  • 00:00:19.280 --> 00:00:24.270
  • Allen Jackson: Our lesson today is about how to live wisely,
  • 00:00:24.280 --> 00:00:28.020
  • and the heart of it is the reality that God is
  • 00:00:28.030 --> 00:00:30.050
  • a delivering god, that he delivers us out of places
  • 00:00:30.060 --> 00:00:33.080
  • and brings us into places.
  • 00:00:33.090 --> 00:00:35.020
  • No matter what circumstances you face today, our God is able
  • 00:00:35.030 --> 00:00:38.130
  • to write a future that is pleasing and will bring good
  • 00:00:38.140 --> 00:00:41.120
  • things into your life.
  • 00:00:41.130 --> 00:00:42.220
  • That is a very important truth to know.
  • 00:00:42.230 --> 00:00:45.100
  • Enjoy the lesson.
  • 00:00:45.110 --> 00:00:46.240
  • Allen: Just as much as you have a physical body,
  • 00:00:46.250 --> 00:00:48.240
  • you're a spirit.
  • 00:00:48.250 --> 00:00:50.280
  • In fact, your physical body is on a count-down clock.
  • 00:00:50.290 --> 00:00:54.250
  • It's not eternal.
  • 00:00:54.260 --> 00:00:56.280
  • If you haven't have enough birthdays yet to recognize that,
  • 00:00:56.290 --> 00:00:59.080
  • just hang on.
  • 00:00:59.090 --> 00:01:01.190
  • But your spirit is eternal.
  • 00:01:01.200 --> 00:01:05.060
  • And the Bible says apart from Jesus, you are spiritually
  • 00:01:05.070 --> 00:01:08.230
  • a slave.
  • 00:01:08.240 --> 00:01:10.170
  • Now here's the cruel part of that.
  • 00:01:10.180 --> 00:01:12.270
  • When your body is finished, your spirit steps into eternity,
  • 00:01:12.280 --> 00:01:16.190
  • and if you are a slave, everything you've done with
  • 00:01:16.200 --> 00:01:19.190
  • your life is fruitless, useless, empty.
  • 00:01:19.200 --> 00:01:25.000
  • Now this is a significant issue, and it's one that the church is
  • 00:01:25.010 --> 00:01:28.050
  • uniquely prepared to address, not to condemn belittle,
  • 00:01:28.060 --> 00:01:32.040
  • or criticize others, to invite them towards freedom.
  • 00:01:32.050 --> 00:01:36.130
  • The message of being a Christ follower is a message
  • 00:01:36.140 --> 00:01:39.200
  • of Liberty.
  • 00:01:39.210 --> 00:01:41.120
  • It is not a diminishing message.
  • 00:01:41.130 --> 00:01:44.080
  • Look at Romans 7 and verse 14.
  • 00:01:44.090 --> 00:01:46.030
  • It says, "We know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh,
  • 00:01:46.040 --> 00:01:49.290
  • sold into bondage to sin."
  • 00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:53.120
  • It's an interesting portrayal.
  • 00:01:53.130 --> 00:01:54.220
  • Its a little blind to us, but the first century slavery
  • 00:01:54.230 --> 00:01:58.130
  • was a widespread part of the Roman Empire.
  • 00:01:58.140 --> 00:02:01.290
  • It wasn't based on race or just your nationality or your
  • 00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:05.070
  • ethnicity, slavery was based on the conquered peoples that
  • 00:02:05.080 --> 00:02:07.290
  • the Empire, that the Roman legions would conquer.
  • 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:11.120
  • In 70 CE when the the Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem,
  • 00:02:11.130 --> 00:02:15.050
  • historians tell us that the slave markets of the Empire
  • 00:02:15.060 --> 00:02:18.140
  • were so filled with Jews that they were almost useless, no
  • 00:02:18.150 --> 00:02:22.140
  • value.
  • 00:02:22.150 --> 00:02:25.020
  • But the way the slaves were sold, they take you
  • 00:02:25.030 --> 00:02:26.230
  • into a public arena, a marketplace or a square,
  • 00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:28.250
  • a soldier would take a spear and drive it into the wall
  • 00:02:28.260 --> 00:02:32.060
  • and stand you beneath the spear, and everybody that saw that
  • 00:02:32.070 --> 00:02:34.210
  • image knew you were being sold as a slave.
  • 00:02:34.220 --> 00:02:38.130
  • Well, that's the picture that the Apostle Paul is using
  • 00:02:38.140 --> 00:02:41.000
  • in that verse we just read in Romans.
  • 00:02:41.010 --> 00:02:42.250
  • He said we were sold into bondage to sin.
  • 00:02:42.260 --> 00:02:47.180
  • We weren't autonomous.
  • 00:02:47.190 --> 00:02:49.230
  • We were sold, slaves, he said something owned us.
  • 00:02:49.240 --> 00:02:55.170
  • And the church has been reluctant to acknowledge
  • 00:02:55.180 --> 00:02:57.190
  • the power of sin or even the existence of sin.
  • 00:02:57.200 --> 00:03:01.090
  • Sin is something of an offensive term these days.
  • 00:03:01.100 --> 00:03:04.240
  • Who has the right to say to me a behavior is wrong?
  • 00:03:04.250 --> 00:03:10.130
  • Well, I would like to catch that a little differently.
  • 00:03:10.140 --> 00:03:13.090
  • The creator of Heaven and Earth has identified bad behaviors
  • 00:03:13.100 --> 00:03:16.220
  • that will destroy you.
  • 00:03:16.230 --> 00:03:19.220
  • That's what sin is.
  • 00:03:19.230 --> 00:03:22.200
  • When the Bible says the consequences of sin is
  • 00:03:22.210 --> 00:03:24.230
  • death, it's not God being punitive, he's told you
  • 00:03:24.240 --> 00:03:28.050
  • the outcome of that behavior at the beginning.
  • 00:03:28.060 --> 00:03:32.210
  • And he's pleads with us, don't do that.
  • 00:03:32.220 --> 00:03:34.140
  • It's like saying if you drink a cup of bleach, it will not be
  • 00:03:34.150 --> 00:03:37.060
  • good for your health.
  • 00:03:37.070 --> 00:03:39.120
  • I'm not punishing you because you drank bleach, that's
  • 00:03:39.130 --> 00:03:42.020
  • the outcome of that behavior, don't do it.
  • 00:03:42.030 --> 00:03:47.030
  • And we have been sold as slaves to sin.
  • 00:03:47.040 --> 00:03:49.280
  • If you will listen to dialogue in the marketplace today,
  • 00:03:49.290 --> 00:03:54.020
  • you'll hear this.
  • 00:03:54.030 --> 00:03:57.040
  • And there's a social debate taking place about what kind
  • 00:03:57.050 --> 00:04:00.030
  • of culture we'll be, whether a biblically-informed worldview
  • 00:04:00.040 --> 00:04:02.240
  • is gonna be in place or we'll have something else that's more
  • 00:04:02.250 --> 00:04:05.200
  • secular, less godly.
  • 00:04:05.210 --> 00:04:08.110
  • And we hear people in the marketplace with their--
  • 00:04:08.120 --> 00:04:11.040
  • you'll hear this dialogue: I feel like I'm trapped.
  • 00:04:11.050 --> 00:04:17.050
  • You don't think I want to be this way, do you?
  • 00:04:18.010 --> 00:04:20.020
  • I am trapped.
  • 00:04:20.030 --> 00:04:23.000
  • And what's a secular response to that?
  • 00:04:23.010 --> 00:04:25.040
  • Well, let's make a law that says what you're trapped
  • 00:04:25.050 --> 00:04:26.230
  • in his legal.
  • 00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:28.230
  • That's not kindness.
  • 00:04:28.240 --> 00:04:33.100
  • That isn't freedom.
  • 00:04:33.110 --> 00:04:35.080
  • We have to have the courage to say there's a pathway
  • 00:04:35.090 --> 00:04:37.200
  • out of that place.
  • 00:04:37.210 --> 00:04:43.200
  • But the latest chapter in social debate, or one of the newer
  • 00:04:43.280 --> 00:04:47.050
  • ones, is that we can't even identify what gender we are.
  • 00:04:47.060 --> 00:04:50.100
  • I've listened to the interviews people say, "Well, you know it's
  • 00:04:50.110 --> 00:04:52.290
  • something--every morning when I get up I have
  • 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:55.210
  • a different feeling."
  • 00:04:55.220 --> 00:04:58.230
  • I'm not making fun of that, that's a tortured place to be.
  • 00:04:58.240 --> 00:05:03.240
  • How could you become, achieve, develop, grow if there was such
  • 00:05:03.250 --> 00:05:08.000
  • confusion that every day you don't even know how you were
  • 00:05:08.010 --> 00:05:12.250
  • oriented to the world you're in?
  • 00:05:12.260 --> 00:05:15.020
  • That is slavery.
  • 00:05:15.030 --> 00:05:18.200
  • It's not a message of condemnation, there's hope.
  • 00:05:18.210 --> 00:05:23.000
  • We have been trapped.
  • 00:05:23.010 --> 00:05:24.290
  • Perhaps not in that debate, but everyone here, if we could
  • 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:28.000
  • be candid enough apart from Christ, we have imagined
  • 00:05:28.010 --> 00:05:30.290
  • there was a way to find fulfillment in life.
  • 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:33.240
  • We chose a pathway that we thought would bring us joy
  • 00:05:33.250 --> 00:05:36.070
  • and contentment and satisfaction.
  • 00:05:36.080 --> 00:05:38.040
  • Maybe it was achievement, a job, maybe it was a relationship
  • 00:05:38.050 --> 00:05:41.120
  • or a marriage or a child or a larger house or different
  • 00:05:41.130 --> 00:05:44.140
  • label and our clothing or another rung on the ladder
  • 00:05:44.150 --> 00:05:48.070
  • of accomplishment or another degree that you earned, and you
  • 00:05:48.080 --> 00:05:51.150
  • pursued those things.
  • 00:05:51.160 --> 00:05:53.220
  • You gave time and energy and effort, and you grabbed
  • 00:05:53.230 --> 00:05:56.110
  • them, you put your hand around that brass ring, and you
  • 00:05:56.120 --> 00:05:58.210
  • pulled on it only to discover I'm still not really content.
  • 00:05:58.220 --> 00:06:04.230
  • I'm not quite fulfilled.
  • 00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:08.190
  • So I've got to run faster or jump higher.
  • 00:06:08.200 --> 00:06:10.170
  • I need another label in my clothes, or maybe I need another
  • 00:06:10.180 --> 00:06:13.140
  • relationship or another spouse or another kind of car
  • 00:06:13.150 --> 00:06:16.060
  • of another house, and then I'll be content.
  • 00:06:16.070 --> 00:06:20.230
  • That is slavery, no fulfillment, no joy, no contentment,
  • 00:06:20.240 --> 00:06:26.090
  • no satisfaction.
  • 00:06:26.100 --> 00:06:27.200
  • The Bible says apart from Jesus, apart from a God perspective,
  • 00:06:27.210 --> 00:06:31.190
  • we are slaves.
  • 00:06:31.200 --> 00:06:34.050
  • And as the church, we don't wanna stand and wag our finger
  • 00:06:34.060 --> 00:06:36.130
  • at the world, we want to say to ourselves
  • 00:06:36.140 --> 00:06:38.060
  • we want to be different.
  • 00:06:38.070 --> 00:06:42.140
  • Look at Galatians 4 and verse 3, it says, "We were in slavery
  • 00:06:42.150 --> 00:06:45.220
  • under the basic principles of the world."
  • 00:06:45.230 --> 00:06:48.010
  • The New Testament describes a world order, a system that
  • 00:06:48.020 --> 00:06:53.220
  • stands in opposition to the purposes of God.
  • 00:06:53.230 --> 00:06:56.280
  • Now, you need one more piece of the puzzle.
  • 00:06:56.290 --> 00:06:58.120
  • Look in John 8 and verse 44.
  • 00:06:58.130 --> 00:07:00.020
  • Jesus is speaking, he said, "You belong to your father,
  • 00:07:00.030 --> 00:07:02.280
  • the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire.
  • 00:07:02.290 --> 00:07:06.100
  • He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding
  • 00:07:06.110 --> 00:07:08.140
  • to the truth, for there is no truth in him.
  • 00:07:08.150 --> 00:07:11.110
  • When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is
  • 00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:14.080
  • a liar and the father of lies."
  • 00:07:14.090 --> 00:07:17.120
  • See, we're not just enslaved in general, we are enslaved--
  • 00:07:17.130 --> 00:07:22.120
  • we are subject to the very personification of evil.
  • 00:07:22.130 --> 00:07:28.040
  • What has mastery over us is something evil, which means it
  • 00:07:28.050 --> 00:07:33.160
  • does not intend good for you.
  • 00:07:33.170 --> 00:07:36.290
  • It may promise you good to modify your behavior
  • 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.130
  • in the moment, but did does not intend good for you.
  • 00:07:40.140 --> 00:07:45.060
  • Evil by definition will take unfair advantage, it will
  • 00:07:45.070 --> 00:07:48.250
  • exploit the most vulnerable place in your life.
  • 00:07:48.260 --> 00:07:53.210
  • That's why the Bible says there's a battle in our minds,
  • 00:07:53.220 --> 00:07:56.190
  • that our minds are a battlefield.
  • 00:07:56.200 --> 00:07:58.080
  • We have to choose godliness, we have to choose a godly
  • 00:07:58.090 --> 00:08:00.280
  • perspective, because evil, the scripture says, is crouching
  • 00:08:00.290 --> 00:08:04.010
  • at your door.
  • 00:08:04.020 --> 00:08:07.060
  • Evil exists, and apart from Jesus, it owns you.
  • 00:08:07.070 --> 00:08:12.020
  • You don't have enough strength of will or force of character
  • 00:08:12.030 --> 00:08:15.120
  • or self determination to overcome evil.
  • 00:08:15.130 --> 00:08:18.280
  • It's more powerful than we are left to ourselves.
  • 00:08:18.290 --> 00:08:21.210
  • We need help.
  • 00:08:21.220 --> 00:08:23.180
  • That is the definition of being enslaved.
  • 00:08:23.190 --> 00:08:27.280
  • Now, there's yet one more step, the outworking of this.
  • 00:08:27.290 --> 00:08:32.210
  • In Romans 8 it says, "There is therefore now no condemnation
  • 00:08:32.220 --> 00:08:36.120
  • to those who are in Christ Jesus.
  • 00:08:36.130 --> 00:08:38.180
  • For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set me
  • 00:08:38.190 --> 00:08:42.000
  • free from the law of sin and death."
  • 00:08:42.010 --> 00:08:47.210
  • The real horror of this is this season of slavery defined
  • 00:08:47.220 --> 00:08:52.000
  • by your life under the sun while your Earth suit holds out is
  • 00:08:52.010 --> 00:08:56.120
  • concluded by death, not just physical death, but spiritually.
  • 00:08:56.130 --> 00:09:02.170
  • You will have eternal separation from good.
  • 00:09:02.180 --> 00:09:08.030
  • Not only does this enslavement keep you from being content
  • 00:09:08.040 --> 00:09:12.020
  • and fulfilled and satisfied, a permanent victim in your
  • 00:09:12.030 --> 00:09:16.100
  • journey under the sun.
  • 00:09:16.110 --> 00:09:17.200
  • When your days are finished, and your body is done, then you
  • 00:09:17.210 --> 00:09:21.250
  • are separated for all eternity from something good.
  • 00:09:21.260 --> 00:09:25.140
  • Now, that is a horrific condition.
  • 00:09:25.150 --> 00:09:28.140
  • Folks, evil exist in the world.
  • 00:09:28.150 --> 00:09:31.280
  • That's an important--the church of Jesus Christ has to be
  • 00:09:31.290 --> 00:09:35.160
  • awakened to that truth.
  • 00:09:35.170 --> 00:09:39.260
  • I read a book sometime ago.
  • 00:09:39.270 --> 00:09:41.240
  • It was written by a psychiatrist, an MD,
  • 00:09:41.250 --> 00:09:45.250
  • and at the time he wrote the book, he was not a believer.
  • 00:09:45.260 --> 00:09:48.270
  • But it was the result of years of clinical practice.
  • 00:09:48.280 --> 00:09:53.050
  • He's a gifted communicator.
  • 00:09:53.060 --> 00:09:55.060
  • But a friend gave me the book, and I'll never forget when I
  • 00:09:55.070 --> 00:09:58.030
  • read it the psychiatrist, secular psychiatrist,
  • 00:09:58.040 --> 00:10:01.270
  • after years of clinical experience with individuals
  • 00:10:01.280 --> 00:10:04.180
  • and families, came to a conclusion that he
  • 00:10:04.190 --> 00:10:06.050
  • delivered in the book.
  • 00:10:06.060 --> 00:10:07.190
  • That clinically speaking, from a medical perspective,
  • 00:10:07.200 --> 00:10:10.210
  • he believed that evil exists on planet Earth.
  • 00:10:10.220 --> 00:10:15.270
  • I'm not makin' fun of that.
  • 00:10:15.280 --> 00:10:18.240
  • Most of us live like we don't believe it exists,
  • 00:10:18.250 --> 00:10:22.210
  • but the statements he made around that intrigued me.
  • 00:10:22.220 --> 00:10:25.110
  • He said evil did not present in his practice in some horrific
  • 00:10:25.120 --> 00:10:29.110
  • condition.
  • 00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:30.210
  • Evil didn't come into his practice with horns and a tail.
  • 00:10:30.220 --> 00:10:34.040
  • Evil didn't present with a sulfurous odor about it.
  • 00:10:34.050 --> 00:10:38.000
  • He said evil presented in the most normal packaging.
  • 00:10:38.010 --> 00:10:43.140
  • It looked like our neighbors, and it sounded like us.
  • 00:10:43.150 --> 00:10:48.230
  • Only when you stopped to investigate and to listen,
  • 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:52.160
  • and he said the only description that was appropriate
  • 00:10:52.170 --> 00:10:56.070
  • clinically was evil.
  • 00:10:56.080 --> 00:10:58.010
  • But this was the line that changed me.
  • 00:10:58.020 --> 00:11:00.120
  • He said he had come to the conclusion that evil
  • 00:11:00.130 --> 00:11:03.040
  • would only yield to a power or an authority greater
  • 00:11:03.050 --> 00:11:06.260
  • than itself.
  • 00:11:06.270 --> 00:11:09.040
  • He said you couldn't negotiate with evil.
  • 00:11:09.050 --> 00:11:11.180
  • You couldn't reason with evil.
  • 00:11:11.190 --> 00:11:14.090
  • You couldn't bargain with evil.
  • 00:11:14.100 --> 00:11:16.030
  • You couldn't out study or educate evil.
  • 00:11:16.040 --> 00:11:19.180
  • He said evil would reach an accommodation when it was
  • 00:11:19.190 --> 00:11:22.210
  • in a vulnerable position, but as soon as it gained
  • 00:11:22.220 --> 00:11:26.120
  • to the ascendancy, it would discard the agreement
  • 00:11:26.130 --> 00:11:29.210
  • to influence in an evil way again.
  • 00:11:29.220 --> 00:11:34.180
  • There is no solution for the evil that confronts
  • 00:11:34.190 --> 00:11:37.290
  • humanity better than the church of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:43.090
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:11:43.100 --> 00:11:48.140
  • And as much as we wanna blame a politician or a political
  • 00:11:48.150 --> 00:11:51.070
  • party or a political movement or someone other than ourselves,
  • 00:11:51.080 --> 00:11:55.060
  • the real truth is at the door of the church lies
  • 00:11:55.070 --> 00:11:59.150
  • the responsibility for the quality of the lives
  • 00:11:59.160 --> 00:12:02.120
  • that we're leading in our communities.
  • 00:12:02.130 --> 00:12:05.090
  • That's not a criticism, that's an invitation.
  • 00:12:05.100 --> 00:12:08.080
  • There is opportunity in that.
  • 00:12:08.090 --> 00:12:11.230
  • Now, if life without Jesus is horrific, let's talk
  • 00:12:11.240 --> 00:12:14.180
  • for a minute about what life with Jesus is about.
  • 00:12:14.190 --> 00:12:17.230
  • Because the reality is Jesus is a great story of intervention.
  • 00:12:17.240 --> 00:12:21.200
  • The reason Jesus wept on the Mount of Olives two
  • 00:12:21.210 --> 00:12:24.230
  • millennia ago was the people in the city that he had come
  • 00:12:24.240 --> 00:12:28.050
  • to speak to did not recognize the opportunity, and he was
  • 00:12:28.060 --> 00:12:31.130
  • weeping for what was coming to them.
  • 00:12:31.140 --> 00:12:34.020
  • They weren't being handed over to some new master, he
  • 00:12:34.030 --> 00:12:36.260
  • understood that what they were enslaved to was going to bring
  • 00:12:36.270 --> 00:12:39.090
  • destruction to them.
  • 00:12:39.100 --> 00:12:41.240
  • But God has intervened on our behalf in the person of Jesus.
  • 00:12:41.250 --> 00:12:46.110
  • In Romans chapter 1 and verse 16, it says, "I'm not ashamed
  • 00:12:46.120 --> 00:12:49.150
  • of the gospel, because it's the power of God
  • 00:12:49.160 --> 00:12:52.110
  • for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew,
  • 00:12:52.120 --> 00:12:56.100
  • and then for the Gentile."
  • 00:12:56.110 --> 00:12:58.100
  • What an amazing sentence.
  • 00:12:58.110 --> 00:12:59.210
  • I like that first phrase.
  • 00:12:59.220 --> 00:13:01.030
  • Paul said, "I'm not ashamed of the power of the Gospel."
  • 00:13:01.040 --> 00:13:05.140
  • Now, we've learned enough about biblical studies to know
  • 00:13:05.150 --> 00:13:08.200
  • that when the Bible says don't be afraid, what's the problem
  • 00:13:08.210 --> 00:13:12.210
  • that the audience it's being addressed?
  • 00:13:12.220 --> 00:13:15.130
  • They're afraid.
  • 00:13:15.140 --> 00:13:16.250
  • So when Paul writes and says, "I'm not ashamed of the Gospel,"
  • 00:13:16.260 --> 00:13:20.120
  • you can be certain that one of the conditions he's
  • 00:13:20.130 --> 00:13:22.140
  • addressing as a group of people that are frequently ashamed
  • 00:13:22.150 --> 00:13:25.290
  • of the gospel.
  • 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:28.020
  • Makes me smile, because two millennia later I have to say
  • 00:13:28.030 --> 00:13:31.200
  • we're not that different.
  • 00:13:31.210 --> 00:13:33.260
  • There is enormous pressure, cultural pressure, messaging
  • 00:13:33.270 --> 00:13:37.140
  • coming at us to be ashamed of the gospel.
  • 00:13:37.150 --> 00:13:42.000
  • The gospel has a technical meaning, it's the good news,
  • 00:13:42.010 --> 00:13:45.060
  • but the good news about Jesus of Nazareth, his redemptive
  • 00:13:45.070 --> 00:13:48.240
  • work, that he died on a cross to exhaust the curse of sin
  • 00:13:48.250 --> 00:13:53.210
  • to set us free from slavery.
  • 00:13:53.220 --> 00:13:57.070
  • male announcer: In the Bible, the Lord clearly teaches us that
  • 00:13:57.080 --> 00:13:59.210

  • changes everything.

  • announcer: We look forward to seeing you here at World

  • Outreach Church.
  • 00:15:07.270 --> 00:15:11.100
  • Allen: We need help.
  • 00:15:11.110 --> 00:15:13.060
  • We all know that, we have all felt trapped, trapped
  • 00:15:13.070 --> 00:15:16.240
  • by a behavior, trapped by our past, trapped by guilt, trapped
  • 00:15:16.250 --> 00:15:20.260
  • by expressions of evil that have touched our lives that we felt
  • 00:15:20.270 --> 00:15:24.040
  • powerless to overcome.
  • 00:15:24.050 --> 00:15:25.180
  • There is a power to help you be an overcomer, it is
  • 00:15:25.190 --> 00:15:29.160
  • in the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • 00:15:29.170 --> 00:15:32.000
  • [congregation applauding]
  • 00:15:32.010 --> 00:15:35.110
  • I'm not denying or diminishing the other expressions of power,
  • 00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:38.140
  • but the greatest power available to human beings is spiritual.
  • 00:15:38.150 --> 00:15:44.150
  • Look in Colossians 1 and verse 13, it says, "He's rescued us
  • 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:49.040
  • from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom
  • 00:15:49.050 --> 00:15:51.140
  • of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption,
  • 00:15:51.150 --> 00:15:54.160
  • the forgiveness of sins."
  • 00:15:54.170 --> 00:15:56.170
  • Rescued us from the dominion of darkness,
  • 00:15:56.180 --> 00:16:00.170
  • that is language of authority.
  • 00:16:00.180 --> 00:16:02.090
  • Apart from Jesus, we are dominated.
  • 00:16:02.100 --> 00:16:05.040
  • One of the characteristics of an unholy, unclean spirit is
  • 00:16:05.050 --> 00:16:09.050
  • it dominates you, manipulates you, intimidates you.
  • 00:16:09.060 --> 00:16:12.290
  • God never does that.
  • 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:15.160
  • We were under the dominion of darkness, but God rescued us,
  • 00:16:15.170 --> 00:16:21.040
  • it says.
  • 00:16:21.050 --> 00:16:22.140
  • It sounds like a SEAL team initiative, but it was more
  • 00:16:22.150 --> 00:16:25.140
  • powerful Navy SEALs, it was the power of God at work on our
  • 00:16:25.150 --> 00:16:30.080
  • behalf to rescue us from the domain of darkness,
  • 00:16:30.090 --> 00:16:33.270
  • to bring us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.
  • 00:16:33.280 --> 00:16:36.180
  • The kingdom we have been welcomed into is a kingdom not
  • 00:16:36.190 --> 00:16:39.220
  • defined or described by domination, it's a kingdom
  • 00:16:39.230 --> 00:16:43.060
  • defined by love.
  • 00:16:43.070 --> 00:16:46.130
  • Now, that doesn't mean it's always cuddly.
  • 00:16:46.140 --> 00:16:49.070
  • The scripture is clear that if God loves you,
  • 00:16:49.080 --> 00:16:51.150
  • he disciplines you.
  • 00:16:51.160 --> 00:16:54.140
  • Parents who don't discipline their children don't love their
  • 00:16:54.150 --> 00:16:56.280
  • children fully.
  • 00:16:56.290 --> 00:17:00.170
  • And God loves us enough to discipline us, so I'm not
  • 00:17:00.180 --> 00:17:03.000
  • talking about something that's just always warm and fuzzy.
  • 00:17:03.010 --> 00:17:05.270
  • When God says no, he means it.
  • 00:17:05.280 --> 00:17:09.020
  • And if you insist on choosing ungodliness, there's
  • 00:17:09.030 --> 00:17:11.160
  • a consequence for that.
  • 00:17:11.170 --> 00:17:13.230
  • And God's grace and God's mercy do not always absolve you
  • 00:17:13.240 --> 00:17:17.030
  • of the consequences of your stubborn refusal to cooperate
  • 00:17:17.040 --> 00:17:20.020
  • with him.
  • 00:17:20.030 --> 00:17:21.130
  • Don't do that.
  • 00:17:21.140 --> 00:17:23.030
  • Don't do that.
  • 00:17:23.060 --> 00:17:25.080
  • But we have been rescued from the dominion of darkness.
  • 00:17:25.090 --> 00:17:29.280
  • We have redemption to be redeemed is to be bought back.
  • 00:17:29.290 --> 00:17:32.090
  • Something has been done for us we couldn't do for ourselves.
  • 00:17:32.100 --> 00:17:34.280
  • Christians, we haven't bootstrapped this.
  • 00:17:34.290 --> 00:17:38.100
  • We haven't been better people than somebody else.
  • 00:17:38.110 --> 00:17:40.230
  • We're not morally superior, ethically exceptional.
  • 00:17:40.240 --> 00:17:45.270
  • We have been delivered.
  • 00:17:45.280 --> 00:17:47.070
  • Something was done for us that we could not do for ourselves.
  • 00:17:47.080 --> 00:17:51.180
  • It's why we tell other people about Jesus.
  • 00:17:51.190 --> 00:17:53.210
  • He'll do it for you too.
  • 00:17:53.220 --> 00:17:57.120
  • The quality of our lives, our families, our homes, the quality
  • 00:17:57.130 --> 00:18:01.280
  • of our experience isn't something beyond us.
  • 00:18:01.290 --> 00:18:04.100
  • There is a power to help us.
  • 00:18:04.110 --> 00:18:07.150
  • Hallelujah.
  • 00:18:07.160 --> 00:18:10.010
  • The church has been deficient on this.
  • 00:18:10.020 --> 00:18:14.070
  • We've been co-opted by other things.
  • 00:18:14.080 --> 00:18:17.270
  • In Ephesians 3 and verse 20, it says, "To him who is able to do
  • 00:18:17.280 --> 00:18:20.220
  • immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his
  • 00:18:20.230 --> 00:18:24.120
  • power that is at work within us."
  • 00:18:24.130 --> 00:18:27.080
  • There's a power at work within you and me
  • 00:18:27.090 --> 00:18:28.180
  • to help us be changed.
  • 00:18:28.190 --> 00:18:30.260
  • The Bible describes it as a new birth.
  • 00:18:30.270 --> 00:18:35.200
  • In John Chapter 3 Jesus said you can't participate in the kingdom
  • 00:18:35.210 --> 00:18:39.200
  • of God unless you are birthed into it.
  • 00:18:39.210 --> 00:18:43.010
  • And the man that was asking the questions was confused.
  • 00:18:43.020 --> 00:18:45.030
  • He said, "How can that be?
  • 00:18:45.040 --> 00:18:46.140
  • I'm an old man, I can't repeat that birthing thing."
  • 00:18:46.150 --> 00:18:50.080
  • And Jesus said not physically.
  • 00:18:50.090 --> 00:18:51.180
  • You have to be spiritually birthed.
  • 00:18:51.190 --> 00:18:54.150
  • In Corinthians it talks about it being--becoming a new creature,
  • 00:18:54.160 --> 00:18:57.170
  • a totally new creation in Christ.
  • 00:18:57.180 --> 00:19:00.230
  • I love that imagery of a new birth.
  • 00:19:00.240 --> 00:19:02.230
  • I grew up in a veterinary clinic, and so I saw lots
  • 00:19:02.240 --> 00:19:05.030
  • of critters being born, puppies and kittens and goats, we saw
  • 00:19:05.040 --> 00:19:09.040
  • it, but my favorite was in the springtime of the year
  • 00:19:09.050 --> 00:19:13.080
  • when they would bring the brood mares to the clinic.
  • 00:19:13.090 --> 00:19:16.190
  • The clients that had expensive mares or they were--
  • 00:19:16.200 --> 00:19:21.180
  • the expensive stud fees, they had a lot invested.
  • 00:19:21.190 --> 00:19:23.280
  • Sometimes they would bring those mares to the clinic,
  • 00:19:23.290 --> 00:19:25.170
  • so the veteran could watch over the delivery, to be sure
  • 00:19:25.180 --> 00:19:28.100
  • that everybody was healthy.
  • 00:19:28.110 --> 00:19:29.210
  • And it's not an exact science, so they'd usually come a few
  • 00:19:29.220 --> 00:19:32.100
  • weeks before delivery and we'd keep them a week or two after.
  • 00:19:32.110 --> 00:19:34.210
  • So, there was a window near where the farm would be
  • 00:19:34.220 --> 00:19:37.160
  • filled with brood mares great with child.
  • 00:19:37.170 --> 00:19:43.000
  • And this was before the digital age, folks.
  • 00:19:43.010 --> 00:19:44.220
  • We didn't have monitors and cameras, pods and pads
  • 00:19:44.230 --> 00:19:49.000
  • and phones and apps.
  • 00:19:49.010 --> 00:19:50.110
  • All we had was kids.
  • 00:19:50.120 --> 00:19:54.150
  • And so the kids were dispatched to the barn routinely to go
  • 00:19:54.160 --> 00:19:57.070
  • check on the mare that was next in line and to bring back
  • 00:19:57.080 --> 00:20:01.020
  • a report if somethin' was goin' on, then we'd have to bring
  • 00:20:01.030 --> 00:20:03.070
  • the man 'cause we weren't the man.
  • 00:20:03.080 --> 00:20:06.130
  • He just put the food on the table.
  • 00:20:06.140 --> 00:20:10.000
  • But I love that time of year 'cause we were watching these
  • 00:20:10.010 --> 00:20:12.040
  • mares, and we'd watch them approach that delivery, and when
  • 00:20:12.050 --> 00:20:15.180
  • a foal is born, it was always amazing to me.
  • 00:20:15.190 --> 00:20:18.230
  • There's something marvelous in that birthing process.
  • 00:20:18.240 --> 00:20:23.210
  • When a foal is born, they have more legs than they need.
  • 00:20:23.220 --> 00:20:28.270
  • From the knee to the ankle, they're about the same length as
  • 00:20:28.280 --> 00:20:31.080
  • they'll be when they're fully grown, so when their brand-new,
  • 00:20:31.090 --> 00:20:33.280
  • they got these enormous legs, and they have an instinct that
  • 00:20:33.290 --> 00:20:38.010
  • just about as soon as they're born, they have an instinct
  • 00:20:38.020 --> 00:20:40.240
  • to stand up, 'cause they can't nurse unless they can stand up.
  • 00:20:40.250 --> 00:20:43.080
  • So to survive, they gotta stand up.
  • 00:20:43.090 --> 00:20:45.260
  • So they start trying to stand, and they got all this extra leg.
  • 00:20:45.270 --> 00:20:49.180
  • And it's high drama to watch them try to get up
  • 00:20:49.190 --> 00:20:51.070
  • the first time.
  • 00:20:51.080 --> 00:20:53.110
  • They finally get all their legs splayed out, and they kind
  • 00:20:53.120 --> 00:20:55.170
  • of realize if they push off the back, they can get up,
  • 00:20:55.180 --> 00:20:57.240
  • and they're leaning on those front legs,
  • 00:20:57.250 --> 00:20:59.040
  • but they're too spraddled, but they made it.
  • 00:20:59.050 --> 00:21:02.090
  • And they're standing there wobbling.
  • 00:21:02.100 --> 00:21:04.140
  • I always say like a drunken sailor.
  • 00:21:04.150 --> 00:21:07.000
  • And I said that last night, I said I can't really think I've
  • 00:21:07.010 --> 00:21:08.160
  • ever seen a drunken sailor.
  • 00:21:08.170 --> 00:21:11.090
  • If you're a sailor, I apologize.
  • 00:21:11.100 --> 00:21:15.010
  • Maybe sailors just walk like newborn foals, I don't
  • 00:21:15.020 --> 00:21:17.180
  • know, but they wobble, and then they get the courage to try
  • 00:21:17.190 --> 00:21:23.080
  • to take a step and they pick up a foot, but because they're
  • 00:21:23.090 --> 00:21:25.080
  • too spread out when they pick up that first foot,
  • 00:21:25.090 --> 00:21:26.250
  • they collapse again.
  • 00:21:26.260 --> 00:21:28.240
  • And I'm laughing, 'cause it's not me, but in a few minutes
  • 00:21:28.250 --> 00:21:34.070
  • they'll master that.
  • 00:21:34.080 --> 00:21:35.180
  • They'll get to where they can stand and then begin to walk
  • 00:21:35.190 --> 00:21:37.290
  • and nurse, and in a few days they'll be running full speed
  • 00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:41.080
  • across the pasture.
  • 00:21:41.090 --> 00:21:43.130
  • Now, they got more leg than they know what to do with, and their
  • 00:21:43.140 --> 00:21:45.200
  • muscle controls not--their brakes don't work hardly at all.
  • 00:21:45.210 --> 00:21:49.130
  • And you watch, they'll run into fences and trees
  • 00:21:49.140 --> 00:21:51.240
  • and other horses.
  • 00:21:51.250 --> 00:21:54.110
  • Not stupid, they just haven't got control
  • 00:21:54.120 --> 00:21:55.240
  • of all equipment yet.
  • 00:21:55.250 --> 00:21:58.200
  • When the Bible says that we are birthed into a kingdom, there's
  • 00:21:58.210 --> 00:22:03.150
  • something remarkable about that, miraculous about that, dramatic.
  • 00:22:03.160 --> 00:22:06.180
  • It's not that we joined a church or a movement or we got a new
  • 00:22:06.190 --> 00:22:09.080
  • idea or we cleaned up our vocabulary or our beverage list
  • 00:22:09.090 --> 00:22:13.060
  • or our wardrobe, we are something new.
  • 00:22:13.070 --> 00:22:16.020
  • Now, it's a beginning.
  • 00:22:16.030 --> 00:22:17.130
  • It's not finished.
  • 00:22:17.140 --> 00:22:18.240
  • And one of the great fallacies and how we've understood our
  • 00:22:18.250 --> 00:22:21.050
  • faith is we thought we could recite a little prayer and live
  • 00:22:21.060 --> 00:22:23.110
  • our lives on our terms and be the same.
  • 00:22:23.120 --> 00:22:25.100
  • It's not about being the same, we're a people in process.
  • 00:22:25.110 --> 00:22:29.100
  • There is a power at work within us to help us be
  • 00:22:29.110 --> 00:22:32.150
  • different, and God in his grace and his mercy lets that be
  • 00:22:32.160 --> 00:22:37.010
  • an incremental process.
  • 00:22:37.020 --> 00:22:38.120
  • And the same way we grow up physically, we grow
  • 00:22:38.130 --> 00:22:40.050
  • up spiritually, but it's time for us to grow up a bit.
  • 00:22:40.060 --> 00:22:46.060
  • There's a power at work within us.
  • 00:22:47.230 --> 00:22:50.040
  • Which gets me to the response of baptism and why we talk
  • 00:22:50.050 --> 00:22:53.200
  • about it and why we process it.
  • 00:22:53.210 --> 00:22:56.110
  • In 1 Peter Chapter 3 I gave you a kind of a lengthy passage.
  • 00:22:56.120 --> 00:22:59.000
  • I'll give you the highlights.
  • 00:22:59.010 --> 00:23:01.200
  • Peter is comparing water baptism with Noah, and he said just as
  • 00:23:01.210 --> 00:23:05.230
  • God delivered Noah and his family with a boat
  • 00:23:05.240 --> 00:23:11.240
  • through the water, so in baptism,
  • 00:23:12.090 --> 00:23:15.160
  • God delivers you and me.
  • 00:23:15.170 --> 00:23:18.040
  • Peter is drawing a parallel between the waters in the flood
  • 00:23:18.050 --> 00:23:21.040
  • and the waters of baptism.
  • 00:23:21.050 --> 00:23:23.020
  • In your notes in verse 21, he said, "This water symbolizes
  • 00:23:23.030 --> 00:23:25.200
  • baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt
  • 00:23:25.210 --> 00:23:29.250
  • from the body but the pledge of a good conscience
  • 00:23:29.260 --> 00:23:32.170
  • towards God."
  • 00:23:32.180 --> 00:23:33.270
  • In baptism God does something for you.
  • 00:23:33.280 --> 00:23:36.150
  • It isn't in baptism we're just doing something for God.
  • 00:23:36.160 --> 00:23:39.230
  • I'm supposed to get in the pool next week, 'cause people got--
  • 00:23:39.240 --> 00:23:41.290
  • good people do that, you know?
  • 00:23:42.000 --> 00:23:44.200
  • And apparently I've been bad people, so this is my turn.
  • 00:23:44.210 --> 00:23:46.290
  • I'm going to get in the line, good people.
  • 00:23:47.000 --> 00:23:48.090
  • See me?
  • 00:23:48.100 --> 00:23:49.200
  • I'm good people, I'm in the line.
  • 00:23:49.210 --> 00:23:51.000
  • Somebody take a picture.
  • 00:23:51.010 --> 00:23:54.220
  • And we appropriately have about that much enthusiasm
  • 00:23:54.230 --> 00:23:57.070
  • for it because we've missed the invitation.
  • 00:23:57.080 --> 00:24:01.210
  • The Noah story is not a story of Noah's planning skills
  • 00:24:01.220 --> 00:24:06.010
  • and navigational excellence.
  • 00:24:06.020 --> 00:24:08.210
  • The Noah story is a story of deliverance.
  • 00:24:08.220 --> 00:24:11.260
  • That about apart from God's involvement and God's
  • 00:24:11.270 --> 00:24:14.130
  • intervention and God's direction, Noah and his family
  • 00:24:14.140 --> 00:24:17.220
  • would have been destroyed.
  • 00:24:17.230 --> 00:24:20.020
  • But God made provision if Noah would cooperate.
  • 00:24:20.030 --> 00:24:23.290
  • And he did and was delivered.
  • 00:24:24.000 --> 00:24:25.200
  • God has made provision for you and for me, not condemning us,
  • 00:24:25.210 --> 00:24:28.200
  • not criticizing us, he has given us an invitation that we might
  • 00:24:28.210 --> 00:24:32.090
  • walk through deliverance.
  • 00:24:32.100 --> 00:24:35.090
  • Don't miss it.
  • 00:24:35.100 --> 00:24:37.050
  • Don't miss it.
  • 00:24:37.080 --> 00:24:39.270
  • Allen: Our God is a god who delivers.
  • 00:24:39.280 --> 00:24:41.140
  • It's a central theme of Scripture.
  • 00:24:41.150 --> 00:24:43.130
  • It's true right through the Old Testament, it's at the heart
  • 00:24:43.140 --> 00:24:45.280
  • of the New Testament with the redemptive story
  • 00:24:45.290 --> 00:24:47.230
  • of Jesus, and God is still actively delivering people today
  • 00:24:47.240 --> 00:24:51.260
  • in the Earth.
  • 00:24:51.270 --> 00:24:53.070
  • No matter what circumstance you face, no matter what challenges
  • 00:24:53.080 --> 00:24:55.210
  • before you, our God is able and faithful.
  • 00:24:55.220 --> 00:24:58.290
  • You can trust him.
  • 00:24:59.000 --> 00:25:00.130
  • Deliverance carries with it two components, it's God's provision
  • 00:25:00.140 --> 00:25:03.170
  • for our lives and his power to deliver us out of someplace.
  • 00:25:03.180 --> 00:25:07.290
  • So if you need help out of a place, God is able,
  • 00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:10.150
  • but he'll bring the provision you need for whatever is next.
  • 00:25:10.160 --> 00:25:13.130
  • You can trust him.
  • 00:25:13.140 --> 00:25:15.010
  • It's a wonderful promise.
  • 00:25:15.020 --> 00:25:16.200
  • I want to pray with you today.
  • 00:25:16.210 --> 00:25:18.060
  • A part of trusting his deliverance is overcoming fear,
  • 00:25:18.070 --> 00:25:20.260
  • so let's lay down that fear today before we go.
  • 00:25:20.270 --> 00:25:23.210
  • Father, we come in Jesus' name to renounce the spirit of fear.
  • 00:25:23.220 --> 00:25:27.190
  • It has no place in us and no power over us through the blood
  • 00:25:27.200 --> 00:25:30.160
  • of Jesus I thank you that you have given us a strong mind
  • 00:25:30.170 --> 00:25:33.210
  • and the courage to face tomorrow, that you're a God who
  • 00:25:33.220 --> 00:25:36.100
  • delivers and restores and renews.
  • 00:25:36.110 --> 00:25:38.230
  • We trust you for that provision in our lives this day,
  • 00:25:38.240 --> 00:25:41.260
  • in Jesus' name, amen.
  • 00:25:41.270 --> 00:25:44.240
  • announcer: In the Bible, the Lord clearly teaches us that
  • 00:25:44.250 --> 00:25:47.080
  • spiritual forces influence our lives, and awareness of them
  • 00:25:47.090 --> 00:25:50.290
  • changes everything.
  • 00:25:51.000 --> 00:25:52.200
  • In Pastor Allen's three-part DVD series, "Living Spiritually
  • 00:25:52.210 --> 00:25:56.020
  • Aware," he invites you towards a heightened awareness
  • 00:25:56.030 --> 00:25:58.220
  • of spiritual things and how to stand in the authority that
  • 00:25:58.230 --> 00:26:01.270
  • is ours through the shed blood of Jesus.
  • 00:26:01.280 --> 00:26:04.160
