  • male announcer: This presentation is brought to you
  • 00:00:02.100 --> 00:00:03.190
  • by the friends of the Amazing Facts ministry.
  • 00:00:03.200 --> 00:00:06.190
  • Doug Batchelor: At four feet tall, the emperor penguin is
  • 00:00:09.050 --> 00:00:11.200
  • the largest penguin species in the world.
  • 00:00:11.210 --> 00:00:14.150
  • Every spring, these majestic birds travel up to 75 miles
  • 00:00:14.160 --> 00:00:18.260
  • inland on the Arctic ice pack, walking and sliding on their
  • 00:00:18.270 --> 00:00:22.130
  • bellies to arrive at one of the most desolate
  • 00:00:22.140 --> 00:00:25.030
  • and remote places on earth.
  • 00:00:25.040 --> 00:00:27.100
  • Once the female lays an egg, her male companion quickly rolls it
  • 00:00:27.110 --> 00:00:31.080
  • onto his feet and covers it with a fold of his fat,
  • 00:00:31.090 --> 00:00:34.070
  • feathery fur to keep it warm.
  • 00:00:34.080 --> 00:00:36.050
  • While the females leave to feed in the ocean for about two
  • 00:00:36.060 --> 00:00:38.260
  • months, the males huddle together in clusters for
  • 00:00:38.270 --> 00:00:41.210
  • protection from the frigid wind, incubating the eggs on their
  • 00:00:41.220 --> 00:00:45.170
  • feet, while enduring the brutally cold, dark winter.
  • 00:00:45.180 --> 00:00:49.060
  • Emperor penguins demonstrate some of the most patient
  • 00:00:49.070 --> 00:00:51.260
  • devotion and warm love for their young of any creatures.
  • 00:00:51.270 --> 00:00:55.180
  • And they do this in the coldest conditions on earth,
  • 00:00:55.190 --> 00:00:59.040
  • where temperatures can drop to 85 below zero.
  • 00:00:59.050 --> 00:01:02.160
  • The Bible says in the last days, because lawlessness will abound,
  • 00:01:02.170 --> 00:01:06.230
  • the love of many will grow cold.
  • 00:01:06.240 --> 00:01:09.040
  • But your love can stay warm even in a cold world.
  • 00:01:09.050 --> 00:01:13.040
  • As a Christian, are you warming those around
  • 00:01:13.050 --> 00:01:15.270
  • you with God's love?
  • 00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:17.210
  • At the heart of all of this is the question,
  • 00:01:17.220 --> 00:01:20.160
  • is your Christianity real?
  • 00:01:20.170 --> 00:01:22.170
  • Join me now, friends, as we look at what the Bible has to say on
  • 00:01:22.180 --> 00:01:25.280
  • this very important topic.
  • 00:01:25.290 --> 00:01:28.000
  • Doug: I heard one time about this mission organization that
  • 00:01:32.020 --> 00:01:35.230
  • was placing missionaries in different parts of the world.
  • 00:01:35.240 --> 00:01:38.010
  • They had a unique way of testing the missionaries.
  • 00:01:38.020 --> 00:01:40.220
  • The candidate was told to arrive at three in the morning for the
  • 00:01:40.230 --> 00:01:44.250
  • exam, three in the morning.
  • 00:01:44.260 --> 00:01:47.170
  • And so, this one candidate, he came at three in the morning,
  • 00:01:47.180 --> 00:01:51.130
  • he went to the room where he was supposed to meet the examiner,
  • 00:01:51.140 --> 00:01:54.210
  • and he waited there until five in the morning, nobody there.
  • 00:01:54.220 --> 00:02:00.070
  • So, he waited a little longer until eight in the morning,
  • 00:02:00.080 --> 00:02:02.140
  • finally the examiner came in at eight in the morning.
  • 00:02:02.150 --> 00:02:05.130
  • He said, "Can you please spell the word 'baker' for me?"
  • 00:02:05.140 --> 00:02:13.050
  • He said, "Baker, B-A-K-E-R."
  • 00:02:13.060 --> 00:02:16.100
  • He said, "Very good."
  • 00:02:16.110 --> 00:02:17.290
  • Said, "Now, can you please tell me how much is two times two?"
  • 00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:24.130
  • He said, "Four."
  • 00:02:24.140 --> 00:02:27.000
  • He said, "Very good."
  • 00:02:27.010 --> 00:02:28.190
  • He said, "I think that the mission board is going to
  • 00:02:28.200 --> 00:02:30.290
  • accept you as a missionary."
  • 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:33.160
  • And he got up and he left.
  • 00:02:33.170 --> 00:02:35.280
  • That afternoon, the examiner went and he met with the mission
  • 00:02:35.290 --> 00:02:38.130
  • board, he said, "You know, that candidate that I had
  • 00:02:38.140 --> 00:02:40.030
  • an appointment with," he said, "I think he's going
  • 00:02:40.040 --> 00:02:41.130
  • to make a good missionary."
  • 00:02:41.140 --> 00:02:43.000
  • Said, "I tested him on self-denial.
  • 00:02:43.010 --> 00:02:46.140
  • He got out of a warm bed on a cold night while I know he was
  • 00:02:46.150 --> 00:02:50.270
  • still tired, and he came.
  • 00:02:50.280 --> 00:02:53.050
  • So, I tested him on patience.
  • 00:02:53.060 --> 00:02:55.170
  • I made him then wait from three in the morning until eight in
  • 00:02:55.180 --> 00:02:58.240
  • the morning before I showed up.
  • 00:02:58.250 --> 00:03:01.120
  • I then tested him on humility.
  • 00:03:01.130 --> 00:03:04.010
  • I asked him questions that any child would understand,
  • 00:03:04.020 --> 00:03:08.180
  • and he was not offended.
  • 00:03:08.190 --> 00:03:10.140
  • Then I asked him a simple equation of addition,
  • 00:03:10.150 --> 00:03:13.280
  • and he answered it correctly and politely."
  • 00:03:13.290 --> 00:03:18.020
  • And he said, "He's got what it takes to be a missionary."
  • 00:03:18.030 --> 00:03:20.260
  • It's going to require self-denial,
  • 00:03:20.270 --> 00:03:23.090
  • perseverance, patience, humility.
  • 00:03:23.100 --> 00:03:27.170
  • And so, they were tests.
  • 00:03:27.180 --> 00:03:29.210
  • Well, there are tests in the Bible.
  • 00:03:29.220 --> 00:03:32.050
  • There--if you're saying, "Doug, how do I know
  • 00:03:32.060 --> 00:03:34.080
  • if my Christianity is real?
  • 00:03:34.090 --> 00:03:35.180
  • I want to know, can I know?"
  • 00:03:35.190 --> 00:03:37.000
  • Good news, there's a test.
  • 00:03:37.010 --> 00:03:40.080
  • The Bible actually gives you several tests.
  • 00:03:40.090 --> 00:03:42.120
  • And so, we're going to ask that very important question today,
  • 00:03:42.130 --> 00:03:45.130
  • is my Christianity real?
  • 00:03:45.140 --> 00:03:48.000
  • And is there a way to know?
  • 00:03:48.010 --> 00:03:50.260
  • Well you know, the Bible tells us that if we are going to do
  • 00:03:50.270 --> 00:03:53.070
  • something about counterfeit Christianity,
  • 00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:56.230
  • or if our Christianity isn't real,
  • 00:03:56.240 --> 00:03:58.160
  • first you've got to identify that, is that right?
  • 00:03:58.170 --> 00:04:01.170
  • And so, there's some preventative
  • 00:04:01.180 --> 00:04:04.130
  • screening that happens.
  • 00:04:04.140 --> 00:04:06.250
  • Now, I don't know if you've been to the doctor for a regular
  • 00:04:06.260 --> 00:04:09.010
  • checkup, but if you go for a checkup, you don't always want
  • 00:04:09.020 --> 00:04:11.250
  • to wait until you're sick and then go to the doctor.
  • 00:04:11.260 --> 00:04:13.290
  • As you get a little older, they say you ought to go do
  • 00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:15.280
  • some preventative health screening.
  • 00:04:15.290 --> 00:04:18.220
  • Something simple like a blood pressure check,
  • 00:04:18.230 --> 00:04:21.230
  • you could prevent death by a simple test like that.
  • 00:04:22.270 --> 00:04:26.210
  • A blood test that could tell you about your blood sugar.
  • 00:04:26.220 --> 00:04:31.050
  • Diabetes can kill a person, you can slip into a coma.
  • 00:04:31.060 --> 00:04:36.050
  • It could tell you about your cholesterol levels,
  • 00:04:36.060 --> 00:04:37.280
  • that could help you prevent a heart attack.
  • 00:04:37.290 --> 00:04:41.000
  • A whole scope of different things can be
  • 00:04:41.010 --> 00:04:43.120
  • determined by that, cancer.
  • 00:04:43.130 --> 00:04:46.060
  • And so, doing some preventative screening can save your life.
  • 00:04:46.070 --> 00:04:51.050
  • How many of you have known somebody and they came down with
  • 00:04:51.060 --> 00:04:54.210
  • some terrible terminal disease, and then somebody will say,
  • 00:04:54.220 --> 00:04:58.020
  • "If they had only had that checked a little sooner,
  • 00:04:58.030 --> 00:05:02.180
  • they could have done something, but they waited too long."
  • 00:05:02.190 --> 00:05:06.120
  • You ever heard that?
  • 00:05:06.130 --> 00:05:07.280
  • They waited until it was too late.
  • 00:05:07.290 --> 00:05:10.130
  • Right now, praise the Lord, if you're alive and hearing my
  • 00:05:10.140 --> 00:05:13.070
  • voice, you probably have not grieved away the Holy Spirit and
  • 00:05:13.080 --> 00:05:16.190
  • it's not too late for you to ask those important and penetrating
  • 00:05:16.200 --> 00:05:20.040
  • questions: is my Christianity real?
  • 00:05:20.050 --> 00:05:24.240
  • Because there will come a time when it'll be too late.
  • 00:05:24.250 --> 00:05:29.170
  • So, now's the time to find out.
  • 00:05:29.180 --> 00:05:31.090
  • How sad it will be on that day to find out that you are
  • 00:05:31.100 --> 00:05:34.010
  • self-deceived, that you figured, well, this was the world's
  • 00:05:34.020 --> 00:05:37.280
  • standard of Christianity and I measured up to the world's
  • 00:05:37.290 --> 00:05:40.080
  • standard, and so I thought I was going to make it.
  • 00:05:40.090 --> 00:05:42.150
  • But to hear the words from Jesus say, "I'm sorry, I don't know
  • 00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:45.240
  • you," I can't think of anything more frightening than that.
  • 00:05:45.250 --> 00:05:49.020
  • And so, if you're going to know, don't you want to know?
  • 00:05:49.030 --> 00:05:52.220
  • And wouldn't you want to know soon enough
  • 00:05:52.230 --> 00:05:55.010
  • to make a difference?
  • 00:05:55.020 --> 00:05:56.110
  • Now, some people get angry when I talk like this.
  • 00:05:56.120 --> 00:05:59.130
  • And they reproach me and they say,
  • 00:05:59.140 --> 00:06:01.150
  • "Pastor Doug, you are so works behavior-oriented.
  • 00:06:01.160 --> 00:06:05.110
  • We are not supposed to be looking at ourselves.
  • 00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:07.170
  • We're just supposed to be looking at Jesus."
  • 00:06:07.180 --> 00:06:11.210
  • And it is true, a Christian principally wants to
  • 00:06:11.220 --> 00:06:13.290
  • fix their eyes on Jesus.
  • 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:15.180
  • But what I'm saying to you is biblical,
  • 00:06:15.190 --> 00:06:18.080
  • and we're a Bible church.
  • 00:06:18.090 --> 00:06:19.180
  • Listen to what Paul says.
  • 00:06:19.190 --> 00:06:20.290
  • 2 Corinthians 13:5, "Examine yourselves as
  • 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:27.000
  • to whether you are in the faith.
  • 00:06:27.010 --> 00:06:29.210
  • Test yourselves."
  • 00:06:29.220 --> 00:06:32.250
  • There is a time for us to scrutinize, to test, to examine.
  • 00:06:32.260 --> 00:06:37.240
  • I'm going to come back to this verse,
  • 00:06:37.250 --> 00:06:39.040
  • but I want to show you it's not the only one 'cause you need at
  • 00:06:39.050 --> 00:06:41.060
  • least two or three witnesses here.
  • 00:06:41.070 --> 00:06:42.220
  • Lamentations 3:40, "Let us search our and examine our ways,
  • 00:06:42.230 --> 00:06:47.080
  • and turn back to the Lord."
  • 00:06:47.090 --> 00:06:49.090
  • It's talking about a search.
  • 00:06:49.100 --> 00:06:50.290
  • In the book of Haggai chapter 1, verse 5,
  • 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.190
  • "Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts,
  • 00:06:53.200 --> 00:06:56.090
  • 'Consider your ways.'"
  • 00:06:56.100 --> 00:06:58.120
  • So, do I have your support that there is a time, the Bible
  • 00:06:58.130 --> 00:07:02.110
  • says that every now and then, we ought to do a little bit of
  • 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:05.150
  • introspection and then figure out if there needs
  • 00:07:05.160 --> 00:07:09.070
  • to be some changes?
  • 00:07:09.080 --> 00:07:10.200
  • Now, you don't want to be driving a car looking in the
  • 00:07:10.210 --> 00:07:15.160
  • rearview mirror all the time.
  • 00:07:15.170 --> 00:07:17.020
  • The rearview mirror is there and it's very important,
  • 00:07:17.030 --> 00:07:20.170
  • but if you spend all your time looking in the rearview
  • 00:07:20.180 --> 00:07:22.150
  • mirror, you're going to have an accident.
  • 00:07:22.160 --> 00:07:23.250
  • You got to be looking where you're going.
  • 00:07:23.260 --> 00:07:25.110
  • So, principally a Christian wants to be
  • 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:27.240
  • forward thinking, amen?
  • 00:07:27.250 --> 00:07:29.110
  • You want to look ahead, you want to keep your eyes on Jesus.
  • 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:32.070
  • You want to keep your eyes on the goal.
  • 00:07:32.080 --> 00:07:34.130
  • But every now and then, you better check your mirrors.
  • 00:07:34.140 --> 00:07:36.230
  • You better take--situational awareness is what they call it.
  • 00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:41.070
  • And make sure that you're where you're supposed to be,
  • 00:07:41.080 --> 00:07:43.260
  • you're not drifting into the wrong lane or someone's not
  • 00:07:43.270 --> 00:07:46.180
  • coming up behind you, going to plow into you.
  • 00:07:46.190 --> 00:07:48.250
  • And so, there needs to be a self test.
  • 00:07:48.260 --> 00:07:51.200
  • The heart needs to be changed.
  • 00:07:51.210 --> 00:07:54.010
  • We need to know that we're converted.
  • 00:07:54.020 --> 00:07:56.110
  • If our hearts are changed, if we are born again,
  • 00:07:56.120 --> 00:07:58.280
  • there'll be a difference.
  • 00:07:58.290 --> 00:08:00.130
  • So, how do you know if you're a real Christian?
  • 00:08:00.140 --> 00:08:03.030
  • Number one, going to start right with the most important, love.
  • 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:08.200
  • Do you love the Lord supremely?
  • 00:08:08.210 --> 00:08:10.110
  • What's the great commandment?
  • 00:08:10.120 --> 00:08:11.220
  • Love the Lord with a little bit of your heart.
  • 00:08:12.210 --> 00:08:15.130
  • What percentage, eighty-five percent?
  • 00:08:15.140 --> 00:08:19.190
  • Isn't that greedy that God would want 100%?
  • 00:08:19.200 --> 00:08:22.190
  • Thou shalt love the Lord with all of your heart,
  • 00:08:22.200 --> 00:08:25.080
  • all of your soul, all of your mind.
  • 00:08:25.090 --> 00:08:27.000
  • And this is a test.
  • 00:08:27.010 --> 00:08:28.290
  • Gospel of John chapter 14, verse 23, Jesus said, "If anyone
  • 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:33.160
  • loves me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and
  • 00:08:33.170 --> 00:08:37.210
  • we will come and make our abode with him.
  • 00:08:37.220 --> 00:08:39.290
  • He that does not love me does not keep my word."
  • 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:42.260
  • So, what's one of the criteria for loving the Lord?
  • 00:08:42.270 --> 00:08:46.220
  • Keeping his word.
  • 00:08:46.230 --> 00:08:48.100
  • 1 John 2:15 and 16, "If anyone loves the world," meaning more
  • 00:08:48.110 --> 00:08:53.120
  • than Jesus, "the love of the Father's not in him.
  • 00:08:53.130 --> 00:08:57.100
  • For all that's in the world, the desires of the flesh and the
  • 00:08:57.110 --> 00:09:00.140
  • desires of the eyes and the pride of life,
  • 00:09:00.150 --> 00:09:02.280
  • it's not from the Father, but it's from the world."
  • 00:09:02.290 --> 00:09:05.280
  • James 4:4, "Do you not know that friendship with the
  • 00:09:05.290 --> 00:09:09.070
  • world is enmity with God?
  • 00:09:09.080 --> 00:09:10.260
  • Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes
  • 00:09:10.270 --> 00:09:13.060
  • himself an enemy of God."
  • 00:09:13.070 --> 00:09:16.110
  • So, we're going to have a struggle going on, and one of
  • 00:09:16.120 --> 00:09:19.040
  • the principle tests is, do we love the Lord?
  • 00:09:19.050 --> 00:09:21.240
  • Now, what if we find, Lord, I don't
  • 00:09:21.250 --> 00:09:23.290
  • love you as much as I should?
  • 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:25.090
  • Or maybe some of you are thinking,
  • 00:09:25.100 --> 00:09:27.260
  • "You know, I love the Lord, but I used to love him more.
  • 00:09:27.270 --> 00:09:30.170
  • When I first became a Christian, I was ready to do anything,
  • 00:09:30.180 --> 00:09:33.240
  • go anywhere Jesus wanted me to go.
  • 00:09:33.250 --> 00:09:35.250
  • I was so grateful when I realized he died
  • 00:09:35.260 --> 00:09:37.110
  • for me on the cross."
  • 00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:39.060
  • Well, there's hope.
  • 00:09:39.070 --> 00:09:40.220
  • Jesus speaking to the church in Ephesus,
  • 00:09:40.230 --> 00:09:42.150
  • he said in Revelation 2:4, "Nevertheless I have something
  • 00:09:42.160 --> 00:09:46.020
  • against you in that you've left your first love."
  • 00:09:46.030 --> 00:09:49.180
  • He didn't say you don't love me anymore.
  • 00:09:49.190 --> 00:09:51.070
  • You just don't love me the way you first did.
  • 00:09:51.080 --> 00:09:54.060
  • A lot of couples might say that too.
  • 00:09:54.070 --> 00:09:56.230
  • Remember therefore, so what's the solution?
  • 00:09:56.240 --> 00:09:59.150
  • "Remember from where you have fallen.
  • 00:09:59.160 --> 00:10:01.150
  • Repent and do the first works, or else I'll come to you
  • 00:10:01.160 --> 00:10:05.120
  • quickly and remove your candlestick from its place."
  • 00:10:05.130 --> 00:10:09.030
  • Now, I want you to notice something,
  • 00:10:09.040 --> 00:10:10.240
  • that in the verse that's really the foundation for this whole
  • 00:10:10.250 --> 00:10:13.060
  • sermon, 2 Corinthians 13:5, he said,
  • 00:10:13.070 --> 00:10:16.210
  • "Examine yourself to see if you're in the
  • 00:10:16.220 --> 00:10:19.120
  • faith, whether you're in the faith."
  • 00:10:19.130 --> 00:10:20.220
  • What does that mean?
  • 00:10:20.230 --> 00:10:22.020
  • There's a possibility that you might think you are and you're
  • 00:10:22.030 --> 00:10:24.210
  • not, so how do you know?
  • 00:10:24.220 --> 00:10:26.240
  • Tests.
  • 00:10:26.250 --> 00:10:28.040
  • Now, there's two words he uses, examine and then he says test.
  • 00:10:28.050 --> 00:10:32.200
  • Doug: Don't go anywhere, friends.
  • 00:10:34.070 --> 00:10:35.160
  • In just a moment, we'll return for the
  • 00:10:35.170 --> 00:10:37.100
  • rest of today's presentation.
  • 00:10:37.110 --> 00:10:40.070
  • Did you know that aviation engineers have studied the
  • 00:10:40.080 --> 00:10:43.150
  • bumblebee and determined with their small wings and their fat,
  • 00:10:43.160 --> 00:10:47.210
  • hairy bodies, it is aerodynamically
  • 00:10:47.220 --> 00:10:50.060
  • impossible for them to fly.
  • 00:10:50.070 --> 00:10:53.170
  • But fortunately, the bumblebees have not read those reports yet,
  • 00:10:53.180 --> 00:10:56.210
  • so they keep on flying.
  • 00:10:56.220 --> 00:10:58.230
  • Sounds ridiculous, I know, yet amazingly many Christians say
  • 00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:03.140
  • the same thing when it comes to obeying God.
  • 00:11:03.150 --> 00:11:06.250
  • They say it's impossible for Christians to really live a holy
  • 00:11:06.260 --> 00:11:10.150
  • life, but are they right?
  • 00:11:10.160 --> 00:11:12.250
  • To help get your answers, Amazing Facts would like to send

  • 00:11:50.160 --> 00:11:52.270
  • Well now, let's get back to the rest of today's presentation and
  • 00:11:52.280 --> 00:11:55.260
  • learn some more amazing facts from the Word of God.
  • 00:11:55.270 --> 00:11:58.270
  • Doug: You ever shop for a car?
  • 00:12:00.160 --> 00:12:02.190
  • I don't know about you, but when that happens,
  • 00:12:02.200 --> 00:12:04.110
  • half the fun of a new car for me is shopping.
  • 00:12:04.120 --> 00:12:06.170
  • Before I even buy it, I have fun doing the research.
  • 00:12:06.180 --> 00:12:09.140
  • Now you can get online, there's all these tools that you can
  • 00:12:09.150 --> 00:12:11.160
  • line up all the different models, there are comparisons.
  • 00:12:11.170 --> 00:12:14.070
  • You can find horsepower, horsepower, gas economy, or
  • 00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:16.250
  • comforts, all the different--I just love doing that stuff.
  • 00:12:16.260 --> 00:12:20.080
  • And then you go and you walk around it.
  • 00:12:20.090 --> 00:12:22.100
  • And as soon as you walk on a car lot,
  • 00:12:22.110 --> 00:12:24.060
  • you know, they're circling.
  • 00:12:24.070 --> 00:12:28.220
  • And you think, "Oh, there's nobody here."
  • 00:12:28.230 --> 00:12:30.200
  • You get out of your car, five people show up.
  • 00:12:30.210 --> 00:12:35.150
  • And they're very nice.
  • 00:12:35.160 --> 00:12:37.070
  • And you start asking them a few questions,
  • 00:12:37.080 --> 00:12:39.190
  • then you walk around, you kick the tires, you
  • 00:12:39.200 --> 00:12:41.160
  • look at the sticker, you have a heart attack, right?
  • 00:12:41.170 --> 00:12:45.240
  • And then if you're really interested, you don't walk in
  • 00:12:45.250 --> 00:12:49.280
  • and say, "Okay, let's sign at the bottom line."
  • 00:12:49.290 --> 00:12:52.170
  • Even the salesman would be shocked if you didn't say,
  • 00:12:52.180 --> 00:12:56.040
  • "Let's take it for a drive."
  • 00:12:56.050 --> 00:12:58.120
  • So, when you're testing yourself,
  • 00:12:58.130 --> 00:13:00.210
  • the Word is talking about really taking a serious,
  • 00:13:00.220 --> 00:13:05.290
  • honest look in and around your heart and your life and find
  • 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:10.280
  • out, am I measuring up?
  • 00:13:10.290 --> 00:13:12.150
  • So, one thing is, do I really love the Lord?
  • 00:13:12.160 --> 00:13:15.040
  • Another test is not only loving God, it's hating evil.
  • 00:13:15.050 --> 00:13:19.090
  • How did you know Job was a man of God?
  • 00:13:19.100 --> 00:13:22.010
  • Says there was a perfect and upright man,
  • 00:13:22.020 --> 00:13:23.210
  • so Job's a good example, right?
  • 00:13:23.220 --> 00:13:25.040
  • Job's going to be in heaven.
  • 00:13:25.050 --> 00:13:27.030
  • Says he loved the Lord, he hated evil.
  • 00:13:27.040 --> 00:13:29.220
  • It's not just loving the right things,
  • 00:13:29.230 --> 00:13:31.020
  • it's hating the wrong things.
  • 00:13:31.030 --> 00:13:33.030
  • And the longer you walk with the Lord,
  • 00:13:33.040 --> 00:13:35.090
  • the more you will hate sin.
  • 00:13:35.100 --> 00:13:38.020
  • You've heard it said before the longer I live,
  • 00:13:38.030 --> 00:13:40.130
  • the more I know I don't know, right?
  • 00:13:40.140 --> 00:13:43.240
  • It's also true the longer you walk with the Lord,
  • 00:13:43.250 --> 00:13:46.060
  • the more sinful sin will appear.
  • 00:13:46.070 --> 00:13:48.270
  • If you're drifting from God, the more you begin to
  • 00:13:48.280 --> 00:13:52.050
  • accommodate and ignore sin.
  • 00:13:52.060 --> 00:13:55.080
  • So, does sin grieve you is one of the tests.
  • 00:13:55.090 --> 00:14:00.090
  • The great commandment, love the Lord,
  • 00:14:00.100 --> 00:14:01.190
  • love your neighbor, love yourself.
  • 00:14:01.200 --> 00:14:03.090
  • Sin is the opposite of that.
  • 00:14:03.100 --> 00:14:04.190
  • Sin hurts God, it hurts others, and it hurts you.
  • 00:14:04.200 --> 00:14:09.080
  • And so, you've got to recognize sin as
  • 00:14:09.090 --> 00:14:11.250
  • an awful thing that it is.
  • 00:14:11.260 --> 00:14:13.180
  • Ezra, you ever read about this?
  • 00:14:13.190 --> 00:14:15.190
  • In Ezra chapter 9, verse 3, when Ezra heard about the terrible
  • 00:14:15.200 --> 00:14:19.160
  • things that some of the people were doing,
  • 00:14:19.170 --> 00:14:21.080
  • he said, "I tore my garment and my robe.
  • 00:14:21.090 --> 00:14:24.120
  • I plucked out some of my hair and sat down astonished."
  • 00:14:24.130 --> 00:14:29.080
  • He was so grieved, and it wasn't even his sin,
  • 00:14:29.090 --> 00:14:31.280
  • it was the sin of the people.
  • 00:14:31.290 --> 00:14:34.030
  • David, when he realized
  • 00:14:34.040 --> 00:14:35.210
  • about his sin, he said, "I have sinned."
  • 00:14:35.220 --> 00:14:37.010
  • It says therefore he pleaded with God.
  • 00:14:37.020 --> 00:14:39.010
  • He fasted, he laid on his face all night for
  • 00:14:39.020 --> 00:14:42.150
  • seven days because of the sin.
  • 00:14:42.160 --> 00:14:46.080
  • Now, we live in a sin-saturated world.
  • 00:14:46.090 --> 00:14:50.090
  • And you can get used to it, and that's dangerous.
  • 00:14:50.100 --> 00:14:55.190
  • Romans 7:13, Paul said, "Sin, that it might appear sin,
  • 00:14:55.200 --> 00:15:01.140
  • was producing death in me through what is good,
  • 00:15:01.150 --> 00:15:04.070
  • so that sin through the commandment
  • 00:15:04.080 --> 00:15:06.050
  • might become exceedingly sinful."
  • 00:15:06.060 --> 00:15:08.260
  • We want to understand the--Paul said,
  • 00:15:08.270 --> 00:15:10.210
  • "You know, before I was converted,
  • 00:15:10.220 --> 00:15:12.110
  • I thought I was a great Pharisee.
  • 00:15:12.120 --> 00:15:13.260
  • And then sin revived and I died.
  • 00:15:13.270 --> 00:15:15.260
  • I saw myself for what I really am."
  • 00:15:15.270 --> 00:15:18.100
  • Sometimes, it's only in the light of the cross
  • 00:15:18.110 --> 00:15:20.010
  • we see how bad sin is.
  • 00:15:20.020 --> 00:15:21.150
  • And so, that, I think, is an accurate test.
  • 00:15:21.160 --> 00:15:24.020
  • Another verse, Isaiah 33:15, "He who walks righteously and speaks
  • 00:15:24.030 --> 00:15:29.120
  • uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions,
  • 00:15:29.130 --> 00:15:32.100
  • who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes,
  • 00:15:32.110 --> 00:15:35.080
  • who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed,
  • 00:15:35.090 --> 00:15:38.030
  • he shuts his eyes from seeing evil."
  • 00:15:38.040 --> 00:15:41.020
  • Sounds like a fanatic, but listen to what Isaiah says,
  • 00:15:41.030 --> 00:15:43.180
  • "He will dwell on high with the Lord."
  • 00:15:43.190 --> 00:15:47.080
  • The person who is offended, plug their
  • 00:15:47.090 --> 00:15:49.120
  • ears, hearing of violence.
  • 00:15:49.130 --> 00:15:51.270
  • They shake their hands when someone tries to bribe them.
  • 00:15:51.280 --> 00:15:54.230
  • They cover their eyes from seeing evil.
  • 00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:57.010
  • You know what that's called?
  • 00:15:57.020 --> 00:15:58.150
  • That's trying to be holy in a wicked world.
  • 00:15:58.160 --> 00:16:01.280
  • You'll have an attitude where you'll understand something
  • 00:16:01.290 --> 00:16:04.200
  • about the sinfulness of sin.
  • 00:16:04.210 --> 00:16:06.090
  • So, as you continue to walk closer with the Lord,
  • 00:16:06.100 --> 00:16:08.260
  • you may spot more and more wrong with your life.
  • 00:16:08.270 --> 00:16:11.050
  • That doesn't mean you're not saved.
  • 00:16:11.060 --> 00:16:13.200
  • Really, it's a test, are you still sensitive about sin?
  • 00:16:13.210 --> 00:16:18.090
  • Or have you gotten where you're just not bothered by it anymore
  • 00:16:18.100 --> 00:16:22.070
  • because too over-exposed, you become numb?
  • 00:16:22.080 --> 00:16:24.240
  • It's like a person who lives by the railroad track and they just
  • 00:16:24.250 --> 00:16:27.120
  • don't hear the train anymore, right?
  • 00:16:27.130 --> 00:16:30.010
  • Or you're in the flight path of an
  • 00:16:30.020 --> 00:16:32.070
  • airport, you don't even notice.
  • 00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:33.170
  • Friends are visiting, the whole house is shaking as a jet comes
  • 00:16:33.180 --> 00:16:35.250
  • in for landing, and you go, "What noise?"
  • 00:16:35.260 --> 00:16:38.280
  • You just don't hear it.
  • 00:16:38.290 --> 00:16:40.080
  • Or a teenager who learns to sleep through the alarm clock.
  • 00:16:40.090 --> 00:16:42.060
  • It wakes up everybody in the house,
  • 00:16:42.070 --> 00:16:45.090
  • but it doesn't wake them up.
  • 00:16:45.100 --> 00:16:47.270
  • It's kind of frightening, that's where you get to the point where
  • 00:16:47.280 --> 00:16:49.240
  • you're grieving away the Holy Spirit when
  • 00:16:49.250 --> 00:16:52.140
  • you're not convicted by sin.
  • 00:16:52.150 --> 00:16:55.170
  • It's a dangerous thing. So, that's one of the tests.
  • 00:16:55.180 --> 00:16:59.040
  • And so, that's test number two.
  • 00:16:59.050 --> 00:17:00.240
  • Number three, do I obey Jesus as Lord?
  • 00:17:00.250 --> 00:17:04.270
  • We often call him our Savior, and some say Lord and Savior.
  • 00:17:04.280 --> 00:17:08.060
  • Well, what is a lord?
  • 00:17:08.070 --> 00:17:10.010
  • A lord is someone who gives commands and you obey no matter
  • 00:17:10.020 --> 00:17:13.200
  • how difficult those commands might be.
  • 00:17:13.210 --> 00:17:16.210
  • Now, this is a Bible test.
  • 00:17:16.220 --> 00:17:19.140
  • 1 John 1:6, "If we say we have fellowship with him and we walk
  • 00:17:19.150 --> 00:17:23.090
  • in darkness, we lie and we do not practice the truth."
  • 00:17:23.100 --> 00:17:27.180
  • John 14:15, he said, "If you love me," you know that,
  • 00:17:27.190 --> 00:17:31.050
  • "keep my commandments," amen?
  • 00:17:31.060 --> 00:17:33.230
  • 1 John 2, verse 3 through 6, "Now by this we know him,
  • 00:17:33.240 --> 00:17:39.010
  • if we keep his commandments, he who says,
  • 00:17:39.020 --> 00:17:41.040
  • 'I know him,' and does not keep his commandments is a liar,
  • 00:17:41.050 --> 00:17:43.130
  • and the truth is not in him.
  • 00:17:43.140 --> 00:17:45.040
  • But whoever keeps his word, truly the
  • 00:17:45.050 --> 00:17:47.090
  • love of God is perfected in him."
  • 00:17:47.100 --> 00:17:49.200
  • Now, what's the reason for keeping it?
  • 00:17:49.210 --> 00:17:51.000
  • A love of God.
  • 00:17:51.010 --> 00:17:52.110
  • By this we know that we are in him.
  • 00:17:52.120 --> 00:17:55.180
  • Notice the wording here.
  • 00:17:55.190 --> 00:17:57.140
  • Paul said, "Let us examine ourselves whether we are in the
  • 00:17:57.150 --> 00:18:00.200
  • faith, whether we are in Christ.
  • 00:18:00.210 --> 00:18:03.170
  • John tells us here's a test.
  • 00:18:03.180 --> 00:18:05.100
  • By this we know if we are in him.
  • 00:18:05.110 --> 00:18:08.030
  • He that says he abides in him ought himself
  • 00:18:08.040 --> 00:18:11.180
  • to walk as he walked.
  • 00:18:11.190 --> 00:18:13.260
  • But what do you get when you do that?
  • 00:18:13.270 --> 00:18:15.270
  • You get everything else.
  • 00:18:15.280 --> 00:18:17.200
  • Being a real Christian means that you obey the Lord.
  • 00:18:17.210 --> 00:18:21.270
  • You're not just a hearer of the Word.
  • 00:18:21.280 --> 00:18:23.130
  • James 1, chapter 1, verse 22, "But be doers of the word,
  • 00:18:23.140 --> 00:18:28.040
  • and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."
  • 00:18:28.050 --> 00:18:30.090
  • That's what I don't want, friends.
  • 00:18:30.100 --> 00:18:32.290
  • I don't want to come and stand before the Lord in that day,
  • 00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:35.030
  • what you think of me doesn't
  • 00:18:35.040 --> 00:18:36.130
  • matter at all, do you know that?
  • 00:18:36.140 --> 00:18:37.230
  • I mean, there's days I care, but in the big
  • 00:18:37.240 --> 00:18:41.020
  • picture, it doesn't matter.
  • 00:18:41.030 --> 00:18:42.220
  • What's really going to matter is what does he think.
  • 00:18:42.230 --> 00:18:47.000
  • Isn't that right?
  • 00:18:47.010 --> 00:18:48.130
  • What you promise me doesn't matter.
  • 00:18:48.140 --> 00:18:50.250
  • What he promises me is what matters.
  • 00:18:50.260 --> 00:18:53.100
  • And if I stand before him and he says,
  • 00:18:53.110 --> 00:18:57.170
  • "I don't know you," because I've deceived myself--James says,
  • 00:18:57.180 --> 00:19:00.210
  • "Here's one of the ways you could deceive yourself is
  • 00:19:00.220 --> 00:19:02.160
  • thinking if I've got the words, I don't need the deeds."
  • 00:19:02.170 --> 00:19:07.070
  • He said, "If you're not a doer of the word and only a hearer,
  • 00:19:07.080 --> 00:19:10.110
  • you're deceiving yourself.
  • 00:19:10.120 --> 00:19:11.210
  • For anyone who is a hearer of the word and not a doer,
  • 00:19:11.220 --> 00:19:14.230
  • he's like a man who observes his face in a mirror;
  • 00:19:14.240 --> 00:19:17.090
  • he observes himself, and he goes away and immediately forgets
  • 00:19:17.100 --> 00:19:20.010
  • what kind of man he is.
  • 00:19:20.020 --> 00:19:21.210
  • But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty," meaning
  • 00:19:21.220 --> 00:19:25.060
  • the commandments, "and continues in it,
  • 00:19:25.070 --> 00:19:28.000
  • not being a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work,
  • 00:19:28.010 --> 00:19:31.270
  • this one will be," cursed?
  • 00:19:31.280 --> 00:19:33.280
  • No, he'll be blessed.
  • 00:19:33.290 --> 00:19:35.220
  • You want to be blessed?
  • 00:19:35.230 --> 00:19:37.020
  • There's also blessings that come with the commandments.
  • 00:19:37.030 --> 00:19:39.180
  • Now, is God asking us to keep 80%?
  • 00:19:39.190 --> 00:19:45.220
  • Do we get a 10% discount and he just wants 90%?
  • 00:19:45.230 --> 00:19:48.130
  • Some churches think 90% is all you need.
  • 00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:51.240
  • Or does the Lord say, Deuteronomy chapter 5,
  • 00:19:51.250 --> 00:19:55.010
  • I think it's verse 29, "Oh, that my people would fear me and
  • 00:19:55.020 --> 00:19:59.180
  • keep all of my commandments always that
  • 00:19:59.190 --> 00:20:02.080
  • it might be well with them," that's a blessing,
  • 00:20:02.090 --> 00:20:04.240
  • "and their children forever."
  • 00:20:04.250 --> 00:20:07.210
  • He's calling us to obey all that we know.
  • 00:20:07.220 --> 00:20:11.120
  • And he promises you'll be blessed.
  • 00:20:11.130 --> 00:20:13.120
  • This is how you separate the genuine from the counterfeit.
  • 00:20:13.130 --> 00:20:16.290
  • Now, I'm not saying that you're not a real Christian if you sin.
  • 00:20:17.000 --> 00:20:21.060
  • Is that clear?
  • 00:20:21.070 --> 00:20:23.020
  • The Bible makes that clear.
  • 00:20:23.030 --> 00:20:24.150
  • You look at 1 John 1:8, the same guy who said you need to be a
  • 00:20:24.160 --> 00:20:27.180
  • doer of the word and obey, he said,
  • 00:20:27.190 --> 00:20:30.170
  • "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves."
  • 00:20:30.180 --> 00:20:33.240
  • Now, he's talking to the church there.
  • 00:20:33.250 --> 00:20:35.230
  • But what's the difference for the true Christian?
  • 00:20:35.240 --> 00:20:38.290
  • What has dominion?
  • 00:20:39.000 --> 00:20:41.100
  • Paul says, "Do not let sin reign."
  • 00:20:41.110 --> 00:20:43.280
  • Reign is on the throne.
  • 00:20:43.290 --> 00:20:45.080
  • Do not let sin have dominion over you.
  • 00:20:45.090 --> 00:20:47.150
  • Sin should not control your life.
  • 00:20:47.160 --> 00:20:49.080
  • There should be no area of your life where the
  • 00:20:49.090 --> 00:20:51.030
  • devil has a regular foothold.
  • 00:20:51.040 --> 00:20:53.240
  • It doesn't mean that we don't fall,
  • 00:20:53.250 --> 00:20:55.110
  • it doesn't mean we don't make mistakes.
  • 00:20:55.120 --> 00:20:58.060
  • You have to apply these tests and you'll understand.
  • 00:20:58.070 --> 00:21:01.030
  • There are fruits of sin.
  • 00:21:01.040 --> 00:21:04.020
  • It's adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
  • 00:21:04.030 --> 00:21:06.160
  • lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred,
  • 00:21:06.170 --> 00:21:09.200
  • contentions, jealousy, outbursts of wrath,
  • 00:21:09.210 --> 00:21:12.230
  • you have an anger problem, selfish ambitions,
  • 00:21:12.240 --> 00:21:15.270
  • dissensions, heresies, evil, murders,
  • 00:21:15.280 --> 00:21:18.040
  • drunkenness, revelry, and the like.
  • 00:21:18.050 --> 00:21:21.070
  • Those are called the fruits of the flesh.
  • 00:21:21.080 --> 00:21:24.080
  • He says, "Let all fornication and uncleanness or covetousness,
  • 00:21:24.090 --> 00:21:27.230
  • let it not even be named once among you,
  • 00:21:27.240 --> 00:21:30.100
  • as fitting for saints."
  • 00:21:30.110 --> 00:21:32.120
  • So, there ought to be a difference in
  • 00:21:32.130 --> 00:21:34.000
  • the life of the saints.
  • 00:21:34.010 --> 00:21:35.100
  • "Whoever says, 'I know him,' and does not keep his
  • 00:21:35.110 --> 00:21:38.050
  • commandments," he says is a liar.
  • 00:21:38.060 --> 00:21:40.230
  • All right, test number four.
  • 00:21:40.240 --> 00:21:42.150
  • Talked about a loving God.
  • 00:21:42.160 --> 00:21:43.250
  • Who else are you supposed to love?
  • 00:21:43.260 --> 00:21:46.080
  • Your neighbor. Do you love your neighbor?
  • 00:21:46.090 --> 00:21:49.230
  • Jesus said that his followers will be known by love.
  • 00:21:49.240 --> 00:21:52.080
  • "By this all people will know that we are his disciples,
  • 00:21:52.090 --> 00:21:54.270
  • by our love for one another."
  • 00:21:54.280 --> 00:21:57.180
  • 1 John 4:20, "If anyone says, 'I love God,' and he hates his
  • 00:21:57.190 --> 00:22:02.130
  • brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother
  • 00:22:02.140 --> 00:22:06.240
  • who he has seen, how can he love God who he has not seen?
  • 00:22:06.250 --> 00:22:10.150
  • And this is the commandment that we have of him.
  • 00:22:10.160 --> 00:22:12.260
  • Whoever loves God must also love his brother."
  • 00:22:12.270 --> 00:22:16.070
  • So, is that clear or is that ambiguous?
  • 00:22:16.080 --> 00:22:19.090
  • Or I should unambiguous?
  • 00:22:19.100 --> 00:22:21.220
  • Again, Jesus said, "Everyone who is angry with his brother
  • 00:22:21.230 --> 00:22:25.040
  • without cause is liable of judgment."
  • 00:22:25.050 --> 00:22:28.100
  • We're supposed to love our brothers.
  • 00:22:28.110 --> 00:22:30.000
  • Matthew chapter 6, verse 14, "If you forgive men their
  • 00:22:30.010 --> 00:22:33.200
  • trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you.
  • 00:22:33.210 --> 00:22:36.180
  • But if you do not forgive men their trespasses,
  • 00:22:36.190 --> 00:22:39.050
  • neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."
  • 00:22:39.060 --> 00:22:43.020
  • So, one of the tests is not only do you just love people,
  • 00:22:43.030 --> 00:22:47.020
  • do you care about the needs of others?
  • 00:22:47.030 --> 00:22:48.280
  • Do you have sympathy and compassion
  • 00:22:48.290 --> 00:22:50.210
  • in your heart for others?
  • 00:22:50.220 --> 00:22:52.130
  • Do the crying need of poverty and the problems in the world
  • 00:22:52.140 --> 00:22:57.140
  • when people don't know the gospel,
  • 00:22:57.150 --> 00:22:59.030
  • do you feel concern for your fellow man?
  • 00:22:59.040 --> 00:23:01.050
  • But have you forgiven people?
  • 00:23:01.060 --> 00:23:04.030
  • You know, Jesus said that this is the benchmark.
  • 00:23:04.040 --> 00:23:06.160
  • He said if you're going to come to my altar and ask for mercy,
  • 00:23:06.170 --> 00:23:09.210
  • but you've got anger in your heart for someone
  • 00:23:09.220 --> 00:23:11.240
  • else, Jesus says what?
  • 00:23:11.250 --> 00:23:13.110
  • "Leave your gift at the altar.
  • 00:23:13.120 --> 00:23:15.210
  • Go be reconciled with your brother, then bring your gift."
  • 00:23:15.220 --> 00:23:19.290
  • The Bible says you should love your neighbor,
  • 00:23:20.000 --> 00:23:21.190
  • and the Bible says you should love your enemy.
  • 00:23:21.200 --> 00:23:23.060
  • I think that it's interesting that he says love your neighbor,
  • 00:23:23.070 --> 00:23:26.130
  • which is your nigh brother, and then he says love your enemy.
  • 00:23:26.140 --> 00:23:28.280
  • And it is possible that's because so often in the Bible,
  • 00:23:28.290 --> 00:23:31.190
  • your nigh brother becomes your enemy.
  • 00:23:31.200 --> 00:23:35.190
  • You notice the biggest problems in the Bible
  • 00:23:35.200 --> 00:23:37.120
  • was with friendly fire.
  • 00:23:37.130 --> 00:23:40.210
  • Joseph's brothers sell him.
  • 00:23:40.220 --> 00:23:42.240
  • David's son hunts him.
  • 00:23:42.250 --> 00:23:44.140
  • David's king tries to kill him.
  • 00:23:44.150 --> 00:23:47.000
  • You often find the disciples are arguing among
  • 00:23:47.010 --> 00:23:49.120
  • themselves which of them is the greatest.
  • 00:23:49.130 --> 00:23:50.220
  • Sometimes, it's those closest.
  • 00:23:50.230 --> 00:23:52.250
  • And there are people who are married for years to people that
  • 00:23:52.260 --> 00:23:56.220
  • they feel like they're enemies.
  • 00:23:56.230 --> 00:23:59.120
  • What could be closer than a spouse?
  • 00:23:59.130 --> 00:24:01.230
  • So, part of salvation is loving and forgiving
  • 00:24:01.240 --> 00:24:04.130
  • those that are close to you.
  • 00:24:04.140 --> 00:24:07.030
  • That would be brothers and sisters in the church.
  • 00:24:07.040 --> 00:24:08.280
  • What's going to do the most for evangelism?
  • 00:24:08.290 --> 00:24:10.220
  • All men will know you are my disciples
  • 00:24:10.230 --> 00:24:13.010
  • by your love for one another.
  • 00:24:13.020 --> 00:24:15.070
  • In the early church, they would marvel,
  • 00:24:15.080 --> 00:24:16.260
  • they'd say, "See how they love each other."
  • 00:24:16.270 --> 00:24:19.190
  • And so, this is one of the criteria.
  • 00:24:19.200 --> 00:24:21.150
  • Do we have that primitive Christian love?
  • 00:24:21.160 --> 00:24:24.040
  • Have we forgiven others?
  • 00:24:24.050 --> 00:24:26.110
  • You know, one of Abraham Lincoln's early political rivals
  • 00:24:26.120 --> 00:24:30.150
  • was a man named Edwin Stanton.
  • 00:24:31.050 --> 00:24:34.030
  • And he was just absolutely vicious in his attacks
  • 00:24:34.040 --> 00:24:39.030
  • of Lincoln for his politics.
  • 00:24:39.040 --> 00:24:41.060
  • He called Lincoln an ape, a gorilla.
  • 00:24:41.070 --> 00:24:44.120
  • He called him terrible things.
  • 00:24:44.130 --> 00:24:46.220
  • Well, when Lincoln became president,
  • 00:24:46.230 --> 00:24:48.080
  • he said, "I want Stanton to be the secretary of war."
  • 00:24:48.090 --> 00:24:49.270
  • And everyone said, "Are you kidding?
  • 00:24:49.280 --> 00:24:51.070
  • He's your worst enemy."
  • 00:24:51.080 --> 00:24:52.170
  • He said, "Yeah, but he's the best man for the job,
  • 00:24:52.180 --> 00:24:54.010
  • and I've forgiven him."
  • 00:24:54.020 --> 00:24:57.090
  • You know who spoke at Lincoln's funeral?
  • 00:24:57.100 --> 00:25:00.080
  • Stanton.
  • 00:25:00.090 --> 00:25:01.220
  • And he said, "Here lies the most perfect ruler of men the world
  • 00:25:01.230 --> 00:25:05.160
  • has ever seen," because Lincoln knew how to forgive.
  • 00:25:05.170 --> 00:25:10.030
  • And he knew that he put into practice the things
  • 00:25:10.040 --> 00:25:13.110
  • that he saw in the Bible.
  • 00:25:13.120 --> 00:25:15.130
  • Another test.
  • 00:25:15.140 --> 00:25:17.070
  • This one you already knew, what are the fruits?
  • 00:25:17.080 --> 00:25:20.150
  • Jesus said you'll know them by the fruit.
  • 00:25:20.160 --> 00:25:21.260
  • What kind of fruit are you bearing in your life?
  • 00:25:21.270 --> 00:25:24.270
  • Galatians 5:22, "Love, joy, peace,
  • 00:25:24.280 --> 00:25:29.140
  • longsuffering, kindness, goodness,
  • 00:25:29.150 --> 00:25:32.010
  • faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."
  • 00:25:32.020 --> 00:25:34.280
  • You're not saved by your works, but your fruit is going to tell
  • 00:25:34.290 --> 00:25:37.140
  • whether or not you are saved.
  • 00:25:37.150 --> 00:25:39.170
  • Do you have the fruits of the Spirit?
  • 00:25:39.180 --> 00:25:40.270
  • If the Holy Spirit is in your life, you're saved.
  • 00:25:40.280 --> 00:25:43.220
  • If you're being led by the Spirit, you're saved.
  • 00:25:43.230 --> 00:25:46.010
  • And what is the fruit of the Holy Spirit ruling in your life?
  • 00:25:46.020 --> 00:25:48.280
  • It's going to be all those good things.
  • 00:25:48.290 --> 00:25:50.220
  • Galatians tells us that, then Matthew chapter 7 said,
  • 00:25:50.230 --> 00:25:53.280
  • "Do men gather figs from thistles?
  • 00:25:53.290 --> 00:25:57.080
  • Even so, every good tree will bear good fruit."
  • 00:25:57.090 --> 00:26:00.190
  • You want to know if you're real or not,
  • 00:26:00.200 --> 00:26:01.290
  • what kind of fruit?
  • 00:26:02.000 --> 00:26:03.090
  • "A bad tree has bad fruit.
  • 00:26:03.100 --> 00:26:05.230
  • A good tree cannot bear bad fruit,
  • 00:26:05.240 --> 00:26:08.030
  • nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
  • 00:26:08.040 --> 00:26:10.140
  • By their fruits you'll know them."
  • 00:26:10.150 --> 00:26:13.010
  • You ever heard the expression if it swims like a duck,
  • 00:26:13.020 --> 00:26:18.040
  • if it waddles like a duck, if it paddles like a duck,
  • 00:26:18.050 --> 00:26:21.160
  • if it flies like a duck, if it quacks
  • 00:26:21.170 --> 00:26:24.040
  • like a duck, what is it?
  • 00:26:24.050 --> 00:26:26.270
  • It's a duck, isn't that right?
  • 00:26:26.280 --> 00:26:29.230
  • And so, you start applying some of these tests and you say,
  • 00:26:29.240 --> 00:26:34.010
  • does he talk like a Christian?
  • 00:26:34.020 --> 00:26:36.150
  • Does he spend like a Christian?
  • 00:26:36.160 --> 00:26:37.270
  • Does he love like a Christian?
  • 00:26:37.280 --> 00:26:39.090
  • Does he or she obey like a Christian?
  • 00:26:39.100 --> 00:26:42.150
  • That's a Christian.
  • 00:26:42.160 --> 00:26:44.260
  • Do you have the fruits?
  • 00:26:44.270 --> 00:26:46.060
  • You know what else, Jesus doesn't just
  • 00:26:46.070 --> 00:26:47.200
  • say you're supposed to have the right fruits, you're
  • 00:26:47.210 --> 00:26:49.000
  • supposed to have lots of them.
  • 00:26:49.010 --> 00:26:51.160
  • Says every branch that abides in me will bear much fruit.
  • 00:26:51.170 --> 00:26:55.160
  • So, you might say, "Well, I got a little love,
  • 00:26:55.170 --> 00:26:57.130
  • and I do make a little donation, and I do--"
  • 00:26:57.140 --> 00:27:00.120
  • I mean, you know, even the people in jail obey
  • 00:27:00.130 --> 00:27:03.090
  • God some of the time, so you're going to find a little
  • 00:27:03.100 --> 00:27:05.160
  • bit of good in everything.
  • 00:27:05.170 --> 00:27:06.270
  • But Christians should have much fruit in their lives, amen?
