine.
  • 00:55:13.090 --> 00:55:14.270
  • So, get it? Five-second rule.
  • 00:55:14.280 --> 00:55:16.040
  • If you catch yourself, turn it around.
  • 00:55:16.050 --> 00:55:17.160
  • Don't let it take root in your life.
  • 00:55:17.170 --> 00:55:21.030
  • And then, finally, and this is the last thing.
  • 00:55:21.040 --> 00:55:22.270
  • This is super important for leaders, and this is important
  • 00:55:22.280 --> 00:55:25.250
  • in your job, really, is learning how to practice
  • 00:55:25.260 --> 00:55:28.270
  • what's called the positive no.
  • 00:55:28.280 --> 00:55:31.290
  • Very often, I think, we say yes to things we don't have a yes to
  • 00:55:32.000 --> 00:55:35.280
  • say, or we're not good at saying no, and so we lie to get out
  • 00:55:35.290 --> 00:55:40.080
  • of things at work or whatever.
  • 00:55:40.090 --> 00:55:42.250
  • And this is from William Ury.
  • 00:55:42.260 --> 00:55:45.270
  • He's really--he's the guy that also wrote the book
  • 00:55:45.280 --> 00:55:48.090
  • "Getting to Yes," but it goes like this.
  • 00:55:48.100 --> 00:55:50.190
  • Let's say, for example, your boss says,
  • 00:55:50.200 --> 00:55:52.100
  • "Hey, can you come to work on Friday night?"
  • 00:55:52.110 --> 00:55:55.150
  • You wanna give a yes, then a no, then a yes.
  • 00:55:55.160 --> 00:55:57.270
  • It's like a sandwich.
  • 00:55:57.280 --> 00:55:59.250
  • So, for example, "Hey, Bobby, can you come and work
  • 00:55:59.260 --> 00:56:02.070
  • on Friday night?"
  • 00:56:02.080 --> 00:56:03.270
  • The yes is, "Yes, I'm happy to work extra hours."
  • 00:56:03.280 --> 00:56:07.180
  • Or you're saying,
  • 00:56:07.190 --> 00:56:09.130
  • "Yes, I'm going to my daughter's play tonight."
  • 00:56:09.140 --> 00:56:11.180
  • So, you say, "I'm happy to do some extra work,
  • 00:56:11.190 --> 00:56:15.040
  • but I need to go to my daughter's play tonight."
  • 00:56:15.050 --> 00:56:17.070
  • Then a firm but gracious no, "So, I'm so sorry I can't make
  • 00:56:17.080 --> 00:56:21.010
  • it tonight because I gotta go to this thing."
  • 00:56:21.020 --> 00:56:23.040
  • But then, a yes again, "But yes, let's find another time
  • 00:56:23.050 --> 00:56:25.230
  • I can come in, if that's something you're okay doing."
  • 00:56:25.240 --> 00:56:27.280
  • Does that make sense?
  • 00:56:27.290 --> 00:56:29.240
  • This is a great skill for leaders, by the way.
  • 00:56:29.250 --> 00:56:31.180
  • It's like a yes-no-yes sandwich.
  • 00:56:31.190 --> 00:56:33.170
  • Yes, "So, hey, can--hey, Bobby, can I throw this pie
  • 00:56:33.180 --> 00:56:38.190
  • in your face?"
  • 00:56:38.200 --> 00:56:41.220
  • "Yes, I enjoy pie, and I enjoy having fun.
  • 00:56:41.230 --> 00:56:46.040
  • No, you may not throw this pie in my face, but yes,
  • 00:56:46.050 --> 00:56:50.010
  • Chad Blake is available," for example, stuff like that.
  • 00:56:50.020 --> 00:56:57.160
  • So it's important, you know, that we learn this as a skill.
  • 00:56:57.170 --> 00:56:59.260
  • You don't have to pawn it off on somebody else,
  • 00:56:59.270 --> 00:57:01.200
  • but it's a great thing to get ahold of.
  • 00:57:01.210 --> 00:57:03.250
  • Most important thing is that living an honest life, being
  • 00:57:03.260 --> 00:57:08.150
  • a person of integrity is so much better than getting ahead.
  • 00:57:08.160 --> 00:57:13.220
  • Living an honest life, being a person of integrity is
  • 00:57:13.230 --> 00:57:17.180
  • so much better than shortcuts.
  • 00:57:17.190 --> 00:57:19.260
  • It's so much better than whatever reward sneaking
  • 00:57:19.270 --> 00:57:23.220
  • and all of that stuff you think can give you.
  • 00:57:23.230 --> 00:57:25.250
  • It's--and being honest with the people in your life,
  • 00:57:25.260 --> 00:57:29.220
  • your spouse, your friends, your parents is so much better
  • 00:57:29.230 --> 00:57:35.090
  • than living in hiding.
  • 00:57:35.100 --> 00:57:37.060
  • This is the best way to live life, is to be honest with God,
  • 00:57:37.070 --> 00:57:40.280
  • to be honest with your neighbor, and watch as it
  • 00:57:40.290 --> 00:57:43.100
  • brings you tremendous serenity and freedom.
  • 00:57:43.110 --> 00:57:46.090
  • You can do it. I believe in you.
  • 00:57:46.100 --> 00:57:48.010
  • Be brave. You'll get there.
  • 00:57:48.020 --> 00:57:49.270
  • Lord, we thank you, and we love you, and we trust you,
  • 00:57:49.280 --> 00:57:52.100
  • and we pray in Jesus's name that you'll help us, Lord,
  • 00:57:52.110 --> 00:57:55.240
  • to do this very scary thing, which is to be--
  • 00:57:55.250 --> 00:57:58.120
  • to live honestly and act honestly
  • 00:57:58.130 --> 00:58:00.220
  • and speak honestly in every part of our life.
  • 00:58:00.230 --> 00:58:02.240
  • Lord, we love you.
  • 00:58:02.250 --> 00:58:04.110
  • It's in Jesus's name we pray, amen.
  • 00:58:04.120 --> 00:58:06.160
